WARREN COUNTY EXTENSION
May 15th– Are you Ready?
4-H HORIZON ~ May 2016
Are you exhibiting animals at the Warren County Fair? All members who
show animals (except horses and dogs) are required to be Food Safety
Quality Assurance Certified (FSQA) by May 15th. Depending on the grades
of the members they could test or train. 4-6th graders who trained were
able to learn the importance of ethics. They also learned how important it
is to know about feed and feed additives. They learned this by creating
their own “feed” and seeing how closely it looked (or didn’t look) to the
recipe. They also discovered how quickly diseases could spread and the
important role that biosecurity plays to keep animals safe.
Warren County Fair Update New this year: All 4-H and FFA Members will only be charged $5.00 to attend an event in the grand stand during the
Warren County Fair when wearing an official exhibiting shirt.
Hopefully you know how important it is to identify your
animal properly by May 15th. However, do you know what
that means? It seems simple, but it could mean the
difference between a fun fair and not being able to exhibit
your animal at the fair. For dogs, not only is information
needed in 4hOnline, but also a photo and vaccination/rabies
certificate. You also should attend some training sessions
(see next page). Horses need information in 4hOnline and
to upload four photos. You need to attend at least two
training nights (or be in active lessons with a signed waiver).
Swine need information in 4hOnline as well as forms that
need to be turned in to the fair board secretary both by May
15th. The swine ear-notch and the Warren County Produced
forms can be picked up and returned to the Fair board Sec-
retary at 701 West 2nd Avenue, Indianola. Breeding Beef
needs to have breed, birthdate, and tattoo in 4hOnline that
matches the registration papers (crossbred also needs
tattoo). If already ID’d as a Market Heifer please make sure
the three items listed above have been added to 4hOnline. Market Beef (already weighed in and ID’d in January)
require a weight, ear tag, and breed. Market heifers do not
require breed as they are shown by weight.
The information you see in 4hOnline is the information I
take out. If you have any questions, you may call 961-6237,
email [email protected] or attend a come-and-go
opportunity on May 5th from 8:30am-8pm (4:30-8:00 upon
appointment) to ID your animals. This is an opportunity for
those of you who would like assistance in ID’ing your
animals or who have specific questions. You may also
contact me during office on other days. Please do not wait
until the last minute. ID your animals now so that you don’t
forget and any questions you have can be answered PRIOR
TO MAY 15TH!
