He Emptied Himself – Part 2

Jesus often taught in imperatives, telling His listener to do something. St. Paul has an imperative for us in his letter to the Philippians. And any imperative from St. Paul is certainly ultimately from the Lord Himself. In the Acts of the Apostles, Jesus says to Ananias “Go, for he (Paul) is a chosen instrument of mine . . .” Paul says “have this mind among yourselves, which was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross.” Have the mind of Christ in you, which is a mind of humility. Paul also says, “do nothing from selfishness or conceit, but in humility count others better than yourselves.” He means to put others first. It seems natural for us, in our fallen condition, to be self-oriented, self-interested, and self-directed. We like to think of ourselves as autonomous, self-made individuals with inalienable rights. We’re prepared to go to the mat if we feel any of that is threatened. But these are the things that Jesus of which emptied Himself. To put others before the self, is the mind of Christ. It’s hard enough for mere mortals to do that. Now think of what it means for the Son of God, who knew equality with God, to empty Himself of all self-interest, and even His own Godliness. Jesus gave up what was rightly His in order to become one of us to save us. The magnitude of how much He loves us, and what He did for us cannot be measured. But humility also means facing or accepting the truth about ourselves. For us that means facing the truth that we are sinners, and while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us and that we are loved by Him more than we know. For Jesus, the truth about Himself is that He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. And those who follow Him rejoice at His coming and praise His Holy Name and shout ‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!” Only a truly humble man could rightly accept such praise from His followers without letting it inflate His ego. Only the humblest of all men could so deny Himself and be obedient even to the death. And it is certain death, which Jesus ultimately rides toward as He enters Jerusalem amidst the adoring shouts of praise and the waving of the palms. What was on His mind as He began His final week on earth? It was to count others before Himself, to do the will of His Father and not His own will. That is the mind of Christ. Have this mind among yourselves, which was in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Pope Francis calls the church to be permanently in mission. He calls for everyone to be a missionary. We can participate in the mission through prayer; an hour of adoration. This hour is a great and unrepeated opportunity for a young parent or grandparent to teach their tender lambs our faith and reverence to our most humble Majesty, The Good Shepherd Jesus. Please join us in just one hour of adoration a week out of nearly 124 weekly hours to choose from. An adorer is needed for:

Friday 12:00 midnight—1:00 a.m.

If you are able to help with this time, please call Veronica Fabro at (830)377-9117.

viernes 12:00 media noche—1:00 a.m.

BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the

narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. Deborah Harris

tells us about The First Day of Eternity –Resurrection Now,

by George A. Mahoney, S.J.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the central reality and

decisive event of Christian faith and life. The resurrection faith

calls for daily choices in the light of this mystery. The doctrine

that makes Christianity the most unique religion in man’s

history is the resurrection - see 1 Cor 15:20-22. Mahoney

explains as death out of love for us brought Jesus’ resurrection,

so the Christian life is the same; we must die to sin in order to

live in the newness of life. Jesus who is the resurrection is the

Way, the Truth and the Life. He is the bread of life, come into

our world to bring us life and whoever believes in Him will

have eternal life.

Eight chapters explore the subject: 1-God Calls His People:

God promises to meet and invite us into a friendship so He can

share His very own life with us and be made holy by the Spirit

and obedient to Jesus Christ. 2-New Time and New Space:

Our bodily death will end in at a certain time and space and the

glorious coming of Christ will lead us into eternal life that will

never be subjected to corruption and death. 3-A Light That

Shines in the Darkness: J esus conquered death and

suffering; he can free us from sin and death. The brokenness

and suffering that we find in our daily lives can be turned from

death-dealing to life-giving opportunities where we can share in

the resurrection of Jesus. 4-Death Is Resurrection: You and I

will certainly die and pass over into a new existence in a form

that is different from the one we live in now. Jesus’ victory

over death conquers our hearts, helping us to surrender to Him

as Lord of our lives, guiding us in our thoughts, words, and

actions. 5-The Risen Lord and the Eucharist: J esus Chr ist

exists in the Eucharist as one who not only died for us but as

one who has been raised up by the Father through the power of

the Holy Spirit. He can now communicate to us a share in His

death and resurrection. 6-The Spirit of the Risen Jesus: The

author states “that Jesus risen is able in His Body, the church,

to share with us His full outpouring of the Spirit and to share

with us even now, as we live our lives in Him, the one and only

resurrection. Christ and we form one Body by the one Spirit of

love”. The light of the Spirit leads us out of all darkness and

illusion. 7-Resurrection and Ascension: J esus really did die,

rise, and ascend into glory to the heavenly Father. The mystery

of the ascension tells us that Jesus promised never to leave us.

Even in our broken and sinful humanity, we are still part of

God’s family. 8-Today is the Last Day: Mahoney points out,

“as Christians, we must put our whole life in faithful and loving

obedience to God. We have the responsibility to say ‘yes’ to

God in sharing His life with us. In the resurrection, God shares

with us through His Son, a sharing in the Trinity through His

resurrectional Spirit”.

God is asking each one of us to work to build the

Body of His Son to its fullness. We know that Christ will come

at the end of time to transform the universe by bringing it to its

completion in and through Himself. The Good News is that

Jesus Christ is already here, bringing about the Kingdom of

God in our lives and through us, bringing it about in the entire

world.

What: Catholic Kidz Camp

When: June 10-14

Where: Notre Dame Gym

Time: 8:00-12:00

Kids will check-in with St. Catherine, pick-up their flight plan and meet their very own

Guardian Angel! They will encounter exciting characters from the Bible whose lives

were transformed by the angels. Who knows? They may meet Mary, the Queen of

Angels on the way! Kids will have a soaring good time!

Parachute with the Angels and St. Catherine Labouré Catholic Kidz Camp is divided

into four age-specific programs. The creative grade-appropriate lessons are based on

Sacred Scripture and Catholic Tradition and the Doctors of the Church. Each day, after

the Welcome & Prayer, fun lessons begin and explain the various roles angels play in our

salvation. These lessons are engaging and promote active participation. Each day

children will listen to the story of Saint Catherine Labouré because Catherine was led by

an angel to meet Mary, the Queen of Angels. After listening to a specific section of the

storybook which complements the daily lesson, children will participate in a variety of

drama skits, role-play, games and Bible verse memory activities. Sensational, easy-to-

make crafts reflect each day's theme. Songs from the Angel of God Music CD are

upbeat, lively and the lyrics enrich the overall program.

WHAT A HUGE SUCCESS! A BIG THANK YOU To all who helped with our First Eucharist workshop on April 13th. We could not have done it without you: from those that bought the food to those who prepared & served it, to the cleaning crew and all of our team leaders & their assistants.

Un Gran “¡Muchísimas Gracias!”
