Hope the Yamuna doesn't end up embarrassing Delhi at

the CWG although some-type of cleaning should betaking place immediately, like keeping it litter free, tidy

and organise the river banks, plant trees, etc. Lime is agood for treating water however like Oates says the

first things first. they need to ban people shiiting by thebanks of the river which shall present both an unpleasant

sight and smell experience to the tourists. ban thosebuffaloes being bathed lavishly with soap and lots of

water. then give MCD three months notice to clean atleast the banks if not the bed. or else it wont be ignored

by the visitors during CWG.

already polluted yamuna.Whats the use of spendingcrores of rupees cleaning yamuna when it gets polluted

bans don't really work that well in india. I think india has

one of the strictest industrial pollution control norms, but

ultimately they aren't that well enforced and it's difficultto close down industries because we are a poor country,don't have trillions of dollars at our disposal like in

europe to upgrade. It is the fear of paying heavypenalties that has forced companies in europe to

upgrade their environmental protection methods.

I vote for forest. in the west whenever they are donewith a huge project like power plant, mine etc.. they

convert it back to what it was before. we are doing

deforestation left and right. at some point we need tomake a system to undo what damage we have done to

the environment.doing this will pay way for other projects which need to

be built in forests. if they do this then environmentalistwill be sure that once the govt is done with its project

they will get their jungle back.

Railways prunes plan for commercial space in CP

According to the revised plan, 50% of the area meant forcommercial utilization on the Paharganj side will be

reduced to get approval from DDA. According to the

earlier plan, the Railways had earmarked 5.5 lakhsqm area for commercial utilization in the non-

operational area. "It is expected to be reduced toabout 4 lakh sqmt in the revised plan,'' the official

said.

Sources at Northern Railway headquarters and railwayministry, however, expressed apprehensions about

raising the money. "It is a PPP project in a primelocation. UTTIPEC had asked us to reallocate the 1.5 lakh

Though Railways had submitted their plan to DDA twoyears back, it did not get approval, resulting in

cancellation of the tendering process for the Rs 12,000-crore New Delhi station project twice.

DDA has objected to the massive commercial utilizationplan on the ground that it would create a huge traffic

bottleneck in the area. "We will begin the tenderingprocess immediately after we get the DDA and Delhi

Traffic Police nod,'' added the official.

However, the operational area, including circulating area,platforms and booking area, remain intact in the revised

plan at 4.5 lakh sqm.

There are plans for creating various facilities likeshopping arcade, eateries and forex exchange booths in

the non-operational areas at New Delhi Station. TheRailways propose to develop 49 stations, including

Howrah, Patna, Lucknow, Mumbai, Bangalore andBhubaneswar as world-class stations.

to meet the high power demand that has left the capitalsweltering in the past. If it keeps its word, the rotational

loadshedding during hot summer nights and hardshipsfor students appearing in examinations may actually be a

nightmare of the past.

In the unusually hot summer of 2009 - April to

September - the average monthly deficit during peakdemand periods was 98 MW. But ahead of the

Commonwealth Games, the city government hasdeclared through an affidavit that Delhi became power

surplus last month, when total availability was 3,035 MWagainst a demand of 2,937 MW.

And, if the government is to be believed, February was

not a one-off month when the power demand happenedto be lower than supply. The government has already

provisioned for enough power to keep Delhi outage-freeright up to September.

In April, Delhi will have an availability of 4,405 MW

against a demand of 3,950 MW. The power outlook forother months is similar or even better. In May,

availability will be 4,592 MW against a demand of 4,500,June 5,029 MW against 4,850, July 5,207 MW against

4,750 MW, August 5,119 MW against 4,800 MW and inSeptember 4,977 MW would be available against an

estimated demand of 4,100 MW.

This should rob power companies of the excuse that theyhad to purchase expensive power in the midst of a

summer shortage while not being able to charge morefrom consumers. Discoms will be expected to ensure that

power delivery to the consumer is up to the mark.

Asked about the affidavit, Delhi government counsel SWasim Ahmed Qadri said it gives every possible detail

about the surplus power situation in the national capital.This is the first time since 1999, when SC started

monitoring the city's dismal power situation, that theDelhi government has presented a happy picture.

SC had on February 15 adjourned the hearing on thematter for two weeks while giving 10 days to Delhigovernment to furnish the current status report on the

power situation in the capital.

The affidavit says, "The summer position is anticipated tobe quite comfortable in respect of availability of power

vis-a-vis demand. Power availability situation is reviewed

on a weekly basis by thedepartment for ensuring that

any requirement of any remedial action in this respect isknown well in advance."
