Coterena was founded in 1990 with staff from the well-known Engine Manufactur-ing Company DEUTZ (pre-viously known as BARRERAS lic. DEUTZ), lately growing with the Technicians from the well-known company Talleres Baliño, S.A., after the close of that company, with the idea of continuing service maintenance and general re-pairs for Diesel Engines.
From the beginning, the company has increased its services, dealing with all me-chanical peripherals and de-vices with regard to engines, machinery in general, and also extending its activity to Inland Power Plants like Co-generation Engines, reach-ing a potential of certain im-portance that places us in a position of the first order on our market.
The versatility of Coterena’s technicians allows us to deal with repairs integral repara-tions. Through regular training, they are able to work with older mechanisms, still in use, as well as newer systems and the latest developments.
Apart from that, we offer to-tal traceability of our services both in time and method of workmanship. We guarantee a specific and continual treat-ment for each type of repair, installation or commissioning. Coterena has a large database at its disposal and thanks to this, we can detect the state of each machine, optimise its perfor-mance and insure its availabil-ity. It allows us to predict break-downs and offer personalised information about machine performance.

Our work philosophy goes along to understand the repair process through tree basic actuation lines.
Predictive maintenance:
Predictive maintenance al-lows a convenient sched-uling of corrective main-tenance, and prevents unexpected failures. The condition monitoring looks for predicting future trend of the equipment’s condi-tions showing “the right information in the right time”. The maintenance can be better planned and what would had been “unplanned stops” are trans-formed to shorter and fewer “planned stops” thus increasing plant availability.
Preventive maintenance:
Preventive maintenance means the care of maintain-ing equipment and facilities in satisfactory operating conditions. This maintenace model needs the timming of manufacturer’s recomen-dations or machine hystoric failure analysis.
Corrective maintenance:
Corrective maintance is known as “hysteric main-tenance”, it means a quick response in a failure.
Proactivemaintenance:
Combining the load moni-toring techniques (torque, bending and thrust) in real time, based on the ex-tensiometric techniques along with the monitoring of the parameters of the process, and the early de-tection through vibration test, shows a step forward on the predictive mainte-nance finding out the caus-es that provoke the wear and tear or failure of the equipments.

We are experienced in the repair of 2 and 4 stroke en-gines in marine and land-based stationary applica-tions as well as in traction vehicles.

Along with gearboxes we develop installations, com-missionings and repair of variable pitch and azimuth propeller equipment, as well as their control sys-

We install, repair and main-tenance all sort of machin-ery associate to the manip-ulation of loads, handlings, elevation and pullers or
manipulation of sticks and fishing tackles, by means of cables or chains, so much in the fishing vessels or cargo ships.
We work with all periph-eral elements in the En-gine Room connected to thermal engines like centrifugal separators, air compressors, heat ex-
changers, radiators, all types of pumps, etc. We also work on fuel treat-ment systems and their corresponding control equipment.

Technical Department
Due to the dedication and experience of our staff, our technical de-partment is one of the consultants to both ship owners and shipyards. Apart from giving in-ternal technical advice, our engineers offer their services to the sector in general, especially to the naval sector.
We carry out studies in automation, plans for preventive mainte-nance, and the modifi-
cation and updating of engines, gear boxes and all types and brands of propellers. We also col-laborate with other tech-nical departments to de-velop installation plans, mainly in the design of propulsion installations.
Looking towards the future, the technical department analyses and promotes the needs of R+D, whose de-velopment has greatly ad-vanced the updating of our company. In this respect,
the collaboration with Vigo University has been very re-warding. Together we have taken on various projects including increased produc-tivity, energy efficiency and the reduction of pollutant emissions. We are develop-ing among other things, measuring systems, monitor-ing and torque recording, bending moment, thrust, power, hydraulic parame-ters (pressure, flow, tempera-ture), GPS speed and course and the specific emission of global warming gases (No
x).

Our Innovation Lab (Techonolgy+innovation) was born from the fusion of skill and experience in the Technical department. Working with the latest computer applications and technologies, we can measure and record the huge amount of data and parameters that nowadays hide the problems causes. With our condition moni-toring & parameters register equipment we provide an instantly and clear observa-tion of all process param-eters that also allow us the analysis of them.
The Innovation Lab is responsible for developing measuring systems, monitoring and the recording of process parameters. The individual needs of the client are always catered for. When dealing with monitoring systems, takt times, simultaneity...etc we can be extremely flexible in portable times according to the needs analysis.

Any equipment related with the use of energy (ther-mic engines, windturbines transformation plants..) are susceptible to incorporate measure and control sys-tems to easy the knowledge of the state and efficiency grade.
Monitoring Department has the necessary tools to measure, compare, evalu-ate and connect all the significant data that per-
mit the localization of the problems inside the instal-lation and the optimiza-tion of any equipment, with the aim to improve so far the global output as its adaptation to the law re-quirements.
The ability of the equipment allows the analysis “in situ” of the behaviour of any system in real time, directly or wire-less, including:

Monitoring and Performance Analysis (M.P.A.)
Propulsion equipment, in-tegrating shaft power meas-urement, propeller pitch, rudder angle, vessel speed (GPS), position of the hull (yaw, compass turn) and trajectories, where different loads and operating direc-tions are measured and recorded in real time. The tests of the vessel’s manoeu-vrability are also recorded as Evolutions, Zig-Zag, Crash stop etc.
Power transmission sys-tems (gearboxes), in which it is necessary to analyse the instantane-ous evolution of torque in infinitesimal periods, with machinery of high resolution; and with the capacity of connecting this evolution with the ad-justment parameters that regulate the process.
For example, the relationship that exists between the clutch, inversion or brake torques with hydraulic pressure, flow, or the clutch valve proportional signal in real time, during clutch, inversion of brake operations through the torque analysis helps to optimize times and cut down on transitory overloads.

Extensiometric Telemetry
This technic allows the measurement of mechani-cal strains through strain gauges (Wheatstone bridge) adhered to the shaft under test, transmitting wireless signals.
Using programs developed on site, we can determine mechanical loads in any direction on a continuous basis and/or connected to other parameters.
1. Traction: Loads on pure traction elements (pull)
2. Compression: Loads on static or dynamic supports (push)
3. Shaft bending: i. Pure bending moment in

In view of the environ-mental laws, the gases analysis allows the con-trol of the combustion efficiency with the end to adapt the equipments to the current international laws, to reduce the global warming gases and also the possibility to control and improve the output of the combustion of the equipment and/or to verify the efficiency of the repairs.
Our integral system of our own development to measure the contami-nated emissions accord-ing to the Technical Code MARPOL using the portable gases ana-lyzers associated to the power measurement and consume, allows us to determine the specific quantity of NO
x, CO
2, CO
and SOx by unit of power
in real time.

For the assembly of power transmission lines, with re-ferred to the alignment, flexion, bearing load, we have at our disposal con-ventional mechanical means like dial indicators and the latest technology. Some examples are:
Alignments and Bearing Loads
Laser alignment systems, used to align shafts or bear-ings, in global installations or in different machine parts such as components of pro-peller equipment or engine crankcases.
Systems for in situ load in-spections (Jack Load Test)with logging and monitoring of force and displacement parameters. In this way, we can analyse the alignments according to pre-established calculation values, guaran-teeing their use in function with the rational alignment calculations.
Dynamic measuring sys-tems of the bending mo-ment, connecting it with the default values for the rational alignment calcu-lations. This system is very useful when the lack of clearance in the bearings does not allow viewing of the shaft elevation during jack load tests. This may occur with shafts sup-ported by roller bearings or to check the real per-formance of loads on run-ning shafts under different working conditions.
