Santa Fe setscapital budget
Santa Fe Industries, Inc., will spendsome $272 million on equipment andimprovements for Santa Fe Railwaythis year, according to John S. Reed,chairman.
More than $148 million will be spenton equipment, including 55 new and125 remanufactured diesellocomotives, 50 freight cars and 25cabooses. Reed pointed out that a largecar acquisition program was not plan-ned because the present fleet couldhandle anticipated requirements.
Additional improvements for therailway call for the installation of 366miles of new and reconditioned railand a normal tie renewal program.Other plans include the expansion andimprovements to the piggyback anddiesel servicing facilities at several loca-tions.

CASO adoptsplan for U.S.liner industry
The Council of American-Flag ShipOperators (CASO) has adopted "Long Range Plan for the Liner In-dustry of the U.S. Merchant Marine"according to CASO’s president, Ad-miral J.L. Holloway, III, USN (Ret.).
The plan builds upon the "Programfor the Development of an EffectiveMaritime Strategy" proposed by Presi-dent Reagan.
The goals of the plan are:1. to carry not less than 40 percent of
the foreign liner trade of the Unit-ed States, providing efficient ser-vice to shippers at rates com-petitive with foreign flags; and,
2. to provide a U.S.-flag liner fleetwhich can fulfill the military sea-lift requirement of U.S. defenseplans.
Attainment of these goals would re-quire the expansion of the U.S. linerfleet from the current 250 ships toabout 325 ships.
Admiral Holloway emphasized thatcarrying out this industry plan "will re-quire little, if any outlay of govern-ment funds - in fact, many of the pro-posals would result in overall savings."
