Celebrations

Honour the Earth

• Fossil Fuel based energy use in SA is a course for concern

• EH is a global WWF CC initiative to create awareness to switch lights off for an hour

• The aim is to INSPIRE for 60 minutes and promote action to carry on beyond

• WWF-SA urges organizations to make public promise to make sustainable choices on:

• Food, water and energy use

Why take part in the EH?

• The 60 minutes is not enough hence the annual EHCC

• EHCC is initiative designed to mobilize action and support from Cities in the global transition towards 100% RE

• City must show plans for low carbon development, dramatically increasing the use of RE in the next few decades

• Even though CoT did not reach finals in 2013, /14 the plan is to continue reporting on cCCR (Carbonn CC Registry)

Earth Hour City Challenge (EHCC)… Lessons learnt

• The CoT to encourage participation by Communities and business

• SMS reminders to top management and Environmental & Sustainability forums on EH

• City residents and Officials to be encouraged to sign a “Pledge” at all Customer Care Centers committing to switching off their lights on 29 March 20h30 to 21h30

• Registering all the City’s planned activities on global EH initiatives register (www.earthhour.org)

Pre Earth Hour Actions Communication

• A candlelit “special MAYCO” during that hour at the City Hall- Energy, Food & Water Nexus

• 24 Buildings city owned & leased to be switched off on 29 March during the hour (list available)

• Street lights from beginning of Francis Baard to Hatfield will be switched off during the Hour

• Enhanced patrolling and security around the identified areas during thr hour

29 March 2014 between 20:30 to 21:30

• Electronic poster on the CoT inter and intranet a week before the event

• Pamphlets with Earth Hour messaging to be distributed at all customer care centers

• Procurement of Tshwane Branded Candles to be distributed in the planned “special MAYCO” and participating restaurants in CoT malls:• Kollonade, Centurion Mall, Menlyn Mall,

Woodlands , Hatfield Plaza
