Corel was founded on the promise of CorelDRAW. A small development team building desktop publishing solutions realized that there should be abetter way to create graphics using a computer. Within a few short years, the startlingly original CorelDRAW application became hugely popular,setting a new standard for graphics software. Now, our portfolio also includes world-class software titles including WordPerfect Office, Painter,DESIGNER and Paint Shop Pro, just to name a few.

1985 – Corel is founded. Building desktoppublishing systems, early text effects toolsinspire developers to consider the ambitioustask of building an easy-to-use, full featuredgraphics application for the PC.
1987 – The official beginning of CorelDRAW.Code-named “WALDO” (represented by theattractive guy above), CorelDRAWdevelopment is started by a small butpassionate team of engineers, laying thefoundation for what would become one ofthe world’s most popular software titles!
1989 – CorelDRAW 1 launches in spring and isabsolutely stunning for its time. Version 1broke new ground for features andfunctionality and took full advantage of all thepower a 286 PC with a 40 MB hard drive and2 MB of RAM could deliver.
1991 – CorelDRAW 2 launches in the fall andcustomers experience effects includingEnvelope, Blend, Extrude, and Perspective inuser-friendly graphics software for the veryfirst time. Copied by virtually every othergraphics application on the market,CorelDRAW delivers these essential toolsfirst, and challenges what customers canexpect from their graphics software!
1992 – Corel once again re-defines ‘value’ inthe software industry. Combining illustration,photo-editing, and more in one package,CorelDRAW 3 is the world’s first full-featuredgraphics suite.
1995 – Blazing a trail, CorelDRAW 6is the first graphics suite built forWindows 95 and 32-bit power.
1996 – Corel Acquires WordPerfect,Quattro Pro, Paradox, and thePerfectOffice application suite fromNovell. New WordPerfect 7 debutslater that year.
2000 – Corel adds Painter, KPT andKnockOut to its graphics family. Built forboth the Mac and PC, these best-of-breedapplications from MetaCreations help secureCorel’s place as a creative powerhouse!
2001 – Corel brings Micrografx Designer intoits product portfolio. From small businessesto enterprise customers, graphics pros totechnical illustrators, Corel now has anoffering for virtually any PC graphicssoftware user.
2002 – As part of a major expansion of OEMbundling activities with a variety of majorhardware manufacturers, WordPerfect Officedebuted on Dell PCs in 2002. Reveal codesand publish to PDF make it a favorite!
Spring 2003 – Offering features designed tobring easy XML publishing to the masses,WordPerfect Office 11 introduced two waysto create XML content: a powerfulenterprise-class XML editor, and an easy-to-use “Publish to XML” feature in WordPerfect11 and Presentations 11.
August 2003 – Vector Capital acquiresCorel. Company goes private to build a solidfoundation for future growth by focusing onits core products – including CorelDRAW andWordPerfect.
February 2004 – Corel re-defines thegraphics software landscape withCorelDRAW Graphics Suite 12. With newintelligent tools, customers are now able tocomplete their designs twice as fast asbefore. Built for design professionals andbusiness users, the product has won morethan 40 industry awards.
April 2004 – WordPerfect Office 12 givesan office suite market increasinglyinterested in alternatives to MicrosoftOffice exactly what they need: industry-leading compatibility including aninnovative new "Microsoft Mode". With20 million users worldwide, it's the world'spreferred alternative to Microsoft Office.
October 2004 – Painter IX releases to muchacclaim. Product reviewers and industryexperts hail the latest release as “the bestPainter yet.”
October 2004 – After completing the successfulturnaround of its core businesses, Corel acquires JascSoftware, Inc., makers of the award-winning Paint ShopPro and leaders in digital imaging and photo-editing.The acquisition extends Corel’s capabilities in the rapidlyexpanding digital photography market and sets thestage for the company’s next phase of growth.
February 2005 – Corel launchesCorel DESIGNER Technical Suite 12 – theworld’s most powerful and completetechnical graphics suite offers technicalillustration and professional photo editing.
April 2005 – WordPerfect Office 12 - SmallBusiness Edition is defined by its newapproach to addressing users' needs,adopting an easy-to-use task-orientation.
July 2005 – WordPerfect MAILdebuts. The new WordPerfect MAILjoins the WordPerfect Office productlineup, adding a world-classMicrosoft Outlook alternative tobolster WordPerfect Office's positionas the leading alternative toMicrosoft Office.
July 2005 – Corel welcomes David Dobsonas its new CEO. The company enjoys 7consecutive profitable quarters and growthacross all its core product lines includingCorelDRAW, WordPerfect, and the PaintShop family. Corel proudly enters an excitingnew chapter in its turn around story.
