Fire destroys Glen Walter area home, no injuriesCORNWALL, Ont. – A South Glengarry family

safely escaped a fire in their Glen Walter home last Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters responded at around noon to a structure fire in a small subdivision at a Page Drive residence.

The flames were eventually extinguished but the home of Danny and Brenda Brunet burned to the ground.

“There were no injuries, and all pets were removed safely from the property,” South Glengarry Acting Fire Chief Dave Robertson told Seaway News. “The homeowner and other occupants had self-evacuted prior to our arrival.”

Robertson said 40 South Glengarry fire-fighters arrived at the scene, on the south-west corner of Lana Drive and Page Drive, representing all four of the township’s fire sta-tions: Glen Walter (1), Martintown (2), Williamstown (3), Lancaster (4).

But fire crews were still grappling with the fact that there are no fire hydrants in the neighbourhood, so water was trucked in to douse the flames.

“They have multiple trucks shuttling water,” said Junior Lalonde, one of dozens of people who congregated around the scene this afternoon. “The owner is outside, and seems very discouraged.”

Smoke from the fire could be seen all the way in Cornwall.

“Within 10 minutes of our arrival, the home was fully engulfed in flames,” said Robertson.

Firefighters are expected to remain at the scene until 6 p.m. The South Glengarry Fire Service is determining the cause of the fire. No foul play is suspected.

“We’re using an excavator to pull material to the side to ensure they’re properly extinguished.”

Neighbours from across the street rep-dorted smelling smoke at around noon.

“The whole house went up, and it’s all he has,” said a witness at the scene. “Fortunately, they got out safe. They were able to move the trucks, too.”

The witness said it took about 15 minutes for fire trucks to arrive to the one-and-a-half

storey home with a detached garage.“The family has been displaced,” said

Robertson. “I’m not sure what arrangements they have for this evening, but we’ll assist in

any way that we can.”An online fundraiser has been setup.

Donations can be made at gofundme.com/22nd4rc3.

City finance manager promoted to new role as CAOTOdd [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ontario - City hall announced last week a familiar face will be taking over as chief administrator.

Maureen Adams, the longtime finance manager with the City of Cornwall, was named city CAO follow-ing a lengthy selection process.

Adams will succeed Norm Levac, who is set to retire at the end of this month.

She assumes her new role effective May 2.“City council conducted a thorough search for the

replacement of Mr. Levac and we are pleased with the result,” said Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy. “Maureen

Adams is the perfect fit for continuing many of the progressive initiatives currently underway and we are pleased that she has accepted this position.”

Adams is no stranger to the City of Cornwall. For the past eight years, she has served as finance man-ager, a key position that involves overseeing the annual city budget process and ensuring the City maintains a strong financial position. In this capacity, Adams oversaw financial plans for key infrastructure projects such as the Benson Centre and Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade.

Her leadership experience in the municipal sec-tor is complemented by a 20-year private sector career in both the banking and manufacturing industries.

“I am really excited by this new opportunity to

work alongside the mayor and council and build

Cornwall into an even greater city,” said Adams. “We

have a lot of great attributes and I’m looking forward

to working with council, city staff and community

partners to build on our strengths.”

CORRECTIONAn incorrect photo ran in last week’s edition, on

Page 8, concerning the annual spring cleanup underway in Cornwall. Seaway News regrets the error.

CLARIFICATIONAn item that appeared in this space last week

created some confusion concerning a Cornwall family. A police blotter item identifying Devon MacDonald did not include all of the information provided by police. His age is, in fact, 27. An online report contained the age, but this information was inadvertantly omitted from the printed copy. Seaway News regrets any confusion this ommission created.

CARNEgIE HALL pERFORmANCEThey say the way to Carnegie Hall is simple

- practice.Cornwall’s Rebecca Runions, a violinist, hopes to

hit all the right notes when she performs at the famed New York City venue this weekend as part of a performance celebrating the bicentennial of the State University of New York.

She, along with other chosen performers with the Crane Symphony orchestra and the Crane Chorus, will have the opportunity to work with Duain Wolfe, director of the Chicago Symphony Chorus, and baritone Christopher Feigum.

She lent her talents to many local fundraising events for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Cancer Society, the Rotary Club, the Cornwall Community Hospital, Cornwall Hospice, and Ontario Senior Games to name a few. Although her studies have been in the classical realm, she also plays Celtic style music and has opened for Buddy Macmaster, and played duets with Natalie Macmaster.

CORNwALL RAgINg RObOTsThis is not your typical Lego activity. The Cornwall Raging Robots, a FIRST Lego

League team of nine to 14-year-olds, hosted an open house at the Care Centre (formerly the Cornwall General Hospital) on Sunday (May 1).

Roughly eight members and their parents attend weekly meetings at the centre, which take place Thursdays from 6-8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. during tournament season.

It costs $50 to join the Raging Robots. But Menon says that barely covers registration fees since the robotics program costs $3,000 annually to operate.

Inspired by Maxville’s NGS Tech Tigers, the Raging Robots formed in 2013 wanting to get hands-on with science and technology.

For more information, visit www.facebook.com/CornwallRobotics.

HIkE FOR HOspICEThe 14th annual Hike for Hospice in Cornwall

raised $55,000.Dwight Grant, bagpiper with the South

Glengarry Pipes and Drums, led over 150 people from the centre’s parking lot on a 30-minute trek

around the city’s bicycle path on Sunday (May 1).Sandy Collette, fundraising coordinator for

Carefor Hospice Cornwall, thanked the commun-ity for their support despite the rainy weather.

“We’re a little lower than usual (in regards to participants), but the money is tracking well,” said Collette.

Since the centre only receives partial govern-ment funding, every year $500,000 has to be raised to meet its operational budget.

NEw LIFE IN HIsTORIC sITEAfter 170 years, the Martintown Grist Mill

continues to cement its place as South Glengarry’s premiere venue for local history and cultural activities, thanks to a provincial funding boost.

Local MPP Jim McDonell announced Friday (April 29) the mill has been awarded an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant in the amount of $61,700 (over a five-month period).

“The mill is one of the community land-marks that hightlight our region’s rich history as the birthplace on Ontario and a cradle of agri-cultural and industrial excellence,” said McDonell. “Beyond its recognized historical sig-nificance, the Martintown Grist Mill functions as a hub for the community to engage in explor-ing our roots, showcasing its creativity, and coming together to celebrate local agriculture.”

The grant will help with the replacement of the roof and the completion of the restoration of the building through the installation of win-dows on the south side.

COLLEAguEs sAy gOOdbyEUnited Counties officials have paid thanks to

SD&G OPP’s outgoing detachment command-er, describing him as a “respected member of the local policing community.”

Insp. BJ MacDonald is saying farewell to his colleagues after years of service to start a new senior management position with OPP regional headquarters in Smiths Falls on May 9.

“The board has had a very good rapport with MacDonald over the years, and we have worked together extremely well,” said Dennis Fife, United Counties councillor and SD&G Police Services Board chair.

SD&G OPP provides policing to 66,000 residents.

“We wish him all the best in his new position, and look forward to maintaining positive rela-tions with the SD&G detachment and his suc-cessor,” Fife added.

‘dEmENTIA-FRIENdLy’ COmmuNITyCornwall is one of the first, if not the first,

municipalities in Ontario to designate itself a dementia-friendly community.

City council voted this week to have all front-line municipal staff trained to deal with persons with dementia. The city will also identify muni-cipal buildings as dementia-friendly offices.

As a city where nearly 40 per cent of the population is grappling with a dementia diag-nosis, or is caring from someone with the afflic-tion, the news is being welcomed by experts

“One of the things that people living with dementia…have said is that it is really challen-ging for them to get out,” said Shelley Vaillancourt, executive director of the local Alzheimer’s Society of Canada office. “They need supports. When they say to people they have dementia…those people don’t know what to do next.”

Adopt a street, help keep Cornwall beautifulCORNWALL, Ont. – People power is being

used to combat littering in the Seaway City.Following on the heels of another successful

Spring Clean-Up Week event, the City of Cornwall is launching a new Adopt-A-Street program in the community.

Through the program, residents and groups ‘adopt’ a particular street, sidewalk or park and agree to pick up litter in that area on a regular basis. The city, in turn, provides safety training and supplies and also picks up the litter col-lected at designated points - when need be.

“This represents a great partnership between the city and community-minded

volunteers,” said Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy. “It’s a great way to build community pride and enhance the overall look of our city by building on the regular beautification efforts under-taken by city staff during the spring and sum-mer months. It really is a win-win.”

Fittingly, the Adopt-A-Street program ori-ginated at the grassroots level.

Residents Rod and Marie-Paule Millard moved to Cornwall several years ago. Seeing an issue with litter, they began picking it up on a regular basis while out walking along Nick Kaneb Drive and they encouraged others to do the same.

The Millards researched the Adopt-A-Street experience in other communities and brought it forward to the City’s Municipal Environmental Advisory Committee (MEAC) and City Council where it was well-received.

They are among the first to register for the program, having adopted the northern portion of Nick Kaneb Drive between Marleau Avenue and Holy Cross Boulevard.

“We are thrilled to see this program taking flight,” said Mrs. Millard. “It’s a great way for resi-dents to show their pride. It also sets a positive example for our children and helps to get the message across that littering is not

acceptable.”Volunteers who register to ‘adopt’ an area

are asked to commit to clean the area a min-imum of at least once per month during the period of April to October. In return, the city will provide litter pickers, gloves, reflective safety vests, bags and other supplies that may be necessary.

A listing of participating groups will eventu-ally be posted online so residents can keep track of the areas that have been adopted.

The Amazing Rotary Rally kicks off Saturday (May 14) from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., followed by judging, refreshments, entertainment, and prizes. Registration will start at noon.

“The Amazing Rotary Rally combines the thrills of a car rally with the fun of a scavenger hunt,” said Bette Miller, Cornwall Sunrise Rotary Club member and event communications coordinator.

Participants will meet at the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) parking lot (329 Pitt Street). The registration fee is $25 per person.

Proceeds will support the new mental health facility attached to the Cornwall Community Hospital.

“For Rotarians who are concerned with the future and wellbeing of the citizens of this com-munity, it is only logical for us to lend our sup-port to the initiatives that are already underway to help address mental health issues right here

in our own community,” said Miller. “The well-being of our youth is essential for the future suc-cess of individuals, families and (this and other) communities.”

Teams (of two to four individuals) will be required to find items, answer trivia questions, take team photos, and respond to challenges during a four-hour timeframe.

Each team will need a car, a camera, and a can-do attitude.

“To make the rally more appealing, this year, we’ve shortened the route (by two hours), and moved it into the downtown area,” said Miller.

Teams will also have to decide if they want to go for a high volume of tasks or try and go for the higher valued tasks for bigger points. The winner is the group with the most points at the end of the day. All participants must be at least 18 years of age.

Online registration is available at: www.amazingrotaryrally.com. For further informa-tion, contact Amazing Rotary Rally co-chair Chris Bookhout at [email protected] or at 613-363-3204.

11th annual Bark & Compost Day being held on Saturday

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall & District Horticultural Society (CDHS), in partnership with the City of Cornwall, will be hosting the 11th annu-al Bark & Compost Day at the Landfill Site on Saturday, May 7th from 9 am to 1 pm.

Wood mulch and compost will be sold pre-bagged or by the scoop. With the environment in mind, you may also recycle your bags from last year or bring your blue boxes or similar containers for filling on-the-spot by Society volunteers.

Bags (or containers) of each product will be sold for $3.00 each; buy 10 and get one free! Scoops will be $25.00 for the first scoop and $15.00 for each additional scoop. Two scoops fill the aver-age pick-up truck. One dollar from the sale of each bag/container of compost will be donated to the Children’s Christmas Fund to purchase cereal and/or milk for the Christmas Food Baskets.

The mulch, locally produced, is excellent for moisture retention and weed control when applied generously to flowerbeds and around newly planted trees and shrubs. It also helps main-tain an even ground temperature so plant roots don’t bake under the hot summer sun. All of this means your plants will thrive with less effort and watering. This year’s product is from hardwood, a finer mulch.

Compost, produced at the landfill site, is a rich organic matter important for healthy soil. City resi-dents’ leaf and yard waste is collected at the curb-side and then composted at the landfill site. Eighteen months later, the most wonderful com-post is ready to use. When worked into your gar-den earth the compost will help produce prolific plants and at the same time improve the structure of your soil. It is also an excellent natural fertilizer for your lawn.

The CDHS, also known as Friends of the Garden, uses the monies raised on this day to not only fund its monthly meetings and special events, but also to give back to the community. Past and present projects include community gardening at a num-ber of venues around the city, donations of tulip bulbs for the cenotaph and container gardens given to local senior residences, planting at Habitat for Humanity homes, Cornwall Hospice, planting and garden maintenance at the RCAFA Wing 424 and monetary donations and support to Seaway Valley Community Health Centre’s Community Gardens and The Children’s Treatment Centre.

Please join Friends on Saturday, May 7th, rain or shine, from 9 am to 1 pm for Bark and Compost Day. The City’s Landfill Site is located at 2590 Cornwall Centre Road West - watch for the signs.

*Actual amount may vary. **Targeted monthly distribution rates are based on the net asset value per unit of a fund as at the fund’s previous year-end. Target distributions are not guaranteed and may change at any time at the discretion of the fund’s Manager. If distributions paid by the fund are greater than the performance of the fund, distributions paid may include a return of capital and an investor’s original investment will shrink. A return of capital is not taxable to the investor, but will generally reduce the adjusted cost base of the securities held for tax purposes. If the adjusted cost base falls below zero, investors will realize capital gains equal to the amount below zero. Distributions are automatically reinvested unless an investor elects to receive them in cash. Investors should not confuse a fund’s distribution rate with its performance, rate of return or yield.

Movie immortalizes failed attempt to jump St. Lawrence RiverTodd [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ontario – The mysticism of a bizarre stunt involving a rocket-powered car jumping the St. Lawrence River has been immortalized on film.

‘Aim for the Roses’, from writer John Bolton, had its world premiere on the weekend in Toronto. The road to the premiere of the film featured at Hot Docs - the Canadian international documentary festival - is nearly as circuitous as the stunt itself.

The stunt involved flying over the St. Lawrence River in a rocket-powered Lincoln with Canadian Ken Carter at the wheel in the 1970s. Carter never actually made the attempt – he was replaced at the last minute by American Ken Powers.

The movie is about the jump, but also about a 2008 concept album written by double bassist Mark Haney who paid tribute to the spectacle by way of music.

Not unlike the failed jump (the car barely made it off the ramp before disintegrating) there’s a lot of moving parts, so try to keep up.

“It was kind of like going down the rabbit hole. I never thought I would listen to this album and then get to know people who knew so much about Ken Carter,” said Bolton, who also produced

and directed the movie. “I had to sort of focus. For me, what’s interesting is this is my interpretation of Mark’s interpretation of Ken. Those are the levels.”

The movie features a liberal dose of two Cornwall-area men who remain fascinated with the jump and the mythos of the time.

Andrew Whitton and Cody Glive have created the Ken Carter Preservation Society. They have col-lected ‘relics’ of the Lincoln that was destroyed in the jump, including one of the vehicle’s wings and are featured prominently in the film.

“They give a tour of the site and offer their opinions after all these years,” said Bolton, adding the duo received an ovation when they were intro-duced to the audience following the movie’s pre-miere. “What’s been really fun is to see them. They’re now characters in the Ken Carter story.”

Whitton and Glive showed the jump site to Bolton when the filmmaker toured the site as the movie was being prepared. While the pair were upset that the locale has seen the ramp demol-ished and left to the wilds, Bolton was impressed.

“It’s overgrown…this is exactly what you want for a film because it looks so different,” said Bolton. “There’s a part in the film where they show us the garbage that has been left there.

“They said It would be nice if this would become a heritage sight.”

The film is available to rent, or purchase, at iTunes and Bolton said it’s hoped Aim for the Roses

will be screened locally in the future.“We’re going to do everything we can to do a

screening there – it’s just tough to say when,” he said.

A fundraiser by Kohen Paschek’s family and supporters raised $4,010 for Meagan’s Walk – a Toronto agency that collects funds for research into childhood cancer-related illnesses.

Todd [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ontario – Little Kohen Paschek may be saddled with an incurable form of cancer – but the way he bombs around his west-end Cornwall home it sure looks like he is going to enjoy every minute of life.

Kohen has endured more in his two years than most adults contend with in a lifetime, having been diagnosed just last spring with an aggressive form of cancer that has attacked his brain and spinal column.

His parents Jessie McDonald and Karl Paschek have fought tooth and nail for their son, lobbying doctors to consider treatment for Kohen when the initial diagnosis was incredibly dire.

“They told us to prepare ourselves to begin to plan our son’s funeral,” said McDonald, stopping to stifle tears that are just below the surface. “But we said no.”

Karl quickly jumped on his phone and began Googling top neurosurgeons in Canada and as it turns out doctors at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children were able to remove 90 per cent of a mas-sive tumour that had taken up some 35 per cent of Kohen’s tiny skull.

The good news is that in combination with treatments like stem cell replacement and in spite of the initial prognosis of a quick passing, doctors say there is no evidence of disease in Kohen.

The bad news is the type of cancer he has, which includes what is known as a primitive neuroectodermal tumour, has a 98 per cent chance of returning within three to five years.

And treatment options have been all but used up.

“I wake up every morning, looking for some-thing,” said Jessie, who examines her son’s eyes, vision and gate to see if he is exhibiting symptoms associated with a reoccurrence of brain cancer. “We live in utter fear waiting for something to come.”

The family highlighted their story at the recent Candlelighters gala in Cornwall, where McDonald shared the family’s odyssey publicly for the first time.

After hiding the diagnosis, in large part, from family and friends McDonald is now going public because she wants to share the plight of families grappling with a terminal illness – and fundraising efforts are taking place to add to the research being done on children like Kohen.

Because of the small number of cases involving

young children like Kohen with the aggressive cancer he has, treatment options aren’t as varied as they might be for other children suffering with leukemia, as an example.

“I can’t believe we came that close to losing our son,” she said. “My son was treated with 1992 sci-ence. Many of these kids are a write-off.”

Indeed the type of cancer the family is battling is present in just a handful of cases of patients younger than 25 – and almost never for a child as young as Kohen.

The fight has left Jessie and her husband withered.

“I’m broken,” she said, once again fighting back tears. “It’s not just his trauma, but it’s the trauma of seeing all the other families, and parents who have lost their children.

“I can still see the doctor’s face when she walked up to us after he had his first MRI. She looked like she had seen a ghost. She told us she had never seen anything like it.”

Despite a large scar on the top of his head, Kohen shows few outward appearances of fight-ing cancer. He is kept home for the most part, to avoid contact with people so that he can avoid cold and the flu.

He plays with his sister, playfully smacks his mom with a toy, and is enthralled with strangers who bring things like shiny new cameras to his home.

But he’s still a sick little boy.“Waking to our beautiful three-year-old son

looking and behaving as normally as any other three-year-old little boy is just amazing,” said

McDonald, who holds a special place in her heart for the doctors who saved her son. “It is all because of the care we received at the Hospital for Sick Children. Without the research that has been done in the stem cell field, we probably wouldn’t have our son here with us today.”

As a thank you, and in an effort to raise aware-ness, the family hosted a charity garage sale that brought in $5,765 for Meagan’s Walk – a Toronto agency that collects funds for research into child-hood cancer-related illnesses.

Another event, Saturday April 30, raised a fur-ther $4,010.

Also, local restaurant Eight Zero Zero has put together a special menu for patrons, known as ‘Kohen’s Menu’, for similar fundraising efforts. The family sells custom ribbons and pins as well.

OPINIONRandom thoughts to kickstart May

Editor:Ah, Fluoride! Ah…freedom of speech!Since everyone is weighing in on this issue, I

feel compelled to do so also, even at the risk of alienating those that I know.

So city council has had the opportunity to hear from some experts. It is amazing how people of position are able to twist and use their vocabulary and marketing skills to convince the masses to agree to one-sided viewpoints, biased viewpoints and agendas.

On one side, we have an agenda that is gov-ernment driven. On the other side those that don’t believe the government. Then there are all those in the middle who don’t know what to believe, are

not sure or haven’t had the time to even find out for themselves. With the constant barrage of headlines about corruption, it is getting harder and harder to trust government driven agendas. Those agendas are backed by government spon-sored studies, government paid employees and government paid marketing.. You can be guaran-teed that money is on the line. Whether it is driven by large corporations or not, the pro-fluoride cam-paign has money attached to it. Somebody has to sell it, somebody has to buy it and somebody wants to profit from it.

The argument about the need for fluoride for the economically challenged in our community is a very poor argument. The same amount of

money needed to reinstate the fluoride system, or less, could be spent educating everyone on prop-er brushing and flossing. Even less fortunate people can brush. Remember, clean teeth do not rot.

I have cavities, plenty of them. However, I can tell you that it was my own fault. Do you think I’d get away with foolishly drinking all that Coke and Pepsi? I’m talking about pails and pails of it. Sometimes 4-8 cans a day.

No, I guess not, and no amount of fluoride would have helped me either.

And look in the mirror, I’m not the only one that didn’t shy away from unhealthy, sugary diets……maybe that should be a study.

I would like to use the analogy of the council being a jury. In a jury scenario with a murder case....if the jurors can’t be 100 per cent conclusive and convinced that the accused is absolutely guilty according to the evidence, then they must rest on the side of caution and cannot find the accused guilty. Same for our council on fluoride.

We pay for water, WATER, not crap added to it, which by the way, most of which is used to do laundry, dishes, lawns, fill pools, flush toilets, showering, wash cars etc.

My vote would be NO. I would encourage as many people as possible to say NO to your councilors.

102,310.It’s just a number, but it represents the dollars

raised in just a single weekend in Cornwall for a bunch of events that fly under the radar for rank and file members of our region.

In the 20 years I have been working in Cornwall and area as a journalist it never ceases to amaze me how our community rallies around itself when someone needs help.

Hospice Cornwall ($55,000), the local MS Society office ($37,000-plus) headlined a weekend that also included other fundraising activities in the name of a young boy waging war with brain cancer, another group collected for breast cancer research and work was also done to help a little girl fighting leukemia.

We’re a lot of things in Cornwall – but cheap isn’t one of them.

Oh, and that number I mentioned above…it’s probably wrong. It’s too small.

RIVERDALE SPLASHPADCity council gave its approval last week to spend

$150,000 on that new splash pad in Riverdale Park all the kids have been asking about. Riverdale Park has been without liquid-based fun since the aged swimming pool in the west-end neighbourhood was removed two years ago.

A municipal purchase order has been fired off to ABS Recreation to build the new splash pad – the big question now is when it will be ready for use.

The hope is that some time later this summer children will be frolicking in the splash pad. But it’s

only a hope. There’s still a very real possibility the construction won’t be done in time for this sum-mer. It will take as long as eight weeks just to get the equipment.

Here’s hoping ABC Recreation can move quickly.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, CANADACanada’s sesquicentennial (say that three times,

fast) will be marked throughout the nation in 2017. It marks the 150th anniversary of confederation.

Your city council has snapped into action and is mulling events centred around the waterfront, and in particular Pointe Maligne and Lamoureux Park, that will take place next winter.

The events being considered range from illuminating the trees in the park, to creating a fish-ing derby and building a skating rink. Plans are still in the early stages and no money has been set aside to pay for any municipal costs associated with the celebration.

The initial plan was to hold the events in December and January, but because of the milder temperatures we’ve experienced in recent years to start winter, it’s now believed the events will take place in January and February.

SIR, YES SIRIf you’re looking for Coun. Justin Towndale you

won’t find him at city hall until after Labour Day. City council gave its assent to grant the rookie councillor a leave of absence until Sept. 9 while he trains as a member of the Canadian Forces.

While there had been muted grumbling in some circles from a small number of councillors about the decision, publicly it was all back-slapping and high-fives for Towndale’s decision to join the army when

it came time to allow his three-month departure. Can you imagine if council had said no and

demanded his resignation? The national media would have loved that.

DOWNTOWN BUSKINGSpeaking of Towndale, one his last official duties

as a councillor before taking his leave was to author a motion (along with colleague Carilyne Hebert) to see if busking would be a good fit for Pitt Street.

Busking is the time-honoured tradition of per-forming in public places for gratuities, and is typ-ically associated with singing or playing music.

Administrators are working out the details of what it would take to allow street performances on Pitt Street between Fourth and Water streets during

the summer months. Lamoureux Park would also be available for busking.

A report on the subject is expected to return to city council for perusal in the coming weeks.

It says here council will likely green-light the move.

Things are certainly changing downtown. I can remember when I had to WALK my bike in the Pitt Street promenade for fear a guy like George Assally would scream at me. Ditto my brother on his skateboard.

Now we’re considering allowing people to play live music in the same location, at their own discre-tion. It’s about time.

OPINIONCornwall judge goes next-door to pen Carpenter tributeClaude MCINtOsh

Gilles Renaud didn’t have to look far to fulfil his dream of having a hand in a sports biography.

He discovered one living next door. The hard part was convincing a modest and

very private Doug Carpenter to spend hours talking about an athletic journey that took him from learning to play hockey on neighbour Otis Cain’s outdoor rink to the bright lights of the National Hockey League.

Renaud wouldn’t take no for an answer. He admits to “harassing” the former NHL coach until he finally gave in last year. The result is the soon-to-be-published “A Royal Career: Conversations with Doug Carpenter”, a splendid account of one of Cornwall’s best-known sports personalities. It is a book that is long overdue and a must read for the thousands of fans who followed his career.

For author Renaud, a much respected Ontario Court judge, it was a labour of love, a diversion from the courtroom.

Carpenter talks about attending a one-room, one-teacher school on Tollgate Road, having his mother for a teacher at West Front public school and playing football for the legendary Art Anderson. Of playing for the Montreal Junior Canadiens and his long East Coast Hockey League career. Of playing his final game without realizing at the time it would be his last as a player, and how the door for a coach-ing career suddenly sprung open during the season.

He recounts how when the semi-pro coach-ing door closed, the junior hockey door opened with the opportunity to return to his

hometown. As for coaching in that glass bowl called the

Toronto Maple Leafs, he draws on a Charles Dickens’ quote, “It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.”

On Harold Ballard’s quip that Carpenter, coach of the Leafs’ AHL farm club, didn’t look like an NHL coach because he dressed like Herb Tarlek, a comical character in the TV sitcom WKRP, Carpenter says it could have been worse, that he could have been compared to Reggie Dunlop, the Slap Shot character played by Paul Newman.

And his take on Ballard’s meddling? He points out that the owner signed the paychecks.

He talks about the influence his parents had on him, and how his mother, an elementary teacher, was a teacher 24/7. Like when his pal Gilles Leger would call and asked “Can I speak to Doug?” Mom Carpenter would correct him. “No Gilles. You should say, ‘May I speak to Doug’.”

He is living proof that education does not have to be sacrificed on the hockey altar. He holds a bachelor’s degree with a major in phil-osophy and a minor in history, along with a teaching certificate.

As a junior coach, he insisted that his players not only attend school but pass the courses. He let it be known to schools that when his players were not attending classes or were under-achieving, the hockey team (Carpenter) would respond. No surprise that all his players gradu-ated from high school, despite the spring play-off grind.

On a more personal note, he recounts that he met the love of his life and long-time partner, Marcia, at of all places a car rally. He calls her his

“gold medal” win.Carpenter is best remembered in Cornwall

as a miracle worker; the coach who guided the underdog Royals to an incredible Memorial Cup victory in 1980. The downside for the Royals was that his brilliant piece of coaching grabbed the attention of pro teams.

The next season he left training camp for an offer too tempting to turn down - head coach of the New Brunswick Hawks of the American Hockey League.

Carpenter recounts the gut-wrenching deci-sion he had to make at an awkward time of the season.

His coaching career, which started with the Flint Generals in 1974, ended in Halifax in 1993, the year after he was named AHL coach of the year and won a second silver medal at the world hockey championships. This time as an assistant coach with Team Canada .

Fans might be surprised that winning the 1980 Memorial Cup and coaching Team Canada to a silver medal at the 1985 world champion-ships while thrilling moments were not his most satisfying moments in sports.

He counts being named the first winner of the Jacques Richard Memorial Trophy as his most satisfying moment. Richard and Carpenter were close friends and teammates when the 18-year-old was killed in a boating accident near Sudbury in 1959.

TRIVIA: Aug. 15, 1945 was declared a civic holiday complete with a parade and evening street dance on Pitt Street. The Standard-Freeholder published an Extra Edition. What was the event?

TRIVIA ANSWER: The funeral for King George VI was held Feb. 15, 1952. Cornwall’s

businesses and theatres closed for the day and churches held special services.

IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR: Retired news-paper/radio man Bill LaSalle posted a 1980 photo of the local radio staff. They include Keith Clingen, Gord Shaver, Wayne Waldroff, Marc Pilote, Carl Fisher, Phil Jasmin, Barry Wright, Bill Gallant and Jacques Fournier. ... One of the urchins came across my portable typewriter stored in the backyard shed. First question - What is this? Second question - What does it do? ... Not all that long ago I was asked “What’s a rotary phone?” ... It was before my time but the Pearson dance hall on Sydney Street (before it was re-aligned during construction of Cornwall Square) was the “hot spot” on Saturday nights. No DJs. Live orchestras and bands. In her book “The Friendly Town That Grew”, Eileen Merkley recalled the Second World War days and the Wednesday dances for the Highlanders and sol-diers at the basic training centre. For the Saturday night flings, the guys wore sports jack-ets, creased slacks and crew cuts. ... The dance haunts for the later generation (aka boomers) included the Knights of Columbus, St. Columban’s hall and post-football game tea dances. This was before they graduated to the more exotic destinations that their parents knew nothing about - the Diamond Horseshoe, the Willow Grove and the White House. ... When high schools had cadet programs in the spring that finished off with the cadet inspection. One year Cornwall Collegiate and 1,200 cadets who marched to the Athletic Grounds for inspection day. ... The school had a rifle range in the base-ment. As somebody mentioned the other day, imagine having a shooting range in a school these days?

OPINION – sultaN Jessa

Elephants have roamed the wilds of Africa for many generations. Now, all of a sudden there is a real threat the new generations may not have the opportunity to see these magnificent animals. Many experts believe these iconic spe-cies could be extinct from the wild by 2025. In some countries of Africa, including Sierra Leone Senegal, elephants have already been driven to extinction.

That is precisely why progressive countries like Kenya in East Africa have taken drastic steps to fight poachers and put an end to ivory trade.

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta set fire to

the world’s biggest ivory bonfire a few days ago after demanding a total ban on the trade in tusks to end illegal ivory trade.

“The height of the pile of ivory before us marks the strength of our resolve,” Kenyatta declared before setting fire to the ivory. “No one, and I repeat no one, has any business in trading in ivory, for this trade means death of our ele-phants and death of our natural heritage.”

Conservationists are warning the world these majestic elephants cannot survive Asia’s high dollar demand for ivory tusks.

There has been a huge increase in poaching activities and it is often reported that some

wildlife agents, customs officials and govern-ment leaders are being paid off by what is being viewed as a well organized crime group.

This group, it is claimed, is moving ivory from Africa to Asia in huge quantities.

The elephant population in Africa in the 1950s numbered five million. By 1989, this num-ber dropped to 450,000 in the continent. The number has dwindled because of poaching. Elephants in Africa are now being pushed to extinction. Experts say if poaching continues, it will severely threaten tourism, the continent’s biggest foreign exchange earner. Wildlife experts say the current elephant massacre is a

stark reminder of 1970s when well armed poachers decimated elephant population, often with impunity.

The poaching is on the increase because of the demand for ivory in China.

The price of raw elephant tusks in China has more than tripled in the past year.

All drastic steps must be taken to stop the killing of elephants. International organizations and world powers must get involved in ending this frenzy as ivory fuels wars and profits.

According to latest estimates, up to 36,000 elephants are slaughtered each year. This means one elephant is killed every 15 minutes.

EOTB - MAKING IT WORK

Cornwall teen biotechnology wiz headed to prestigious competitionAdAM [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ont. – This is no ordinary sci-ence fair. CCVS Grade 12 student Jakhan Ponnudurai will be competing in the Sanofi Biogenius Canada regional competition at the University of Ottawa’s Biosciences Complex on Wednesday (April 13).

“I’m into all aspects of science, but what I like about this competition is the microbiology aspect,” said Ponnudurai. “I want to go into bio-chemistry and do a lot of lab work in future years. I thought this would give me great

experience. And it’s not overly complicated. It’s a nice first step.”

The 17-year-old told Seaway News in an interview it has taken months of extracurricular activities to prepare his project: ‘Induced Mutations in E. coli with Ampicillin.’

“There’s E. coli that we grew, and we found out at what concentration of the antibiotic Ampicillin that it would die at and we chose a concentration it wouldn’t die, and we continu-ously grew it in that stressful environment. Then we redid the test to find out what concentration it will die at,” explained Ponnudurai. “The results are in and the E. coli has a larger resistence to

Ampicillin after growing in that stressful environment for seven days. That means, appli-cation-wise, an improper use of anti-biotics increases the bacteria’s resistance to it, which is dangerous and can create superbugs that are anti-biotic resistant.”

According ot its website, the Sanofi Biogenius Canada competition nurtures young minds and fosters talent in the field of biotechnology.

At each regional exhibition, an expert panel of judges selects the winning projects using a select criteria.

Students are not only evaluated on the qual-ity of their research, lab journal, and display, but are also questioned on their scientific know-ledge as well as potential commercial applica-tions of their research.

The challenge also gives Ponnudurai the opportunity to conduct research in a science lab under the guidance of mentors from the Cornwall campus of St. Lawrence College and St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences.

CCVS biology teacher Genny St. Germain said when she encouraged students to enter the competition in September 2015. Only one Raider stepped forward.

“He’s an excellent student; very keen learner, proactive with his work and studies. So when we set this up, he was definitely one of my first choices,” said St. Germain.

Her and Ponnudurai found out his proposal was accepted in December 2015.

Ponnudurai plans on studying biochemistry this fall at the University of Toronto.

FAST FACTSAccording to its website, Sanofi Biogenius

Canada began in the Toronto area in 1994, aimed at raising awareness among students, educators, and the public about the emerging field of biotechnology. Quickly gaining traction over the next two decades, the SBC now hosts annual competitions across every Canadian province, as well as extending its reach globally, with competitions in Australia and the U.S.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Area employers are optimistic about their hiring plans for the rest of 2016, according to a recent survey of local firms.

The Employer One survey, conducted in the first quarter of 2016, indicated that 26.9 per cent of the 1,013 area employers who responded expect to hire in the coming year.

The figures were released Thursday by the Eastern Ontario Training Board.

In addition, 43 per cent of survey respond-ents said they hired people in 2015.

“Every year, local employers have reported hiring far more people than they anticipated hiring, which is good news for residents of SDG and P-R counties,” said Diane Soucie, Labour Market Information Analyst for EOTB. “We’ve

surveyed employers for three years now, and the hiring trend is positive and moving upwards.”

Denis Thibault, executive director of the training board said trejnds suggest the hiring climate is positive.

“This survey found that the share of employers who had hard-to-fill jobs decreased and more employers rated the availability of qualified workers in our five counties higher than last year,” he said.

The survey asked employers in Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry, Prescott and Russell about their hiring plans, practices, needs and chal-lenges, including skills requirements and shortages.

“We are hoping that this year’s results reflect a trend where employers are hiring that talent locally,” said EOTB assistant manager

Martha Woods.

Results are shared with employers,

government and other groups, including two

dozen community organizations.

SPORTSGOLF

A tiny piece of equipment in constant evolution

Designed to elevate the ball on the tee-off, the tee has evolved considerably over the years. This simple little wooden peg has made a lot of progress and still remains an important acces-sory for golfers.

The time is long gone when players used a pile of sand to elevate the ball! The arrival of the wooden tee not only allowed golfers to improve their drives but also to avoid damaging the grass on the tee-offs. Tees have become much more sophisticated over the years. These days they are made mainly from variously coloured wood or plastic. Some golfers prefer the trad-itional wooden tees for their effectiveness, while others will opt for those made in plastic because of their greater durability.

Large manufacturers of golf equipment are constantly searching for improvements and a wide variety of tees are now available on the market. One option is the wooden tee in two colours and varying lengths, while the range of plastic tees is more elaborate. Apart from con-ventional tees it is also possible to obtain “zero friction” tees, where the ball is placed on three small supports. There are also oversized “brush” tees that reduce the rotation of the ball and tees of adjustable heights. Biodegradable tees made of bamboo are also available in specialized stores.

It’s hard to believe that one of the smallest and most useful accessories continues to help golfers improve their game!

Fitness fundraiser steps up support for breast cancer researchAdAm [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ont. – A sea of Zumba dan-cers decked in pink took over the Cornwall Square, raising over $6,000 for the Breast Cancer Society of Canada.

For the fifth consecutive year, dozens of people rallied at ZwithC’s ‘Paint the Mall Pink for a Cause’ fundraiser in partnership with the long-running Cleo ‘Mother’s Day Walk’ on Sunday (May 1).

“We raised double last year’s amount,” said Bowen, ZwithC instructor and event co-organizer. “Our original goal was $2,000. So I couldn’t be more proud of this amazing group. We battled ‘Bowen style’ in the middle of the mall for a one-of-a-kind dance off that hyped up the energy and allowed people to remember what they were fighting for.”

Funds raised through additional Zumba

classes also added to the cause. As the pounding bass of dance music

blared downstairs, breast cancer survivors and their supporters walked upstairs.

Over the course of two weekends this May, more than 80 walks in support of Breast Cancer Society of Canada will take place across Canada.

ADAM [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ont. – The 14th annual Hike for Hospice in Cornwall raised $55,000.

Dwight Grant, bagpiper with the South Glengarry Pipes and Drums, led over 150 people from the centre’s parking lot on a 30-minute trek around the city’s bicycle path on Sunday (May 1).

Sandy Collette, fundraising coordinator for Carefor Hospice Cornwall, thanked the com-munity for their support despite the rainy weather.

“We’re a little lower than usual (in regards to participants), but the money is tracking well,” said Collette.

Since the centre only receives partial gov-ernment funding, every year $500,000 has to be raised to meet its operational budget.

Once again, the top individual fundraiser was Ray O’Collin. The dapper gentleman col-lected over $7,000; his running tally is roughly $70,000.

For more information about volunteering or how to make a donation, visit www.corn-wallhospice.com/donate.

Denis Thibault, directeur général, a dit « Il y a eu quelques nouvelles tendances positives.

get hooked on trivia at Captain george’sadam [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ont. – Captain George’s Fish ‘n’ Chips in west-end Cornwall will be hosting a new series of trivia nights to help patrons beat the Monday blues.

Enjoy an interactive trivia event on select Mondays starting May 2 at 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m. There is no admission fee.

“Come join us for trivia night on Monday evenings,” said Surinder Gill, owner of Captain George’s Fish & Chips in Brockville and Cornwall. “We’re proud to be hosting this exciting new

addition to the city’s restaurant scene.”Paul Paquet, of Trivia Hall of Fame, has been

operating the entertainment service for two decades, starting in Ottawa and branching out to Montreal, Toronto, and London, Ont.

“Live trivia has become very popular, there are crowds of people who follow the events reli-giously,” said Paquet. “It’s a chance to get togeth-er and it’s a cellphone-free zone (since texting looks exactly like Googling an answer). All the questions are about pop-culture and designed to provoke conversation.”

Gill added: “There’s a market for this in

Cornwall that is under-serviced. So we’re glad to bring trivia to our restaurant.”

Paquet boasted about the natural hosting skills of Captain George’s kitchen manager Jefferson Harper.

“He has a great presence,” he said. “I train people in Ottawa all the time, and it take years to get his level of confidence. And he had the voice for it right off the top.”

In addition to bragging rights, the fist and second place winners will receive gift certificates.

The licensed eatery offers fish and chips, in

addition to other seafood fare like shrimp, scal-lops, and clams as well as something for the land lubbers, including hamburgers and souv-laki chicken.

If you’ve got room left, Gill has also opened Cowan’s Dairy next door, which offers 40 fla-vours of hard ice cream, in addition to ice cream cakes.

Capt. George’s Fish ‘n’ Chips is located at 1195 Second Street.

Broil quail: Arrange oven rack so that top of quail (on top of broiler pan) will be 2 inches from heat, then preheat broiler. Lightly oil broiler pan and heat under broiler until hot. HOME IMPROVEMENT

10 tips for spray painting metal

Spray painting is a quick and easy way to paint metal surfaces. You can paint metal furniture, door knobs, cabinets and appliances. Spray painting pro-vides a smooth, even finish that is very difficult to achieve with a paint brush. Below are some useful tips for spray painting metal surfaces.

Tip 1: Work in a Ventilated AreaFor a metallic object, use a metallic finish spray

paint. Because spray painting results in the emis-sion of very fine particles of paint, it is important to prevent excessive inhalation. Open all windows and close the door to the room in which you are

painting. Wear a pair of gloves to avoid getting paint on your hands.

Tip 2: Clean the Work AreaSpray painting will give best results if the sur-

rounding temperature, humidity and windiness are under control. Avoid working in freezing temper-atures, excessive wind and high humidity. For best results, you must thoroughly clean the surrounding area, or else dust particles can fly around and settle on the painted surface when it is wet.

Tip 3: Protect Surrounding Surfaces with Drop Cloths

After cleaning the area, protect all surrounding items and the floor with drop cloths. If you are painting a small item, it helps to place it in a make-shift cubicle made of scrap cardboard. This will con-tain the paint spray inside.

Tip 4: Remove Any RustIt is important to remove all rust before you

spray paint a metal surface. For this purpose you can use sandpaper or a wire brush. Scrub out all the rust and then wipe the surface clean.

Tip 5: Remove Grease and DirtClean the metal surface thoroughly beforehand.

This will improve paint adhesion and finish. Use grease cutting cleaner to remove all accumulated grease. Also ensure that the surface is free of grime and dirt.

Tip 6: Apply PrimerPrimer is very important when painting a metal

surface. In the absence of primer, the paint will not adhere to metal. Also, there are more chances of rust formation and peeling paint. Use a good qual-ity primer that is compatible with metal and the paint you plant to use.

Tip 7: Shake Can WellShake the paint sprayer well and ensure that the

paint is properly mixed up. Not doing so will cause uneven buildup of paint.

Tip 8: Apply a Test CoatBefore you apply paint on the metal object,

spray a couple of coats on a scrap test object. Use something like a piece of cardboard. Check whether the paint lands evenly.

Tip 9: Hold Can About 1 Foot Away from Object

It is important to hold the spray paint can at the proper distance from the object. Holding it too close will result in thick coats and overlap, whereas holding it too far will result in uneven coverage.

Tip 10: Spray in Thin Coats and Repeat if Necessary

Avoid applying thick coats of spray paint. You can achieve better coverage by applying thin coats and repeating the application till you achieve the desired results.

Sharon Fortier owner/operator shar’s private cleaning services Shar’s Tip of the Week

Professional helP with housework

The best way to reduce housework is, and always will, HELP. Some of us might be a little apprehensive about someone else dinging around in our dirt, but there’s no way around what a difference it can make. House work lasts minutes instead of hours, hours instead of days, a day instead of a week, when you take advantage of a little help.

Guidelines when seeking Help1. Find out how long they have been in

business. If its less than 2 years, I’d consider someone else.

2. Always ask for references and ask for a Police Background check. P.B. checks are only good for one year. Call other custom-ers, don’t just believe whats presented

3. Get proof of insurance. If an accident happens to the cleaner or to your premises, and they aren’t properly insured, you could be in some trouble. Make sure they have professional liability insurance.

4. Get a quote. Anyone who knows there business can tell you (almost to the penny)what something will cost before they start. Get it in writing and watch for guarentees.

5. Do they provide the supplies and tools or do you. You have to be careful with sup-plies you are not familiar with or tools and where they were used last.

6. Beware of companies you have not heard of, you do have a chance of getting a bad deal.

OFF THe sHeLF: news from sD&G County Librarysusan waLLwOrkCommunications & Marketing Librarian [email protected]

(613)-936–8777 ext. 226.

Public libraries, from Newfoundland and Labrador to SD&G, have been getting a bit of media coverage these last few months - and it’s not just about new library services and pro-gramming! Unfortunately, libraries are some-times faced with tough decisions - and it can all come down to what value a community places on library services!

The issue is libraries are not a “for profit” busi-ness, however they depend largely on use. The “success” is often rated by how many members there are, how many items are borrowed, and how many visitors they have. But the costs are covered through taxes, rather than charging an admission or a rental fee. So how do residents or communities show they value the library?

Of course, people should keep using the ser-vices they value, but they can also expand this. They can be advocates for the library - tell their family and friends about what the library offers,

or better yet, bring these people in to try out the services. As well, people can make sure their local representatives know they appreciate and need the library. The key is to spread the word!

Library professionals believe strongly in the need and benefit of public libraries. And we will always be advocates, but we cannot do it with-out the community’s help. There’s never been a better time to support your library!

The SD&G County Library is currently under-taking a membership drive. There are lots of prizes to be won!

A new application round is underway for Ontario Renovates, a popular home improve-ment program that assists low and moderate income families and seniors in Cornwall and the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry. Since the program launched in 2012, approximately 300 home-owners in Cornwall and SDG have received assistance.

Our caregivers should take a bow. Cornwall is one of the first, if not the first, municipalities in Ontario to designate itself a dementia-friend-ly community. City council voted last week to have all front-line municipal staff trained to deal with persons with dementia. The city will also identify municipal buildings as dementia-friendly offices. As a city where nearly 40 per cent of the population is grappling with a dementia diagnosis, or is caring from someone with the affliction, the news is being welcomed by experts.

Motorists are being urged to use caution around city construction sites this year - your license plate could be recorded. And you may get a visit from the police. Workers often take down the licence plate num-bers of offenders.

Akwesasne and Cornwall have officially signed a co-owners agreement for the harbour lands in the city.
