COURTHOUSE GALLERYJim Boden and Alison Denyer May 7 - June 10, 2011

Opening Reception: Saturday, May 7th, from 4 - 6 pmAt first glance, Jim Bodenʼs small oil paintings on mylar appear to be beau-tiful expressive studies of the human form. On closer inspection, as the ti-tles reveal, the viewer realizes they are a witness to a crime. This seriesof paintings, “Interrogate”, exposes the horrors of the humanitarian crimeof torture. The distorted figures, the claustrophobic space, and color ofbruised flesh, are a bold, unflinching examination of victims caught in anightmare. He says: “My work has focused on the human figure both as aphysical surface and as a reflective field for the human condition. The fear, anxiety, and pain which we have allowed our government to do in ourname demeans us as a whole.”Alison Denyerʼs images are drawn from her interest in mapping, geogra-phy, and environmental issues. By using materials that create a reflectivesurface, such as graphite on black paper, images change and shift, de-pending on the angled viewed. She says: “Iʼm very interested in the wayin which rivers and bodies of water hold a tremendous physical power, re-sulting in dramatic alterations of the landscape. Additionally, the markmaking capabilities of flowing water on the earthʼs surface as seen fromabove is a long-term fascination of mine… my intention is to not only showthe beauty of the earthʼs surface and the mark making capabilities of waterthrough my own subtle mark making techniques, but also to highlight cur-rent environmental concerns presented by many of the worldʼs major riverdeltas and bodies of water.”Boden and Denyer directly and indirectly examine poignant humanitarianand environmental issues in their work. Bodenʼs painterly hand, andDenyerʼs intricate graphite marks lure us in; revealing more than meetsthe eye, with a great deal of complexity beneath the surface. This exhibition is funded in part by the New York State Council on the Arts,a state agency. The Courthouse Gallery hours during exhibitions are Tues-day through Friday 12 – 5 pm, Saturday 12 – 4 pm, and all other times byappointment. The Courthouse Gallery is located at the side entrance ofthe Old County Courthouse, corner of Canada and Lower Amherst Streets,Lake George, NY.

Dear Jesus,I come to you to ask a favor on this day

Would you please deliver this letterto my mom and dad who have passed away.

Augustine and Anthony Ellis

One year ago on the morning of April 20th and evening of April 27 you left my home and went to heaven.

You left us all so quickly to that mansion in the sky,I am truly thankful I had the chance to say

“I love you” and “Goodbye”!

You both are surely missed by those you left behind,Youʼre pain free now and that gives us all a peace of mind.

You are with each other thatʼs where you wanted to beYouʼll walk hand and hand for all eternity.

Mom and Dad. youʼre happy now this makes me happy too.I pray that one day Iʼll join you

when my work here on Earth is through.

Until this glorious day comes, I know not when it will be.So til then remember that I love you and save a place for me.

Thank you Lord for delivering this letter to my mom and dad sodear and if there is an answer Lord, my heart is open to hear...

Youʼre fondly missed and forever in my heart.Love Always, Dawn Marie

Rare Debussy, World Premiere, Animal Wrangler Featured In Con-cert of French and American Music

Flutist Margaret LaFrance, M.M., and pianist/composer Michael Harrison, assisted by Mary Cobb, flutist and Francelise Dawkins, narrator, will pres-ent a concert of French and American music on Saturday, April 30, 2011at 7:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Saratoga Springs(UUCSS), 624 North Broadway. Tickets, available at the door only, are$10 for the general public and $5 for students. The concert features the world premiere of Harrisonʼs “Sonatina for Fluteand Piano” and LaFranceʼs “Animal Tails,” a collection of works inspiredby the characteristics of different animals and which requires an “animalwrangler” to assist the performers. “It is very exciting that we are perform-ing pieces that will appeal to a broad audience,” said LaFrance, who or-ganized the concert to benefit UUCSS. “People who love Frenchlanguage, people who love animals, and people who simply like a goodclassical concert will enjoy this event,” she said. “There are even a fewsurprises, which Iʼm going to keep secret!” she added. LaFrance who has a B.A. degree from Mount Holyoke College in perform-ance and composition, holds a Masterʼs Degree from Ithaca College influte performance. Harrison received a B.A. in Music Theory from SUNYAlbany and an M.A. in Choral Conducting from the University of Iowa. Healso did doctoral work in Choral Music at the University of Illinois, and hashad his works performed by choirs, chorales and university chorusesacross the country. He is currently the music director of UUCSS. “My piecefor flute and piano is a youthful composition, but this will be the first timeit has ever been performed,” he said. “Itʼs exciting, a world premiere!” headded. The program also includes Claude Debussyʼs “Bilitis,” for flute, piano andnarrator, a rarely performed work that combines Debussyʼs music withevocative poetry by Pierre Louys. Paris-born Dawkins will narrate. (Trans-lations will be provided.) “This is a most beautiful work,” said Dawkins, who owns Feneex Boutique & Gallery on Beekman Street in SaratogaSprings. “The poetry is lovely, and blends delightfully with the music. Iwas thrilled to be asked to perform this piece.” Other composers on theprogram include Aaron Copland, Arthur Foote, Phillipe Gaubert and Fran-cis Poulenc. A reception will follow.
