The Babysitter Story By: Judie Eberhardt
Wendy was dreaming of the day she could start
babysitting. She was only 11 years old, but very responsible and loved children. Her mom said she would be a great babysitter, but not until she was at least 16 years old. Wendy thought that 16 was so far away. “You let me babysit Duke,” said Wendy to her mom. “But Wendy, Duke is the neighbor’s dog.” “That is a big difference.”
The next day, Wendy and her mom were at the grocery store and met one of their neighbors from down the street. Mrs. Olsen was saying she needed a reliable sitter for Saturday night. They needed to go to a party from Mr. Olsen’s job. Mrs. Olsen asked Wendy’s mom if she knew of someone that is responsible and available for Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Olsen had a 3 year old girl. Wendy’s mom said, “I can’t think of anyone.” Wendy said, “How about me?” “I’m responsible and love little Molly.” Wendy’s mom said, “Oh I don’t think so Wendy.” “Remember I said you are too young.” “I’m almost twelve,” said Wendy. “Besides it’s just three doors down from our house.” “Please,” begged Wendy. “Why not?” asked Mrs. Olsen. “Wendy knows Molly.” “I think it would be great.” “Okay,” agreed Wendy’s mom.
Saturday night came, and Wendy left for the Mrs. Olsen’s house at 5:00 and babysat for five hours and loved it. Wendy’s mom called her two times to check on her, and she wanted to see if everything was going well. Wendy said they drew pictures, read stories, and gave Molly a snack. What was even better was Wendy made $15.00! Now Wendy is the steady babysitter for the Olsen family. Her good babysitting skills have given Wendy some new babysitting jobs around the neighborhood. “I think when I get older, I would like to work in a daycare center,” said Wendy. “Then I can be with children all day long.”

Broken Wrist Story By: Andrew Frinkle
Jamie loved to climb things. Her mom said she’d been climbing
things ever since she was nine months old. She didn’t remember that
far back, but she sure did like to climb!
There was no tree she wouldn’t try to scale. A pile of rocks was
an invitation to climb. She’d scamper up and over every piece of
furniture in the house. She liked to clamber up into dad’s truck, too.
One day, she was climbing around on the weight bench in the garage, when she
suddenly slipped. She tried to catch herself on the way down, but landed strangely on her
wrist. A flash of pain shot up her arm from her wrist, and she started to cry.
Mom came outside and found her cradling her wrist. They went inside to ice it. Mom
was no stranger to cuts and bruises, but she could tell that this time was different. The
tenderness in the wrist didn’t go down.
The next day, Jamie’s wrist had swollen up and looked dark, almost bruised. She could
barely manage to touch it. It had been hard to sleep the night before, also. It was agonizing to
put any weight on the wrist or to try to carry something with that hand.
They went to the doctor, who took an x-ray. They found out that she had cracked two of
the bones in her wrist. They weren’t completely broken, which was great, but they were
fractured and a cast was required. She got a pink cast put on from her fingers down to her
elbow.
For several itchy weeks, Jamie had to be extra careful not to get dirt or water on the cast.
It started to smell after a while, too, because it was impossible to wash underneath there, and
her arm sweated under the cast.
It was a huge relief to get the cast off, finally. Her arm
underneath looked whiter than the other one, but a little sun would fix
that. Now she could get back to playing outside, swimming, and maybe
even a little climbing!
Jamie had learned to be a bit more careful, but she wasn’t about
to give up one of her favorite things!

Homerun Story By: Andrew Frinkle
Jaden loved to play baseball. He was good at it. He’d played ever since he
was very young, and now at age 10, he was working on being the MVP for his team.
Part of it was his good fielding at 3rd base, but his batting was great, too.
He stood next to home plate and tightened his batting gloves. Then he
adjusted his helmet and settled into his batting stance. With the bat waiving above
his head, he eyed the pitcher on the mound, waiting for the delivery with practiced
calmness.
The pitcher was slow about pitching, taking his time to make Jaden nervous.
He eventually nodded when he liked the catcher’s signal, and then wound up. The
ball came whizzing in, but Jaden didn’t swing. He could tell it was going low and
outside.
The slap of the ball in the catcher’s mitt was followed quickly by the
umpire’s call, “Ball 1!” Jaden smiled to himself. He was up in the count. He settled
into his stance once more and waited. He expected a good pitch this time.
The second pitch came; it was low but a decent pitch. Jaden took a poke at
it, and knocked it foul off down the left field line. He sighed and wished he’d hit it a
bit straighter, because it might have been a homerun. The count was 1 and 1.
The next pitch was meant to have Jaden go fishing for it, so the pitcher
would be up in the count, but Jaden wouldn’t bite. He knew it was going to be an
ugly pitch even before the pitcher wound up. The count was 2 balls and 1 strike.
The fourth pitch was going to be another bad one, but not too bad. It would be close to a strike, so the
umpire might make a bad call, but it wouldn’t be too nice. It would likely be inside and high, Jaden figured,
since those are harder to get around on and get a homerun. He took that pitch, too. The count was 3 balls and
1 strike, in his favor.
Now it got tricky. The pitcher could throw a crummy pitch, hoping that Jaden would swing at
something he expected to be a good pitch, or he could throw a fast one at one of the corners of the strike
zone. Which would it be?
Jaden gritted his teeth and stared up the mound at the pitcher. Something in the pitcher’s eyes said
fastball. Jaden tensed and waited for it. As it came, his heart seemed to slow, his breathing caught, and he
swung his bat.
There was a loud crack and then the white ball with red threads rocketed toward center field. Jaden
flicked his bat aside and took off at full speed, but it wasn’t necessary. The cheer of the crowd already told him
where his ball was going: it was a homerun.
Jaden laughed as the crowd started chanting, “MVP! MVP! MVP!” This was going to be his best season
ever!

My Computer Died! Story By: Andrew Frinkle
Henry’s computer began to act funny. It did this sometimes. It
might start acting slow, or programs would crash. That usually meant
it was time to reboot. Except, this time when he rebooted, the screen
stayed black a long time. When the screen finally showed something,
it was an error message.
Henry’s blood ran cold, and a chill ran down his spine. He
swallowed hard and rebooted again, only to get the same error.
“Okay, calm down,” he thought, “there must be an explanation or an
easy fix.”
He tried the few tricks he knew. He tried unplugging some of the devices. He tried
booting a different way. He tried running some recovery software. NOTHING WORKED. A sick
feeling welled up in his guts. His brain was telling him he was going to lose everything.
There was so much stuff on the computer he couldn’t afford to lose. There were songs
he liked, pictures from his vacations, homework files, stories he’d written, and pretty much his
entire life was on there! What would he do if he lost everything? Panic set in.
He worked furiously for a couple more hours, but the answer was always the same.
Even if he got the computer running, he would lose everything on it. He needed to start over.
It was a horrible though, and yet, if he had to start over, why not upgrade?
Suddenly, the idea of a new computer wasn’t bad, and it kind of soothed the pain of
losing every file on his old machine. He could start over with a faster, nicer, newer machine.
He had the money, but he hadn’t planned on buying one today.
A few hours later, he had a new computer. It was pretty
slick. It was brand-spanking new, with all the toys and stuff that he
could desire built into it. Now, he could even play the most recent
video games, things his old machine just hadn’t been good enough
to play.
He still missed his old files, but Henry was quickly falling in
love with his new computer. Sometimes, good things come of
disasters, good enough to overlook the losses.
