Maria Cota Denogean passed away on July 11, 2014 at the age of 90, surrounded by her loving family. She was born July 22, 1923 in Tombstone to parents Francisco and Teresa Cota. At a very young age she moved to Superior and on Jan. 7, 1942 married Federico (Fili) Denogean. Maria was preceded in death by her husband Federico aka Superman; grandsons, Tommy Jon Denogean, Coty Miguel Denogean and Daniel Luis Anzures; her sister, Artemisa Abril; and brothers, Manuel Cota, Juan Cota, Tom Cota and Henry Cota; and son-in-law, Billy Preciado. She is survived by her children, Angie Denogean, Freddie Denogean (Minnie), Miguel Denogean (Cathi), Norma Campillo (Eddie), Margie Real

Maria Cota Denogean(Bobby), David Denogean (Martha), Chella Preciado and Roberto Ramon Denogean. Maria was blessed with 27 grandchildren, 71 great-grandchildren and 24 great-great-grandchildren. Throughout the years Maria opened her home, heart and life to many people. She was well known as “Nana Mary” to all. Her generosity and loving nature was passed on to her family along with many traditions and recipes. Maria was most proud of her tamales and her yeast bread with meat stuffing. Maria spent her final 10 years living with and in the care of her son, Miguel and daughter-in-law Cathi. Their dedication to her is just one example of the legacy of Maria’s selfless love for her family. Maria was a member of the St. Francis of Assisi Parish and a Cursillista. She will live in our hearts forever.

Lucy L. Lopez passed away peacefully in Mesa, AZ, on April 21, 2014. She was a longtime resident, born and raised in Superior. Lucy loved to play Bingo. She made sure went on a weekly basis, whether it was at the VFW or to a Casino. She also loved to dance, play cards, and was a great cook. She is preceded in death by her three boys, Ruben (Titi), Raul (Lou-Louie) and Richard (Richie) Barreras. She is survived by her two sisters, Helen of Colorado, and Martha of Michigan; longtime companion, Garry Despins; daughter, Hortencia (“Tenchie”) Villaverde; and sons, David (Maria) Barreras of Superior, AZ, and Andrew (Danny) Barreras of Tempe, AZ. Lucy is also survived by her 15 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lucy leaves behind many friends, nieces, nephews. Celebration of Lucy’s life was held May 3 at Los Hermanos Ballroom. Arrangements were handled by Samaritan Funeral Home of Phoenix AZ.

The Superior Substance Abuse Coalition will be hosting their annual Win to Swim event on Friday, July 18, 2014. The event will begin at noon and will go through 4 p.m. at the Superior Junior Senior High Multipurpose Room. Children of all ages are encouraged to attend the educational event. Participants will receive a back pack and school supplies after they visit each prevention, safety and information booth at the event.

Any group or organization wishing to host a booth at the event should contact SSAC Chairperson, Elizabeth Magallanez at 520-510-8247. SSAC is also looking for volunteers to help with the set up and clean up for the event.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

I constantly hear how bad the Obama Administration is because of all of the scandals and I certainly agree that for-mer President Jimmy Carter’s legacy as the worse President in history is in jeopardy but I don’t think that’s the real sto-ry here. I think the real story is that we accept scandals so easily and believe this kind of behavior is normal. Let me briefly explain what I mean by recounting an incident that happened to me in recent months. This story is true and from my forty-four years of experience in education I think it is more common than one might think.

In March I resigned, as Busi-ness Manager, from the Cobre Valley Institute of Technology which serves Globe, Miami,

Hayden, Superior, and San Carlos. I told the Govern-ing Board that I would not compromise my credibility by continuing to work in the School District. (Strangely, they never asked what I meant by that statement.) There were a number of is-sues that brought me to this point but one in particular crossed a line I could not tol-erate. An employee was paid $2,121.00 out of a Federal Program for supposedly over-seeing the implementation of a grant for three of our mem-ber Districts. The problem was that this employee was not entitled to this money and the Superintendent knew that prior to approving payment. The following information should clarify this point.

The employee’s regular job description already covered overseeing Federal Projects. This meant that the employee was paid twice to do the same job.

There was nothing in the Federal Project that au-thorized the payment this employee.

The Superintendent, Pete Guzman, was told repeat-edly, by me, not to make the payment because it was not a legal expense and he autho-rized the payment anyway.

Outside Auditors deter-mined that the payment was an “ineligible expendi-ture” and stated in the exit report that the stipend may have to be paid back to the State. They also said that the employee’s documentation

Leading by Example?of work performed was “not complete and approved”.

I made a request to the Board President to place this item on the agenda because the Superintendent, Pete Guzman, refused my request. To his credit the Board President put the item on the agenda.

At a regular meeting of the Governing Board they refused to do anything about the situation and simply killed the matter by voting on the Superintendent’s recommen-dation to table the issue.

The Department of Educa-tion has been looking into the incident for some time but there has been no indica-tion that they want to get involved. Their position is that the amount is too small to worry about. They don’t

seem to be too concerned with the moral or legal impli-cations. The last I heard from the Arizona Department of Education is that they can’t find any information on the Audit. I’m not joking.

Throughout this entire or-deal I was made to feel that I was the problem. I was given the impression that I was making a big deal out of noth-ing and it would all go away if I would just shut my mouth. It was clear that if I wanted to continue to be a part of the fraternity then I needed to get in line with the Superinten-dent and Board. I was told that this was a distraction from all the good things that we were doing. In short the, “end justified the means “.

Is all of this a bit strange or I am going crazy? These folks

are your neighbors, friends, and relatives. They are just like you and I, except they chose to condone something they knew was wrong. There was not one good reason for them to allow this to happen! Doing the right thing would have been so easy but for some reason they decided to ignore the problem. How can they have so little regard for the truth? How can they be so much like the Obama Administration? /s/ Neil Barwick

Globe-Miami - One of the frequent complaints we hear from employers is the difficulty in finding quality employees to fill open positions. The Globe-Miami Chamber of Commerce is organizing a Job Fair in hopes of bringing employers and potential employees together. The Job Fair will be Thursday, July 31 in the Freeport-McMoRan training center in the Cobre Valley Plaza from 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. Anyone interested in meeting with employers is encouraged to attend.

Already 20 employers have confirmed attendance, including representatives from mining, retail, health, government, public safety and education. This event is a being put on by the chamber, in partnership with Freeport-McMoRan and the Arizona Workforce Connection. In addition to his love of the outdoors, he enjoys writing, volunteering in his church, and having fun with his three grown sons. School begins on Tuesday, July 22. Superior Jr/Sr High School will be having Pre-Registration on the following days; July 16, 1 p.m. -2 p.m for Seniors.; 3 p.m. - 4 p.m for Juniors.; 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. for 7th and 8th graders, 1 p.m. - 2 p.m. for Sophomores, and 3 p.m. - 4 p.m. for Freshman. Superior Arboretum Apartments get a new look

Superior, AZ – Renovations are on the way at Superior Ar-boretum Apartments. National Church Residences owns and operates the property, which is located at 199 Gray Drive. The approximate cost of the renovations is $800,000, and the areas being renovated are the building exterior, parking lot, sidewalks, site lighting and community space. The esti-mated completion date is Nov. 2014. The architect firm for the renovations is Alliance Archi-tects, and the construction firm is Tofel Construction. “The residents will be proud of their home with the exciting new look for Superior Arbo-retum,” said Kathy Kraushar, regional director for National Church Residences. “The town and surrounding cities’ busi-nesses will benefit from the various construction workers purchases of gas, food and supplies.” Superior Arboretum provides affordable independent hous-ing for seniors 62 years old and older, with rent based on HUD income guidelines. The community offers studio and one-bedroom unfurnished apartments. Rent includes basic cable TV (45 channels), water, sewer and trash. Ameni-ties include free laundry room, monitored emergency pull cord system, individual heat/air conditioning control, on-site service coordinator and much more.
