The Intensive and Coronary Care Unit is a ninebed combined unit which prides itself oncontinuous modernisation and developmentutilising the latest techniques, treatments andequipment to provide the highest possiblestandards of care. The Unit caters for a widerange of medical and surgical conditions, fromAcute Coronary Syndrome to Post OperativeCare following major surgery. We also provideinvasive and non invasive respiratory therapiesand renal support to the critically ill. Thedepartment is operated 24/7 and acceptsemergency admissions.

Clinical NeurophysiologyClinical Neurophysiology is an allied specialty toNeurology. It is primarily an investigativespecialty; using computer, electrical, magneticand electronic means of recording the functionof the brain, spinal cord, spinal roots, peripheralnerves and muscle to diagnose disorders ofthe function of the nervous system.

Tests:Routine Video EEG (Electroencephalogram)Sleep Deprived Video EEGAmbulatory EEGProlonged Video EEGNerve Conduction Studies EMG (Electromyography)Visual Evoked PotentialsSomatosensory Evoked PotentialsAn EEG is a recording of the electrical activityof the brain. During a Routine EEG, the patientwill be asked to attempt to fall asleep. We willalso ask the patient to Hyperventilate for 3

minutes and look at flashing lights.

A Sleep Deprived Video EEG involves thepatient going to sleep 2 hours later and waking2 hours earlier than they usually would (basedon an 8 hour sleep) the night prior to therecording. The patient will be asked to fallasleep for a longer period of time.

An Ambulatory EEG involves the continuousrecording of the electrical activity of the brainfor 24 or 48 hours.

Nerve Conduction studies is a test commonlyused to evaluate the function of the motor andsensory nerves of the human body. The test ismainly used for the evaluation of paresthesiasand/or weakness of the arms and legs.An EMG is a technique used to evaluate andrecord the electrical activity of muscles.

Visual Evoked Potentials (VEP) is a test thatevaluates the function of the visual pathways.

Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SSEP) is atest used to evaluate the function of theconduction pathways from the periphery to thebrain.

The patients are seen on the day of referral.If assessment indicates that a patient shouldbe admitted to the hospital, this will bearranged.
