Orthodontics & Dentofacial

Orthopedics

The orthodontic specialty involves alignment of teeth,

improvement of the bite, and improvement of how the

jaws relate to each other.

Orthodontics is about more than just

teeth; it can help balance your skeletal,

dental and facial structures including the

function of the jaws.

Orthodontics can

improve your self-

image, chewing and

may help you

breathe and speak

more clearly.

The American Association

of Orthodontists recommends

an orthodontic evaluation be made by

the age of 7. This will help to

determine how the jaws and teeth are

developing and will show if there is

sufficient room to accommodate all

the teeth.

Certain growth

patterns are best

treated early and can

really improve final

results.

On the other hand, orthodontics has

changed over the years and treatment is no

longer considered only for children. In

fact, 25% of orthodontic patients are

adults.

The following are a list of common

orthodontic problems. You will probably

see a problem that applies to you or

someone you know.

• Crowding

• Improper Bite

• Excess Overjet

• Crossbite

• Overbite/Deep Bite

• Open Bite

Crowding

Most obvious problem

Occurs when there is not enough room for all of the teeth to erupt

Corrected by realignment of the teeth, expansion of the arch or extraction of teeth

Crowding

Crowded or malaligned teeth do not look good and may affect the attractiveness of the smile.

Also, they are hard to keep clean which can lead to cavities and periodontal disease.

Improper Bite

An improper bite can cause excessive wear and possibly fracture of the teeth. It can also lead to jaw problems such as clicking and popping which can also cause pain.

Some orthodontic

Problemsare not always obvious and need a special evaluation.

Excess Overjet

Before

After

The upper teeth are positioned further forward than the lower teeth

Creates protrusion that is not attractive and also makes the front teeth vulnerable to trauma.

Crossbite

Before

After

One or more of the upper teeth fit to the inside of the lower teeth

If left untreated, it can cause jaw shifting and asymmetry problems which can result in excessive wear on the teeth.

Overbite/Deep Bite

Excessive overlap of the front teeth.

When the teeth close together, the lower teeth can only be seen slightly or not at all

Often causes excessive wear of the front teeth

Open Bite

Front teeth do not touch when biting. This can cause excessive wear on your back teeth.

It also makes it difficult to chew with the front teeth

Your consultationwill consist of a thorough exam and special diagnostic records

in order to determine the best treatment plan.

Diagnostic Records

Panoramic x-ray shows the position of teeth and root relationship

A head x-ray shows your growth pattern and how your teeth and jaws fit together in relationship to the face.

Photographs of your face and teeth

Orthodontics has changed over the years

and there are many options to patients. Our practice is very progressive and you may be a candidate

for some of these options.

Metal Brackets

Traditional braces

Consists of brackets, wires and colored ligatures

Bonded to the teeth

Precise movement

Ceramic Brackets

Metal brackets are no longer the only option

Ceramic Brackets are clear and barely visible.

Rapid Palatal Expansion (RPE)

Expands the upper arch in order to gain space for alignment of crowded teeth

Used to correct a crossbite in the back teeth

Lower expansion can also be used to increase space.

Overjet Correction

Elastics are used for less severe overjet correction and requires patient cooperation.

Carriere Distalizer is used in moderate cases to move the upper teeth back.

Herbst appliance is used in more severe cases to position the lower jaw forward. It is left in for a year while the lower jaw grows into its correct position.

Invisalign

Clear alternative to braces

Treatment time is usually less than traditional braces

No dietary restrictions

No broken brackets or poking wires

More comfortable than braces

Our office is an Elite Provider of Invisalignand is Invisalign Teen certified

Retainers Retainers are placed when you have

completed your orthodontic treatment.

Removable retainers are typically worn at night

Fixed or bonded permanent retainers are placed on most patients for long-term stability.

We are committedto providing our patients with the highest quality orthodontic care

delivered in a friendly and professional manner.

What makes us unique ?

Our practice is known for clinical excellence. We have treated many children of local dentists and also many dentists themselves.

Dr. Cordoba sees each patient at every appointment

We know most people want to have treatment only once. Therefore the final treatment outcome takes into consideration long term stability for a long lasting result. We also place permanent retainers as needed to hold the alignment.

Many offices do not treat 12 year molars. We view these as just as important as any other tooth and align them as necessary.

Please do not hesitate to ask any

questions. We thank you for the

opportunity to be a part of your orthodontic experience.

And look forward to you becoming a

part of our orthodontic family!
