.EXPLANATORY NOTE.

The correspondence of which au English text followa wasexchanged in Arabic.

This .English text is based upon the original drafts in English ofthe letters sent by Sir Henry McMahon and the contemporarytranslations into English of the letters received, by Sir HenryMcMahon,

The language of some of the original drafts or contemporarytranslations has, however, been modified in certain places where thelanguage has been criticised on the ground that it does not reproduceaccurately the Arabic of the actual correspondence and the criticismhas been found on examination to be justified.

The text printed in the following pages is the revised text whichresults from these modifications. Except where otherwise stated, thefoot-notes indicate the text as it stood before the modifications wereintroduced.

His Majesty's Government have been advised in this matter byMr. J. Hey worth--.Dunne, Senior Lecturer in Arabic at the School ofOriental Studies, University of London,
