I have been writing about the beauty and aesthetics industry for almost a decade now and so, as you may imagine, I have tried out a huge array of products. I have also become very popular with my friends and family who also benefit from me being editor of a magazine where high-end skincare samples are a perk of the job. But never have I had such a strong reaction to a product range from my friends as with the new Skin Active range from NeoStrata® and, more specifically, one product, – Intensive Eye Therapy.

The Intensive Eye Therapy product is designed to build and plump the layers of delicate skin around the eye so that the eye area appears more lifted and crow’s feet are smoothed. Caffeine helps deflate puffiness while apple Stem Cell Extract preserves youthful look and vitality of skin by causing old cells to behave like younger cells and boosting collagen production. Peptides stimulate matrix components to produce more collagen and NeoGlucosamine™, a non-acid proprietary amino acid, reinforces collagen’s surrounding support structure and enhances cell turn over to exfoliate existing pigmented spots and inhibits the production of melanin. I went to the launch of the Skin Active range in London a few weeks ago and walked away with a goodie bag containing a selection of the new products. Unfortunately for me, but fortunately for my nearest and dearest, the range is specifically designed for more mature skin and, being under 40, I was not a suitable candidate for it.

I gave a couple of the products to my mum but decided I would bestow the Intensive Eye Therapy on a male friend of mine who, as he approaches his 45th birthday, has been increasingly concerned about the wrinkles, lines and bags around his eyes. This guy is the most unlikely candidate for skincare you can imagine. A used car salesman, and avid sun worshiper, his idea of skincare is washing his ‘boat race’ in the shower. But as I knew he was worried about his eyes (and was even considering surgery) I thought he would be the perfect person to try it out, and I was not wrong! A few days after using the product I got a call to say he could not believe the difference and when I saw him a week later neither could I. Now three weeks in the difference is really noticeable. The skin around his eyes is smoother and less wrinkled and the bags have reduced. He is delighted!

My second happy customer came after the Cosmetic News Expo when I procured some more of the product for a female friend of mine who is approaching 50 and is also a sun worshiper and regular sunbed user (tut tut). A few days later I get a text from her saying “OMG you need to see my face, I have been using that NeoStrata® sample you gave me’” I thought something was wrong but she replied saying it was “nothing short of miraculous” and she literally had ‘neo strata’ (new skin). With these kind of rave reviews I thought it would be pertinent to chose the product as my editor’s choice this month even though I have not used it myself.

death of Baroness is tragic loss for industry

The chair of the Treatments You Can Trust Governance Group,

Baroness Ritchie of Brompton, has sadly passed away at the age of 66

after a private battle with illness.

The Baroness, a formidable figure in local and national government, was

a driving force behind the register which was set up to improve patient

safety. She died on April 24. A long-serving Kensington and Chelsea

Councillor, Baroness Ritchie also masterminded David Cameron’s campaign

for more women Conservative MPs and was chairman of the LGA’s

Children and Young People Board for two years. The Governance Group for

Treatments You Can Trust - the Independent Healthcare Advisory Services

(IHAS) Register of Injectable Cosmetic Providers - was established to ensure

patient safety and drive up standards in the field of injectable cosmetic

treatments. Baroness Ritchie’s ongoing commitment as champion for

disadvantaged women and in health related advocacy meant she was

well placed to lead the group which safeguards consumers seeking out

cosmetic injectable treatments in a largely female dominated market. Sally

Taber, director of the IHAS, said, “Baroness Ritchie will be greatly missed,

and, as chair of the Governance Board, played an instrumental role in

determining the success of www.TreatmentsYouCanTrust.org.uk. She will

be remembered for her longstanding commitment to ensuring patients are

greeted with the best standard and a champion of improvements to public

health, particularly for women.”

Cosmetic News will be honouring Baroness Ritchie at the Aesthetic Awards

on December 1 by naming the Services to the Industry Award after her.

Baroness Ritchie speaking at the TreatmentsYouCanTrust Parliamentary reception at the House of Lords earlier this year

new Research suggests PiP implant failures significantly higher than Previously thoughtNew research published in the Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery suggests that the failure rate of silicone breast implants manufactured by Poly Implant

Prosthèse (PIP) could be as high as 33.8%.

Patients who received PIP implants either for primary or secondary breast augmentation,

between January 2000 and August 2005, were studied to determine implant failure rate and

other complications. Results found that seven to 12 years after implantation the failure rate for

PIP implants is in the region of 15.9–33.8%.

“Previous studies have typically reported failure rates of between 2% and 5%and these estimates

have been based on secondary data. In this study, all participants were scanned by ultrasound,

which provides conclusive indication of rupture, rather than clinical examination which is

typically used. Most previous studies were based on multiple surgeon, multiple technique, with a

relatively small number of patients and shorter follow up time span”, commented Mr Jan Stanek,

lead author of the study.

Concerns about the durability of PIP silicone breast implants have been expressed for several years

prior to their formal withdrawal from the UK market in March 2010. Although precise details of

what elements were at fault remain unclear, concerns have been raised about both the elastomer

(the outer cover of the implant) and the filler gel.

In this study PIP implants were used by the plastic surgeon for both primary and secondary breast

augmentation. A database of patients was constructed of each patient offering a free consultation

and referral for ultrasound scan. Chief outcome measures included secondary surgery, implant

rupture rate and time to rupture. 453 patients with PIP devices were identified. Of this number,

30 had already undergone implant exchange for a variety of reasons. 180 (39.7%) could not be

contacted and 19 had undergone implant removal elsewhere. Of those who could be contacted,

47 declined consultation as they had no concerns. 97 had neither clinical signs nor radiographic

evidence of implant rupture and elected to remain under regular review. At the time of writing, 38

had undergone implant exchange after ultrasonographic indication of rupture.

Based on these results, if the group of non-responders had no ruptures, the overall rupture rate

would be 15.9%. However, it the non-responders had the same rupture rate as those examined in

the study, the overall rupture rate would be 33.8%.

Mr Stanek indicates that all PIP implants, due to the high rupture rate and uncertainty about the

nature of the silicone gel, may need to be removed. Those patients with ruptured implants will have

to have them removed; those with no evidence of rupture will need to be monitored on a regular

basis. Further research into the nature of the elastomer and gel filler will determine whether all PIP

implants should be explanted in the future.

code-afa reveals new multi-discipline advisory Board team

Experienced professionals from the dental and medical sectors and key industry

commentators, including Cosmetic News editor Vicky Eldridge, are among members of the new

Board for CODE The Association for Facial Aesthetics (CODE-AFA).

Martin Mackenzie, who took over as Chief Executive of the organisation in March, has revealed CODE-

AFA’s new board line-up as part of exciting plans to re-invigorate CODE-AFA for its members.

“I’m delighted to announce my new team,” says Martin. “Each Advisory Board member will bring a

specific area of expertise that, when brought together, can speak for the broad range of medical

professionals and practice owners that make up our membership. I would like to welcome Dr John

Quinn (Q-Clinics, Bristol) and Dr Beatriz Molina (Medikas, Somerset), both full time doctors in cosmetic

medicine. Representing dentists, I am very pleased to welcome Dr Tim Eldridge (MyFace Dentistry and

Facial Aesthetics, Cheltenham) and Pam Cushing, medical nurse and independent nurse prescriber

(with her own Medi-Spa in Norwich). Finally I am delighted to welcome Vicky Eldridge to the team.

surgeons welcome PiP report and renew call for implant register The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons has

welcomed the Government’s review into the PIP scandal

and agrees with its recommendations that more stringent

criteria should be required into monitoring medical

devices. The BAAPS has also reiterated its previous calls for

a compulsory implant register, mandatory safety audits for

all practitioners and mystery shopping-type surveillance.

According to consultant plastic surgeon and BAAPS

President-Elect Rajiv Grover, “We welcome the findings of

the Government’s review into the PIP scandal, and agree in

particular that there should be a better system of reporting

for medical devices, with data gathered from a wider set of

sources that should be routinely reviewed. For the last few

years, the BAAPS has been championing the reinstatement

of a compulsory implant register that would monitor not just

breast but all types of implant put into the body. The register

is part of our regulation proposals put forward earlier this year

and would immediately address all the recommendations put

forward in this report, as would a mandatory safety audit based

on the model that the BAAPS requires of all its members.”

According to consultant plastic surgeon and BAAPS President

Fazel Fatah, “Poor post-marketing surveillance of medical

devices lies at the root of the PIP crisis. At the BAAPS we feel

there needs to be significantly more stringent monitoring of

all medical devices including breast implants and all cosmetic

injectables, via compulsory, regular reporting of adverse effects

and mystery shopping which are all part of our regulation

proposals. This is an opportunity for the Department of Health

to get it right, and put the necessary systems and checks in

place to avoid a repeat fiasco. Clearly changes are also needed

at European level of the CE marking process.”

liposuction interest on whatclinic.com soars by 93% There has been an unprecedented surge

in interest in liposuction in the UK.

According to data from WhatClinic.com, a

worldwide search engine for medical clinics

and services, 93% more UK consumers

researched the treatment on their website

in the past year than during the preceding

12 months, making liposuction one of the

fastest growing cosmetic surgery treatments

in the UK. Interest in the treatment outpaced

the average growth by a massive 26%.

WhatClinic.com’s data also shows exceptional interest in Birmingham and Glasgow for the

procedure, with each city responsible for 9% of the yearly enquiries made. There are 27 clinics

offering liposuction on WhatClinic.com based in Birmingham and 16 based in Glasgow.

Caelen King, CEO of WhatClinic.com said, “While our research shows an exceptional increase in

interest, we would stress that liposuction isn’t an easy solution to weight loss. A healthy diet and

regular exercise are still the safest and most effective ways for people to lose any excess weight.

For patients who are enquiring about liposuction, we recommend researching the procedure

thoroughly and discussing your treatment options with your doctor or surgeon.”

As well as running a successful and beautiful clinic, Helena is consultant editor of the Journal of

Aesthetic Nursing and she is the only nurse practitioner in Scotland to hold a Post Graduate Diploma

in Aesthetic Medicine as well as working towards the prestigious Master’s Degree in Cosmetic

Medicine at Greenwich University.” The first training dates in Edinburgh are August 4-5 for new uses

of botulinum toxin and fillers.

site focuses on internet marketing and education for UK based medical

university launches cosmetic degreeA UK university is launching a new degree course for surgeons with the aim of improving

the safety of cosmetic procedures. Anglia Ruskin University says it hopes the qualification

will put an end to ‘have-a-go surgeons’ and deter Brits from travelling abroad for surgery.

But some plastic surgeons say the new MSc course is an unnecessary addition.

All UK-qualified plastic surgeons complete Royal College of Surgeons-approved training to do

NHS work. But Professor James Frame, a surgeon at the university who will help run the new

‘hands-on’ practice-based plastic surgery course, says some newly qualified plastic surgeons still

lack expertise and do not have enough experience to carry out cosmetic work. This is because

cosmetic surgery is typically carried out in private practice rather than on the NHS.

Speaking to BBC News, Professor Frame said, “Aesthetic plastic surgery is a rapidly enlarging

super-speciality that requires recognition in its own right. At present a newly qualified, fully-

accredited plastic surgeon is released, totally lacking any experience in aesthetic plastic surgery,

and is able to operate in the private sector. Many surgeons complete their training and, unable

to find work in the NHS, have no option but to turn to private groups without that experience.”

The course, which begins in September 2012, is open to all accredited plastic surgeons based in

the UK. And overseas plastic surgeons will be able to apply to study for the MSc from 2013.

The Cosmetic News Expo is the UK’s only free of charge trade exhibition for the aesthetics industry, offering aesthetic professionals the chance to find out about the latest

technologies and products on the market and network with key manufacturers and suppliers, all under one roof. The event was attended by cosmetic doctors, aesthetic nurses, dermatologists, plastic surgeons, cosmetic dentists, aestheticians and practice managers from across the UK and was supported by the country’s leading manufacturers and suppliers including Q-Med, a Galderma Division (Platinum Sponsors), SkinCeuticals and La Roche-Posay (Gold Sponsors), Syneron Candela (Silver Sponsor) and BioTherapeutic (Hospitality Sponsor). Running alongside the exhibition, as always, was the Cosmetic News Conference which saw hundreds of delegates flocking to the venue to be a part of the packed CPD accredited educational programme (see page 24). Cosmetic News publisher Charlotte Body was delighted with the success of the event. She said, “This is the third year we have held the Cosmetic News Expo and it continues to go

from strength to strength. The conference programme was very strong this year and the number of quality exhibitors we had showcasing their products and treatments attracted a record numbers of visitors. I would like to thank our exhibitors and, in particular, our sponsors, for their ongoing support as well as the delegates and visitors who helped to make the event another outstanding success.” Julian Popple from Q-Med/Galderma said, “Q-Med/Galderma were delighted to be Platinum Sponsors at the premier event for the industry, the Cosmetic News Expo a great day was had by all.”Michaela Barker from Syneron Candela said “Syneron Candela were pleased to be involved in CN Expo 2012. Here is a round up of who our exhibitors were and what they were showcasing at the event…

Q-MED, A GALDERMA DIVISION (PLATINUM SPONSORS)

For Platinum Sponsors Q-Med, a Galderma Division, the main focus was on their latest product launch, Restylane® Lip Volume and Restylane® Lip Refresh. The new products are tailor-made to specifically suit the sensitive lip tissue. The concept is natural results and ‘irresistible softness’. Restylane® Lip Volume is a filler that will enhance both the volume of the lip as well as the lip line for a duration of approximately six months. Restylane® Lip Refresh is a skinbooster. It restores hydrobalance and rejuvenates the lips through emphasised definition, glow and improved smoothness, for a duration of up to six months. It is ideal for people who are not necessarily interested in marked volume enhancement and who would not consider a lip treatment if it were not for Restylane® Lip Refresh. The new range was also showcased in a masterclass with Dr Gertrude Huss as part of Monday’s conference programme.

April 29 and 30 saw the UK’s largest aesthetic meeting, the Cosmetic News Expo, take place at the Business Design Centre in Islington, London. The show was a huge success with more than 70 exhibitors and 800 visitors across the two days.

Page 15: Cosmetic News June 2012

“Last year we found the Cosmetic News Expo to be the best event on the calendar and this year surpassed all our expectations. Not only did we have the best quality of leads, the organisation by the CN team was superb and made the exhibition a resounding success” Kathryn Danzey (Rejuvenated)

SKINCEUTICALS (GOLD SPONSORS)SkinCeuticals was showcasing its full range of leading cosmeceutical products including the newly launched Phloretin CF Gel and AOX+ Eye Gel. The two new products, improve on delivery by, for the first time, allowing active ingredients to be formulated into a gel at a low pH. Typically gelifiers cannot be formulated at a low pH however the new technology allows actives to be suspended in solution at an acidic pH to penetrate skin down to the target site in the same way as aqueous serums. Phloretin CF Gel accelerates cell turnover and stimulates collagen synthesis to boost skin’s structure for a firmer, brighter complexion while AOX+ Eye Gel is designed to revive under-eye skin, reduce puffiness and correct photo damage.

LA ROCHE-POSAY (GOLD SPONSORS)

Joint Gold Sponsors with SkinCeuticals, La Roche-Posay is the No.1 skincare brand recommended by 25,000 dermatologists worldwide. La Roche-Posay has also just launched new 300ml sized bottles for its Anthelios XL sunscreen range. Anthelios XL offers the highest UV protection currently available on the market. The new 300ml sizes will be available in both the Anthelios XL Spray SPF 50+ and Anthelios XL Lotion SPF 50+ both specifically created to protect the body from UV damage.

SYNERON CANDELA (SILVER SPONSORS)

It has been a busy year for Syneron Candela with a number of exciting new product launches including the eTwo Sublime and Sublative skin tightening, resurfacing and rejuvenation system and the Motif (eLase) hair removal laser, which combines radio-frequency with with laser diode light to painlessly remove hair in half the time of its closest competitor (and at half the price). These technologically advanced new products complement Syneron Candela’s extensive range of industry favourites including last year’s exciting launch of ePrime, that takes you deeper and more targeted than you have gone before to volumise the face. Syneron Candela invited its customers to a series of workshops throughout the event, including an afternoon tea with Mr Chris Inglefield. ”This was my first time at one of these exhibitions and I found it very informative and interesting and pitched at a good level. It was an excellent exhibition with high quality demonstrations.” Catherine Mintern

“The Cosmetic News Expo was extremely easy to access and also effortless to get around. I loved the venue as it was spacious, light and airy with enough room for easy admission to all of the stands. I enjoyed the diversity with some products that were more aesthetic and others that were very much para-medical. It was a really interesting and forward thinking exhibition. There was plenty of food for thought and I was particularly interested in the more medically based beauty products and treatments for anti-ageing, that I believe shall shape the future.” Melissa Sharpe

“Everyone at Bathsheba Aesthetics would like to thank Cosmetic News for a wonderful show. The exhibitors had many exciting new products with the potential to expand our business; the conference talks were really informative and the workshop talks in the main hall were full of nuggets of invaluable information. We came away with lots to think about and to follow up. Really looking forward to next year!” Sheba Kanaber

Offering quick, effective and permanent hair ‘reduction’ on a wide range of body areas including the back, cheeks, chin, upper lip, shoulder, under arms, legs and arms, light-based treatments have become an increasingly popular choice with consumers in recent years. When it comes to laser and light based hair removal treatments today it is all about providing less painful or even ‘pain free’ hair removal in a shorter amount of sessions with longer lasting and more permanent results. The laser and IPL market is seeing innovations all the time with more and more systems now also being approved for use on darker skin types. However, light based hair removal is still most effective when the hair colour being targeted is darker than the skin colour, due to the absorption of light by the melanin or pigmentation, which acts as the chromophore or target of the light. Treatment is therefore most effective on patients who have black or brown hair and pale skin with darker skin types as well as blonde, white and red hair colours more difficult to treat and in some cases contraindicated.

There is no such thing as completely permanent hair removal with any machine or any type of treatment however an ever-increasing number of published studies have confirmed the long-term efficacy of laser and IPL treatments. Each person’s hair growth pattern is different and is affected by many known and unknown factors, mostly hormonal influences. Laser and IPL will cause a dramatic and permanent hair reduction, with remaining hair re-growth becoming finer and lighter. Most people who complete a course of treatments will find they get an extremely effective hair reduction during the course and very little

hair re-growth following. Some people will actually get complete hair reduction with no re-growth and others will require regular maintenance treatments once a year or so.

E L E C T R O LYS I S

Despite the advances in laser and IPL hair removal, electrolysis is still the only hair removal treatment that can claim to be ‘permanent’. Electrolysis removes unwanted hair through the means of a probe or needle being inserted into the hair follicle. There are three different methods available on the market: galvanic electrolysis; thermolysis/short wave diathermy electrolysis and blend electrolysis. The aim of all the methods is to damage the base of the growing hair in order to cut off the blood supply and nutrition to the hair, preventing any new growth from developing. The technique is selective and no minimal damage should occur to surrounding tissues. Although electrolysis does not offer the speed associated with LASER and IPL treatments, it can be used for many indications that LASER and IPL cannot, such as lighter hairs or on darker skin types and, as such, it is increasingly being used in conjunction with LASER and IPL treatments to enhance treatment outcome. Elaine Stoddart from Sterex explains, “LASER and IPL with their capability of treating large areas has resulted in electrolysis now being utilised to complete these treatments and ‘finish the job’. Often white hairs remain after LASER or IPL and electrologists can successfully remove these where LASER and IPL cannot. Electrolysis and LASER or IPL therefore work well together for the benefit of the client, offering every skin and hair type and colour the ‘holy grail’ of permanent hair removal.”On the following pages we round up 10 of the best laser and IPL hair removal devices on the market...

Unwanted hair is a huge problem for many men and women and as such hair removal has become on of the top things on the agenda of clients visiting beauty salons and aesthetics clinics. Excess hair may be the result of medical conditions, but there is also a huge social pressure, particularly for women to be ‘hair free’. The psychological trauma caused by excessive or unexpected hair growth is often strong enough to motivate patients, especially women, to seek treatment. With many people dissatisfied with traditional methods of treating unwanted hair such as shaving, waxing and tweezing which can not only be costly over time but are also cumbersome and have a short term effect, the prospect of more permanent treatments, such as laser or IPL hair removal and electrolysis has been an attractive one.

Hair removal is big business for aesthetic clinics. We examine the latest treatment options

1 . T H E ‘ O LY M P I C ’ G O L D S TA N D A R D L A S E R – M O T I F ( S Y N E R O N C A N D E L A ) The latest in ‘pain-free’ hair removal, the Motif (eLase) from Syneron Candela is so effective that it has the accolade of sponsoring the GBR synchronised swimming team for the London 2012 Olympics. The new laser combines radio-frequency with laser diode light and is powered by the company’s state-of-the art elos® technology to offer deep dermal penetration and longer lasting results. Because Motif harnesses RF to boost the light energy, it is highly effective, extremely fast and very comfortable compared to traditional laser hair removal. It is also safer as it uses less optical energy. Although RF is non-selective it has two advantages, according to James Bartholomeuz, VP of Global product design at Syneron Candela. “RF non-selectively heats tissue volume quickly and effectively gives accumulated heat”, he explains. “RF is more predictable than light with 100% flowing into tissue. The RF energy can also be used to monitor the impedance (resistance) in skin and so allow us to give a good feedback about the delivery. RF can be measured in j/cm3 so typically with Motif 50j\cm3 is delivered equivalent to 40j/cm2/second – this is on top of the light energy delivered.”This use of RF also makes the treatment less painful as it builds up an accumulative heat and more directly heats the hair follicle rather than the tissue surrounding it. The Motif can be used to treat all skin types and all hair colours, including fair facial hair, in as little as four treatments and, as it also utilises a fast acting Contact Cooling Device, the treatment is virtually pain free.

2 . T H E O R I G I N A L ‘ PA I N F R E E ’ L A S E R – S O P R A N O ® X L I ( A B C L A S E R S )The Soprano® XLi is one of the origin al pioneers of virtually pain free laser hair removal has raised the bar across the industry. Recent Google statistics show that over a third of Google searches for laser hair removal are for Soprano® showing that this treatment with its 810nm diode laser and exclusive In-Motion™ technology has captured the hearts of both the public and medical professionals. Low fluence makes the Soprano Xli a standout in the industry. Instead of simply blasting unwanted hair, SHR technology heats the hair follicles gradually—without discomfort. In fact, this approach, combined with cooling from the Sapphire tip, makes it so comfortable that neither gels nor analgesics are required. The Soprano® XLi works by safely and gently heating the dermis to a temperature that damages the hair follicle, prevents re-growth, yet does not injure the surrounding skin. “Soprano® is one of the most popular systems for laser hair removal. It’s In-Motion technique has been proven to be a faster treatment and less painful than traditional diode lasers, and is effective for maintaining hair reduction for a long period of time”, commented US Dermatologist and laser luminary Dr Michael Gold. Soprano XLi works on all skin types, including tanned skin, and all hair pigmentation, so the practitioner can provide safe, effective and pain-free SHR hair removal for anyone, anytime--without restrictions at any time of the year which is a plus for profitability. ”The Soprano XL in SHR mode provides a new level of safety for darker skin tones without compromising efficacy.” (Martin Braun, MD Vancouver Laser & Skincare Centre, Canada --as quoted in Journal of Drugs in Dermatology (JDD), Nov. 2009). Soprano® XLi also has a super fast coverage rate, with a huge 12x10 mm spot and up to 10 Hz repetition rate. Plus, with no consumables, Soprano XL is easy to operate and very cost-effective. What’s more, the Soprano® XLi can also provide skin tightening with the near-infrared NIR module. Uniform energy distribution with a huge 18cm2 spot produces deep dermal heating--without damage to the epidermis.

You don’t get a much bigger accolade than winning an international award for the ‘Best Hair Removal Device’. Cynosure’s Elite laser was awarded the title at the THE Best Aesthetic Products Awards in Las Vegas. The awards ceremony highlights the world’s best aesthetic product manufacturers for their achievements in procedural technological innovations as part of the annual Aesthetic Show, a leading multidisciplinary medical education meeting for aesthetic professionals around the world. Cynosure also won the Best Energy-AssistedLiposuction Device award for its SmartLipo system. Commenting on the win, Neil Wolfenden, managing director of Cynosure UK said, “We are extremely honoured and proud of the continued recognition from our customers in supporting both the Elite laser system for hair removal and Smart Lipo laser system for fat reduction and body contouring. The strength in the reliability of these lasers is a major factor to ensure maximum return on investment. Cynosure has raised the bar in providing excellent patient satisfaction on both comfort and clinical efficacy. We will continue to raise the bar by introducing new products into this highly demanding market where patient and laser operator expectation comes first. It is a very exciting time for Cynosure

and I am very proud in being part of it.” The Elite laser is the next generation multi-wavelength system for hair removal, with integrated aircooling and larger spot sizes. Offering two wavelengths that can be blended together, this revolutionary treatment treats all skin types including black and Asian skin for the first time! It can remove unwanted facial and body hair, as well as pigmented or vascular lesions, thread veins and photo-aged skin. The laser emits a gentle beam of light, which only is absorbed by the hair follicle (leaving the skin completely unharmed). It delivers energy absorbed in the hair and transformed to heat, which destroys the hair follicle within a fraction of a second. The Cynosure-Elite blends two wavelengths to deliver more energy safely, efficiently and effectively by allowing the surgeon to optimize the delivery of thermal energy based on the individual skin type. Dr Ayham Al-Ayoubi, medical director of the London Medical and Aesthetic Clinic on Harley Street has seen impressive results. “Unwanted hair is a problem for thousands of men and women. It can undermine confidence, affect relationships and impact upon just about every area of your life. The Elite laser is one of the safest treatments for permanent hair removal with a built-in air cooling system to cool the skin prior to and post lasering, reducing likelihood of swelling or redness.”

Ellipse I²PL hair removal treatment offers clinically proven, safe and effective long-term removal of unwanted hair. Ellipse I²PL contains a dual mode filtering system, which ensures that only clinically relevant wavelengths are directed onto the skin. The key benefit from other IPL treatments is that no active skin cooling is needed. The light from other IPL systems can be absorbed into the blood and water in the skin meaning cooling agents have to be used. Ellipse I2PL for hair removal works by targeting only the melanin (pigment in the hair). As the light is absorbed it breaks the bond between the blood supply and the hair follicle rendering the hair follicle unable to produce hair. South African practitioner Rufaida Moosa commented, “I purchased an Ellipse I²PL machine in April 2007. This machine was purchased after thorough research, as I had previously bought another piece of equipment, which promised miracles, but produced NONE. The results I’ve been personally receiving with the Ellipse I²PL are phenomenal. Hair removal is my biggest market and as I mostly work with Indian skin the HR-D applicator works wonders. I have yet to come across a machine with a separate applicator, which targets darker skin types. I’ve also got a lot of new clients in who have previously had treatments done with other lasers and IPLs, without much success. Now they are extremely happy with the Ellipse.Another wonder of this piece of equipment is the VL-2 applicator, which is used for skin rejuvenation. Once again results are phenomenal.”

6 . T H E B E S T O F B R I T I S H L A S E R – P O L A R I S LO N G P U L S E D N D : YAG L A S E R ( P O L A R I S )Polaris Medical Ltd is a UK based manufacturer of laser systems for hair removal, tattoo removal and vascular

treatments. From their factory in Bedfordshire Polaris started making OEM Ruby lasers in the late nineties, initially for tattoo removal then for hair removal. Ruby lasers for hair removal were quickly made obsolete by the advent of Alexandrite and then Yag systems. The POLARIS 1064 Long Pulsed Nd:YAG LASER can be safely and successfully used for the removal of hair on all skin types, Fitzpatrick scale I-VI. One of the many advantages of using Laser light at 1064nm is that melanin absorption is very low. As a result the risk of skin pigmentation damage, either hyper or hypo, is very low, making long pulsed Nd:Yag lasers the only choice for hair removal on skin types III-VI. The Polaris long pulsed Nd:Yag can also be used for the treatment of red and blue, broken capillaries on both the leg and the face.

The 810 diode laser can be used to treat all skin types and has a 14x10 spot-size. The high power laser also operates at12hz, making the treatment incredibly fast. The portable system comes on a mobile rack and includes a choice of different handpieces that are specialised on different applications. The MeDioStar NeXT handpieces are fitted with a system that cools the area to be treated immediately before emitting the pulse, guaranteeing greater comfort and safety for the patient during treatment. A monitoring system inside the laser device regulates the cooling level, always keeping the skin temperature low and ensuring painless and extremely delicate treatment of all skin types. THE NEXT GENERATION RADIOFREQUENCY TECHNOLOGY

Page 38: Cosmetic News June 2012

cosmeticnewsuk.com38

The decision was taken due to the lack of consensus amongst radiologists regarding best practices in the examination of breasts treated with Macrolane. After reviewing the current situation, and in consultation with the relevant authorities, Q-Med, decided to stop promoting the use of Macrolane in breast enhancement until consensus has been reached regarding best practices in breast radiology examination following Macrolane treatment.

In response to this the MHRA issued the following advice and called for action to be taken by breast surgeons, cosmetic surgeons, GPs, mammographers, plastic surgeons, radiographers and radiologists:

Do not use Macrolane for breast augmentation. •Have procedures in place for radiographers •to check with patients presenting for breast examination for any history of breast injection. Staff should request the card that the patient was given at the time of injection, identifying Macrolane as the product used, and pass it on to the examining radiologist. Women may present with concerns that the •injected Macrolane has affected mammogram results. GPs may wish to consider referral for repeat imaging.

But what does this mean for practitioners who have been using their product and their patients?

What is Macrolane?Macrolane is a safe and well-tolerated injectable product used to augment body contour and correct soft tissue defects. Introduced in 2008, it has improved the quality of life of thousands of patients in indications ranging from HIV-related lipoatrophy to breast augmentation. Macrolane is the first hyaluronic acid–based product for body contouring. It provides instant and long lasting results without the need for open surgery and therefore avoids some of the consequences such as scarring. It is injected subcutaneously for body contouring. The Macrolane gel is based on Q-Med’s unique and

patented NASHA™ technology. NASHA gels for facial aesthetic treatments have been used in over 15 million treatments in over 70 countries worldwide. The safety and effectiveness of NASHA gels have been clinically proven and well documented in facial aesthetics for over 15 years.Macrolane is available in two different formulations, or volume restoration factors, Macrolane VRF20 and Macrolane VRF30. Macrolane VRF20 is suitable for areas with less tissue support and cover, while Macrolane VRF30 is a thicker gel suitable for areas with substantial tissue support and cover.

Does the decision to discontinue the breast indication for Macrolane mean that the product is not safe? No. There are no safety concerns with Macrolane as a product. This decision has been taken due to the lack of consensus amongst radiologists regarding examination of breasts treated with injectable products. Macrolane is a high-quality product manufactured to CE Mark standards. Macrolane is a safe and effective product providing a high level of satisfaction for thousands of patients who have received the product in conjunction with a body contouring or breast augmentation procedure in many different countries in the world. A safety reporting system has been in place since launch in 2008 and no safety concerns have been identified. Macrolane will remain available for use in body contouring procedures.

Will Q-Med withdraw Macrolane from the market completely? No. Macrolane is not being recalled or withdrawn from the market. Macrolane will remain available for body contouring procedures.

How does Macrolane interfere with the reading of mammograms? A safety reporting system has been in place since launch and no safety concerns have been identified however, all breast augmentation procedures can

interfere in the reading of mammograms. This is well-recognised and is typically addressed by using additional standard assessment techniques or radiology investigations. To use ultrasound as an adjunct to mammography is not unusual, particularly in women with dense breast for whom the sensitivity of screening mammography maybe reduced. Macrolane can interfere with reading of mammography. The current Macrolane product information provides very clear information about this. Q-Med supports international recommendations on the importance of baseline examination prior to breast augmentation. After breast enhancement, digital mammography is the preferred method of obtaining adequate information for screening purposes. Supplemental ultrasound may also be employed. This sequence of investigations has been proposed by expert radiologists.

A 24-month follow-up study was recently conducted in Sweden and France to evaluate any potential difficulties with the interpretation of digital mammography image (s) or ultras onography and the value of this combination of radiology investigations. The preliminary results of this study suggest that an adequate examination can be performed using those techniques. Q-Med will make the 24-month follow-up data available as soon as possible to facilitate optimal clinical follow-up of women treated with Macrolane.

Do I need to contact my patients who have received Macrolane? No. There are no safety concerns with Macrolane as a product and there is no need to contact your patients who have received it. Women who have undergone breast augmentation by injection of Macrolane do not need to take any action and are not subject to specific medical follow-up other than as prescribed by their practitioner following the procedure. They should continue to attend scheduled follow-up consultations.

How shall I address concerns raised by my patients who have received Macrolane?Inform patients that Macrolane is a safe product consisting of hyaluronic acid and water and that there are no safety concerns with Macrolane. Reassure patients that because Macrolane is comprised of natural ingredients that their body will break down typically between 12 and 24 months after injection, there is no cause for alarm and that Macrolane does not need to be removed. Additionally, Q-Med is preparing a patient information brochure regarding the discontinuation of the Macrolane breast indication that will be distributed to you in the near future.

We explore the recent decision by Q-Med to discontinue the breast indication for Macrolane™ and answer some of your concerns about why

SpeciAl report

On April 25, the MHRA issued a Medical Device Alert with regards to Q-Med’s dermal filler for breast augmentation, Macrolane™ Volume Restoration Factor (VRF). The alert followed a letter that was sent to practitioners by Q-Med (a Galderma Division) on April 17 recommending that Macrolane VRF20 and Macrolane VRF30 were no longer used for injection into the breast because it could make diagnosis of breast cancer more difficult, particularly during mammography.

the microscopic punctures (which are often just the

opening of the pores of your skin) stimulate collagen

production in the papillary dermis layer. the trauma

caused triggers the fibroblasts (scar formation and

healing cells) for collagen and elastin formation.

skin needling is not a new anti-ageing method. already

in the late eighties, skin specialists have published

scientific papers on the results of needling on old

depressed scars, wrinkles as well as stretchmarks.

dermatologists also noticed that hypochromic

(depigmented) skin, repigmented through the

transplantation of melanocytes (pigment producing

cells) from normal skin into the hypochromic

(depigmented) skin during the needling procedure. they

also reported flattening of hypertrophic (overgrown)

scars. the first needling procedures thirty years back,

were performed using a high speed tattoo gun (without

pigment obviously), under local anaesthesia and treated

each scar to pinpoint bleeding. the procedure was every

two to eight weeks and no side effects or complications

were reported.

skin needling can be safely performed on all skin

colours and types. there is no risk of postinflammatory

hyperpigmentation (pigmentation of the skin as a result

of skin trauma) as the melanocytes remain, like the

dermis, intact during skin needling. this is the major

distinguishing safety feature when comparing skin

needling and other invasive procedures that are used to

treat deep lines and depressed scars, ie laser resurfacing,

deep chemical peels and dermabrasion.

the tattoo gun technique evolved to ‘manual’ needling,

which has been widely applied till present. the technique

involves application of local anesthetic prior the treatment.

this will allow the dermatologist to become more

“invasive “ on key areas which will actually act as facelift.

however in recent years there have also been developed

the ‘dermarollers’. a dermaroller is a device which caries

nearly 200 minute needles on it. as it rolls on the skin

surface produces a mild trauma. there have been also

introduced dermarollers for home application. my advice

on this is, to take your dermatologists’ advice before you

apply this. at home application of dermaroller might

result, infection, discoloration and other unwanted results.

skin needling with a skin roller produces hundreds of tiny

dermal injuries, similar to the ones described above. each

dermal injury triggers the body’s natural wound healing

response within the skin, producing and depositing new

collagen in the treatment area. each successive treatment

triggers the production and deposition of new collagen

that progressively fills in depressed scars and deep lines.

dr Penelope tympanidis gives her View on skin needling treatments

DR PENELOPE TYMPANIDIS

Dr Penelope Tympanidis is a consultant dermatologist and the owner of the Dermaperfect clinic on Harley Street. Recognised by the European Board of Dermatology, she is one of London’s leading dermatologists and has been a pioneer in minimally invasive anti-aging techniques for the last 13 years, having been featured in Tatler magazine, the Telegraph, Vogue, the Financial Times Weekend supplement as well as the Channel 4 programme, Make Me Perfect. Dr Tympanidis trained at Tufts, Boston and UCL and has worked as a Consultant in Dermatology at Mayday University Hospital in London, as a Clinical Research Registrar at the Department of Dermatology at UCL and the Royal Free/UCL Medical School Campus as well as in various busy dermatology units in Liverpool and Glasgow. She has gained first-hand experience in general dermatology, photo-dermatology, allergy and patch testing, pediatric dermatology, skin cancer clinics, laser treatment sessions, and teaching students and General Practitioners. She now trains junior plastic surgeons, on minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, and junior dermatologists on cutaneous surgery.

Skin needling or micro-needling is a form of Collagen induction therapy that is intended to smooth wrinkles, improve depressed acne scarring as well as reduce the appearance of stretch marks. it is one of the easiest and most effective skin treatments available. Skin ageing and wrinkles are due to the fact that our skin produces less collagen and elastin than the ones it breaks down. it is the increase of these key ingredients, which help the skin to appear rejuvenated.

this infilling process can continue for up to 12 months after a

treatment has been performed.

there are now a number of skin rollers available and they

come in many different needle lengths, needle diameters and

needle numbers, which can make it very confusing for their

users. in my own practice, i have tried many different needle

lengths and needle diameters, in an attempt to determine

the best combination for treating scars and rejuvenating the

skin. the number of needles on a roller is the least important

feature, as repeated rolling causes numerous dermal injuries.

needle diameter is very important as we are seeking to

maximise the dermal injury without creating a new scar. in

my experience, 0.25mm needle diameter is the maximum that

can be used without causing a new scar in the skin. smaller

diameter needle skin rollers can

be used but do not maximise the

dermal injury and therefore will be

slower to produce results.

needle length is also a critical issue.

the target when we needle the

dermis is a layer in the upper dermis

called the intermediate reticular

dermis. this dermal layer contains

the highest number of stem cells,

which are able to produce new collagen. the epidermis (the

outer layer of the skin ) varies in depth from .05mm on the

eyelids to 1.5mm on the soles of the feet. the epidermis of the

face (other than the eyelids ) varies from 0.3mm to 1mm in

depth and therefore a 0.75mm to 2mm needle length is more

than adequate to reach the intermediate reticular dermis. in my

experience, needles more than 2mm in length have a tendency

to catch and tear the skin.

having said all the above i still finish the needling procedure

with manual work. needling is a great technique when treating

wrinkles, acne scars and skin pigmentation, but it is also an

art in its own right. manual needling still remains the most

sophisticated technique for the best results, as it is a tailor made

procedure to each patients’ need. it is more precise, as the skin

has not the same quality inch by inch. manual needling is also

what makes the difference of a specialists’ dermatologists’

work, to a non-specialist physicians work as no one knows the

biology of the skin as a specialist dermatologist.

needling may be safely combined with all minimally invasive

techniques namely, botox and fillers, for even greater results.

the most cutting edge technique with ‘face-lift’ results, is

the combination of needling with hyaluronic acid injections.

it is slightly different than the technique described above,

however, it works out miracles. you might wonder what the

secret of celebrities is who declare they had no facelift done: it

is the combo needling with hyaluronic acid injections which

tightens the skin, while at the same time, sculpturing of the

face is performed.

results of needling also vary from patient to patient. results

depend on many factors, mainly on each individuals response

to trauma. improvement may vary from 20% to 90%.

skin needling is now well established as a treatment option

for depressed acne scarring and wrinkles. it is a far more cost

effective option than fractional laser therapy and delivers very

similar results with repeated treatments.i would confidently

affirm that needling performed appropriately may postpone a

face-lift for a decade.

as the skin has a memory and will seek to return to its

previous state, i recommend repeated skin needling treatments

over a period of one to two years. i also recommend that my

patients minimise all factors that may compromise the results

such as sun exposure and alcohol consumption.

“I would confidently affirm that needling performed appropriately may postpone a face-lift for a decade”

A S E N S I T I V E I S S U E We find out how La Roche-Posay is creating a better life for sensitive skin

This antioxidant rich water is revered for its naturally occurring high levels of Selenium which plays an important role in cell metabolism helping to protect against free-radicals, participates in the inflammatory and immune processes, slows the process of cell ageing and helps protect against UV rays. Also high in silicates, which provide added protection to the skin, La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water is soothing and calming on atopic and irritated skin. Twelve in vitro and in vivo

tests, published in leading dermatological journals, have shown La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water to have moisturising, soothing, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, healing, anti-pruritic and anti-irritant properties. Additive-free, it’s not exposed to any contamination, and does not undergo any chemical treatment from the time it is extracted to the moment it is packaged. The town of La Roche-Posay is also home to the Centre of Thermal Dermatology and over 50% of all dermatological spa treatments in France take place there. The centre treats a range of skin conditions including eczema and atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, burns and scarring, severe acne and redness. The French government see these treatments as medical therapies and many people are prescribed to go there through the French National Health Service. All of La Roche-Posay’s products undergo rigorous testing to ensure that they are suitable for even the most sensitive of skins and adhere to a strict formulation charter which makes sure that no extraneous ingredients are used; only ingredients which are key to the product’s efficacy are included. Our commitment to sensitive skin doesn’t end with the formulation of

our products; all of our packaging is designed to ensure hygiene and the preservation of the product.

A B E T T E R L I F E W I T H S E N S I T I V E S K I N With 52% of UK women claiming to have sensitive skin and 42 million patients seen each year because of allergies, La Roche-Posay have developed a unique sensitest which has been carefully designed so that healthcare professionals and even consumers themselves can diagnose their degree of atopic, contact, vascular and environmental reactivity and so make an informed choice about which products will be best suited to their skin. La Roche-Posay‘s Toleriane Ultra is an intensely soothing product for people with ultra-sensitive and allergic skin. The formula for this product has been stripped down to the bare essentials, removing all potentially irritating or allergy inducing ingredients. Toleriane Ultra is preservative-free, paraben-free; alcohol, colourant and lanolin free providing immediate and lasting relief for those suffering from allergy-prone skin. Toleriane Ultra has been tested on 49 polyallergic patients reacting to at least two of the allergens listed on the Eurpoean Standard Series of Allergens and was found to have excellent tolerance. Toleriane Ultra has been awarded the seal of approval from Allergy UK, meaning that those with even the most sensitive, reactive skins can put their trust its formulation and efficacy.

T H E P E R F E C T PA R N T E R TO PRESCRIPTION M E D I C I N EMuch of the La Roche-Posay range is designed to provide the perfect adjunctive therapy to many prescription drugs used to treat serious skin conditions. For example, one in nine people in the UK suffer from

Eczema and the majority of these will be prescribed a topical steroid cream. Containing 4% Niacinamide, La Roche-Posay’s Lipikar Balm AP helps restore the skin’s barrier function and fights inflammation helping the skin to repair itself. Drugs prescribed for the treatment of acne such as Isotretinoin often provoke severe drying of the skin and lips, La Roche-Posay’s Effaclar H Mousse and Ceralip are formulated to cleanse and soothe skin and lips that have been dried and weakened as a result of prescription drugs.

S U N P ROT E C T I O N In addition to treating sensitive skin, it is equally important to protect it. PRimcoGent solutions launches lunula laseRPrimcogent Solutions has announced the launch of Lunula Laser, a clinically proven, low level laser therapy for onychomycosis. Lunula Laser brings new hope to people suffering from fungal nail infections, providing a completely safe, pain-free treatment of onychomycosis in just two 12-minute treatments.

Manufactured by Erchonia, Lunula Laser is based on Low Level Laser Technology (LLLT) and provides effective treatment of onychomycosis without the risks and harmful side effects of oral medication, or the pain and recovery time associated with other laser treatments. It combines two different wavelength lasers – one at 405 nm for direct fungicidal activity and one at 635 nm to stimulate a natural immune response – to provide effective clearing of the nail bed within three months. In a recent study of 105 toenails, clinicians observed a mean percentage change in clear nail bed of 30.4 percent, or 5 mm. Furthermore, 62 percent of toenails treated achieved at least a 25 percent increase in clear nail after 3 months, thus validating the use of Lunula Laser to target onychomycosis. The Lunula Laser has been specifically designed for use by physicians and their staff, requiring very little set-up time and no operator intervention, creating a complete walk-away treatment thanks to preset dosage times and output energies. This innovative therapy provides effective relief for patients after just two treatments, alleviating the pain and embarrassment of unsightly nail fungus by restoring growth of clear, healthy nails.

AbStrActS

TITLE: Validation of a Lip Fullness Scale for Assessment of Lip AugmentationAUTHOR: Kane, Michael, Lorenc, Z Paul, Lin, Xiaoming, Smith, Stacy RPublished: Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, May 2012, Volume 129, Issue 5, p822e–828e

ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Given the growing use of dermal fillers for cosmetic lip augmentation, a validated instrument with which to measure lip fullness is desirable in the clinic and as an efficacy endpoint in clinical studies. The authors developed and conducted a validation study of a Medicis-developed lip fullness scale.METHODS: The Medicis Lip Fullness Scale consists of separate five-point scales for the upper and lower lips, with three photographs exemplifying each grade. Five board-certified dermatologists or plastic surgeons assessed 85 test photographs for each lip on two separate occasions for the first round of validation (photograph versus photograph). Three of the evaluators also graded lip fullness in 39 live subjects, followed 2 weeks later by scoring of the same subjects’ photographs for the second round of validation (live versus photographic).RESULTS: Within-observer agreement between the two sequential photographic evaluations was almost perfect (weighted κ = 0.81). Between-observer weighted κ values ranged from 0.60 to 0.83 for the upper lip and 0.61 to 0.82 for the lower lip. Exact agreement between the live and photographic assessments of the same subjects was 60 percent and 52 percent for upper and lower lips, respectively.CONCLUSIONS: The Medicis Lip Fullness Scale showed high interrater and intrarater reliability in comparisons of test photographs and moderate to substantial reliability in live assessment of patients versus photographs. The Medicis Lip Fullness Scale is suitable for grading lip fullness in clinical trials.

TITLE: Low fluence–high repetition rate diode laser hair removal 12-month evaluation: Reducing pain and risks while keeping clinical efficacyAUTHORS: Daniel Barolet MDPUBLISHED: Lasers in Surgery and Medicine Volume 44, Issue 4, pages 277–281, April 2012

ABSTRACTBACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: High fluence diode lasers with contact cooling have emerged as the mainstay modality for hair removal. However, the use of these devices is associated with pain and side effects, especially in patients with dark or tanned skin. A novel concept of depilation at low fluence using 810 nm diode laser has been introduced as a solution to these shortcomings. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the lasting efficacy and safety of low-level fluence 810 nm (15 J/cm2) and high repetition rate (5 Hz) F1 Diode Laser™ therapy on hair reduction in patients with various skin types.STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: This randomised, controlled, bilaterally paired within-patient, double-blind study compared low level fluence 810 nm (15 Joules/cm2) laser diode therapy to nontreated shaved control areas on long-term hair

reduction. Seventeen patients with skin type II–V were treated four times at 1 month intervals. Hair count was assessed monthly over 10 months using an objective computerised method. Safety and tolerability were assessed by adverse reactions monitoring.RESULTS: Statistically significant differences in hair count between treated and control sites were observed at each follow-up visit. The majority of patients reported a slight but bearable sensation of heat during the laser treatment, and transient erythema post-treatment.CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that laser hair removal with the F1 Diode Laser™ system was generally well tolerated, safe, and efficacious in this small sample study of patients with various skin types. After just four treatments, permanent hair reduction following one complete hair cycle has been shown. Controlled studies on larger groups of patients within each skin phototype are needed to confirm these promising results.

TITLE: A complete range of hyaluronic acid filler with distinctive physical properties specifically designed for optimal tissue adaptations.AUTHORS: Segura S, Anthonioz L, Fuchez F, Herbage B, Wheeler TPUBLISHED: J Drugs Dermatol. 2012 Jan;11(1 Suppl):s5-8.

ABSTRACTA new range of hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers has been designed using Optimal Balance Technology™, which centers around three main parameters: the degree of cross-linking, the size of gel calibration and the HA concentration. The five different products in the range (HA E Touch, HA E Classic, HA E Lips, HA E Deep and HA E Volume) have the same concentration of HA (20 mg/mL) and various degrees of cross-linking and gel calibration, in order to have distinctive physical properties adapted to their specific indications. HA E Classic, HA E Deep, HA E Lips and HA E Volume are available in two different formulations either with or without lidocaine. The efficacy, safety and patient satisfaction of the HA E range in various indications have been assessed in several clissical studies. In this study, the rheological measurements of HA E Deep being the firmest gel within the range. Addition of lidocaine did not change the rheological properties of the HA E fillers. HA E fillers have three different degrees of gel calibration, with HA E Touch, HA E Classic and HA E Lips having the same smallest gel calibration and HA E Volume having the largest gel calibration within the range. Injection of all HA E fillers was smooth, regular, and required low extrusion force when using the Ultra Thin Wall (UTW)needle provided for each product. In summary, the HA E fillers have distinctive physical properties in terms of gel firmness and gel calibration, which were designed to adapt to their specific indications.

TITLE: A single-blinded comparative study between the use of glycolic acid 70% peel and the use of topical nanosome vitamin C iontophoresis in the treatment of melasmaAUTHORS: Rehab Mohamed Sobhi MD1, Ahmed Mohamed Sobhi MD2

PUBLISHED: Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology Volume 11, Issue 1, pages 65–71, March 2012

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Melasma is a common pigmentary disorder. Despite the availability of a wide range of skin-lightening treatments, melasma of skin remains a therapeutic challenge.OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of nanosome vitamin C iontophoresis and to compare the therapeutic effects of nanosome vitamin C iontophoresis vs. glycolic acid peel 70% in the treatment of melasma in Egyptian women. Methods: This study included 14 patients of melasma with skin type IV–V taken for a right–left comparison study of six sessions. Glycolic acid 70% peel was applied on the right side, whereas nanosome vitamin C was applied by iontophoresis on the other side. The results are evaluated using the melasma area and severity index score and with photographs at baseline and after six sessions. Also the photographs were evaluated by two single-blinded physicians before and after sessions.RESULTS: Both sides were improved, but the side treated with nanosome vitamin C showed better results. Side effects were few and transient.CONCLUSION: We concluded that nanosome vitamin C is a new, safe and effective, easy and painless method in the treatment of melasma.

TITLE: Changes in the Facial Skeleton With Aging: Implications and Clinical Applications in Facial RejuvenationAUTHORS: Bryan Mendelson and Chin-Ho WongPublished: Aesthetic Plastic Surgery First Online

ABSTRACT In principle, to achieve the most natural and harmonious rejuvenation of the face, all changes that result from the aging process should be corrected. Traditionally, soft tissue lifting and redraping have constituted the cornerstone of most facial rejuvenation procedures. Changes in the facial skeleton that occur with aging and their impact on facial appearance have not been well appreciated. Accordingly, failure to address changes in the skeletal foundation of the face may limit the potential benefit of any rejuvenation procedure. Correction of the skeletal framework is increasingly viewed as the new frontier in facial rejuvenation. It currently is clear that certain areas of the facial skeleton undergo resorption with aging. Areas with a strong predisposition to resorption include the midface skeleton, particularly the maxilla including the pyriform region of the nose, the superomedial and inferolateral aspects of the orbital rim, and the prejowl area of the mandible. These areas resorb in a specific and predictable manner with aging. The resultant deficiencies of the skeletal foundation contribute to the stigmata of the aging face. In patients with a congenitally weak skeletal structure, the skeleton may be the primary cause for the manifestations of premature aging. These areas should be specifically examined in patients undergoing facial rejuvenation and addressed to obtain superior aesthetic results.

Cosmetic News: Karen, you are arguably one of the most successful businesswomen in the UK cosmetic medical market. How did you get here?

Karen Hill: I started in the pharmaceutical industry with Boehringer and ended up running a national team of brilliant sales people.Together we not only stopped the decline of our cash cow but actually increased the turnover by 50%! After a MSc

and a spell with Ansbacher, a private Bank, I took the plunge with the Healthxchange. The attraction was an intuitive, innovative senior management team with a ‘never say die’ attitude. It’s been an amazing experience and I have made so many great friends in the industry.

CN: If you had to pinpoint one factor that holds back growth in this market what would it be?KH: ‘Debt Intolerance’. Uncertainty and media noise has caused nervousness. Businesses are afraid to invest for fear of over committing. For many clinics this is irrational as revenues remain strong and borrowing interest rates are low. It is a perfect time to invest. The switched on companies understand this and have taken action e.g. SmartMed, marketing the hugely successful INTRAcel, have introduced a scheme whereby they will cover the first six lease payments for the clinic. In the intervening six months, even with low to moderate uptake, the clinic will earn enough to cover the whole cost of purchase. It is effectively getting a free INTRAcel.

CN: What are you three tips for success?KH:

Surround yourself with great people, invest in 1. them and you will get great results. Get a great receptionist ! She is your clinic’s public face and is a living representation of the private philosophy of the practice. Most patients will make their mind up what they think of the practice in the first 45 seconds, long before you ever get to see them! Training is important. Have protocols for answering the phone, handling complaints,

meeting and greeting patients, keeping them informed and comfortable if there is a delay and the subtle art of making settling the bill a pleasure. Pay attention to the detail. Never work alone. Get a great nurse colleague to support and work with you. Your injecting and treating time is valuable and an expert nurse can be arranging consents, discussing charges, applying anaesthetic and cross marketing other treatments when you are seeing the next patient. Surround yourself with colleagues that you can call upon to discuss difficult cases and refer to. Don’t forget the support you can get from your sales reps. They can help organise an open evening, advise on marketing campaigns and its free!Cover your costs with horizontal earnings. Most 2. injectors, surgeons and doctors earn fees on an ‘item for service basis’. The harder you work the more you make. This can sometimes seem like being on a treadmill. I have even heard some professionals say they don’t like to take time off for holidays as all they can think of are the mounting costs while they are away from the clinic. Horizontal earnings are called that because they can make you money whilst lying on a bed or sun lounger. Sounds ideal doesn’t it! The easiest way to do this is to introduce a cosmeceutical range into the clinic, such as Obagi. In the US some clinics add 50% onto their total revenues with very little added effort or cost. Look to make money from your assets e.g. rent rooms out when you are not using them, choose professionals offering related services e.g. a plastic surgeon, or train your nurse to perform hair

removal, skincare consultations and laser work all of which will turn a cost into a revenue source. Target your marketing. Many clinics have a 3. strategy of throwing out a wide net to draw in patients. This is expensive and you have no control over the type of consultation such a strategy will bring in. The return on investment is often low and hard to measure. A much more effective way to market is directly to your database. These are patients who already know about your services and are often advocates for your clinic. Collect email addresses, ask consent to send information and ensure your reception staff update information every time a patient attends the surgery. In a very short time you will have a ‘clean email contact list’. Be careful that you send balanced, interesting information about your services. One e-shot can drive as much as 30% additional business for up to three months and it costs very little to do. The Healthxchange is developing an electronic magazine which can be bespoke for individual clinics specifically aiming at the electronic marketing market. No ads just great information! Hold your nerve, stay true to your values and beliefs, I believe you get what you pay for, its better to decide am I a quality professional and do I deserve to be paid for that or do I want to adopt a stack ‘em high flog ‘em cheap option? My view? Stay away from cheap! And short term tricks like Quidsin and Groupon. It is often a false economy, cannibalises your own market, drives down your own prices and does not smack of quality professionalism you can rely on.

THE INTERNET ON THE GO

There is a growing body of evidence to show that mobile and tablet internet usage is

expanding at break-neck speed in the UK. According to the Office for National Statistics in

2011, an extra six million people used their mobile phone to access the internet compared

to 2010 (1) and now for the first time more people in the UK say they use a smartphone

(89%) than a laptop or desktop computer (75%) (2) to go online.

Google also conducted research in January 2012 to compare smartphone usage in the US,

the UK, Germany, France and Japan and found that the UK had the highest penetration of

smartphone ownership at 45% of the population. It also found that 54% of smartphone

users were accessing the internet on their phone on a daily basis.

Growing smartphone ownership and usage is translating into traffic for health related

websites too. For example, WhatClinic.com, a consumer search engine for medical services

and facilities, has seen mobile phone traffic increase by 23% in the last month alone (3), and

by a staggering 339% comparing April 2012 to April 2011. Mobile and tablet traffic to the

website now accounts for more than 23% of the site’s total traffic.

In the past, the web browsers on most smartphones were not able to handle all the

technological features of modern websites, requiring website owners to build mobile

specific versions of their sites. Thankfully phone browsers have come on in leaps and

bounds recently but there are still some potential pitfalls that clinic owners can take some

simple steps to avoid.

U p wa r d ly M O B I L E

Caelen King CEO of WhatClinic.com gives an insight into the explosive growth of mobile internet devices and the potential

pitfalls facing cosmetic clinicsAccording to BUPA’s 2011 Health

Pulse Report 70% of people in the UK use the internet to access health

information, and with British interest in cosmetic surgery at an all time high

clinics have no choice but to create an online presence to help attract new customers. However, the rapidly evolving nature of how consumers access the internet means that even the most recently designed clinic websites could be causing unexpected problems for potential patients. A simple check to make sure a clinic’s website works properly on the most common mobile phones and tablets could make the difference between gaining new customers or losing them to a savvier rival.

cosmeticnewsuk.com54

Page 55: Cosmetic News June 2012

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF ABOUT YOUR WEBSITE

The first thing to check is does the page look relatively normal when viewed •

on a phone browser, or are pieces overlapping or missing unexpectedly?

Second, can users read the text without having to zoom and scroll •

excessively?

Do the navigation links still work on a mobile device or are they too small for •

fingers to click on?

And finally, and most importantly, can mobile users still email you, use your •

contact form, or find your phone number easily?

These simple checks can help to quickly identify reasons that consumers might

be having trouble using a website on a mobile device, and often the bugs they

identify can be fixed simply.

Some clinics might not want to stop there though, and in order to get ahead

of their competition they might consider entering the burgeoning “apps”

marketplace too.

SHOULD YOU BUILD AN APP FOR YOUR CLINIC?Applications (or to give them their shorter name - apps) have spread like wildfire in

tandem with the massive rise in smartphone use amongst UK consumers. According

to a BBC report, 1.2 billion apps were downloaded worldwide in the last week of

December 2011 alone (4).

This research also showed how staggeringly popular apps are in Britain, with more

downloads here (at 81 million) than Germany (at 40 million) and France (also at

40 million) combined. With such unprecedented growth, clinic owners are asking

themselves would it be worth creating an app for their business?

There are both pros and cons that need to be weighed up before embarking on the

road to creating, developing and introducing an app into the marketplace.

First things first, creating an app isn’t cheap. Most clinics won’t have computer

wizards within their ranks and will need to hire an agency or a freelance developer

to build the app. A good developer will cost an average of £60-90 per hour, and

you can expect to pay for weeks rather than days of work. Similarly you’d be hard

pressed to get any reputable agency to build an app for under £10,000 and there is

no upper limit on what it can cost, with some popular apps rumoured to cost over

six figures to develop.

Adding to the potential cost is the fact that different smartphones have different

operating systems (OS) with Android and Apple leading the way in terms of market

share. According to research this year, Google’s Android system now has the largest

share of UK consumers at 36.9%, with Apple just behind at 28.5% (5). This is an

essential consideration for any clinic creating an app as it must be made separately

for each mobile platform, so there will need to be an iPhone version, an Android

version and even Windows Phone and Blackberry versions if you wish to achieve full

market coverage.

One of the biggest question marks over apps for clinics though has to be the

transient nature of the typical patient relationship. For cosmetic surgery clinics it is

unlikely that a patient is going to need to interact with the clinic often, other than at

the time of treatment, in which case the patient is unlikely to keep the app installed

on their mobile device even if they do download it.

For all that naysaying though, applications do have some specific advantages over

websites. Using push notifications (this is where an app user is alerted like a text

message), clinics can remind patients directly through their app about upcoming

appointments, special offers, and general clinic updates. Apps can also offer a

private channel of communication between patients and clinic staff if an individual

has privacy concerns about their email accounts.

Developing an app is a serious and costly undertaking that shouldn’t be entered

into lightly, and is likely to remain the domain of the multi clinic chains or groups for

the time being.

TURNING A MOBILE VISITOR INTO A CUSTOMER

While the decision to either plum for an application or to simply test and tweak

your website for mobile devices may be an easy one depending on the finances

at your disposal, there is one common objective for all online clinics: maximising

their conversion rates. Put simply, a conversion rate measures the percentage

of visitors to a website who go on to take an action. For online shops the action

is usually a purchase of some sort. For cosmetic clinics the goal is somewhat

different, with the aim being to get the visitor to email or phone the clinic to ask a

question and/or book an appointment.

For clinics wondering whether mobile visitors would go to the trouble of using

an email form on a website, the answer is emphatically yes. A year ago mobile

visitors to WhatClinic.com converted at just 61% of the average rate of visitors

to the site. Today they convert at 83% of the average rate, and soon there will be

no difference at all. And therein lies the secret. Mobile internet users are just the

same as “regular” internet users when a website works properly for them. They are

not just browsing while they’re on the tube or the bus. They are getting things

done, and if they take the time to visit your website you’re going to want them to

be able to take that all important action to contact your clinic as easily as if they

were on their computer at home.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF A GROWING MARKETEven though an app may currently be financially out of reach for most clinics, their

existing websites, perhaps with a few small changes, should be able to offer mobile

consumers everything they need to do their research and go on to make contact.

With increasing consumer usage of smartphones and tablets, clinics can no longer

afford to ignore the potential lost business resulting from an incompatible or unusable

website. After all, consumers using mobile phones to search and browse the internet

are like any other; if a website doesn’t work as expected they will just move on and find

another one. In the current economic climate can any clinic owner allow that to happen?

The key to dealing with these issues during the coming

months is managing employee expectations and forming a

strategy for any issues that could arise. Employment specialist

Dippalli Naik of Sydney Mitchell Solicitors suggests some

practical steps that can be taken to ensure a balance is struck

between the needs of a business and the enthusiasm of its

employees during this intense period:

TIMING

On game days, events will often be happening during normal

working hours. Therefore it is highly likely that employers will

face pressure from employees eager to support their country

at all times of the day. To deal with this, employers should

consider:

Be flexible – there is no legal right to take time off during •

the Olympics much to the chagrin of many people!

However employers can agree, where possible, temporary

flexible working arrangements such as altering start and

finish times during the working day using a rota and

extending the lunch hour. They can also allow employees

to make up missed hours on other days in the week.

If this is a viable option it is also important to remember •

those employees that are not interested in the Olympics

and ensure they are not disadvantaged by the working

arrangements – balance is key.

STAFF LEVELS

Depending on the nature of the business, employers may actually

need to consider whether additional staff are needed during

the Olympics. For example businesses in the hospitality and

transport industries may be directly affected by the games and

might experience an increase in workload to deal with the influx

of tourists and UK residents alike. If this is the case, employers

should note:

Temporary agency workers are now protected to some •

degree by the Agency Worker Regulations 2010 and will

gain certain rights immediately on hiring and after 12

weeks service. It may therefore be better to avoid using

agency workers and consider asking existing staff to agree

to temporarily vary their contracts to allow for more hours,

overtime or flexibility generally.

SICKNESS

It will not come as surprise to discover that sporting events

like the Olympics result in increased absence levels from

work, either because employees want to stay at home

and support their country or because they have been out

celebrating or commiserating too much! However the

effects of such absences can be very serious for a business so

employers need to:

Remind employees of the sickness absence policy and the •

repercussions for not following it, particularly in relation to

unauthorised absence.

Reiterate the policy for alcohol and drugs use to avoid •

employees coming to work hung over and therefore less

productive, taking time off to recover from a heavy night or

drinking on the work premises.

Determine whether an absence is related to the games •

or genuine – this can be addressed using return to work

Dippalli Naik of Sydney Mitchell Solicitors on the challenges employers may face during the Olympics

G O I N G f o r

G O L D

The Olympics are due to kick off next month on July 27 and will continue until August 12, followed swiftly by the Paralympics from August 29 to September 9 and already Olympic fever is building. However for employers the Olympics will present a number of challenges in the workplace, not least the possibility of increased absenteeism, loss of focus and concentration and heightened emotion, which could lead to clashes. There will also be employees who may not be interested in the games but who could still be affected by the actions of others.

COMMUNICATION

Talking to your employees openly about the Olympics and their plans during

the period can prevent many difficulties arising and increase morale. Why not

try one of the following:

Arrange a team talk to discuss with employees what they would like to do

during the working day and how they intend to manage their time. In this way

employers can make informed decisions about their resources.

Discuss with employees whether facilities can be provided or allowed at

work to accommodate the employees’ desires to watch certain events. Ideas

such as creating a TV room for people to watch matches at break times,

allowing radios to be on during the day and relaxing the internet policy so

that matches can be watched online have all been entertained by businesses

during previous sporting events.

MULTICULTURAL

Sports like the Olympics reflect the diverse society we all live in and will

engage people from all backgrounds, nationalities and races. The Olympics

presents an ideal opportunity for employees to bond with their employers

and each other and encourages friendly banter and camaraderie. However,

in all the excitement it is possible for people to overstep their boundaries and

comments about the games, the teams/individuals and the tactics could risk

turning into racial slurs, nationalistic harassment and discrimination. To avoid

this type of behaviour occurring, employers should focus on:

Treating all employees in the same way regardless of race, sex or nationality.

For example, if you allow Team GB supporters time off to watch a team event,

you should apply the same policy to non-GB nationals who want to watch

their own national team. Likewise, do not assume that only men will be

interested in the games and remember that those who are not interested in

them should still be treated fairly and not excluded from the festivities.

Publicising the equal opportunities policy and any non-harassment/bullying

policy to ensure employees are familiar with their obligations and understand

that any offensive behaviour will not be overlooked and will be dealt with

through a disciplinary process.

CONCLUSION

You may want to consider preparing a memo on how you intend to deal

with the Olympics and if you do this (with or without consultation with the

workforce) please ensure you take into account the above points. Any note

should avoid being overly complicated and you may want to speak to or pass

the note through your solicitor to ensure it is compliant with employment law.

This year’s Olympics will be the biggest sporting event to hit the UK in

living memory and this will exacerbate the intense feelings that come with

great sporting events. Whilst such a major event could pose problems for

businesses none of them are insurmountable and it can be used to engage

positively with employees, increase morale and encourage mutual respect

and goodwill. If nothing else it will lift the spirits of the UK during this tough

recession and encourage people to come together. So lets embrace it!

Medizen is a Premier award

Winning cosmetic and laser

hair removal clinic. medizen

have helped thousands of

men and Women to look

better and feel more confident over the last 10

years. registered with the treatments you can

trust scheme and the care Quality commission,

the friendly staff, excellent pre-procedure advice,

marvellous technology, and wonderful post-

procedure care, make medizen a truly desirable

aesthetic clinic. at the helm of this fabulous

enterprise is

medizen’s clinical

director is dr david

eccleston, spending a

day with this aesthetic

guru was a fascinating

voyage of discovery

and rejuvenation.

“i’ve always been

an early bird and a

typical day starts at 6.00am for me i normally

start my day with a cup of tea and then a banana

and handful of nuts, i recently went on a health

crusade and have lost more than ten kilos of

weight, the decision to do something about my

way was prompted from years of staring at the

suits in the back of my wardrobe and wondering

if i would ever ‘one day’ get back into them again,

this with the reality of almost turning 50 was

enough to give me the big kick up the backside

that i had needed after a decade of deliberation.

When breakfast is done i put in an appearance

at the gym around 7.am i never thought i’d be a

gym enthusiast less so one at 7am in the morning!

but never say never. clocking in at the gym daily

gives me the mental clarity i need to get through

the day, i am physically and mentally much

better off for having made the changes in my life

recently that i have.

my drive to work takes me ten minutes medizen

is located in mere green, sutton coldfield, in

Birmingham. i listen to radio 2 chris evans,

simply because i think it has the right mix of music

and irreverent chat.

i arrive in the morning usually around 9am once

in i think one of the first things i do is check

the diary and see how the day is shaped out for

me, i then meet

with our clinic

manager to discuss

any clinic issues

such as particular

patient enquiries,

staff sickness, staff

training, stock levels,

bonus schemes for

staff those kinds of

day to day issues.

once this is tidily

dealt with, it’s my

coffee time where i

chat with my lovely

receptionists and

aestheticians who fill me in on what’s been going

on front of house, they’re a lively bunch but an

essential part of the operation and without each of

them performing their roles medzien would not be

the place that it is.

i start my morning clinic by seeing a series of

patients for Botox, fillers, laser resurfacing, facial

sculpting and cosmetic consultations. medizen

has a broad spectrum of patients and clients

but we cater predominantly to 30-50 year old

mums, professional women and men, with

some footballers wives and girlfriends and local

celebrities. i can see anything from six to ten

patients myself in one morning clinic.

i break for lunch at the end of the morning clinic;

these days lunch for me usually consists of a

healthy salad or sandwich at my desk, but if i’m

lucky meet my wife for lunch. annie, my wife is

an aesthetic nurse Practitioner at medizen, we’ve

been together over 20 years and as a result have

two wonderful kids laura,17 nick, 16

since graduating from Birmingham university in

1987, to be a general practitioner of medicine i

have always held a deep-rooted special interest in

dermatology which has spanned over 20 years.

i believe i made the right career choice as my

profession allows me to utilise my artistic and

practical skills, plus i meet lots of lovely people

both as clients and colleagues. some of the ‘not

so great’ aspects of this job is having to break the

news to clients who have unrealistic expectations

in terms of what they are ‘aesthetically’ looking to

achieve, but i believe honesty and transparency is

the best approach and the safest for the patient.

a typical afternoon will be the much the same

as the morning, though i do a lot of clinical

trial work and am currently running studies on

lip enhancement, facial volumising, acne and

botulinum toxin. i will usually meet a colleague

or company rep a couple of times a month over

a longer lunch. at the moment i am spending

time on developing my training and media skills

in preparation for more travel and lecture tours

abroad. another great project i am working on

is human fibroblast transplantation for acne

scarring, there are some great developments

occurring in this area.

i do very much love my work and am inspired by

the work of tim flynn, koen de Boulle, mauricio

de maio. much like those guys i take great pride

in my work and i think one of my proudest

moments was being invited t south africa to train

fellow colleagues on toxin techniques. there is

much scope for improvement in our industry

and personally i would like to see some positive

changes transpire such as a stop to non-medical

personnel injecting toxins and fillers, i believe

a speciality such as cosmetic medicine should

only be accessible by trained nurses, doctors and

dentists. this industry does need tighter regulation

and i advocate the ban of remote prescribing - it

is unethical.

my average working week is around 50 hours, but

i think you tend to notice long working days less

if you love your work and enjoy positive results.

my day unwinds by retreating to the sanctuary of

home to fine food and wine, cooking, spending

time with family and friends, skiing, travelling and

spending time on my motor yacht, ‘Boatox’.

my reflection for today? take time out to smell

the coffee.

BOTOX® is licensed for the treatment of moderate to severe glabellar lines

Delivers long-lasting patient satisfaction, time after time2,3

Has been used for over 20 years in over 26 million treatment sessions worldwide6

Is the world’s first and most studied botulinum toxin*7

UK/1010/2011 Date of Preparation November 2011

BOTOX® (botulinum toxin type A) Abbreviated Prescribing InformationPresentation: Botulinum toxin type A (from clostridium botulinum), 50 or 100 or 200 Allergan Units/vial. Indications: Temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe vertical lines between the eyebrows seen at frown (glabellar lines), in adults <65 years, when the severity of these lines has an important psychological impact for the patient. Dosage and Administration: See Summary of Product Characteristics for full information. Do not inject into blood vessels. Doses of botulinum toxin are not interchangeable between products. Not recommended for patients <18 or >65 years. Use for one patient treatment only during a single session. Reconstitute vial with 1.25ml of 0.9% preservative free sodium chloride for injection (4U/0.1ml). The recommended injection volume per muscle site is 0.1ml (4U). Five injection sites: 2 in each corrugator muscle and 1 in the procerus muscle: total dose 20U. Contraindications: Known hypersensitivity to any constituent. Infection at proposed injection site(s). Warnings/Precautions: Relevant anatomy and changes due to prior surgical procedures must be understood prior to administration. Do not exceed recommended dosages and frequency of administration. Adrenaline and other anti-anaphylactic measures should be available. Reports of side effects related to spread of toxin distant from injection site, sometimes resulting in death. Therapeutic doses may cause exaggerated muscle weakness. Caution in patients with underlying neurological disorder and history of dysphagia and aspiration. Patients should seek medical help if swallowing, speech or respiratory disorders arise. Clinical fluctuations may occur during repeated use. Too frequent or excessive dosing can lead to antibody formation and treatment resistance. The previously sedentary patient should resume activities gradually. Caution in the presence of inflammation at injection site(s) or when excessive weakness/atrophy is present in target muscle. Caution when used for treatment of patients with peripheral motor neuropathic disease. Use with extreme caution and close supervision in patients with defective neuromuscular transmission (myasthenia gravis, Eaton Lambert Syndrome). Contains human serum albumin. Procedure related injury could occur. Interactions No interaction studies have been performed. No interactions of clinical significance have been reported. Theoretically, the effect may be potentiated by aminoglycoside antibiotics or other drugs that interfere with neuromuscular transmission. Effects of administering different botulinum toxin stereotypes simultaneously, or within several months of each other, is unknown and may cause exacerbation of excessive neuromuscular weakness. Pregnancy: BOTOX® should not be used during preganancy unless clearly necessary. Lactation: use during lactation cannot be recommended. Adverse Effects: See Summary of Product Characteristics for full information on side effects. Based on controlled clinical trial data, the proportion of patients that would be expected to experience an adverse reaction after treatment is 23.5% (placebo: 19.2%). In general, reactions occur within the first few days following injection and are transient. Pain/burning/stinging, oedema and/or bruising may be associated with the

injection. Frequency By Indication: Defined as follows: Very Common (> 1/10); Common (>1/100 to <1/10); Uncommon (>1/1,000 to <1/100); Rare (>1/10,000 to <1/1,000); Very Rare (<1/10,000).
