Letter from our Minister Dear Friends

Often people know a good few months in advance where they will be going for their summer holi-

days, and if their destination is overseas in a sunny climate, light clothes can be packed, along

with sun lotion and sun hats, and we can be fairly sure we’ll not freeze. But for holidays at home,

in the UK or Ireland, a greater variety of clothes for warmer and cooler weather is needed, sun

hats and waterproofs both making it into our suitcases. We know that many activities stop for

the summer months, and many people have more time on their hands, along with longer, lighter

nights to go for walks, or sit outside and enjoy the warmer evenings. And we are often keen to

make the most of the short summer months because before we know it the air is turning colder,

the leaves are turning brown and we are digging out our winter woollies once more, back to fa-miliar weather and shorter days.

But this year there is much more, apart from the weather, that we are unsure of – a surprise

general election in June, with policies to make us think, offered to make us strong and stable, to

give us a stronger hand in dealing with the Brexit negotiations, which may or may not lead to a

second referendum on Scottish independence. There is uncertainty beyond Europe too – the mi-

grant crisis hasn’t gone away, and there are rumblings of war in various places around the world.

Uncertainty dogs us at home and further afield, and the summer months, rather than being a

time for many of rest and relaxation, promise continued dis-ease and uncertainty and worry.

When the disciples were expressing their worries, Jesus asked them to consider the lilies, how

they grew despite the worry and lack of clarity the world was facing. That advice could be seen

as escapist – turning a blind eye to the needs of the world, and hoping all the worries would go away. But Jesus ended his phrase by reminding the disciples to seek the kingdom of God, and

‘these things shall be yours as well.’ Seeking the kingdom of God meant actively working to-

wards fulfilling God’s word – sharing, healing, seeking understanding, forgiving, loving, ways of

life which are far from easy, and yet, if everyone lived by the same values, the things the disci-

ples worried about would hold no worry at all – each would have enough to eat, clothes to cover

them, shelter to keep them warm, the knowledge of love and the invitation to be loving. The lil-

ies which grew so easily, had little to concern them as everything they needed to grow was pro-

vided for them – sun, rain, and good soil. So, far from being a statement of escape and other-

worldliness, Jesus was asking his disciples to do what had been asked of them by loving God and

loving their neighbour, and what they needed would be given and received and enjoyed, by them

and their neighbours.

May this summer bring us rest and relaxation, the enjoyment of nature

and beauty, but may it also bring us a renewed call to seek the kingdom

of God, and the care, safety and aid that brings us all.

Corstorphine Community Sight Loss Group

As someone who has recently become partially sighted and an RNIB Volunteer, I am looking to reach

out to others with sight loss in the Corstorphine community to form a group who could meet monthly,

for social reasons and to share experiences!

A first meeting has been arranged on Saturday 22nd July, 2-4pm at The Corstorphine Trust and

Heritage Centre in St Margaret’s Park, Corstorphine High Street {next to the putting green}. Entry

is round the back of the building where there is also parking and disabled parking.

I do hope you will join us for some chat, coffee/tea and some home baking. A friend, family member,

guide dog or carer is very welcome too.

If you or someone you know may be interested in joining us, then please get in touch as detailed be-

low.

"Why?" Over the summer when you are resting and in a thoughtful mood, why don't you consider the fol-

lowing WHY'S and see if you can come up with an answer?

1. If people evolved from apes - WHY are there still apes?

2. WHY is it that no matter what colour bubble bath you use, the bubbles remain white?

3. WHY is it that no plastic bag will ever open from the end you try first?

4. WHY is it that whenever you attempt to catch something that's falling off

the table you always manage to knock something else off?

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?
