Getting Started: Field Experience

• Participant-observer:– Participate and study class activities, child

development, teaching methods (part-time)

• Student teacher:– 10-12 weeks of full-day assignment to teacher

– You teach & are formally observed by a supervisor from your training program

– Usually –there are two placements (different grades)

• State authorization to teach public school– Teaching certificate or license

• For specific grades• For specific subjects

• Check your state Dept of Education website for:– Requirements (they vary by state)

Interstate New Teacher Assessment & Support Consortium (INTASC)

• InTASC represents a combined effort by numerous state education agencies and national educational organizations to reform the preparation, licensing, and professional development of teachers.

• Many states base their certification requirements on INTASC standards.
