Main products

Multilayer ceramic capacitors

Since these products were introduced to the market in 1984, TAIYO YUDEN’s nickel-electrode multilayer ceramic capacitors have been at the forefront of the industry. We are actively developing high-end multilayer ceramic capacitors. Our products deliver the highest capacitance in the industry of 0.1μF with an ultra small capacitor in the 0402 size (0.4mm × 0.2mm × 0.2mm).

Recent trends in smartphones have seen greater functionality combined with higher performance, and yet the size is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. As the number of electronic components for use in these devices grows, manufacturers have been looking at ways to increase the density of internal circuit boards.

In order to meet such market needs, TAIYO YUDEN developed the embedded-parts multilayer wiring substrate Embedded Organic Module Involved Nanotechnology (EOMIN®). This solution refers to modules with a copper core in which components and semiconductors are embedded. By maximizing the characteristics of copper, this makes it possible to realize outstanding dissipation and rigidity. The copper core helps improve reception sensitivity in wireless communications by reducing radiation noise.

At TAIYO YUDEN, we are advancing research and development for passive parts such as capacitors, inductors and high-frequency devices to help optimize the EOMIN® module both in terms of the wiring substrate and parts.

Maximizing functionality in limited space— Satisfying conflicting needs

TAIYO YUDEN develops and produces devices driven by SAW/FBAR technologies as well as small-sized high-frequency modules in which SAW/FBAR devices are integrated.

SAW/FBAR devices are generally embedded in mobile network terminals such as smartphones. As mobile communications technology continues to evolve, manufacturers are required to incorporate advanced functionality into SAW/FBAR devices to ensure compatibility with GSM, UMTS, LTE and other communication standards, as well as for the different regional frequencies throughout the world, thereby allowing communication anywhere in the world.

TAIYO YUDEN develops SAW/FBAR devices that are smaller, thinner and that consume less power. This is driven by our ability to anticipate customer needs in product development and our unique elemental technologies, such as materials and fine processing technologies.

Main products

Wire-wound chip inductors

TAIYO YUDEN’s diverse product lineup of chip inductors helps resolve customers’ challenges through the combination of optimal materials and advanced elemental technology. Our wire-wound chip inductors have a simple structure that efficiently eliminates wasted space. This product also meets a wide range of circuit design requirements.

Multilayer ceramic capacitors

TAIYO YUDEN remains at the vanguard of the industry with a diverse lineup of multilayer ceramic capacitors such as high-capacitance types and ultra-small types as well as super-low-distortion types (CFCAPTM), medium-high voltage types and low-profile types.

Wireless devices

Included in this category are Bluetooth® and wireless LAN modules, as well as combo modules. We also supply a range of advanced GPS modules.

The market for multilayer ceramic capacitors continues to demand miniaturization and higher capacitance. TAIYO YUDEN conducts research and development driven by various technologies to meet these needs including material technology.

Multilayer ceramic capacitors are designed with a sandwich-type structure in which dielectric layers and internal electrodes are stacked alternately. Although increasing the number of layers increases the capacitance of the capacitor, it also increases its thickness. To resolve this dilemma, TAIYO YUDEN reduces the size of barium titanate particles, the material used for the dielectric layers, and controls each particle with an ideal, uniform shape. This enables the production of thinner dielectric layers, which allows further stacking, simultaneously realizing miniaturization and higher capacitance.

At present, the thickness of each layer in our multilayer ceramic capacitors is just 0.6μm* at the slimmest point, and the number of layers reaches 1,000 at maximum. *1μm (micrometer) = 1/1000mm

For smaller and thinner products— Unique technological expertise in materials

Polyacene capacitors, which are parts that charge and discharge electricity, were previously used primarily as alternatives to small batteries. In recent years, these capacitors have been applied to more markets such as PCs, mobile devices and toys due to their outstanding properties that include the ability to quickly charge and discharge a large electrical current despite their small size, the long life of the charge-discharge cycle and the fact that they do not incorporate any environmentally harmful substances.

TAIYO YUDEN produces a range of super capacitors, from backup to energy applications, including small, coin type, square type, cylinder type and thin type polyacene capacitors as well as cylinder type lithium ion capacitors. We are constantly developing products and overcoming issues in the energy field. We still continue to drive innovation and create products that meet the ever-changing requirements in the market.

TAIYO YUDEN has displayed strengths in technology and development since its earliest days. The history of the company cannot be separated from the history of advancements in the global electronics industry. Despite intense competition, we continue to grow together with our customers as a result of our unique approach and innovation. This, combined with our outstanding technical capabilities, makes TAIYO YUDEN a world leader in the electronics market.

TAIWAN TAIYO YUDEN at the time of its founding

Rutilcon HiK series

March 1950Hikohachi Sato establishes TAIYO YUDEN CO., LTD. in Suginami-ku, TokyoHikohachi Sato began researching ceramic materials before World War II. Based on the belief that product commercialization should start from the development of materials, he set about developing, commercializing and mass-producing barium titanate tubular ceramic capacitors. This laid the foundation for TAIYO YUDEN.

September 1950Commercializes barium titanate tubular ceramic capacitors and begins sales under the brand name RutilconTAIYO YUDEN used barium titanate in its capacitors on account of its high dielectric constant after a number of hurdles were cleared. Extensive efforts and numerous different paths were taken before Rutilcon capacitors were commercialized with an electrostatic capacity of 10,000pF, representing close to a double-digit increase in capacitance relative to conventional products.

September 1954Begins producing small ferrite coresTAIYO YUDEN accelerated the development of a small Intermediate Frequency Transformer (IFT) for use in transistor radios. The company’s technical team commercialized the product after focusing on nickel zinc ferrite as the component for the IFT. This product subsequently contributed to the development of transistor radios and televisions.

September 1964Establishes technical research laboratory in Haruna-machi, Gunma-gun, Gunma (currently in Takasaki-shi)Investments in R&D had been active in the electronics field since the mid-1950s. In 1960, after around 10 years in business, the company’s management policy adhered to bolstering research capabilities via establishing a new R&D structure featuring an independent research department.

1965Markets inductors (H Series) employing a uniquely developed ferrite coreUpon establishing material and production technologies for ferrite, TAIYO YUDEN then developed a coil (inductor) using ferrite produced by the company following a customer’s request. This became an area of comparative strength, with full-scale development and production carried out thereafter.

May 1967Establishes the first overseas subsidiary, TAIWAN TAIYO YUDEN CO., LTD.Around this time, production of such items as televisions and transistor radios as exports items was expanding, and in response to growing demand overseas, TAIYO YUDEN decided to construct a facility in Taiwan, where numerous major European and U.S. electronics manufacturers had already set up operations. Thereafter, the company started local production of tubular ceramic capacitors for IFTs.

March 1970Stock listed on Second Section of Tokyo Stock Exchange with an alternative listing on the First Section in 1973

July 1976Develops world’s first axial leaded ceramic capacitor Amid moves to conserve energy and electrical power after the first oil crisis in the mid-70s, electronics equipment makers began introducing automatic inserting machines for electronic components. Axial leaded ceramic capacitors were just the right size and shape for the machines. These components were widely used mainly in VTRs and audio equipment.

April 1977Commercializes axial leaded inductors In addition to capacitors, TAIYO YUDEN started to develop axial leaded type inductors as well. Since this product was not suited to the mass-production lines of existing items, TAIYO YUDEN developed suitable production machinery internally. Meanwhile, through a collaborative development project with machine makers, TAIYO YUDEN was able to overcome numerous hurdles, including the creation of a streamlined and integrated production line, which led to the successful commercialization of axial leaded inductors.

October 1977Develops world’s first tubular chip type ceramic capacitorIntegrating technologies amassed in the development of axial leaded ceramic capacitors and in long-established tubular ceramic capacitors for IFTs, TAIYO YUDEN developed the world’s first tubular chip type ceramic capacitor to meet the need for compact equipment and leadless components. It was primarily used in TV tuners.
