The Appeal The Costa Rica Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) are supporting devastated communities after Tropical Storm Nate caused widespread flooding across the country. 1,523,001 Swiss francs needed for urgent humanitarian relief 24,000 people in desperate need of help Costa Rica Floods Snapshot Tropical Storm Nate hit Costa Rica on 5 October 2017. The cumulative rainfall exceeded 400mm in Guanacaste, and ranged from 150 to 250mm in the Central Valley. This has caused devastating flooding, killing at least 11 people and affecting more than half a million more. The water supply, sanitation infrastructure and medical services have been badly affected, heightening the risk of waterborne diseases. The Red Cross response aims to provide 24,000 of the most vulnerable survivors with water, sanitation and hygiene support, shelter, livelihoods, including cash transfer programming, and restoring family links.
