Caterpillar developed its high-efficiency G3500 C and E Series generator sets specifically for the growing distributed generation market. In distributed generation, electric utilities or power users install small generator sets near the point where the power is used. Distributed generation (locally produced power) can help utilities delay large investments in new centralized power plants and transmission lines. In addition, the concept can help utility customers take more control of their electricity supply and how much they pay for it. To be financially feasible, power units for distributed generation must be cost-effective to install and extremely efficient to operate. To meet strict air-quality regulations, they also must have low emissions. Cat G3500 C and E generator sets meet all these criteria. They have become the power units of choice for a wide range of distributed power applications worldwide. (Estimated time of completion - 1 hour)

Customers' needs for on-site electric power can be met through a number of different product alternatives. Quite often a customer's product request or specification, which can be based on a preconceived idea or outside influence, may not be the only or best way to meet his or her needs. It is important that the sales professional understands the merits of alternative solutions and develops proposals, which can both satisfy the customer's needs and are practical for the dealer. The latter point is important because at times the sales professional's offering may be limited or require deviations from the spec/customer's request due to the availability of price list options, cost effectiveness and/or inventory constraints.
