5. What do our users think?

We asked for 3 types of response:

I particularly liked…It would be good if perhaps it could…The following needs improving…Any other comments

Users were asked to indicate status: e.g. undergraduate, taught postgraduate, etc.Feedback was also sought on the interface welcome screen

User feedback

Aaaaargh confusing! What on Mars was wrong with the other interface?!

UselessBrilliantRefine searches is a great feature that helps with researchInterface, looks modern and up-to-date (until I click through to

a catalogue card). RSS support is great - but it's missing a new books by subject

feature.I particularly liked that I can see availability and signature code

on the first page of the entry page but I still need to do an extra click - why not put it on the main listing?

I've had quite a bit of trouble getting my students to search anything other than JSTOR because of the difficulty they find in the interfaces - Primo looks like it might solve that problem - it's much more intuitive (AMS lecturer)

User feedback

Ditch the old catalogue interface entirely. It is completely unsuitable to 2008 and frankly an embarassment [sic] as an information processing interface in a modern institution. There's no need for multiple card displays that make sense to a librarian but not a library user.

Opening some links in new windows unpredictably makes browsing a rather unpleasant experience.

It would be nice if I could add multiple items to eShelf from the search interface!

It would be good if it could have a 'cite it button', transforming the entry info into a correctly formatted citation in, say, the 3 main citation styles?

This is definitely a step in the right direction - too bad most of the user interface changes are at least 2 years out of date.

How can you spend money on a system that does not export directly to EndNote and does not support Zotero via the COinS format?

Information Services staff feedback

Appearance of front page user-friendly and colourfulI liked the fact that you can enter a search term and

switch between tabs without re-entering the search I liked article searching – seems easier than MetaLibOverall v. good and relatively easy to use. I am often

put off by new things like this. Wasn’t scary!I particularly liked the way it told you if a book was on

loan or notUser-friendly, easy to find what you need quicklyEasy to use. Lots of information. I like it a lot!Visually it is fairly easy on the eye and not too cluttered The speed of opening up the Library Catalogue needs

improving when click on “Get It” link

6. Impact on IL skills teaching?

Advice needed on constructing search strategies, selecting appropriate keywords, refining searches

I deliberately did less teaching of how to use the system to test how intuitive it really is

Users need help in evaluating the results and refining searches

Users strayed into Articles, etc. searching without realising what it was

Broadsearch provided a useful starting point for teaching database searching. Students move on to MetaLib and the full range of e-resources after first searching a smaller sub-set using Articles, etc. tab

7. Future developments?

IGeLU Steering Committee focus group 2008 looked at identifying developments that would allow Primo to replace Aleph OPAC
