Football

As football in Gibraltarturns pro a new phe-nomenon is suddenlyemerging which hasseen different reactionsfrom within the footballworld, the new phe-

nomenon is called betting. On a Fridaynight a young east European enters thestadium, casually dressed, friendly inmanner, seats by the area which is forthe VIPs, but which is frequently usedby everyday fans as it has the bestcover from the elements during normalweekly league matches.

A quietly spoken male, who seems toknow some of the managers and play-ers, but whose only focus once thegame starts, is on delivering the datafrom the match. Speaking to him yousoon find out, as he is quite open aboutit that he is the regional representativefor some betting company dealing insport. His main region is the Malagaprovince where he covers events suchas the Spanish basketball league, oreven the Primera Liga. His main tool ishis mobile phone, which he is con-stantly on during the ninety minutes.Ask him anything on the match and he

will know, most of the time his predic-tions of how a match will end seempretty accurate, except when teams putmore than ten past the other whichleaves him a bit speechless. He is butone of the many people now found at-tending first division matches, and thenumbers will soon grow as the bettingindustry recruits, for £50 per match, rep-resentatives willing to sit throughmatches and provide them with timelyupdates, scores and data.

There is nothing illegal about the activ-ity; however, it is a clear indicator of thechanging world football is living. Whilstteams struggle to pay their players, andclubs try to find new sources to fundtheir attempts to reach the elite status ofbecoming a professional outfit, fromdecades in the amateur sphere, there isan industry which profits from the veryexistence of a "professional" league inGibraltar. Already last year The GibraltarFootball Association took steps to warnand educate teams and associated or-ganisations of the risks faced by Gibral-tar football if it were to ignore thepotential for corruption and the pitfallsfrom not keeping tabs on the unscrupu-lous side of the betting industry. which there has a yet been any reportson, but which as the league continues todevelop and prosper opens up the pos-sibility of attracting unwanted sectors. In comments to the local media lastApril Louis Wink, GFA security and in-tegrity officer warned that Gibraltar is atgrave risk of match fixing, furtheradding "In one year we have seen over€4 million bet on the Gibraltar First Divi-sion and cup matches. It could be abreeding ground for criminals.” At thetime the GFA run community workshopsat the John Mackintosh Hall for localteam players and officials focussing onthe dangers of match fixing. Since thenthe betting industry has continued tofocus its attention on Gibraltar, and re-ceived its own condemnation from somequarters, the latest coming from LynxMarketing & Commercial Director,Jonathan Costa.

Costa, however, a Marketing & Commer-cial Director of one of these clubs tryingto enter that elite status in sports, hashis own views on the betting industry. One which looks at the financial gainsgained by one industry against whatthey give back to the same industry theyare profiting from. In a lengthy messagebroadcast on the Lynx FC website Costacomments that "There are now over 34online gaming companies in Gibraltarbecause of its generous tax environ-ment, as they have benefited from lowercorporation tax, no value added tax onmarketing spend and in some cases ex-emption from gambling duty in the UK –Those who have a UK presence but arebased offshore are required to pay POC(point of consumption tax).

”You would think that having such a fi-nancial benefit in Gibraltar, one would

be inclined in supporting a local sport-ing entity or invest in community pro-grammes even if it's just youthacademies. Unfortunately this has neverbeen the case and on various occa-sions, through the media, such informa-tion has been blocked or removedcompletely from an interview and weask you why?"

Costa claims that Lynx has "encoun-tered many setbacks from the gamingindustry when approaching them forsponsorship" pointing out that "theyfocus on international top platforms andpremium rights packages – such as thepartnerships with top teams in Europethat gain coverage and visibility on aPan-European level" and that "Subjectto any changes to the current strategy, they do not support alternative re-quests, neither on national nor on inter-national levels."

Costa questions why the industry turnsdown local clubs requesting for spon-sorship deals when he alleges it "reapsthe benefits on our home ground andgenerate over £2.5 million worth of betswhich involved Football clubs in Gibral-tar". “It is mind boggling," he adds,"how we have not seen a single pennyinvested towards Local sponsorship ofa sporting entity in Gibraltar but also beremoved our rights of expression whenhighlighting our disappointment throughthe local media. Is the government tak-ing sides in making sure we do notupset the Gaming industry with thetruth? What we will say is this; for aslong as we have the right to express ourdiscontent, we will continue to do sountil we feel fit and there is no stoppingus."

Since entering UEFA Gibraltar’s football hasseen greater interest from the internationalmedia and sports industry.

Lincoln’s campaign in Europe, where theyreached the second round further increasedGibraltar’s presence within the Europeanscene. Gibraltar’s own qualifiers against Ger-many, Poland and the Republic of Ireland, among others propelled Gibraltar further to theforefront. This is believed to have further in-creased the interest in Gibraltar football espe-cially amon betting companies based outsideGIbraltar, som eof which are based in easternEuropean states where the regulations are farless stringent.

If Gibraltar's sportingfraternity had not yetreceived enoughendorsement in thepast week over itsfacilities andenthusiasm for sport,

the Commonwealth GamesAssociation ensured it addedits voice to highlightGibraltar's potential futurewith sport.

Already the EuropeanAthletics had called onGibraltar to look at thepossibility of hosting youthand junior games. With theIsland Games alreadyallocated to Gibraltar,

Hockey hosting EuropeanChallenge championshipmatches in May, and Netballhosting this years under 17International tournament thecall from TheCommonwealth Associationfor Gibraltar to bid for the2023 youth games couldonly add to the value ofGibraltar's bid towardsSports tourism orientedmarkets.

Louise Martin, President ofthe Commonwealth GamesFederation (CGF) during thevisit to Gibraltar last weekclaimed they would bestrong contenders if they

decided to put themselvesforward.

Just days before theGibraltar CommonwealthGames Associationpresident had highlightedthat although Gibraltar hadnot bid for the 2021Commonwealth YouthGames expected to beawarded to Northern Ireland,if the latter pulled out itwould put its name forwardfor it. Speaking toCoresportgib, he hadindicated that it was unlikelythat Northern Ireland wouldpull out, but was ensuringthat Gibraltar's intentions

Gibraltar should bidfor 2023 youth games

were known. He alsocommented that as yet theassociation had notofficially considered the2023 Youth Games, although it was in hissights, purely because itwas so far away that herequired to ensure that thefacilities andinfrastructure, includingthe required support fromthe authorities existed bythen.

With Gibraltar already dueto host the Small IslandGames in 2019 which isexpected to bring togetherover 3,000 athletes from 24

countires with 12 sports, the Commonwealth YouthGames would involve alesser number with only1,000 athletes from 71countries and territoriestaking part in up to ninesports. Something whichhas made the CGF look atGibraltar with in a positiveway as a potential bidder.

Speaking toInsidethegames.biz CGFPresident Louis Martinsaid "The 2019 IslandGames could beGibraltar's test event."

The Commonwealth

Games Association had afirst hand look atGibraltar's facilities lastweek when a meeting heldin Gibraltar broughttogether senior officialsincluding Regional VicePresidents from acrossthe Commonwealth withadditional participantsvisiting for relatingcommittees such as theSports and Developmentscommittees.

With sports facilities dueto be upgraded in line withthe requirements for the2019 Small Island Games, and new training pitches,

This week aselection ofyoung ladies, allof school agewill have

completed a week oftraining under thewatchful eye of Scottishcoaches. This is just thelatest of the extensivetraining regime theseyoung ladies will havegone through sinceSeptember in a bid tomake Gibraltar proud inMarch.

Since early in September, and with little publicity, the Gibraltar Under 17

national squad hasundergone an extensive, three day a week physicaland mental preparation asthey prepare of the MarchUnder 17 Europeantournament to be held inGibraltar.

CoreSportGib was invitedto one of their manysession. The seeminglyyoung shy girls, verymuch teenagers when offcourt side, demonstratedtheir discipline, determination andenthusiasm for the sportas they were guidedthrough the tough, well

planned training regime.Four coaches watchedfrom the side-lines, andthere was little they had tosay in the first twentyminutes as the youngladies lined up to warmup.Following the lead fromthe leaders within theirown ranks, the girlsfollowed a sequence oftraining and warm uproutines which very muchexemplified the instilleddiscipline which onewould expect from anational squad.

timed, sequence of exercises, saw the manyfacets of the game required being practisedthroughout. This was not just a warm up, itwas a routine which showed that the youngladies were acting as a team. Mistakeswould be corrected from within their ownranks, encouragement would come fromwithin their own ranks, guidance wouldcome from within their own ranks. Thecoaches watched closely and only in therare occasions that required them givingadvise would they interrupt.

Five months of intensive training hadbrought the team together as one, and theeffects were clear to see at theTercentenary.

Thos who had had the privilege to watchfrom the sidelines commented, "I have seen

national teams, and most other sports, butnetball seems to have it right. This isprobably the best organised, best disciplinedteam I have seen in many years." Thedescription was echoed not by just the one,but by quite a large number of people whofrequent the tercentenary sports hall andhave seen the team training.

In March the young ladies will come upagainst Malta, Republic of Ireland andSwitzerland in the Challenge section of theNetball Europe 17 Championships, whichwill be held between the 4th and 6th Marchat the Tercentenary Sports Hall.

The hosts, Gibraltar, will be defending theirtitle, won in Malta in the last Championships, and are going to prove that it was not just aone off.

Hockey

The Spanishban onGibraltarian playersplayinghockey inSpain has

been lifted, not that it wasactually enacted uponanyway. The news cameas no surprise to many inthe hockey world who hadseen this type of actionhappen before, only to seeSpanish policy turn aroundlater as the sporting worldunited to challenge thepolicies.

Most importantly, no oneperson can take credit forthe turn-around, if therewas any. Yet there is muchto be content with. Littlepolitics was involved, fewpolitical manifestationswere made, and thesituation was resolved bysports not politics.

As Coresportgib reportedlast week, Spanish clubsand organisations directlyaffected by the warningsissued by the Spanishhockey federation made

their own representationschallenging the policy andasking for clarification. Twoclubs, in particular, wishedto know why the warningshad been issued when thefederation itself hadaccepted the registration ofGibraltarian players intotheir teams. This evidentby the mere fact that theRFEH itself had listedamong the San FernandoCH team playersGibraltarian GarethHenwood as part of theofficial registered teamplayers.

By Thursday night thesituation had been clarifiedand confirmation had comefrom the RFEH that anyplayer from Gibraltar couldplay in Spain, and thatfriendly matches betweenSpanish teams andGibraltar teams could takeplace as was firstbroadcasted exclusively byCoreSportGib through itsCore Photography newsblog.

On Saturday the GibraltarHockey Associationconfirmed that the lifting of

the ban was official. Aspokesman for theAssociation posted inFacebook, "The GHA ispleased to announce thatthe ban imposed by theConsejo superior deDeportes on SpanishClubs competing againstGibraltarian clubs has nowbeen lifted. This wasconfirmed yesterday by theSecretary of the RFEH inwriting to our President. We now look forward tocontinuing what has beena long established sportingfriendship."

who are theveterans?

The Gibraltar Veterans (35years +) is an integral sectionof the GRFU. A number of theplayers still regularly play fortheir clubs in the Super4sleague and have had Interna-tional experience with the Na-tional team. The Vets playersare often leading the way inpassing on their experience toyoung players stepping up toadult rugby. Obviously at thistime in a players career itsabout as having as much funoff the pitch as it is on it. Thisis a representative side ofGibraltar and the team is thebest XV above the age of 35years that the Rock has tooffer.

The last two games were bothhigh scoring matches with theSovereign Insurance RockScorpions beating an understrength Nature Group EuropaStormers by 66 points to 10. Itwas a fast flowing game with atotal of 12 tries, with bothteams cancelling each otherout in the first 20 minutes, before the Scorpions tookcontrol and romped home, theworthy winners.

Remarkably, the other game, between the Kedhlow GibraltarBay Buccaneers and theInLine Framing Straits Sharks, also consisted of 12 tries, butit was a much more evencontest. Right up until 10minutes from the end it wasneck and neck, at 25 all, beforethe Sharks broke the deadlockrunning in three unansweredtries to win the game 42 pointsto 25.

The Scorpions won the Cuplast season, their first piece ofsilverware, and have been thedominant team this season, having won six of their sevengames. They now have anunassailable lead in the league

and will be crownedchampions at the last leaguegame of the season on 18thFebruary. As an indication ofthe competitiveness of theleague, however, all Clubshave now been crownedChampions at least once in thelast six years, and last year’swinners, the Buccaneers, arecurrently trailing in last place.

The Cup competition beginson 3rd March, with the final onthe 17th of the same month, and it will be interesting to seeif the Scorpions can win thedouble.

All the games this seasonhave been played at VictoriaStadium, which has been greatfor Gibraltar Rugby, meaningthat the games have beenopen to spectators, and properposts have been in place forconversions and penalties.Due to the Representativegame against Jersey on 6thFebruary, we have postponedRound 8 of the League to 11thFebruary, and this game willnow be played at the DevilsTower Camp (DTC).

Street Football

The Street Soccer Leaguestarted off with the firstWinter SSL Cup, but notwithout its first teething

problems. Initially the matcheswere to be played at Mid Harbours, but this came to a quick stop whenthe organisers were informed thata paid for league or tournamentcould not take place at the estatewithout asking for permission andpayment of arranged fees.

This led to a change of locationwith the GSLA providing alloca-tions at the small concrete pitches, where allocation fees were en-forced.

A total of seven teams registeredfor the warm up tournament.Few rules, no need for proper kits, and normal football rules applied, all of which resembled very muchthe GFA Futsal leagues.

The mini tournament took off onSaturday with seven teams com-peting across two of the smallpitches.

The matches saw all levels of foot-ball on the pitches. The skilled, thenot so skilled, the healthy and fit,the I am here for a day's kick aboutand even the pros playing to honetheir skills on a different arena.

The street soccer phenomenonhas attracted some interestamong those who wish to play butcannot register their interest asthey just want to be involved, notcommitted to the training andother commitments teams underthe GFA now experience.

As the first Street Soccer Leaguetournament took place at the Bay-side Sports complex, just acrossthe yard, in the old Victoria Sta-dium sports hall teams battled itout in the third and fourth divisionof the futsal league, many of theplayers home grown, young andold, and all playing in their sparetime.

Just next door the first division ofthe futsal league also took place.Seeing all three together StreetSoccer resembled the poor man'sequivalent, and not necessarilyhaving the effect which peoplehad envisioned from the marketedproduct, but very much providingan opportunity to players from alllevels, and skills who miss out onthe regulation registration of theorganised GFA seasons.

FC Magpies were crowned cham-pions of the 5-a-side Winter StreetSoccer League Cup after defeat-ing FC Renegades 6 - 4 in the finalmatch of the tournament

Just twenty minutes beforethe start of Saturday's roundof Futsal first divisionmatches, in which Pheonixfaced Lincoln, the league or-ganisers received a not toosurprising call that Lincolncould not field a full team.

This was the third consecu-tive time in which Lincolnhad failed to field a team, forfeiting the points and nowfacing possible sanctionsfrom the league.

Lincoln who on Saturdayonly had five registered play-ers under their name, afterlosing a number of players in

January had until Monday tofind new players before risk-ing further non-appearances.The Futsal league will nowhave to look at the possibilityof imposing sanctions in ac-cordance to the regulationsin which any team forfeitingthree matches are liable toexpulsion.

As one official pointed out,not only do we have peoplepreparing the pitches in timefor the matches, we haveteams arriving only to be toldthere is no match, and offi-cials turning up to officiate amatch who need to get paidbut there is no match. It is an

actual waste of time, moneyand resources."

Lincoln's possible expulsionwould have a direct impacton the league with a deci-sion required to be made onmatches played and read-justments made in relation topoints and goal differencesalready registered.

Lions also face a similar fateafter not fielding a team thisweekend, this not being thefirst time they have forfeitedpoints.

prise as the team rode highattracting attention frommany quarters in the footballsector.

The transfere window sawhow at least four of theirplayers, to Coresportsgib’sknowledge, moved onto 11aside teams, in at least onecase, already having been inan eleven aside side andmoving on to another side.

This in at least two casesmeant that their future in fut-sal was questioned ascoaches asked for the play-ers to focus on one leagueor another.

The cross over between fut-sal and the 11 aside meansthat many other players riskthe same fate in the futureas teamsask for theto commit toone gameor another. This mainlydue to thehigh stakesnow experi-enced asteams bidfor financial,as well asfootball success.

The very nature of the corss

over between leagues alsomeans that players repre-sent different clubs whenplaying futsal as opposed to

eleven asidefootball. Some-thing which hasraised someeyebrowsamong neutralswho questionhow playerscan maintainloyalty forclubs, espe-cially in a dayand age where

football is geared just asmuch towards business as itis the sport.

This week thegossip in thestands hasbeen verysamba drivenas news of

Britiannia's loss of itsBrazilian trio challenged fortop talking point rumoursthat Angels could seeBrazilian investors move inwith their own Brazilianplayers in toe.

Following theresounding hammeringreceived at the hands ofLincoln, and with some oftheir best players, and theirmanager going Angels fatewas very much on a tight-rope.

News soon emergedfrom sources close toAngels that a Brazilian

investor had been in talkswith the club, and that hisintentions were to bringwith him at least five newplayers, all of themBrazilian. One was believedto be linked to St Joseph, another to Britannia andthe others nobody yetknew.

As the news broke outBritannia made their ownannouncement, JamesWatson Britannia Presidentstating on Facebook, "It iswith regret that weannounce the departure ofour 3 Brazilians, AlanArruda, Andre Dos Santosand Renan Bernardes. For12 months they havegraced us with theirpresence, and will leave anincredible mark on anyone

who met them."Watson praised the

three players in a lengthystatement, what he was notto know was that just fortyeight hours later, acoachless, Brazilian -lessBritannia showed littlesigns of their old self. A tengoal hammering at thehands of Europa saw howthe team missed theirBrazilian players andcoach.

Yet its now what arethe prospects of Angels? Will Brazilian blood injectnew hope?

What became very realthroughout the week, asnew players entered thefootball scene, is howGibraltar has become anew entry point into

Europe's football market.Players from Africa, SouthAmerica, and other farflung places, even Koreahave sought to enter ourleague. Some successfully, others not with the samesuccess. Their entry intoEurope allowing them thefirst foothold towards theirdreamed riches in Europe, for some, for others arescue package to ensurethey do not have to returnhome. For the clubs takingthem on, a hope ofsuccess, not in the league, but in the cup, which isnow where the money is asLincoln stroll off with thetitle.

As one manager said"its maybe time to learnfrom past mistakes, not

everything that is claimedby players wishing to cometo Gibraltar is necessarilytrue. It is time we did learnto ensure we ignore theCV's and look at thefootball. Too many peoplewant to come to Gibraltarand play in Gibraltar. Andthey just ain't goodenough."

However, as a formerfirst division coach pointedout to Coresportgib, theproblem with Gibraltar isthat even if we tried todevelop our local playerswe would still haveproblems with attitudes. You get a team like Europaand their players get paid, and they play for that wage. Many of them know if theydon't get that wage they are

unemployed, so they willplay for it. Here in Gibraltarmost local players haveother jobs, and better paidjobs than what footballcould give them. Whilstthey might dream offootball, their hearts are notin it as much as thoseothers coming fromoutside Gibraltar. Theirlivelihoods are not at stakeand it is not their priority, and unfortunately that isthe reality today. Which iswhy we must start atlooking at how we muststart from the grassrootsand provide those jobs forthe younger ones to wantto keep and dedicatethemselves to the football."

With the first match of thefirst division cancelledCoresportgib had achance to opt to cover alower division match.

The much forgotten matches at the oldVictoria Stadium sports hall had all themakings of an exciting atmosphere.

X faced Y, we soon find out that theywere Rock 54 FC (Young Trends) andLaguna 55 FC sponsored by Worktop.

With just five minutes of the first half togo the score had been levelled to 2-2.Both teams excelled in determination andgrit. Where the football skills lacked, in

comparison to the first division, theenthusiasm and passion to win was nolesser, if anything it seemed intense.

Hard tackles, straight talking, pushing, shoving, pressing and competitivenesswere in abundance. The second half saw the young Trendstake the lead to 3-2.

Soon after, absorbing the pressure theylaunched an attack with a quick string ofpasses that ended in the 4-2 beingslotted in.

The young guns aggressive tackling wasat one stage reprimanded by their owncoach as the match continued with some

Futsal lower division excitement

very tough tackling from the youngTrends.

The match slowed down a tad to thebenefit of Worktop who hit the post oncebut we're not able to score.

The fifth came from a well passedthrough ball down the centre, nudgedpast the side of the Keeper for the 5-2.Worktop could have reduced thedifference when "Danny", at least that ishow they called him, broke through butnarrowly missed the target.

Eventually they put the ball in the netfrom a back header that caught thekeeper out of position.

A chaotic clearance where the ball endsin a rebounds at the feet of a youngTrend forward whose shot is thendeflected into goal brought the differenceback to three for the 6-3.

Rock 54 taking the three points with a 6-2victory. We later found out that is was asecond a against a fourth placed matchfrom the third division, truthfullysomething we could have easily haveknown beforehand had we planned tocover the third division rather than thefirst division matches. The Lincoln non-appearance allowing us the time to take apeek at other divisions.

Glacis forfeit three important points by not turning upThe futsal league went into disarray this weekend when three teams were unable tofield teams for their first division matches.

Significantly Glacis United, who have recently dropped points at the top of the tablewere among the teams that were involved in walkovers, gibing all three points torivals Lynx after they did not have full team available to field.

St Joseph's also benefitted from a walkover after Lions had a similar fate. The Lionsteam who have faced constant problems throughout the season are among the teamswhich could face expulsion from the league for not fielding a team on more than threeoccasions.Lincoln, who are also among the top four, like Glacis also dropped points not havingenough players registered following the departure of most of their squad during thetransfer period.

Cannon and Manchester split the spoilsTwo bottom clubs fighting it to the bitter end, with neither taking all the points, thatwas the way the Cannon v Manchester encountered ended on a day that Futsal sawmany of its top teams not actually making an appearance.

Cannon opened the score on the 9th minute. This was followed by an equaliser fromOchello with set the tone for the rest of the match as both teams went into half timeon equal terms.

The second half started with immediate action as Torremocha put Cannon ahead, only to see the match levelled immediately. Torremocha went out to put Cannonahead again, and once again Manchester, through Asquez equalised, making it threeall. Just as quickly De Los Santos stepped forward with two of his own forManchester 62 putting them in the lead. It was not until the last minute of the matchthat Cannon got a goal back to bring the two to level terms. The match ending in afive all thriller.

College get stung by ScorpionsScorpions, whose season has seen them battling in mid table were emphatic winnersin their match against College 1975.

Going into half time with just a 3-0 scoreline in their favour, Scorpions stung Collegein the second half with another six goals before they even replied with their own.College's goal just adding to their misery as Scorpions responded with a further threeto make it 12-1.

It was a match Europa could ill afford to losepoints on, and in which Britannia entered with-out their Brazilian trio.

Coach less and lacking the pace that saw Bri-tannia terrify some of the top defences, this wasa toothless team very much without guidanceon the field.

A tentative start by Europa, who were out tocontrol the game and ensure they capturedearly on and safeguarded the points soon sawthem scoring their first through Belfortti. The onslaught had begun, luckily for BritanniaEuropa lacked pace and movement in the firsthalf. Javi the only real option in relation to paceacross the field seemed like a lonely figure attime trying to get the ball into danger areas.

It was Javi who provided the second. Javi stolethe ball, and saw his shot blocked by the face ofa Britannia defender. A shambolic attempt toclear by Britannia led to the ball slotted in for the2-0 by Padal.

As defenders Britannia defenders squabbledamong each other, Europa exposed Britannia'sdefence breaking through gaps left open by thehigh front defensive line. The coachless Britan-nia seemed to ignore any guidance from thetouchline, as they interim coach bellowed in-structions, most to be rebuked or ignored. Thesquabbling defenders conceded the third whenthey were unable to clear a missed headeracross goal which left the back open for thethird, and his first, from Joselhino.

The second half started much the same but itwas Britannia who opened the scoring with athunderous volley from outside the area to thetop corner from Roche for what can only be de-scribed as the goal of the season. The youngman became an instant five minute hero havingjust stepped onto the field at half time in placeof Graham.

The goal set Europa alive instead of Britannia.

Joselinho suddenly spark to action with abreak to goal forcing the keeper to a foulconceding a penalty, and just a yellowcard. The penalty was easily slotted intothe back of the net for the fourth by Padal.Joselihino once again broke through mo-ments later to put number five past Barnfa-ther.

Britannia's defence was in total disarray, and without their options to run at Europa, having lost their main runners when theBrazilians left, Britannia seemed like ateam crumbling before the very eyes of thesmall crowd.Josephine, freely weaved between theBritannia defence and became a thorn tothem, posing constant problems, butseemingly going unmarked throughout histime on the field.

Pinned back, Britannia conceded a penaltyfrom a corner as they attempted to clearthe ball with a high kick bring a Europaplayer down in the area. Rodriguezstepped forward to take it and slotted itpast the keeper. The match was literally over by then, butjust in case the inspired Joselhino contin-ued to cause chaos upon the Britannia de-fence, his runs forcing numerous saves, his persistent free moving game, stealingballs deep inside Britannia's half as hesought to increase his goal tally.

And surely he did as he finished the gamewith five goals to his name to see Europawin by 10-1.

Britannia who had come into the matchhaving provided up to now a respectableperformance against tougher oppositionwere found lacking across the field. Thedeparture of their Brazilian contingence ,along with the absence of players injuredand suspended leaving them with a meresemblance of their tough fast pace gamewhich teams have come to respect themfor.

First division status wasat stake, in this thefirst clash betweenGlacis United andGibraltar United. Un-like the previous

scheduled match, rained off on the dayof the floods in Gibraltar, it was a glori-ous sunny Sunday.

Even before a ball was kicked thenerves could be felt through the silentwarm up of both teams. Neither couldafford the other to win, although a drawwould have suited Gibraltar Unitedmore than Glacis.

Glacis started with a new keeper underthe posts, and man to man marking onMontovio, even though they had theearly possession. Montovio was soonrattled his short fuse got him an earlyyellow within first five minutes as helunged into an unnecessary tackle.

The first fifteen was a nervy affair withboth teams showing they could reachthe other's end. A push in the Glacispenalty area saw calls for a penalty ig-nored. Something which would beseen often in the next ten minutes as itseemed Glacis received more calls intheir favour.

Gibraltar United settled down fasterinto the game and posed the greaterthreat in the first half hour.

Gibraltar had a couple goodchances with a ball clearedoff the post following a stringof corners conceded byGlacis as they were pushedback into their area.

In their usual counter offen-sive style seen in recentweeks Glacis respondedwith a swift counter followedby a shot at goal blocked fora corner.Gibraltar United's pressurewas maintained into the lat-ter part of the first half. The

threat posed by Montoviowas evident with even theGlacis bench coming intoplay pointing out every sin-gle action of the player to gethim booked again to thelinesman and fourth official.

As the first half got to a closeGlacis won a dubious fouloutside the area when aGibraltar United defenderwas penalised for a tacklewhere it was clear he hadgone for the ball and got to itfirst. Fortunately for Gibraltar

only the seagulls were both-ered by it as the ball wasskied well over the crossbar. Within minutes of the start ofthe second half Gibraltarbroke through with Karl run-ning at the defence fromdeep. As he entered deep in-side the box he was broughtdown for a penalty. Montovioslotted it in putting on thewrong side of the keeper forthe one nil.

defenders back as Gibraltarcountered with long ballsout.

As the tensions increased sodid the tough tackles fromboth sides and the stream ofyellow cards.

Glacis continued to pinGibraltar United back buthad very few clear chancesin goal as the Gib Utd de-fence kept themselves tightat the back. The clearestchance came as Karl once

again broke through forGibraltar. A low driven crosssaw Montovios lunge for theball right in front of goal witha defender right alongside. Itseemed the defender had di-verted it out but a goal kickwas given by the official tothe annoyance of Montoviowho from the groundlaughed at the decision.Gibraltar united were unde-terred from serving outcrunching tackles as theykept Glacis out. With Karl'sdeep runs and Montovio's

presence keeping three menback Glacis options werelimited in numbers.Glacis found it hard to getthrough the tight defence asGibraltar played the sametactics Glacis had used inthe past few weeks againstother teams.

With Chino only forced tomake two or three savesGibraltar took all three pointsensuring their status in thefirst division remains secure.

Manchester62 got agoodsoaking onFridayevening,but not

just literally from the pouringrain that saw the pitch semi-waterlogged. With a depletedsquad from the start, after theysaw some of their players pullout from action due to workcommitments, Manchester wereon the back foot from the start ofthe match against leadersLincoln. The Manchester facingLincoln resembling little of theteam that had scraped a drawthrough their determination andtenacity the previous week.

Playing at a fast pace, andusing both flanks to open upManchester's defence, Lincolnmaintained a near barrage onthe Manchester defence fromthe start of the match. Within thefirst 20 minutes Lincoln wereone up from a strike from the leftside, when Casciaro received across from the right to strike itdeep into the far post. A similarstrike just minutes before sawMacedo make a flying save tokeep the ball out.

Manchester were pinned back intheir half for most of the secondhalf, the only save made byLincoln keeper being a backpass header from his owndefence that nearly went overhis head had he not punched itclear in a flying save.

The second came from amistake from Macedo, who

Just minutes later, and justbefore the stroke of half time,Cabreras broke free down theright to strike the ball hard pastMacedo with a low drive to the far post.

Lincoln had kept the style offootball simple but with greateffect. Missing once again LiamWalker, who is claimed not tohave renewed his contract withLincoln with Europa very muchinterested in the player, Lincolnsmidfield play was a simple openup space tactic and run with theball, than keeping posessionand creative midfield play.

The second half started muchthe same way as it ended. WithManchester with few real optionto turn the game around, aseven JP Duarte was missingfrom the bench due to workcommitments.

With the rain now beginning tofall Manchester problemscontinued as Lincoln did nothesitate for one moment tocontinue the onslaught. Withtheir typical frontline, highpressure tactics attempting tosteal balls up front, and theirdeep cross to the flanks, withquick changes of flank throughlong ball across the dangerareas, it was not long thatManchester's defence soonsuccumbed.

Chipolina, who had been luckynot to be send off for a secondbookable offence at half time, stole the ball in midfield and runwith it across the edge of thepenalty area looking for a gap inManchester's defence. Onfinding it he let loose a lowdrive, which saw a staticMacedo watch it bounce off hispost and into goal.

As Lincoln celebrated theweather came to Manchester'srescue. Unable to stop the runsdown the flank, it was only withthe aid of a sudden downpourwhich left the pitch waterloggedthat Manchester found a way tostop the ball.

The downpour even made theBrazilian contingent, believed tobe the new investors in Angelsand their new players, scurry tocover such was its intensitythrough parts of the match.

As players struggled to keep theball moving, with the waterslowing it down, Manchesterwere able to defend against atiring Lincoln. The mostexcitement during this part ofthe match came when a Lincolnplayer collided with thelinesman, sending himsprawling to the ground on hisback to the amusement of thesmall crowd.

The ninety minute whistle camewith no celebrations, the playersinstead run for the changingrooms to get away from thepouring rain with the smallcrowd scurrying for their cars.

With both teams equal in points andstunned by the new bite of Glacisthis was always going to be a tightjostle for dominant position. Both played for possession of thecentre. Neither maintaining it forlong. The first fifteen minutes saw nothreats to goal.

Neither team yielded control of themidfield with the main battle in thecentre, with no clear chances.

With both teams with newplaymakers it was a matter of whowould get the first break. A difficulttask with both keepers commandingtheir respective areas in first halfhour taking crosses in.

The break came when Lata brokethrough alone beating the defenceand rounding off the keeper scoredthe first for Lions.

Within seconds Lynx called for apenalty when one of their playerswent down in the area. LinesmanWard signalling for a goal kick.

Lions begun to dominate with a shotblocked from reaching the target fora corner.

As first half concluded lionshad a chance to go aheadwith the ball scrambled outfrom the very line.

Lions had the dominantpossession of the match inthe second half reaching goalon several occasions. Robbawas forced to some goodsaves in one stopping on thevery line.

The match was full of intensityas both tried for their secondgoal. Lynx had a call forhandball ignored after the ballseemed to strike the arm of alions defender.

Lions winner came right at theend when Lopez Luquedribbled past two defenderspassing to Lata who crossedthrough where substituteMartin became an instanthero as he drove the ball intothe back of the net for the 2-1.Lynx defender collapsed tothe ground knowing that thatwas the last kick of the match.

Lions, who had been beatenin recent weeks by Glacis, confirmed their position Lynx, placing a three pointdifference between them andstill within reach of Europaalthough a seeminglyimpossible task to evencontemplate going better thatthird place.

The Lionesses might have come out ofthe match knowing they are through tothe Rock Cup final, but not after afrustrating match.

Europa guided by Adrian Holmes, absorbed thefirst 30 minutes of pressure from Lions, whowere missing two of their key players andanother played with a fever.
