"Make copies of newspaper articles, TV shows, ad other copyrighted works, and use them and keep themfor educational use;

Create curriculum materials and scholarship with copyrighted materials embedded in them

Share, sell, and distribute curriculum materials embedded in them"

(Hobbs 10)

Copyright and Educators

The Book Summarizes: I Summarize:

Teachers and students can use outside resources to explain or emphasis a specific topic as long as it is used to educate.

These outside resources can be TV shows, articles from books or from online, clipart, etc.

Teachers and students can also share their work containing these outside resources

Students and Teachers Need to Watch Out For...

How much copyright material they use

Creating something new WITH their Copyrighted material

Transform the copyrighted material into something educational

There is no correct number or percentage that is correct Monitor the amount of copyrighted materials within lesson plans or projects

What are you using the material for? To make a new project? To make a new opinion shown? To set up a new logical argument? Etc.

Are you hitting a new audience or a new tone with this material? Are you using the original material for a different purpose?

Examples Using Key Words:

1. Taking Clipart from a website to create a new presentation on which scientist had a more accurate model of the solar system.

2. Changing the sounds to a movie trailer, could make it look like a family film or a horror movie to transform the audience.

3. Making a "How to" video using parts of youtube clips and clipart (how much)

Watch out for Charts and Percents!!!

(Davidson)

This relates back to How Much

NOT the law

Think of our bolded and underlined words instead :)

The Law of Fair Use Summarized

Factors in Section 107 of the Copyright Act:

1. The character of use and altered view

2. How the original work was displayed and presented

3. What amount and what sections is the user taking

4. Has the purpose or audience changed from the original work

(Education World)

How does four factors relate to our bolded and underlined words?

How do you think the four factors affect educators versus the real world?

Do you find fair use straight forward to understand or cloudy and up to specific situations?

Conclusions to Think About Before Stations

How Much, Create New, and Transform

There is a difference between real world use and educational use

Students will not always be under an educational use in the future

When should we teach our students about copyright?

Do not be afraid of using copyrighted materials, just be aware of why, how much, and when.
