CopyrightCopyright refers to authors or creators of work to have protection over their work and creates penalties for people who copy, distribute copies or recreate their work.

What do you need to rememberCopyright is a LAW protecting intellectual property and its creator. A work is copyrighted if it is Original, Creative, and Tangible.It is complicated! If you think it might be illegal, it probably is! (PowerPoint by Mia Kim Willaims)

Fair UseFair Use means limits to using authors work under copyright law. Under certain circumstances through authors permission and copyright you can use certain parts without it being considered copyright.

Four factors that fall under fair use The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes The nature of the copyrighted work The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole The effect of the use upon the potential market for, or value of, the copyrighted work

Is it fair use or not?

Uses of resources General Legal Use: legal use by publicFair Use: use under fair use guidelinesIllegal Use: violation under copyright or fair use guidelines

Examples of useGeneral Public Use: Purchasing and downloading a book onto your kindle and transferring it to your iPhone or iPad Fair Use: Facts or lines from your book and putting it into a paper for class with proper citation. Illegal Use: Using lines from your book with no citation or reference of the book.
