Reflections on the Readings

“Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.”

This Sunday as we listen to the beginning of the Gospel of Mark

proclaimed, we hear the echo of the prophet Isaiah telling us to get our

stuff together. Well, maybe not exactly in those terms, but there is truth there perhaps. What exactly does it mean to

“make straight his paths” then?

John, portrayed as the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy, is the one who is out in the desert crying “Prepare!” He is the messenger leading the way, helping to show us how to take the appropriate actions for the coming of the Lord. John also definitely makes a pointed effort to explain that one who is mightier than he, will be coming after him, and that John is a simple and lowly servant before Him. So how exactly can we prepare and make our paths straight again? If you follow the example of the multitudes in the gospel passage flocking to the Jordan River to be baptized by John the Baptist, we might gain a better understanding of how to do that. John was baptizing people with water as they acknowledged their sins and he proclaimed a baptism of re-pentance for the forgiveness of sins…hmm. So people were actually talking about their sins and looking to be forgiven and seek repentance? Where else does this happen? Maybe you’ve seen it in your church bulletin, or heard in the announcements at the end/beginning of Mass about Advent Penance Services happening at your church or in the local area? ’Tis the season. It seems like there is definitely a connection between the timing of these parish events and where Mark’s gospel is leading us this weekend. It’s hard to imagine a more effective way to get your path back on the straight and narrow than a great confession experience. En-joy the grace of your baptism again as you are forgiven in the name of the Father, the Son, AND the Holy Spirit. Whether it’s been two days, two months, or two years since your last reconciliation, be encouraged to seek out the saving mercy and grace of Jesus in that precious sacrament. “Prepare the way!” Source: anygivensundayproject.org Contributors: Adam & Lori Ubowski

Corpus Christi Parish Advent Communal Penance Service

Additional confessors will be on hand.

Reconciliation is what God does. Receiving it and celebrating it is what we do. For those of us who are Catholics, the Sacrament of Reconciliation is a most natural way to celebrate God's reconcilia-tion. We used to think of this sacrament as only about "confession" - that it was like a dumping ground for my sins, where I got forgiven, and I had to "pay a toll." One of the great recoveries in our Christian history is to re-discover the meaning of this sacrament.

It is God who forgives sins. And God forgives us the very moment that we come to the experience that we need forgiveness (which itself comes through God's grace). At that moment, I feel sorrow and a desire for forgiveness and healing. In that moment, I am reconciled with God. The reunion, the bond, the connection, the joy are all there. Three more things remain: to receive it deep within my heart, to celebrate it, and to participate in the healing process.

When I experience God's forgiveness and love, I am invited to savor it and let it touch me deeply. Experiencing compassion, patience, understanding, and forgiveness is itself transforming. If I fail to appreciate what I have just received - freely and undeserved - then I will take it for granted and risk moving on without a real healing happening.

"Advent Communal Celebration of the Sacrament of Reconcilia-tion" is a wonderful opportunity to join our sisters and brother in ask-ing for forgiveness and healing during this important time of the year.

May our Lord grant us all the gift of reconciliation, and may we all receive it and celebrate it well in the holy days ahead.

Ways to Celebrate Advent at Home

Advent offers unique and beautiful opportunities to make family memories in the home. The traditions of this season allow Catholics to practice our faith more deeply and with greater attention and intent. Here are some simple ideas to celebrate a faith-filled Advent . Use Christmas Cards as Prayer Reminders: As Christmas cards arrive during December, place them in a basket in a noticeable area. Once a day, pull out one card and pray for that person or family together. Keep the Christmas card basket out all year and pray regularly for other families. You may want to write the person a note signed by your family that says, "We prayed for you today."

Christ Is Welcome! Each time you turn on a light during Advent, say “Christ is welcome in our home.” When you turn on your tree lights say, “Jesus is the light of the world!” Children love the repetition, and they learn from it. Christmas Book Basket: Individually wrap 25 Christmas books and place them in a basket near your tree. At the beginning of December, a child picks a “present” from the basket, unwraps it, and then read it together. Siblings take turns choosing the “present.” for added atmos-phere read the book at night by flashlight as you lie next to the Christmas tree. If you only have 7 books, then begin 7 days before Christ-mas. Happy Birthday Jesus Party: Send invitations to a birthday party for Jesus. Ask each child to bring a new or gently used baby gift to pre-sent to baby Jesus. Each child can present his/her gift to Baby Jesus at the nativity scene as Christmas music plays softly in background. Let each child unwrap a present for Jesus, then afterwards, the hostess takes the baby gifts to a local Crisis Pregnancy Center. Serve cup-cakes or a birthday cake. Give children a candle on their cupcake, light the candles, and turn out the lights to sing Happy Birthday to Jesus. Read the story of Jesus in Luke 2: 1-16. The Second Sunday Of Advent December 10, 2017

St. Lucy’s Feast Day: Celebrate with Lights and Sweets!

December 13th is the feast day of St. Lucy.

St. Lucy was a virgin martyr during the earliest centuries

of Christianity under its worst persecution at the

hands of the Roman Empire, therefore making

her one of the most glorious saints in heaven. She is of such renown that she is one of the saints men-tioned by name in the Roman Canon of the Mass,

one of only seven female saints listed. Lucia means “light,” a fitting name for a young wom-an who was known to visibly glow and radiate in her love for her spouse, Jesus Christ. Falling during the Advent season—and thus a long, dark winter—there are many beautiful traditions associating this saint with the meaning of her name, the story of her life, and her glorious position in heaven. Her feast day is celebrated with candles, torches, and even bonfires. In some Catholic cultures (especially in Scandina-via) it’s common to have a Mass procession on St. Lucy’s feast day with young girls carrying candles, with the lead girl wearing a wreath of lights. Tradition holds that St. Lucy would wear a wreath of candles on her head so she could see better, her arms full of supplies, as she served the poor Chris-tians hiding from persecution in the dark under-ground catacombs. It is a big tradition for the oldest girl in the family to dress in a white garment with a red sash (symbolizing martyrdom) with a St. Lucy crown on her head. She wakes up early and brings her family members sweet rolls (or ‘Lucia buns’) to their bed.

The preparations are in place, the excitement mounts, and for those who are journeying to families arrangements are

finalized, clothes sorted, gifts wrapped and labelled. Two thousand years ago and more, a pregnant girl called Mary visited her cousin Elizabeth who was also expecting. As soon as they greeted each other, the baby in Elizabeth's womb kicked

out, and she interpreted this as a sign from God that Mary was greatly blessed, because she believed that all God had prom-

ised would be fulfilled in her life. Father God, when we consider your servant Mary, what we see is a humility and obedience that is so often lacking in our own

lives. As we hear your Word again, and consider the one through whose body you entered this world, remind us of the

meaning of humility and grant us a confidence of faith that knows your promises to us are always fulfilled.

Shepherd of Israel

Almighty and ever-living God, you are the source of all consolation and font of our salvation. You have saved your people from the wilderness, gathered them like lambs into your bosom, and fed them with a mother’s care. Make level within us all that sin has made rugged; take the crooked paths of our hearts and make them straight. May our repentant hearts turn to you and, at the coming of your Son, be found eager to welcome him so that, in joyful celebration, your chosen people can say, “Here is your God!” Through Christ our Lord © 2017 Liturgy Training Publications; 800-933-1800. A New Heaven and Earth

Today’s Readings: Today’s Readings: Isaiah 40:1–5, 9–11; Psalm 85:9–10, 11–12, 13–14; 2 Peter 3:8–14; Mark 1:1– 8

During this second week of Advent, we reflect on the future God has in store for us. When we delve more deeply into the Scriptures, it becomes clear that Advent is not as simple as we may think. Last week’s readings urged us to be watchful and to ready ourselves for Christ’s coming. This is not easy; it requires attention to God’s Word within us. This week’s message is in the same vein.

The prophet Isaiah paints a beautiful picture for the Israelites who are in captivity. Salvation will come, and the Lord will forgive all their sins. The image is radical. Isaiah depicts mountains being leveled and valleys being filled. He directs Zion to tell this Good News to the entire world. A similar theme is in the Gospel. John the Baptist is the herald of the coming Messiah. John calls all creation to repent and seek God’s forgiveness. He is the herald who paves the way for Jesus, the one who reveals the new heaven and earth, which Peter speaks of in the Second Reading.

What does it look like to prepare our hearts and minds for the coming of Christ? It takes a vulnera-ble and watchful heart. We can find ourselves held captive. When we seek God’s forgiveness with contrite hearts, we open ourselves to an amazing grace. God’s mercy is the wellspring of all healing. So let us act out our salvation in the ways we live and announce the triumphant entry of the coming Christ

This Week At Home

Today’s Gospel concludes with the phrase, “We have seen strange things today.” As we begin the second

week of Advent, it is important to recall the marvelous things our God has done for us in Jesus Christ. Through

his Paschal Mystery, we are saved from death and share in eternal life. Jesus comes to heal or liberate us from all that paralyzes us and that keeps us from living the Good News. What incredible things have you seen? Around the Advent wreath, share ways you have been

saved by God.

Today’s Readings: Isaiah 35:1–10; Psalm 85:9ab and 10, 11–12, 13–14; Luke 5:17–26.

Mary’s message is one of hope and assurance. Appearing as a pregnant woman, she reveals that

the child she carries will free the poor and oppressed. In the second option for the Gospel,

John, who is in Elizabeth’s womb, leaps with joy as Mary greets Elizabeth. Consider the times you have

leapt with joy when you encountered Christ

Today’s Readings: Zechariah 2:14–17 or Revelation 11:19a; 12:1–6a, 10ab; Judith 13:18bcde, 19; Luke

1:26–38 or Luke 1:39–47.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells those who are burdened to come to him so they can find rest. Jesus is explain-

ing to the crowds that he is the new law (yoke); to gain wisdom is to learn from him and follow him. St. Lucy, whom we honor today, understood this invita-

tion. Lucy heeded Jesus’ call and found rest/life with him. Take time today to research Lucy and the tradi-

tions surrounding her feast; for example, bake braided bread

Today’s Readings: Isaiah 40:25–31; Psalm 103:1–2, 3–4, 8 and 10; Matthew 11:28–3

The psalm refrain today tells us that God is gracious, merciful, slow to anger, and kind. It recalls God’s saving

deeds when he rescued his people from exile and slavery. It is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving to tell of the faithfulness of God. The psalmist wants to tell everyone of God’s Kingdom. In the Gospel, those who oppose John’s message and eventually Jesus’ message

are attacking God’s Kingdom. Advent calls us to announce the coming of God’s Reign. Write a poem of

thanksgiving today and be mindful of God’s infinite love and mercy.

Today’s Readings: Isaiah 41:13–20; Psalm 145:1 and 9,

10–1, 12–13ab; Matthew 11:11–15.

We are invited in today’s readings to contemplate the Wisdom tradition in the Scriptures. Those who follow the Christ are taught the right path. They live in the

light. Listening to the voice of Wisdom brings the full-ness of life. Take time to listen to Christ’s voice.

Reconnect with a wisdom figure in your life.

Today’s Readings: Isaiah 48:17–19; Psalm 1:1–2, 3, 4 and 6; Matthew 11:16–19.

Today’s readings connect back to the readings from Thursday. John the Baptist, like Elijah, has announced the coming Reign of God, but some did not recognize

him. It can be easy to miss what is in plain sight. Jesus also tells his disciples that he will suffer. Whom do you recognize as one who announces the coming of Christ? Let the refrain of the psalm be your prayer today so

that we might see the living God and be saved.
