Dr Hugo Vandenborre
Introduction
Solenco Power NV, founded in 2015, is a fast-growing SME innovator in the field of cleantech and
specializes in energy systems for family homes and commercial buildings. The Solenco Powerbox (SPB)
is the company’s first disruptive commercial energy storage product, which is approaching commercial
readiness.
If you listen to people’s daily grievances, bills - and especially utility bills - are inevitably high on everyone’s
list. Imagine what a game changer it would be to never have to deal with energy bills again. As incredible
as it sounds, this is actually possible today with the revolutionary Solenco Powerbox. People can be in
control of their own energy generation and consumption without having to rely on the electricity grid
and gas network ever again.
New technologies such as dispatchable generation, transmission/distribution expansion and demand
side management are being researched to tackle the increased share of renewable energy sources in
the European energy generation mix. On the consumption side, storage solutions are explored ranging
from batteries to flywheels, but until now an affordable solution that satisfies all stake holders had not
been developed.
Dr Hugo Vandenborre, the founder of Solenco Power and an authority in the field of hydrogen, is
convinced that energy storage will unlock the true potential of full-scale Renewable Energy Sources.
Vandenborre himself has extensive market knowledge, partially fueled by his previous endeavors.
(e.g. being the co-founder of NASDAQ listed Hydrogenics, HYGS), which led him to the design and development of the
Solenco Powerbox technology.
In the past few years, batteries -and more specifically lithium-ion batteries - have been hailed as the
solution for energy storage. But Solenco’s competitive decentralized power production and storage
system allows a shift in the energy model from central distribution to local generation and distribution
all while stabilizing the grid.
Where utilities are often trying to fight the rise of renewables because of obvious reasons, they actively
support and invest in energy storage (e.g. E.ON, the second largest energy company in Germany, recently
invested in Greensmith, a company developing software for energy storage). This is understandable,
because instead of having to build extra capacity to meet occasional peak demands, energy storage
avoids them having to invest fortunes to deal with the rare occasions where the grid is not strong
enough to meet demand.
On the other hand, the SPB system enables higher penetration (up to 100%) of renewables, where
currently only about 30% uptake is possible. And this is realized at lower cost than competing systems
The uniqueness of the SPB lies in the fact that it is the first fully green solution that allows users to go
off-grid. It enables households to be 100% independent from the electricity grid and gas network and
100% independent from price fluctuations in fossil fuels. The system is the missing link for mass uptake
of residential solar PV and the customer’s insurance against rising energy prices.
To future-proof the technology, an important element of the system is its built-in IOT (Internet of things) feature.

By leveraging IoT technologies, various metrics from the Solenco installations can be monitored and analyzed. Live
measurements and historical data are gathered in a centralized system that will not only provide information to improve
the system over time, it can also use these data for preventative maintenance and detailed problem analysis. In addition,
it allows the user to have up-to date information on the performance of their system. An easy-to-use customer interface
facilitates this experience.
Product
When used in a residential home, electricity is produced during the day through solar PV panels and the generated
power goes to its home appliances. Excess electricity is directed to the SPB which splits water into hydrogen and oxygen
through the reversible fuel cell technology. Oxygen is released to the air and hydrogen is stored as gas in cylinders. To
save space, these can be stored outside or underground. At night, the stored hydrogen can be transformed within the
reversible fuel cell into electricity and heat. The electricity goes to appliances and the heat is used for underfloor heating
as well as sanitary water heating.
The product has the potential to completely change the way renewable energy challenges are approached in the future.
It eliminates the uncertainty of supply and cost of energy for family homes and commercial buildings.
5
The SPB tackles the challenges in the energy market head-on, brings competitiveness to European energy companies
and will create a significant amount of jobs for the entire European market. To draw a parallel with a computer; without
a hard drive, it is severely limited. The same holds true for next generation smart grids, without energy storage, it will
always be gravely restricted.
Additional Uses of the System
The beauty of the system is that it is so versatile and that its benefits are not limited to electricity and heating requirements.
The SPB as a hydrogen fuel station: Hydrogen mobility is currently high on the European agenda, with hydrogen refueling
stations popping up everywhere. Flemish Deputy Prime minister and Flemish minister of Budget, Finance and Energy Bart
Tommelein recognizes that green vehicles are the future and that hydrogen cars have a huge role to play in this future.
They are free from emissions and the only by-product is water. The build-up of a hydrogen infrastructure in Belgium has
been endorsed by the government. In Berlin, the ‘Clean Energy Partnership’ between industry and the federal ministry of
transport is overseeing hydrogen cars and buses and has almost completed a network of 50+ hydrogen filling stations.
The first hydrogen train is set to start running in 2017. An action plan has been agreed upon to expand the network to
over 400 hydrogen filling stations in Germany by 2023.
In the United Kingdom, Transport for London has an entire network of hydrogen buses and several
London taxi companies have hydrogen cars in their fleet.

the drive around to find the closest hydrogen station
7

aquaponics system
8
Hydrogen infrastructure is a substantial investment, however part of this issue can be solved with the
Solenco Powerbox. Solenco Power is working on an add-on fuel pump which turns your SPB into a
hydrogen fuel station in addition to its core use. This means that you can refuel your car overnight in the
comfort of your own home.
Aquaponics
The system also provides a steady supply of oxygen. Oxygen is an incredibly versatile element. In industry,
it is used in water treatment and chemical combustion, but also to make steal and iron. In health care it
is used to help patients who have difficulty breathing, but also to destroy bacteria and to treat victims
of carbon monoxide poisoning. And the beauty industry has been tapping into oxygen’s benefits lately
for skin rejuvenation.
Solenco Power is aware that the oxygen in itself is a huge added benefit and has filed several patents
for its use in a variety of applications. An example of this is its use in aquaponics systems. Aquaponics
is also referred to as ‘city farming’ and combines the breeding of fish with growing plants in water.
Excretions of the fish are used as nutrients for the crops that are being cultivated. Adding the Solenco
Powerbox to this system not only makes the process cheaper and more Eco-friendly by providing heat
and energy storage, but it also generates oxygen to sustain the aquaculture. Solenco Power is in talks
with the United Nations for the use of this system in developing countries.
9
An intensive R&D program lead by Dr Hugo Vandenborre with support of Solvay SA, Belgium (SOLB)
resulted in a unique new device that combines the above mentioned two devices into one single unit.
This new device - referred to as ‘reversible fuel cell’ is protected by both European and international
patents. This breakthrough technology allows for easier and faster manufacturing of the SPB and results
in at least a 50% overall cost reduction.
This patented reversible fuel cell can transform electricity and water into hydrogen and hydrogen back
into electricity and heat afterwards. The heat takes the shape of hot water at a rated temperature of up
to 80°C. In between these actions the hydrogen is stored as a gas under pressure.
Principle
Up till now, two separate devices were needed; a device that splits water
into hydrogen and oxygen by applying current to two electrodes (see
left side in image on the right); and a device that produces electricity
and heat from hydrogen and oxygen or air (right side).

Installations
The first prototypes of the Solenco Powerbox have been installed in the field. Under a Horizon 2020 European Commission
funded project, referred to as NETfficient the first units were installed on the German island of Borkum. The project
combines different types of energy storage (such as supercapacitors, batteries and the Solenco Powerbox) to develop
an ‘energy storage smart city’. The purpose is to connect energy data and to involve all stake holder groups in the energy
value chain for a better living and working environment. In the image on the left, you can see the prototypes arriving at
the port of Borkum.
NETfficient is not the only European Commission project Solenco Power is involved in. The European Commission’s belief
in the Solenco Powerbox is such that they are currently funding three Solenco Power projects. The other projects are
SOUL-FI, an installation in a Future Internet framework and SMEINST, a grant specifically for SME’s with the potential
to become a European champion. In the framework of the SOUL-FI program, Fiware general enablers have been
implemented in the SPB allowing to manage virtual power plants based on the SPB product.
Another ground-breaking project is under way as part of a new living concept that creates energy independent modular
homes.
Domestic financial support schemes similar to past programs for solar panels, would be the next necessary step in
exploiting the full potential of the SPB. A similar plan would help get to the target price point as well as familiarize the
market with the product.
15
Brand
Solenco Power has worked with one of the best creative agencies in the world (Miew Creative Agency to come up with a
great corporate branding strategy that reflects what the product does. The cheetah in the logo represents power/energy.
The fact that a cheetah is a solitary animal reflects that the Solenco system is fully integrated and does not need the
main grid or any additional technology to do its job. And like a cheetah captures its prey to satisfy its energy needs, the
Solenco Power Box captures energy to satisfy the customer’s energy needs.
Being the fastest animal in the world highlights the efficiency of the Solenco system (90% round trip efficiency). It is
also a rare and endangered species, which not only underlines the uniqueness of what the product can do, but also
emphasizes the environment and sustainability issue.
What is equally important is that the product is not only functional, but that it is aesthetically pleasing, so it becomes
part of the customer’s home and everyday life. Most heating products today are very technical and not particularly nice
to look at. They are put away in the darkest corners of the house and not regarded as a feature of the home. The new
iteration of the SPB is designed in a way that is sleek yet practical, something you want to display rather than hide.
And much like Steve Jobs turned the Mac Book into a design piece, the fully commercial product will have a design which
allows it to step out of the shadow of its competitors.

Advantages versus the competition
There are currently several energy storage technologies on the market, of which Lithium- Ion batteries (e.g. TESLA
Powerwall) are probably the most well-known. But whilst these are good for small-scale storage, they are severely limited
in more than one respect. First of all, the cost remains high, especially when scaling up e.g. for seasonal storage. The
SPB on the other hand has a target price of €2.000 per kW (and a payback of as little as 6 years) for a commercially ready
system that lasts for a minimum of 25 years.
In addition to having a significantly more attractive market price, the SPB has grid stabilization capabilities and has a
home energy management system included, which can communicate with FI (Future Internet).
Another important distinction is the fact that the Solenco Powerbox integrates both heat and electricity in one solution.
And indeed, there are systems such as micro combined Heat and Power (mCHP), which also has the latter benefit.
However, these systems don’t have energy storage capabilities nor zero CO2 emissions.
Equally, both micro Combined Heat and Power and Li-Ion batteries still need a connection to the electricity grid and gas
network and neither one of these solutions is completely ‘green’.
This makes the SPB the first fully green energy storage solution that allows for 100% grid independence.
19
Panasonic has recently released a video in which they refer to what their ambition is for the future. They envision a
‘hydrogen energy society’ in which hydrogen will be produced from renewables instead of fossil fuels and in which
they dream about using hydrogen for storage to generate zero emissions. This ‘future’ is already a reality with the SPB.
This gives strong confidence that Solenco Power has developed a truly disruptive system well ahead of the market
competition.
Apart from the initial investment, one of the main advantages for households is that there are virtually no additional
costs. The maintenance cost per year is less than 0.7% of the Initial Investment for the entire lifetime of +25 years.
Over the past few years, batteries have been hailed as the holy grail in storage. But ultimately it comes down to cost and
range of services and a battery will never provide storage without degradation or be able to offer affordable seasonal
storage. Also, a battery has a limited amount of cycles. From a practical point of view, consumers don’t want to reinvest
or upgrade their system every few years. People are increasingly willing to make an upfront investment in energy, but
one that lasts.
A full like-for-like comparison is impossible because of the difference in technology and services that are offered, but if
you reflect on the comparison made above, the advantages of the SPB become very clear. It is also worth noting that the
Powerwall would need to be replaced before it reaches its payback point. In addition, owners of a Powerwall will still be
dependent on the grid and need a separate heating system, whereas the SPB owners won’t be.

Market
The long-term potential for the SPB is significant, especially given the unique benefits to the customer. As a comparison:
Panasonic sold thirty thousand gas micro-CHPs in 2 years and Viessmann-Panasonic sold over four thousand gas micro-
CHP units in the first year in Germany. Volume target for Solenco Power is to sell ten thousand units of the SPB (cumulative)
in the first 3 years of production, which starts when the product reaches commercial readiness.
Sales will be carried out in 3 phases. First Solenco Power will reach out to early adopters who are less price sensitive
before moving on to the mass market. More niche market such as home owners with unreliable grids will be tackled at
a later stage. In terms of geography, the company will sign its first deals in the Benelux and the rest of Europe, before
moving on to North America by 2019. By 2020, around twenty thousand units will have been installed and Solenco will
expand to Asia and the rest of the world.
That there is indeed an international market for energy storage is confirmed by the European Commission and the
Juncker administration. Juncker is a strong advocate for the increased uptake of renewable energies, not only for the
energy security it brings, but because he recognizes carbon emissions need to come down dramatically if the EU wants
to reach its climate goals. But as addressed earlier, more renewables on the electricity grid also means a more volatile,
unstable grid. Energy storage technologies help to mitigate this problem.
23
In his list of priorities, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker writes:
‘I want to keep our European energy market open to our neighbors. However, if the price for energy
from the East becomes too expensive, either in commercial or in political terms, Europe should be
able to switch very swiftly to other supply channels. We need to be able to reverse energy flows
when necessary. And we need to strengthen the share of renewable energies on our continent. This
is not only a matter of a responsible climate change policy. It is, at the same time, an industrial policy
imperative if we still want to have affordable energy at our disposal in the medium term. I therefore
want Europe’s Energy Union to become the world number one in renewable energies.’
Juncker’s vision is not merely an ambition, solar power capacity in Europe is almost half the world’s total and is 4 times
bigger than in the US. If Europe plays its cards right, it could become a hub for energy storage technologies as well.
Several energy storage solutions are currently being developed in Europe and energy storage conferences pop up all
over Europe. The EU is acknowledging its importance by promoting innovation in key technologies such as the Horizon
20202 program and developing suitable market rules. Grants and incentives have been developed to eliminate barriers
that currently exist such as administration, excessive fees and charges, cost of development and market uptake.

Epilogue
A drastically changing energy landscape calls for disruptive technologies. Mere peak shaving or demand response
balancing is no longer enough. The seismic shift from a centralized system to distributed energy is fueled by rising
energy costs, environmental concerns, and regulatory pressures. This trend towards smaller power-generation systems
for homes, businesses and communities asks for an integrated solution that can cater to all emerging demands such as
energy storage, but also one that has the flexibility to allow new business models to be developed, based on the end
user’s actual energy needs.
An increasing number of customers and emerging businesses are breaking away from a conventional system in which
residential energy needs, mobility and environment are isolated concepts. The starting point should be the overall needs
of the consumer and how these can be tackled in one single solution that is simple, environmentally friendly, affordable
and most of all, efficient. It is my conviction that a triple zero carbon Solenco Powerbox that can deliver not only electricity
and heat, but can also providefuel for your car, would be a perfect way to kick-start this new future of energy.

The Solenco Powerbox_________________________________________________________De ontbrekende schakel voor het grootschalige gebruik van residentiële fotovoltaïsche zonnemodules
Dr Hugo Vandenborre
Dutch Summary
31
In sommige gebieden
dalperiodes (bijvoorbeeld in Denemarken of in Duitsland).
netverbinding geen must.
• batterij met omkeerbare brandstof: vermogen in kW;
• waterstof opslagtank: energie in kWh;
• energetisch beheersysteem: controle-eenheid;
• cloud interface.
Uberwachungs Verein), SÜD, in Duitsland (www.tuev-sued.de).

• pile à combustible réversible: puissance en kW ;
• réservoir de stockage d’hydrogène: énergie en kWh ;
• système de gestion énergétique: unité de contrôle ;
• interface cloud.

• reversible Brennstoffzelle: Leistung in kW;
• Wasserstoff-Speichertank: Energie in kWh;
• Energiemanagementsystem: Kontrolleinheit;
• Cloud-Schnittstelle.
