POL Revamps Servicefrom U.S. to Europe

Polish Ocean Lines (POL) hasmade some changes in its NorthAmerica-to-Europe service, havingreached a space sharing agreementwith Atlantic Container Line andMediterranean Shipping Co.

The North Atlantic service hasbeen expanded to include weeklydirect calls at Boston and Ports-mouth. The carrier also has in-creased its direct service fromBaltimore and New York to twiceweekly. The new calls were sched-uled to begin the first week in July.Gulf Service

POL also offers a South Atlantic andGulf Service with direct calls at Hous-ton, Charleston, Miami and Savannah.

"Circumstances in the interna-tional transportation industry re-quire cooperation among com-petitors to ensure the viability ofalternatives for shippers on bothsides of the Atlantic," says Barry In-dig, vice president of sales and mar-keting for Gdynia America Line, whichis POL’s North American general agent."We see this arrangement with ACLand Mediterranean Shipping as anecessary step in this process."Customers Benefit

"POL’s customers will benefitfrom this arrangement becausedirect call ports have been added, transit times reduced and frequencyof sailings increased."

The revisions have necessitatedchanges in stevedoring locations insome ports and the addition ofothers not previously served byPOL. However, the line will con-tinue to use the Port of HoustonAuthority’s Fentress Bracewell Bar-bours Cut Container Terminal forits service from Houston.
