This is one of those !-knew-you-when letters to express my admiration for your taking your new job, and my belief that you will do well in it.

As you can see by the above, somewhat over-expansive letterhead (my Egyptian honcho's idea, apparently believing I needed a more prestigious title to cut through governmental red-tape), even this old hand has departed Southeast Asia-­after almost ten years there for The Times.

I can barely imagine the pressure you will face in the post-Watergate atmosphere. I had just a brief taste of it when, just out of a hospital in SanFrancisco, I acted as family spokesman when the Rusk's daughter !eggy married Guy Smith in 1967. That mixed marriage, incidentally, has worked out well.

I've been a bit more understan~ing with spokesmen for everybody ever since.

':'Annual income is gross remuneration received under any AFTRA individual station and network agreement including income earned under any National Code. Annual income takes into account all TV and radio earnings including base salary (or guar·antee), overtime, and all fees as well as compensation from advertising agencies and independent producers.

Income must be included even though the artist is working for over scale, even though the AFTRA contract docs not stipulate his rate of pay, even though he does some of his work out of town. The criterion is this: if you must be an AFTRA member to do the work, then all income from that source is included in computing your dues bracket.

Unemployed persons whose INITIATION IS COMPLETELY PAID and who have been active members in AFTRA for one year may request an Honorable Withdrawal Card .

By now you're already an old-timer on the job, but anyway - congratulations on the new position. This may sound like a stuck record, but it will be a relief to have the Press Office run as a press office again, instead of a censor bureau.

I've only been with the Geographic 20 years, so I can't speak for all time, but the only time in anybody' s memory that we had a complete breakdown in communication with the presidency was in the former administration.

In retrospect, I guess we were just lucky.

Is Dave Kennerly still shooting pictures around there for your office?

It's nice to see that the new administration has such good taste in hiring old comrades-at-arms.

I'm languishing along toward the end of a brief tour as the Unipress manager for ?'0 Million starving subcontinentals. Jfter 18 months of it I'm no longer able to say with any real feeling that it's better here than in Philadelphia.

But they are due to give me Southeast Asia around year's end and let me go back pome to God 1 s country, basing in Singapore.

Tony Clifton comes to see me once in awhile. Likewise Dan Southerland. Jack Foisie has gone off to live in Cairo. Horst Faas and I went up to cover the coronation of the new King of Bhutan a few months back.

Come see us one of these days. And if things go sour on the oth&r side of the fence you can always ieu Hoi.

We were an quite thrilled and excited to hear the news of Ron's appointment as Presidential Press Secretary. I had been kiddingly suggesting this might happen ever since we saw Ron interviewing President Ford outside of his house the night before the fateful resignation.

We an want to wish you the best of luck and success in your new job. We know that you witt handle thejob with a great deal of responsibility and witt continue to make us an as proud of you as we are now.

I think the proudest one in the house is Beth after having had such a pleasant visit with you last February.. I am taking Edie and the children to Washington for the National Association of Mutual Insurance Agents Convention in October. We will be arriving on October 18th and witt be leaving the morning of the 24th. We have already contacted your mother and we hope very much we will have the opportunity to meet Cindy and to possibly see you (we know how busy President Ford is going to keep you).
