The Necessity of Death Because I could not stop for Death – He kindly stopped for me – Emily Dickinson personifies death. He kindly stopped for me. How is death kind? As surely as day follows night, the inevitability of death looms over us. Regardless of whether or not we’re able to stop for death, we all have an appointment that will be kept. Death is ironic. On the one hand, no one wants to die. But who truly wants to go on living indefinitely or even forever as we are in the here and now, in this world? Who wants to go on year after year paying taxes (the only other certainty in life), or working at a job, or being retired? Who wants to go on year after year with aches and pains, sickness and disease, traffic jams, things that break, spoiled milk. There are all kinds of good things in life, but we can’t have them without all the rest. But then, who wants to die, either? Soren Kierkegaard said that one striking thing about the human condition is that we’re satisfied with neither of the two alternatives – we don’t want to die, but neither do we want to live forever in this condition. And so it is not the inevitability of death but its necessity we should notice. God allowed humans to die out of His great mercy, as well as for punishment for sin. Once humanity had fallen, natural immortality would be the one utterly hopeless destiny for us. Death was not part of God’s design or His creation. From the beginning it was a possibility, but God never willed it actually to happen. As much as we detest and dread death, God does all the more. Jesus wept at the grave of Lazarus because death, the punishment of sin, is even more horrible in His eyes than in ours. The nature which He had created as God, the nature which He assumed as a Man, lay there before him in its humiliation: a foul smell, food for worms. Jesus wept at the shame. And yet death is necessary. C.S. Lewis said, “On the one hand Death is the triumph of Satan, the punishment for the Fall, and the last enemy. Christ shed tears at the grave of Lazarus and sweated blood in Gethsemane: the Life of Lives that was in Him detested this penal obscenity not less than we do, but more. On the other hand only he who loses his life will save it. We are baptized into the death of Christ, and it is the remedy for the Fall. Death is, in fact, what some modern people call “ambivalent”. It is Satan’s great weapon and also God’s great weapon: it is holy and unholy; our supreme disgrace and our only hope; [Death is] the thing Christ came to conquer and the means by which He conquered.” To conquer death itself, Jesus had to die. The irony swirls around. The only One who had the very principle and source of all life within Himself, who otherwise was capable only of living eternally, died for our sake, so that we would not have to die eternally. And yet Jesus calls our attention to the necessity of death: in order for a seed to bear much fruit, it must fall into the ground and die. And Jesus died. And His death bore much fruit. Without His death, we would be lost. Jesus spoke of His crucifixion as the means by which He would draw all humanity to Him. It is by His death that we are saved.

The Daughters of Notre Dame are currently accepting Easter Memorial’s. A special Memorial Mass will be said on Sunday, April 8, 2018 at the 7:45 a.m. Mass; names will be published in the weekly bulletin. Envelopes for donations are located in the back of the church in the narthex. Donations may be placed in the collection basket or dropped off at the Pastoral Center. Deadline for intentions is Sunday, April 1, 2018.

Please pray for those who have died, and have gone to their eternal rest with the Lord, especially for Deana Lee Ferguson. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace.

Pope Francis calls the church to be permanently in mission. He calls for everyone to be a missionary. We can participate in the mission through prayer.

The lines for the opportunity to see a rock star are indelibly long. The Star of all Stars, Jesus, humbles Himself to share a personal one on one hour, and only a few “wise virgins” fill up their lamps with this wondrous love freely given by Christ. How will He be able to recognize us at the end of our earthly exile if we become as the “foolish virgins’ who are too busy to show love and adoration for this awesome gift that is our Mighty Lord Jesus?

This hour is a great and unrepeated opportunity for a young parent or grandparent to teach their tender lambs our faith and reverence to our most humble Majesty, The Good Shepherd Jesus. Please join us in just one hour of adoration a week out of nearly 124 weekly hours to choose from.

An adorer is needed for:

Wednesday 7:00 a.m.—8:00 a.m. Saturday 10:30 a.m.—11:30 a.m.

Saturday 2:00 a.m.—3:00 a.m.

If you are able to help with this time, please call Veronica Fabro at (830)377-9117.

miercoles 7:00 a.m.—8:00 a.m. sabado 10:30 a.m.—11:30 a.m.

sabado 2:00 a.m.—3:00 a.m.

CHAPEL CLOSURE The Blessed Sacrament will be reposed before the noon Mass on Wdenesday, March 28th, and will be exposed at the usual time on Monday, April 2nd.

Thank you for your generous support of The Catholic Relief Services Collection and for helping Jesus in disguise. Your contributions will make a difference for the poor and marginalized around the world. If you missed the collection, it’s not too late to give! Just visit www.usccb.org/nationalcollections, and click on the “How to Give” link on the left.

Forty Cans for Lent St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry

Lent is upon us, and fasting, prayer and almsgiving are a very important part of this season of the Church. The St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry is always in need of foods to distribute to the needy in our community. This is a wonderful way for all of us to participate in almsgiving and assist our neighbors. Here are some suggestions:

Beans/Dry & canned Pasta/Dry & canned Canned vegetables Rice/All types Soup/Dry & canned Canned meats

While the Pantry usually has a good supply of canned corn and green beans, more is always appreciated. One item of food each day of LentZA small sacrifice with a huge yield! Collection boxes will be located in the Narthex during the Lenten season.

BOOKS TO BORROW

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In this column on March 4, there was a disgraceful misprint in the copy submitted for the bulletin for Marion Worthington’s review of A Short Primer for Unsettled Laymen, by Hans Urs von Balthasar, translated by Michael Wildstein. The correct text for the next-to-last paragraph is: This translation is a gift also;

careful juxtaposition of the English words “cheering, not sneering” are a delight referring to the treatment of priests by the laity while pointing out that neither is entirely appropriate.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Another of Fr. Rolheiser’s “top 10 books for 2017” is At the Existentialist Café: Freedom, Being, and Apricot Cocktails, by Sarah Blackwell. Fr. Rolheiser said, “This is one of the best books written on Existentialism that’s accessible to a non-professional reader. It will introduce you to the giants of Existential philosophy: Sartre, Heidegger, Simon de Beauvoir, Merleau-Ponty, Camus, Husserl, and Jaspers. Bakewell believes you will understand a thinker’s philosophy much more accurately if you also have a picture of his or her life: ‘Ideas are interesting, but people are vastly more so.’ Those without a background in philosophy will get lost occasionally but if you continue reading you will soon find yourselves again fascinated by the lives of these famous, colorful thinkers.”

Knights of Columbus Father Kemper Council 6409 is actively recruiting. If you are a Catholic man 18 years of age or older and are interested in joining the Knights, simply call Stuart Walker, Membership Chairman at 830-998-2698 or Grand Knight Fernando Gutierrez at 830-343-9200 or click the “WANT TO JOIN OR GET INFO?” button on our website at WWW.KOFC6409.ORG.
