By: Kristina Orozco “I knew this was possible, but for it to actually happen is unreal… I just graduated high school. I don’t know what my real life is yet. This is real life I guess, and it doesn’t feel like it,” America’s favorite dancer Ricky Ubeda a Coral Reef Senior High School alumni states in an interview. Since Season 1, the Class of 2014 graduate, Ricky Ubeda had one goal in mind: to one day be crowned America’s favorite dancer on So You Think You Can Dance. In order to ensure he did not make the same mistakes as previous competitors, Ubeda studied each of the 10 seasons carefully. He was inspired by SYTYCD to train hard and to “dabble” in every dance style because he knew once he turned 18 he would audition. In an interview for the Miami Herald, Ubeda shares, “My financial situation was rough…I had to have scholarships and raise funds so I can dance. It’s an expensive art.” As a single mother Ricky’s mother sacrificed so much for him to be able to dance every day at Stars Dance Studio for the past few years. He trained around the clock, partially putting other responsibilities on hold. Throughout the season, Ubeda kept an open mind and stayed true to himself, humbly and gracefully. “For some reason, people expected me to not have to work at anything, to just sail through. I think people think that I would just wake up in the morning and do Bollywood or the Waltz, things I had never done before. But I had to work my butt off in order to look good doing these things,” he shared. On September 3, the nation made their final decision on who they wanted to win, not surprising many. Now, he has been named So You Think You Can Dance’s Season 11 winner. “Ricky had won the American audience vote since day one, so it’s no real surprise for me,” executive producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe said to Entertainment Weekly. Perk’s accompanying the title of America’s favorite dancer include: Ricky receives the grand prize of $250,000; a role on Broadway’s musical On the Town, and a cover on Dance Spirit magazine. Unsure of what he will do with the money, Ubeda plans to seek a financial adviser so he can save and invest his money. Nevertheless, the utmost rewarding prize of them all was winning the opportunity of a lifetime. “I had to work really really hard for it,” Ubeda states. He has gotten support from family, friends, teachers, and even his partners at Stars Dance Studio who hosted viewing parties at Cadillac Ranch. Martha Cabrera, the Visual and Performing Arts lead teacher was not only an educator, but a mentor to Ubeda. The mention of Ricky’s name brightens her face, reminding her of their close bond. “I am so proud of him because this was his dream. He worked so hard as captain for the Cudettes, and it’ll only get better from here,” said Cabrera teary-eyed. She joked and said that he has already forgotten the little people at home. Mrs.Santalo, the dance academy’s lead instructor, said that she “misses him like crazy.” Congratulations Ricky! 10101 SW 152 Street Miami, FL 33157 October 2014 Volume 16 Issue 1 BAITLINE Get Ho ked Coral Reef Sr. High School http://crhs.dadeschools.net/ Freshmen News New guppy’s give perspective and prepare for 4 year journey - pages 3 and 5 World Cup Recap - page 8 - page 6 Upcoming Movies Summer’s blockbusters and this Fall’s first peek By: Jeselyn Labiste Goodbye summer break and welcome back school. Monday, August 18, 2014, Miami-Dade County prepared for the first day of the 2014-2015 school year. Students of Coral Reef Senior High woke up bright and early to take on the first day of school, well most of them did. For many, getting back into the daily routine of waking up at 5:00 a.m. and attending classes is a struggle, especially during the first week back. The initial day of school is the time when students catch up with friends and reminisce about their fabulous summer experiences. For the “Guppies,” it is the time to navigate the school hallways and find their classrooms. Many roam around the hallways, lost, and nervous, not knowing where to go. Business Senior, Aura Moreno helped several Guppies to their first period class because she felt "sorry for them and remembered how nerve-racking and scared she was during her first day of high school". The first day may be stressful with new class schedules and teachers. Causing many to fear how the entire school year will play out. VPA sophomore Erika Cantin said, “It was hard adjusting to school hours once again. Meeting up with friends that I haven’t hung out with last year was exciting, but another part of me was nervous about attending my new classes.” This is Erika's first year taking an AP class which she worries it may conflict with her cross- country schedule. She is determined to balance school work with extracurricular activities to the best of her abilities. For the graduating class of 2015, this was the last first day of school. Senior Cudas wore colorful crowns, showed their Cuda Pride, and received sunflowers in the front courtyard. Many had the chance to take pictures with their best friends with the grand 2015 sign. Student Government worked extremely hard to parade and celebrate the best first day of school ever. Business Senior and Executive Class Advisor, Ashley Perez rolled out of bed at 4:30 in the morning to collect the beautiful sunflowers, lay out the red carpet, and decorate the walls with "vibrant" posters. There is no doubt that the incredible work of senior class officers made a lasting impression on all Cudas. This will be another great year for the Barracudas. Our motto is to work hard and have fun. Baitline strives to provide quality student-led publications to the student body providing the school community with an open forum of public expression. In the publications class, students will make all editorial decisions including, but not limited to: generating story ideas, writing copy, editing copy, laying out copy, taking photographs, and handling all aspects of running the business end of a school publication. Because of this, any comments or concerns should be addressed to the editorial staff. Protests in Ferguson, Missouri lead to multiple arrests, a curfew, and it sparked debate over whether or not Black-on-Black crimes should cause equally as much turbulence as these interracial murders. On Saturday, August 9th, Michael Brown, an 18 year old, unarmed African-American young man, was shot and killed by a police officer while on his way home. This, subsequently, leading to weeks of protesting by Ferguson residents and thousands of people around the country. The reason, says Kirsten Cherry is that “they are tired of innocent black males, or African-Americans in general, falling victim to racial

discrimination and persecution;” especially when those involved “hold positions of authority.” Over the past 5 years, cases in which Black individuals were killed by white or Hispanic police officers or trusted figures have gone viral and sparked outrage throughout many communities. These cases include that of Oscar Grant, Trayvon Martin, Jordan Davis, Renisha McBride and Alfred Wright. These cases became even more controversial as many felt that justice was not being served due to the victims’ race. Many a r g u e

whether African-Americans should be as passionate when discussing the issue of Black-on-Black crimes. After all, these occur

more often than the police shootings.

According to FBI crime statistics for year 2011, when white individuals where the v i c t i m s ,

2,630 out of 3,172 of the known offenders were of the same race. When Black victims were targeted, 2,447 out of 2,695 of the offenders were also Black. Student, Safiyah Baxter argues that ‘’ although [same race crimes] occur more, as they do in every racial group, we cannot hold everyday civilians up to the same standards as officials.” As protests for Michael’s murder come to a halt, many still feel much progress is needed to overcome the effects of the, seemingly, racially bias system that is our government. “Respect” said Taylor Burey, “they have none for us and our lives and they are given the authority to act accordingly.”

By: Analexis Sanchez There is one thing on every senior’s mind right now and that is college applications. From having to check if they have met their high school requirements or finishing that last SAT or ACT, this is one of the most stressful times in a senior’s life. Most students have to worry about how to stand out to the college application readers with perfect essays. Some students have been preparing since before senior year like Gabriella Roper of the legal academy, “I have been preparing by taking my SATs and with typing up a rough draft of my college essays before summer started. With all this preparation it has made it easier in this hectic time of year.” Some tips that might help some of the seniors or juniors prepare for college would be to start making a list of schools that they like and plan on attending if accepted. Then as time progresses students need to narrow down the

list of schools and see if they can afford tutition, even maybe visit the schools if possible. Mr. Hyatt, the business counselor recommends, “Students should apply to at least five schools either in state, out of state, or both.” During junior year and maybe even the beginning of senior year students should be studying and taking the SAT and ACT. Near

the end of the year for juniors they should have already narrowed down their list of schools and start typing up their resumes and a rough draft of their essays. During the summer when the applications and essays go out, students should finalize their essays

and see if they need to take more standardized testing. At the beginning of senior year, students should begin applying if they are doing early action or decision. By November 1st students who applied for early action/ decision should have already finished with the application and turned everything in. When asked what advice

she recommends for the students applying to college Ms. Shapiro, CAP advisor, said, “Students should read my emails, which are sent weekly, that pertain to helping students in applying and scholarships.” She also states that “some

scholarships are supposed to be turn in to the college/university before the November 1st deadline. So students need to make sure they are on top of the deadlines for them.” Regular applications are due between the months of October through January depending on the school of choice. If students follow some of these tips they can be successful with college applications and make sure not to miss any deadlines! After all the applications done and completed with, students should start looking into scholarships. Most colleges/universities provide some sort of scholarship or financial aid, especially some out of state schools to help students pay for the large tuition. If students follow these tips and advice that has been provided for them, it should make the whole application process a lot easier and less stressful.

The Dreaded College Applications

A Guppy’s High School Perspective

We were once all guppies, but now it’s time to step aside and let the class of 2018 take their turn. We all remember the day when we first walked the crowded halls of Coral Reef High and we all thought to ourselves “Wow this is really high school.” Most of us didn’t know what to expect. When we were freshman, no one ever asked us for our perspective. How did we feel walking in? How about when we saw all the upperclassmen with their crowns and sunflowers or the Juniors with the J’s hanging around their neck? “Walking in for the first time, I felt nervous and didn’t know if people were going to like me or not because everyone is judgmental at first but it was the best first experience ever,” says freshman, Felipe Perez from the Business academy. Seeing that every freshman’s first initial reaction is being worried about people judging them I decided to ask the same question to sophomore Jailene Torres, a medical student, she said, “I was honestly really anxious because my eighth grade class was of 43 students and now in 9th grade there were going to be over 800. It was a different environment.” All of us have different thoughts when it comes to thinking about the high school life. Kevin Rivera, freshman in engineering academy, talks about what he expected high school was going to be like, “I expected it to be really fun and filled

with different, new experiences.” Most of us probably expected it to be all fun and games but once you’re at Coral Reef, it’s all about studying hard so you can strive for the best and most importantly make Principal Leal proud! Getting accepted was the start of your high school experience. “When I opened my acceptance letter I was filled with excitement after reading the words ‘congratulations.’ I was so relieved after reading the letter and beyond happy.” said Emily Sherwood, sophomore in the VPA academy. With the first pep rally coming up and homecoming coming soon, most freshmen may think this is already fun and it’s amazing, but what they don’t know is that it’s only the beginning. High school comes and goes in the blink of en eye. Soon enough the seniors are going to be wishing they weren’t leaving yet, because they’re going to miss hanging around the reef. Soon the class of 2018 will have their first memories of walking into Cuda Nation. Most of us have already made memories that will stay with us forever. If it was either at a pep rally or at your first high school football game or even getting a detention on the first week of school, those memories will carry on with us until we graduate. It’s okay, guppies nothing to be sad about yet! You still have a long way to go. Seniors that are soon to be graduating are still reminiscing their days when they were just freshman. “My favorite memory of freshman year was when I got late to class and I walked

in and everyone was staring at me. I sat down and saw that there was these two girls sitting next to me and we talked for a while and we just clicked instantly. Since that first day, we’ve been best friends.” says senior, Alexa Ledain,in the medical academy. But, soon they will be leaving the reef too always remember once a Cuda always a Cuda. Freshmen don’t start getting worried now! Soon enough you’re going to be moving on up and aren’t going to be FRESHmeat anymore!

“Walking in for the first time, I felt nervous and didn’t know if people were going to like me or not because everyone is judgmental at first but it was the best first experience ever.”

4 Coral Reef Sr. HighOctober 2014 Summer

By: Ashley Perez

Summer 2014 was all about thrilling and adventurous travel. Coral Reef students opened their eyes to new cultures filled with delicious foods, enticing landscapes, and unexpected treasures. An ideal summer would be traveling to an unknown destination or experiencing something you have never done before. Each year thousands of students set out on having the most incredible summer of their lives and this year Reef students did not disappoint. Business senior, Claudia Perez-Brito and business sophomore, Jaylin Labiste both traveled to historical Europe. Claudia visited the famous Louvre Museum in Paris, France. “It’s amazing what people can do with such an old civilization.” Claudia also visited the world’s tallest ferris wheel, the London Eye along the River Thames. Claudia then toured the Warner Bros. Studios in southeastern England where they showcase major sets, props, and costumes from the Harry Potter film series. Claudia commented, “Everything was intact and smaller than what you would expect.” She also rode the renowned three-decker bus and said it was “very rickety.” She spent some time in Notre Dame de Paris, a cathedral built from French Gothic architecture and one of the largest church buildings in the world. Claudia explained the cathedral was amazing and kind of magical. Business sophomore, Jaylin Labiste also traveled to northern Europe this summer. She went to Lucerne, Switzerland; home of the most expensive McDonald’s she said, “It

tasted exactly like a McDonalds in the US.” She also saw the Rhine Falls, which is the biggest waterfall in Europe located in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Jaylin said, “It wasn’t as magnificent as Niagara Falls but it was still beautiful.” Jaylin also said the Swiss chocolate lived up to its name calling it “divine”. Jaylin also visited Amsterdam where the popular summer movie “The Fault in Our Stars” was filmed, she said she couldn’t find the famous bench where Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace sat on so she just sat on a random bench and pretended. She also commented “Amsterdam has more bikes than people, the main transportation is through bicycle and there are also a lot of pretty boat houses.” Jaylin and her family attempted to enter the Anne Frank Museum but she said “the line was longer than a Black Friday line at Wal-Mart” but she took pictures to have as a keepsake. On the bright side she tried Belgian waffles with a slab of Nutella, strawberries, and ice cream. Business senior Jada McGill visited New Orleans, Louisiana, Jada said she walked along the famous Bourbon Street which is in the heart of New Orleans oldest neighborhood, The French Quarter; it extends from Canal Street to Esplanade Avenue. She also said she ate the traditional dish of New Orleans called gumbo and commented that it was “delicious.” Gumbo typically consists of a strongly flavored stock, okra, meat, or shellfish, a thickener, and vegetables like celery, bell peppers, and onions. Jada said “I caught Mardi gras beads and it was so much fun.”

Summer 2014: NOT A BUST!

By: Amanda Bedoya With a new year, come new students, new memories, and even new teachers so, it’s our job to make sure that they feel welcomed to the Reef. Some transferred from other schools while others are excited to start their first year teaching. With rigorous schedules and many things to do, it may be hard to meet some of the new teachers, so I went ahead and interviewed two outstanding people. Coral Reef welcomes the new lead teacher for the Academy of Business and Finance, Ms. Mirabal, who comes from North Miami Beach Senior High School. She has had many years of experience of teaching at different High Schools. Ms. Mirabal earned her Bachelor’s degree from Florida International University as well

as her Masters at American College. Ms. Mirabal is very eager to start off her first year at Coral Reef. “I’m excited for the experience of teaching here, having my students pass their first EOC in accounting, and being able to join the FBLA members when they go to nationals.” said Ms. Mirabal. Although we may only be one week into the first quarter, she “loves the reef” so far and we hope she continues to throughout the school year. The Academy of Agriscience and Engineering also have the privilege of welcoming a “new” teacher into their academy. Mr. Gornail has been a substitute at Coral Reef for quite a few years. However; this year is his first as an actual teacher. Throughout the year, he hopes his “students make a mark on the world and do something that they remember here at the

Reef.” As a teacher, he wants to ensure an enlightening learning environment where his students can see the course as something other than a requirement. Mr. Gornail also commented on how he was enjoying the reef, “I love it, all of it. The students, the experience, the enthusiasm, everything.” He continued speaking about his most surprising moment as a teacher, “That would probably have to be a child that I knew when he was very young and now he is my actual student.” As the year goes by, we will all become accustomed to our new schedule, teachers, and students. We look forward to learning from such inspiring and dedicated teachers who put in effort in guiding us to live more prosperous lives. All the new teachers wish not only students but also the rest of the staff the best of luck this school year.

5Coral Reef Sr. HighOctober 2014 Summer

By: Rachel Holtzman

Summer is usually about having fun and going to the beach, but for this year’s business seniors it meant summer internships. Internships can help students gain knowledge and work experience, develop new skills, and broaden their networking opportunities. Plus, references from people in the industry will really add an extra something to your application. Also, it is an extra credential you can add to your resume. The business academy seniors worked in different fields including banks, summer camps, girl scouts, and even the school board member’s office. Last year, The Academy of Finance made history and became a distinguished academy, and with almost every single class of 2015 student accomplishing the internship the academy keeps on thriving. Business senior Kayla Mendez worked at Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida for five weeks from 9 to 5 every Monday to Friday. Mendez says, “I had a fun time there, and all of my co-workers were very nice and friendly. It was a great experience.” Kayla mostly worked on the computer on a program called “personify,” where she entered new customer information and edited information of renewing members. She entered their birthdays, name, address, and phone number. The internship helped her catch a glimpse of what a career is really like. Isabella Pellon, also a Business senior

worked at Executive National Bank in the Operations Bank. “The internship has helped me gain valuable work experience and has taught me proper work ethic,” Isabella said. She learned more about how a bank runs and all of its individual departments. Isabella added,” I mainly worked with the commercial treasury department and dealt with closed accounts. It was fun especially at lunch time when I was able to take a break and socialize with my co-workers.” During the business student’s junior year, they developed skills in order to be successful at their internship workplace. They do mock interviews, create resumes, and perform oral presentations in front of the class. Presenting in front of class builds up the student’s confidence so they can feel more comfortable and relaxed when speaking in front of people. The business academy definitely prepares you for the “real world.” “For future interns in the business academy, it is vital to turn in your work on time. Also, make the best out of this amazing experience and cherish every second of it because it will pass by with a snap of a finger,” says Aura Moreno. She worked at City Desk Miami, which is a co working space for entrepreneurs, creative community builders, and businesses located in downtown Miami. Moreno had to answer calls and give yours around the offices to prospective

clients, and one of the visitors even rented an office from her! She explained that an exciting part was when she suggested ideas for the interior design of the building, and made healthy smoothies at the office every morning. Her experience was remarkable and unforgettable.

Bright and early on the first Monday of summer, incoming ninth grade freshmen prepared to attend Ready for the Reef: a fun exciting week filled with new faces, fun activities, and an insight to the foreign territory of what was to become their home for the next four years of their life. “As a senior, looking back at my experience with Ready for the Reef, I realize that without it I would have been completely lost on my first day of school. In Ready for the Reef, I was able to meet new people that I would have in some of my classes. I was able to meet some of my teachers and staff members I would be seeing for the next four years. Ready for Reef was a great way for me to meet my new family at school,” said Rebecca Adler, Academy of VPA Class of 2015 Ready for the Reef offers a fun, safe and open environment for the newcomers to get accustomed to their surroundings. Rotation of the classes and teachers throughout the week, gave the opportunity for freshmen to get to know some of the teachers they could possibly have in their upcoming schedules

during the course of the next four years spent in Coral Reef. All this offered with a side of exciting games and activities, where freshmen can meet some of their fellow classmates and make a variety of new acquaintances. Freshmen who attended were at an advantage the start of the 2014-2015 school year. At the event, freshmen were given a chance to taste the atmosphere Reef has to offer. “I think the best part of Ready for the Reef was the fun

activities we did. The Reef games really sparked up everyone in the gym and it made the experience more enjoyable,” said Andres Sanchez, Academy of Engineering Class of 2018 During the next four years freshmen can expect rigorous courses in academics. Definite challenges, extracurricular activities to expand your horizons, a variety of fresh and familiar faces throughout each year and a growth in strength and social aspects in your life are some of the key points

you’ll see within your high school experience. “It’s hard but in the end it’s all worth it,” Bridgette Londono, a junior in medical academy, states. Coral Reef is ranked thirteenth within Florida according to usnews.com. On their website it claims to be Miami’s Mega-magnet High School and it is definitely true. By: Nicanor Lapaix Many amazing films came out this summer, such as Guardians of the Galaxy, Lucy, and Godzilla. Guardian of the Galaxy is Marvel’s newest film and it has become very successful. It branches Marvels film Universe into the stars as an action based space adventure. It does well to show off the multiple planets and alien species giving the excitement most felt watching a star wars movie. The guardians are Peter Quill/Star Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Groot, and Rocket. Quill is the only human from this group, Gamora is a female green alien, Drax is Gray with tattoos, Groot is a humanoid tree and Rocket is a raccoon. These 5 except Drax are transported to a prison for public disturbance while Drax is already in prison. Whilst there they come up with a plan to escape and sell the stolen artifact they were fighting over. Drax decides to tag along so he can get revenge on the main villain. Through sheer luck and Rocket’s expert planning they’re able to make it out. I’ll end the summary here but If you haven’t already, I highly suggest you watch it, you won’t regret it. “When I saw Guardians of the Galaxy, I immediately knew that it was going to be my new favorite movie of all time,” said Omar Thomas. Lucy is another movie that came out during the summer. The premise is of a girl named Lucy who was on a delivery job when things went horribly wrong. She got captured and became a tester of the new drug. The drug allowed Lucy to gain maximum potential of her brain from 10% to an impossible 100%. She uses this new found power to get revenge on the people that did it to her. I didn’t

have the chance to see this movie but here is what some students have to say about it. “The movie was decent but I honestly didn’t understand some points in the plot,”says Louis Dorta. “I liked the movie it should what could be possible if someone can access more potential of their brain,” says Diego Garcia. The last movie that I will mention here is Godzilla. It’s a reboot of the original Godzilla in modern times. It’s set in the present day, fifteen years after the unearthing of two chrysalises in a mine in the Philippines. From the pods come two giant radiation-eating creatures, known as “MUTOs,” which cause great damage in Japan, Hawaii and the western United States. Their awakening also stirs a much larger, destructive, ancient alpha predator known as “Godzilla”, whose existence has been kept secret by the U.S. government since 1954. “I like Godzilla it had a perfect mix of action and destruction that kept me on the edge of my seat,” said Alex Mitchell. Enough about summer, here are some fall

movies that I highly recommend you watch in theaters. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, Big Hero 6, Dracula Untold, Boxtrolls and The Maze Runner. The Maze Runner and The Hunger Games are two critically acclaimed books that will hit theaters this fall. The first two movies of The Hunger Games did very well with staying true to the book and giving us an action packed hunger games. The release of Mockingjay Part 1 will be on November 21. The Maze Runner is about a boy named Thomas who has his memories erased and is trapped with a bunch of other guys in a

maze. The only way out is to search the maze for an escape route. This hits theaters on September 19. Big Hero 6 and Boxtrolls are both animated movies with a lot of potential. Big Hero 6 is created by Disney and from what the trailers show it will be another great Disney movie. I see no reason that this will not be another great movie considering Disney’s latest creations in Frozen and Maleficent The Boxtrolls is a childrens book by Alan Snow that will be made into an animated film. The premise is that an orphaned boy is raised by underground cave dwelling trash collectors. An evil exterminator comes by and he has to save his friends from him. It will hit theaters on September 26. Dracula Untold tells the story of how Dracula became into being. The trailer speaks wonders about what this film’s potential is and I have high hopes that it will do well. This hits theaters on October 17.

Summer and Fall Movies 2014

By: Brian Phillips All across the nation people are dumping buckets of ice water over themselves in support of the ALS Association. And honestly, who can really deny a challenge like dumping a bucket of ice over your own head? The origin of dumping a bucket of ice water over one’s head is unknown, but the challenge has spread across the

northern hemisphere like a virus. Everywhere people are being nominated to take part in the challenge. The rules include a time frame of 24 hours after being nominated, the participant must start off by filling a bucket with water, adding a bag of ice to it, and pouring it over themselves or having someone else do it for them. After these steps are complete, the

participant may then call out three nominations so others can partake in their own challenge. At the beginning of August the ALS Association sent out a press release creating the challenge and naming it ‘The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.’ By the end of the month, the Ice Bucket Donations have reached about $88.5 Million dollars. The nominations have spread everywhere from famous celebrities, to students of Coral Reef Senior High School. On August 29th, 2014, during lunch, the VPA Academy teachers did the challenge in front of the Barracuda. With a cheering crowd of students surrounding them, the VPA teachers, led by their lead teacher Ms. Cabrera, became one of the first Barracuda’s to do the Ice Bucket Challenge in school. After the challenge, when the water had been poured, and everyone had their laughs, Ms. Cabrera said this: “It was super refreshing. We’re proud to have done this in honor of Mr. Rose.”

By:Emily Lastre From the start of this school year, there have been some minor changes, like some new technology. The freshmen now get new tablets as books, and there are now new smart boards called Promethean in every class. These tablets are only limited to the freshmen’s World History classes. Tablets are an easier way to move books without carrying around so many books. World History teachers would agree that these tablets for the freshmen are a great idea. “Everything has been good with these new tablets, with some minor server problems but it’s been smooth. Since September 4, 2014, the kids have been able to take home some of the tablets and couldn’t be more excited…It’s better for the freshmen to get these tablets so they have an early start with them, then by the time they are seniors they would be experts with this new system.” ~ Mr. Bevilacqua, Word History teacher This could be a great experience for the freshmen to learn about the responsibility with taking care of a tablet than a book that could be replaced every couple of years. While teachers think it’s a good idea for freshmen to get tablets, some upper body classmen think the opposite. “I don’t think it’s fair that freshmen get tablets. If any one class should have gotten tablets it would be the senior class… tablets would take off a lot of weight, but hardcover books are better…to be honest, I think the school could have used the money for the tablets for something better.” ~ Jessica Patel, Academy of Business & Finance, Class of 2016 The new Promethean Boards seems to be popular with some students. But, the teachers seem to barely know how to use it. “The school should have set up a meeting or something for the teachers could learn how to use the new board. The teachers waste more time trying to work the board than teaching to their students.” ~ Tamieyah Johnson, Academy of Legal & Public Affairs, Class of 2017. It would be easier to help the students learn if they aren’t trying to learn how to work the board. Some students think that the Promethean boards are not needed. “The school board over did it with these Promethean Boards. There’s a board in the orchestra room and it’s strongly unneeded there.” ~ Alexis Artamendi, Academy of Health Science, Class of 2016. “The new boards are great and all, but they weren’t to be in every classroom.” ~ Emily DeBiase, Academy of Visual and Performing Arts, Class of 2016. The school might get more upgrades throughout the school year and it will affect everyone. Like the teachers adjusting with the new Promethean Board, or the freshmen class being the first to get tablets in the school, which could advance their technology skill level, while technology itself advances. “It’s great that the school is getting upgrade with so many new tech, but there is a limit on too much technology” ~ Melissa Maguina, Academy of Health Science, Class of 2016

By: Derek Rodriguez What everyone had expected to be a fantastic series between the Miami Heat and the San Antonio Spurs, full of acrobatic shots and amazing plays was instead replaced by a blowout by their dreaded rivals; all of this, plus something we don’t think ANYONE had expected. In the summer of 2013, the Miami Heat had survived an excruciatingly stressful game 6, with our team being down by five points, and only having 29 seconds to redeem themselves of what most people had already foretold. LeBron hitting a long three-pointer to bring the game to two, foul Kawhi Leonard, bring the ball back across the court with a deficit of three again, and then the magical play that we all know and love. Ray Allen takes a pass from Chris Bosh from a rebound, and shoots the ball with 5.2 seconds on the clock to tie the game; later becoming what had won them the championship. However, that is sadly an entirely different story than what had occurred this summer. A blowout in Game 1 by the Spurs. A close call by the Heat in Game 2 (the only game they will win), and the rest being blowouts once again, by the Spurs. In the 2014 NBA Draft, the Cleveland

Cavaliers won the first round pick, known as Andrew Wiggins, who is expected to be an all-star later on in his career. Not only that, but they also gained Kyrie Irving in the 2011 NBA draft who is already an all-star in his own ways. The entire world had expected LeBron James to stay with the Miami Heat and compete for another NBA championship. We all thought that he would still be living comfortably in his beach home in Miami, Florida. Not exactly what happened. LeBron James made a very formal, hand-written letter to the entire world about his departure from Miami, and his arrival in Akron,

Ohio. In the letter, he stated that he wanted to give back what the people of Cleveland had given him; in this case, loyalty. Many people, however, believe that there were alternate reasons for this decision; such as the team members they had obtained during the summer. Some say, if Cleveland had not gotten a top pick, LeBron would still be in Miami. On the other hand, many people believe what LeBron had stated in his letter, that he missed his home and wanted to repay the Cavs for the harm he had done to them. “LeBron’s rejoining of the Cavaliers, as painful as it was for the Heat fans, was the smartest free agency decision since he made his decision to join the Heat in 2010. In both the short and long term, both James

and Cavaliers shall benefit from this tremendous move,” said Logan Roth. Either way, the Miami Heat has lost the greatest player in the world, and there is nothing that we can do to change that. What we can do, however, is change what could possibly happen in the 2014-2015 NBA season. Will the Heat have a good enough chemistry where they will be able to compete in even a conference finals? Will the new additions to the team live up to their expectations, or go above what even they could imagine? We will have to wait and see what will happen, and only time can tell.

NBA Finals and Off Season

Recap on the 2014 Fifa World CupBy: Carlos Tolledo On June 12th the world descended on Brazil for the largest sporting extravaganza in the world. The Fifa World Cup, a tournament filled with hardship, success, and determination. A total of 32 nations went into the jungles of Brazil with one goal in mind, to reign victorious as the best football nation in the world. One team reigned supreme in the end and that was the dynamic squad from Germany. In the course of the Cup, I was left speechless on various occasions by the spectacular show put forth by all the nations that participated. There is a myriad of views about the teams, the best player, or even how well Brazil hosted the event. I had a chance to sit down and talk to Coral Reef Senior High School soccer coach Mike Ayedemi and ask him about the Cup and what he thought about it. My very first question to coach was “What did you think about the World Cup in general?” “By far this was the best World Cup ever, I have seen many in my time but this was the best by far,” Coach Syedemi said. I then asked coach the question that was raging through

the minds of all football fans around the world…. “Who do you think was the MVP of the World Cup?” After pondering the question for a moment Coach responded with: Thomas Müller, eleven goals in the past two world Cups, very consistent, and his team won so why not him? Many concur with what coach stated, Müller had a wonderful cup and showed many people around the world why he is one of the best in the world. Germany, the champions, was the team that Coach picked to win the tournament, but being a native Nigerian, at heart he cheered for them. My final question to Coach Mike was, “What do you think about the next location for the Tournament in Russia?” He then stated, “Having the World Cup in Europe would have been great, but Russia has a rich history, I don’t mind it. The game has a way of changing the location.” A native German and devoted football fan, Mr. Krause, the AP Government and Macroeconomics teacher, instantly agreed to sit down with me and talk about the game he loves.

My first inquiry was how well he thought Brazil prepared to host the World Cup, he responded quickly by saying, “Not very well.” Mr. Krause also added that

he hopes for better preparation for the Olympics which are to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Afterwards I asked him whether he felt that the Germans deserved final victory, he then stated “Yes, very much so, they played very well, I was very happy about Germany winning.” He finally added that he is a huge Germany fan. The final question I asked Mr. Krause was what he thought of the next location for the World Cup in Russia. He had an interesting view about the politics involved with the situation, one that many people do not recognize or know about. I asked him about it and he responded by saying “Terrible, the second that Russia annexed Crimea, they should’ve pulled back on having the Cup in Russia.” Without a doubt the situation in Russia is concerning, the series of events could ruin the possibility of a Russian World Cup. In the end 32 countries went into the tropical jungles of Brazil and a single rose from the woods. After 64 matches, a champion was crowned, Germany, giving them their fourth World Cup championship. A victory they no doubt will never forget, a victory the World will never forget.

Mr. Krause celebrates the victory of Germany during the World Cup.
