TEAM Kindred Raises More Than $17,000 For Lung Association
By Ronelle BrumleveMedical Safety and Administrative Clinical Consultant
Neither rain, sleet, snow, hail nor wind storms from Hurricane Ike can stop TEAM Kindred! The 2008 TREK to Shakertown was another one to remember. In spite of gale-force winds, TEAM Kindred rode a total of 935 miles and raised $17,746 for the fight against lung disease!
After a day of riding, Saturday evening was packed with a wonderful dinner of grilled burgers and fixins provided by Nancy Disser and Rick Brumleve at the Danville Pioneer Playhouse.
Once Sunday’s ride was complete, the team spent the afternoon touring Shakertown Village where they also enjoyed a delicious and authentic Shaker dinner, and an awesome breakfast the next morning.

TEAM Kindred Raises More Than $17,000 For Lung Association
TEAM Kindred was represented by 13 members this year, including these fine individuals: (top row, l-r) Mark Friedland, Teresa Hemm, Leah Bennett, and (bottom row, l-r), Tony Disser, Ronelle Brumleve, Kathy Markham, Bruce Markham and Joan Solley.
Many rode all three days. Ironically, many of the three-day riders arrived home to Louisville on Monday only to find that they would spend several days living like the original Shakers after a wind storm spawned by Hurricane Ike knocked out power in the city.
This may be another year that TEAM Kindred takes the prize for participation in this event from the American Lung Association!

One More Chance To Get Your Flu Shot
Kindred will sponsor a flu shot clinic Thursday, Oct. 23, 2 - 4p.m. in the conference center.
These shots are available all to Kindred employees and contractors for only $7, which is half the cost of what Kindred actually pays for the shots. In fact, if you compare the cost to Kroger at $25 or the health department at $30, it’s a great savings!
We do not take appointments; you just need to show up. Cash is fine, as are checks made out to Kindred Healthcare.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention describes the flu shot as an inactivated vaccine (containing a dead virus) that is given with a needle, usually in the arm. The flu shot is approved for use in people older than 6 months, including healthy people and people with chronic medical conditions.

This is not a “you have to be an artist and creative genius to win” kind of contest. We will provide the pumpkins, the tools, and each team of four will have five minutes to create their masterpiece. A little creativity may be helpful, but this is the kind of contest anyone can win! The prizes are nice, too!

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
By Jennie WilbournOutpatient Marketing LiaisonKindred Hospital Louisville
Kindred Hospitals of Louisville are encouraging all female Kindred employees to realize the benefits of good breast health by:
• obtaining regular mammography screenings starting at age 40 (at age 35 for those women with family history of breast cancer) • getting an annual clinical breast exam from your physician • performing monthly breast self exams
Mammography screening is still the best method for detecting breast cancer early. All our female employees and covered spouses/partners need to schedule annual mammograms, if appropriate. Routine screenings are covered at no cost to the participant under Kindred’s medical plan. Plan participants may take advantage of this benefit by contacting their personal physicians.

Kindred will not be responsible for the items brought in. We also ask that you not bring in any weapons.
