In this month’s edition . . .

In March the quiet rush of events and diary dates begins – a hint of the fetes, fairs and exhibitions to come. This month we have a section highlighting some of the concerts and local musical events in our area – a number of these are quite special and if you are a music fan, do check them out. We feature the amazing Gloucestershire Vintage & County Extravaganza, and the huge range of local charities that this group of volunteers support each year. The event runs for three days and if you haven’t been before, this local event is too good to miss. Our Regular items this month include book reviews from Borzoi Books in Stow, comments on tax from Robb Eden, some interesting news on Planning (it’s that time of year!) and some informative council reports – worth a look!I know it’s early but I have my fingers crossed that March winds and April showers WILL bring forth May flowers!

12 | COTSWOLD TIMES

Now hailed as one of the greatest albums of all time, when it was released in March 1973,‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ proved an immediate critical and commercial success, turning Pink Floyd into one of the biggest bands in the world, with an ever-growing following and mass critical acceptance. A brilliant concept piece, the progressive, ground-breaking music contained on the album was coupled with bassist Roger Waters’s deeply personal lyrics exploring themes of alienation, materialism, the passing of time, insanity and death. At the height of Pink Floyd’s popularity in the 1970s, the band’s visually-arresting album covers and iconic imagery perfectly complemented the music within the grooves. And nowhere is the richness and intrigue of Pink Floyd’s visual appeal more apparent than the cover for ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’. Created by London-based photography and design studio, Hipgnosis, an innovative, visionary collective consisting of Aubrey Powell, Storm Thorgerson, and Peter Christopherson, the cover art for the album depicted a beam of white light passing through a prism to form the rainbow colours of the spectrum, set against a completely black background.Wanting to get away from the pictorial covers of their previous albums, the band (David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Richard Wright and Nick Mason), offered Hipgnosis little or no creative direction, other than to do “something simple, clean and elegant”. The original design emerged from Powell’s and Thorgerson’s habit of engaging in late night/early morning creative sessions, a practice that often yielded impressively fertile results. One such night, Powell showed Thorgerson an old, French book of early colour photography from the 1950s: a picture of a prism resting on a page of sheet music (with sunlight from a glass window hitting it and creating a rainbow effect), caught Powell’s eye - and Thorgerson’s imagination. His idea was to build a visual connection to the band’s impressive light shows, as used on their tours, creating the design as a graphic, not a photograph. Hipgnosis’ graphic designer, George Hardie, worked on the demonstration layouts and, along with seven other rough draft ideas, the prism design was presented to the band, who approved the concept almost immediately. Roger Waters suggested that the image extend across the inner gatefold and include the additional visual representation of a heartbeat (such as you would see on a hospital monitor). This would reflect the sound of the beating heart, heard at the beginning and end of the album.Artistically, for the cover art, the prism was air-brushed black

on white, then reversed out, and the spectrum graphic was created as a mechanical tint-lay in black and white with colour instructions. In reality, light passing through a prism breaks up into seven colours – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet (the colours of the rainbow) - but George Hardie found that the indigo was too close to the violet and therefore virtually indistinguishable to the eye: the indigo was dropped from the graphic, leaving a spectrum of just six colours! As with earlier releases, ‘Atom Heart Mother’, ‘Meddle’ and ‘Obscured By Clouds’ (and again to record company EMI’s reluctance and confusion), the band was adamant that there was to be no mention of the band’s name or album title on the sleeve: indeed, the band themselves refused to offer any explanations as to what the cover image meant, preferring fans to come up with their own interpretation. Higpnosis added further apparently-cryptic photographs and images to the package with the creation of the inserts and posters that fans found when they opened the album, including an infrared photo of the Great Pyramids at Giza, taken by Thorgerson himself on a moonlit night in Egypt, and two, pyramid-themed stickers. The triangular outlines of the pyramids connected to the prism shape on the front cover and were symbolic of man’s vaulting ambition and greed, themes touched upon in Waters’s lyrics. In this day and age of digital streaming and downloads - as we listen to our music on our phones and computers - it’s easy to forget how iconic vinyl sleeve art could be - its 12-inch gatefold sleeves, inner bags and lyric sheets. In the 1970s, the cover art of an album was just as important to a fan as was the music inside. ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ turned Pink Floyd into major stars, remained on the Billboard charts in the U.S. for 741 weeks from 1973 to 1988 and industry sources claim that worldwide sales total approximately 50 million copies and still sells between 8,000 and 9,000 copies every week. It is estimated that over a billion people have seen the cover image.

All 4 magazines for 1 priceIt’s only a few weeks away, the start of the new tax year is moving ever closer. At that time the personal tax threshold will be increasing to £11,850 & the amount of money you

can earn before paying a higher rate of tax will be set at £46,350. Luckily enough self-employed workers will again be spared the much discussed changes to reporting. It had been proposed that accounts be submitted on a quarterly rather than an annual basis but Parliament has decided that HMRC’s drive to introduce this is premature as the systems to monitor the changes are not in place. It will happen though – HMRC have been told to push through digitisation, a policy that is going to leave millions out on a limb as they are not yet fully au fait with computers or the internet.

One reason to be cautious about digitisation is the numerous mistakes being made by HMRC which are affecting both individuals & businesses. Just one area of concern is debt collection as it is becoming more and more difficult to talk to anyone at HMRC as they don’t answer their phones, they won’t correspond via e-mail & if you write a letter it can sometimes take months for a reply. Even if you do manage to speak to someone it can take ages to correct figures they’ve miscalculated. The latest problem & it’s a big one is where someone has set-up a payment arrangement. Weeks after setting up the arrangement letters arrive demanding payment of outstanding tax with the threat of debt collectors if it’s not paid. On further investigation, it transpires that if the arrangement is in place before the debt is due the HMRC computer will ignore the arrangement & chase you for the amount in full. Only when this is overridden by a human being the problem is solved!

Jeremy Musson will be talking about and signing Secret Houses of the Cotswolds at The Manor, Notgrove, on Thursday 8th March at 6pm. Tickets: £5 each to include refreshments. RSVP to us by phone or email.

Our Highlights of the MonthFICTION Clare Mackintosh, the best-selling author of the psychological thrillers I Let You Go and I See You, reveals her latest, Let Me Lie. Other thrillers come from Robert Goddard and Edward Wilson, whose previous espionage novels we have much admired. The pick of the paperbacks is The Music Shop by Rachel Joyce.

BIOGRAPHY AND HISTORY Investigative journalist Tom Bower turns his attention to Prince Charles in Rebel Prince; if you would like a signed copy (by the author, not HRH!), let us know. Tim Marshall, whose Prisoners of Geography is one of our bestsellers, now looks at why we are Divided: Why We’re Living in an Age of Walls. The latest wide-ranging survey from Neil MacGregor is of Living with the Gods: 40,000 Years of Peoples, Objects and Beliefs. Pearls Before Poppies: The Story of the Red Cross Pearls by Rachel Trethewey sounds like a fascinating story.

HOUSES AND GARDENS There are lots of new books about great houses, gardens and gardening. In A Slice of England, India Hicks describes her family’s homes and her own new house in Oxfordshire. There are Paradise Gardens from Monty Don as well as books about Walled Gardens, Peonies and Double Flowers. The new Yellow Book will be available by 1st March.

EQUINE Two self-recommending titles: The Girl on the Dancing Horse by the Olympic dressage star Charlotte Dujardin, and The Jumping Game: How National Hunt Trainers work and what makes them tick by Henrietta Knight.

A MISCELLANY Picasso and Leonardo da Vinci feature large on the Art front. The prolific John Lewis-Stempel writes about a year in The Life and Times of Cockshutt Wood. Richard Holloway (A Little History of Religion) reflects on life and death in Waiting for the Last Bus. New cookery books include a River Cottage Handbook on Cheese and Dairy, and Venice: Four Seasons of Home Cooking.

TEENAGE AND CHILDREN World Book Day falls on 1st March and as usual we will have the special £1 books. Authors include John Green, Clare Balding and Julian Clary and stories about Paddington and Marvel Avengers. We also have a special catalogue of new books especially for our younger readers. Our pick of the month is a new Michael Morpurgo story, Flamingo Boy,

about a young autistic boy living in the South of France during the Second World War who finds his life falling apart when the Germans invade his town.

From Stow on the Wold Police Station – Thefts from Vehicles across the North CotswoldsBetween 1 and 3 February 2018 there were six parked cars in village and rural locations that fell victim to thefts. These took place from Aldsworth in South, to Paxford in the North.

Please make members of your community aware of this type of crime and advise them to take steps not to fall victim to it. Please advise your community to ensure they lock their vehicles, do not leave valuable items on display in their cars, and wherever possible park in well observed areas. Plans approved to develop Shipston hospital

PLANS have been announced to develop Ellen Badger Hospital in Shipston on Stour in order to introduce further services. The work is expected to be completed by April 2018.

This £500,000 refurbishment is the first phase of a longer term development plan bringing more services to the local community, including an enhanced inpatient facility at the Hospital. Working closely with the League of Friends of Ellen Badger Hospital the Trust is planning to expand the site onto land adjacent to the hospital. The Trust will be consulting partners and members of the community at dedicated events, encouraging people to share their views and give feedback.

The League of Friends are actively supporting these plans and have gifted £635,000 to the Trust. Jayne Blacklay, director of development said: “We will be working very closely with the League of Friends of Ellen Badger Hospital and local GPs, and I would like to thank them for their continued support.” The doctors will also continue to look for opportunities to develop a new Medical Centre.

Frances French, chairman of the League of Friends, said: “The League are absolutely delighted that SWFT have acquired this land. We are very grateful to two local legacies which have made our contribution to this exciting opportunity possible.

“We know this development is in line with the NHS goal of treating people as close to their communities as possible. It will enhance health and wellbeing for all those in Shipston and the surrounding twenty-two villages.

Cllr Dr Nigel Moor: An outline of the budget adopted by Gloucestershire County Council for 2017/18Setting a budget for a county as diverse as Gloucestershire is a difficult balancing act. Political parties have different priorities and different parts of the county have different needs and expectations. The budget for adult care, public health and children and families takes up nearly two thirds of the total revenue budget of £497.682 million and is always under pressure from rising demand, but these priorities need to be balanced in areas like the Cotswolds with the need for highways and flood prevention.

Whilst protecting the most vulnerable people in our communities the budget also sets out a good basis for continuing improvements to the county`s infrastructure. The revenue budget for communities and infrastructure is £83 million – to that should be added a forward capital budget of over £200 million.

Highlights of the Budget 2017/18 :•Although the Police and Crime Commissioner has withdrawn from the Gloucestershire Road Safety Partnership, GCC values this service and has allocated an additional £390,000 to ensure that its valuable work continues.

•Additional specialists to work alongside extra social workers to improve practice including a focus on mental health and adoption – £500,000

•Money to improve the process for traffic regulation orders to help keep our county moving – £100,000

•An additional £10,000 for every county councillor’s local budget (between £20k & £30k) in the highways local scheme – £530,000

•Extra investment in highways – £9 million to continue our programme of resurfacing rather than just filling pot holes.

•An additional £500,000 for the lengthsman’s scheme, which provides dedicated crews to work with town and parish councils (eg: to clear verges, clean out grips and gulleys, and clean signage) have proved very popular and there will now be a dedicated team for each of the six district areas in the county.

•Extra support for people with disabilities including tackling disability hate crime – £400,000

• Investment to improve adults’ physical and mental health whilst reducing social isolation and loneliness, including social prescribing – £600,000

Previous changes to the draft budget were proposed in February after feedback from local people. These include: earlier help for people struggling with mental health, extra support for those with dementia being discharged from hospital; additional funding to help meet demand in other areas of adult social care.

Tackling domestic abuse and preventing family breakdown receives an extra £800,000 investment, with another £320,000 support for vulnerable women. The council will also spend extra money on more foster carers, especially those who want to adopt, to provide safe and loving homes for children in care. The budget outlines more money for social workers and support for children in care, including intensive recovery and intervention, investments in employment and transitions for people with learning disabilities, more mental health professionals.

Gloucestershire currently charges £41/year less than the average county council, including the adult care levy, and £157 per year less than the highest. For an average band D household the proposed total increase will be £45.25 per year, or £3.77 per month. The extra investment comes mainly from additional central government grants and an increase to the council tax rate.

Nigel Moor represents the Stow on the Wold Division of Gloucestershire County Council at Shire Hall.

Local plan consultation in the CotswoldsThe district council is consulting the public on main modifications to the Local Plan over a six-week period between Monday, 19 February and 31 March. (The Cotswold District Local Plan was examined in public towards the end of 2017.)

The modifications are considered necessary to ensure that the local plan is a legally-compliant document. They involve:

• changes to the wording of certain policies and supporting text are proposed, and

• adjustments to the policies map and some of the insets.

Cabinet member for Forward Planning Cllr Nicholas Parsons said: “The consultation invites the public to submit representations solely on these Modifications and not on any other parts of the plan, which have been independently and exhaustively examined over the past seven months or so.”

The public can download copies of the modifications, associated papers and representation forms - as well as make representations online – on the district council website www.cotswold.gov.uk. Residents can also register and submit comments online at: http://consult.cotswold.gov.uk.

Documents can be also inspected at CDC’s offices in Cirencester and Moreton-in-Marsh, and at libraries across Cotswold District.

New report highlights boom time for tourism in Cotswolds

Tourism is booming across The Cotswolds, according to a newly-published report which shows that during 2016 there were over twenty million days of visits to

the area and total visitor-related business turnover was in excess of one billion pounds.

The report, compiled by the South West Research Company Ltd, also showed that tourism was responsible for 8% of employment across the wider area – with businesses in the Cotswold District Council area reaching as high as 15% of employment – and is valuable evidence of the importance of the tourism industry.

During 2016 tourists spent over £373 million on accommodation within the area, another £157 million on local attractions and entertainments, and about £100m on travel. Other significant facts included the impact of tourism on local shopping and the food and drink sector with these being worth 18% and 22% of visitor spend respectively.

Reviewing the figures, Chris Jackson of Cotswolds Tourism Partnership commented:

“This is a valuable report which underlines the importance of tourism to the economic well-being of the Cotswolds and for all sectors of the local economy to work together to promote tourism. The South West Research Company also looked at tourism patterns and it was interesting to note the 12% increase in overseas staying visitors with increased spend at 9%. Working with all local authorities across the wider Cotswolds area under the Cotswolds Tourism partnership, the tourism sector must continue to adapt to meet visitors’ needs now and for the future. The partnership needs to market and promote the area to show visitors the hidden gems and experiences visitors may not know about; this can spread visitors across the lesser known towns which will continue to stimulate the local economy into the future.

“We are lucky to live and work here and, with businesses expanding and diversifying all the time, it helps us promote the Cotswolds as a surprising destination. We know it takes a lot to beat the Cotswolds as a great holiday destination for all ages – we’ve got magnificent countryside to explore, charming market towns to visit, a rich heritage and history to investigate, diverse cultural attractions and top quality sporting facilities, and year-round events.

“Cotswolds Tourism Partnership will continue to work with Visit England and Visit Britain to promote the area through trade shows, media visits and social media, and if any businesses in the wider tourism sector wish to get involved with us please see www.cotswolds.com/partnership

20 | COTSWOLD TIMES

This is the time of year when budgets are debated and set for the coming year, and local councils watch over their shoulders to see how their neighbours are doing in balancing the books between council tax charges, operating costs and fees - which can be kept at the 2017 figures and which can be increased without attracting too much attention? Cotswold District Council, who attract substantial development bonuses from the Government each year, have agreed to freeze their share of residents’ council tax for 2018-19, and provided some stunning percentages and information to support the figures – ‘taking the average annual inflation rate into account, this represents a real terms reduction of about 45%, saving tax payers about £50 per year.’ That is impressive! In addition, the Council agreed the following: • Continuation of the freeze on parking charges at all CDC-owned car parks. • Extension of the ‘free after 3 pm’ parking scheme until the end of March 2019 at selected car parks across the District, including in Bourton-on-the-Water, Cirencester, Moreton-in-Marsh, Stow-on-the-Wold, and Tetbury. • An initial allocation of up to £300,000 to extend the network of Electronic Vehicle Charging Points in the Cotswolds. • Each Ward Member will receive an allocation of £1,000 to help fund local youth activities. • Continuation of the freeze on the cost of garden waste licences. • No cuts to frontline services.

Credit where its dueCDC Deputy Leader Cllr Nick Parsons commented: “Nearly all the local authorities in the UK are increasing their share of the council tax bill, but I am delighted to say that we can maintain our price freeze in the Cotswolds. I am sure that residents will be very pleased to hear this news.“Those working on behalf of the Council are always mindful of the need to keep our costs down, and I am extremely grateful for the efforts of the CDC staff as they continue to innovate and find savings without any detriment to our services. Working with partner councils, we are on target to share in collective savings of £5.6 million per year by 2020 –these savings are vital to ensure that we can continue to provide excellent value for money.”

Other things that you might wish to be aware of – and maybe share your views with the appropriate people! ► Have your say on A417‘missing link’Highways England is launching a consultation into options for the A417 ‘Missing Link’ and you can have your say. The public consultation into the route options for this particular stretch of the road will run until 29 March. www.a417missinglink.co.uk► Consultation on Local Plan Main Modifications (from the press office at CDC)

The Cotswold District Local Plan was examined in public towards the end of 2017. The District Council will now be consulting the public on ‘Main Modifications’ to the Plan which are considered necessary to ensure that the Local Plan is a ‘sound’ and legally-compliant document. These propose changes to the wording of certain policies and supporting text, as well as adjustments to the policies map and some of the insets. Cllr Nicholas Parsons: “The consultation invites the public to submit representations – solely on these Modifications and not on any other parts of the Plan, which have been independently and exhaustively examined over the past seven months or so.”NB. Representations must be made on a standard form and should focus on the Modifications. Representations must be submitted to CDC by no later than 5 pm on Wednesday 4 April 2018.

Photo ComPetition – August 2017

Each year we enjoy putting the Photo Competition together, finding new and unusual things to photograph in familiar places. The competition is designed to encourage people to get out and discover a little more about this wonderful corner of the Cotswolds – and we are always delighted by the number of readers who take part – residents, visitors and holiday makers! This year we were aware that the businesses were not having their ‘best time’, and the magazine itself was experiencing difficulties as we came to terms with losing Chris Turner at the end of November 2016. (In our small team, being one man short made a huge difference!). Unfortunately this combination meant that a number of the prizes that were planned and expected, weren’t realised. We stretched the timetable but the situation didn’t improve. This was very disappointing, and when enquiries came in from the notified winners as to when they would receive a prize, we reluctantly had to admit that the Competition was not going to achieve its aims. NB. We have a few prizes and we are sending a list to the notified winners of the Photo Competition 2017, for them to select their prize. Our apologies for the time this has taken, and the disappointment experienced. We have already thought through how to avoid this happening again. The competition wont change, but we will be changing the backroom organisation to ensure that the Photo Competition is fit for purpose! For 2018 and beyond! If you would like to be part of it, please let me know.

Moreton in Marsh’s Threatened Allotments.(09 February 2018)

I write, first of all, to register my complete agreement with, and support for, the views expressed by Terry Platten in the last edition of the Cotswold Times.

I know Terry as a fellow allotment holder and know the he’s working tirelessly to protect our apparently endangered allotment gardens. I for one, am very grateful to him.

The last time we were faced with the prospect of having our allotments, in effect, taken away from us was in the 80’s, and I got quite involved that time around but, I fear, I am a bit past that now.

As the sole holder of the same allotment plot on the Croft site in Moreton since 1981, I would appreciate the opportunity to add a few purely personal points of my own.

Moreton has increased in population very significantly over recent years and it is therefore necessary, indeed essential, that the Town Council keeps in touch and considers all possibilities with regard to possible provision and maintenance of various facilities for the general good of the towns people. These possibilities are many and varied and I know that it is not easy!

However, I personally, feel strongly that when we come to prioritise these facilities, if it is done in a truly democratic way, maintenance of adequate good quality allotment gardens will be ‘Top of the pops’ by a country mile. Further, I also believe that the overall demand for access to good quality working allotments may well increase in the fairly near future. Anyhow, I just want our Town Council to remember that we are still a democracy and that means that they should talk to the people that they represent, early in any debate, i.e. before planning anything.

Let me now try to state the present position as briefly as possible, in so far as I understand it. Moreton presently has three actual allotment sites:

1. University site; some 80 plots, mainly 10 pole in size (22 yards x 11 yards or approx. 20m x 10m).

2. Croft site; 60 plots again 10 pole in general, but with some smaller and some larger (roughly half or double the area of the standard plot).

3. Hospital Road site; some 20 ‘small’ plots, certainly not more that half standard size.

The overall use of plots is rather more than 80% at present. It is the Croft site which is being considered by our Town Council for some, as yet, unspecified change of use.

Now, there is a small package of land to the east of the town which is at present set aside for future expansion to the town’s burial ground, which it abuts. This land is presently, and has been used for some years, to train and encourage children and young people to play football. This, I would suggest, is an excellent interim use of the land and should continue.

Now, it is this piece of future burial ground or at least part of it that the town council is proposing to offer the Croft Allotment holders, in effect, as appeasement for seeing their long established productive allotments destroyed.

My thoughts in a nutshell:

1. Burial land should be kept up together as far as possible. Future rate of demand can only increase as the town’s population increases.

2.The earmarked burial land appears to be totally unsuitable for

future allotments. Virtually all trees and shrubs, in, and abutting, such land are evergreens of one sort or another - not really suitable land for vegetable growing.

3. There is no vehicular access, nor would it be easy, or even possible, to provide. Real allotments need (and get) ‘muck’, lots of it, delivered by local farmers using very large tractors and trailers.

4. It simply dismays me that our Town Council appears to think that it could create actual productive allotments simply by printing the word ‘allotment’ across a sheet of paper. It really doesn’t work like that! Our present day allotments are the result of many decades of hard physical work, and no little thought, meticulous planning and the continual application of ‘muck’! A glance at the 1922 Allotments Act, or any of the allotment books available, will help to understand the history and tradition involved. The ‘standard’ 10 pole plot was accepted, virtually universally, throughout the UK because it was considered to be the minimum area required for a ‘ working man’ to be able to grow sufficient vegetables for ‘himself and his immediate family’.

5. I am hopeful that we, Moreton’s allotment holders, will see off this threat. I believe that there is still adequate legislation enshrined in English Law for this express purpose. There is, after all, no higher priority for land use than the growing of food.

6. Finally, working on an allotment is a good and healthy thing to do. Our Government encourages us to take physical exercise in order to stay fit and health for longer and, also, to eat a healthy diet (i.e. rich in vegetables) for the same overall purpose.

‘Allotmenteering’ helps in both of these aims, and is good fun.

Letter from Kate AllenDear Editor, (04 February 2018)

I have just been to my allotment on the Croft Site in Morten-in-Marsh. I was very distressed to discover there is a possibility of the land being used to create a car park.

I have only had my allotment for a year, but it has become an important part of my life and it is a fantastic place for me to unwind after a hectic day’s teaching.

The site is very special: the soil is fantastic, the other allotment holders are very helpful and there is always a beautiful breeze blowing there.

As I was digging this morning I could hear many birds singing. I dug up dozens of fat, juicy worms for them. We need to protect our allotments to help protect our birds and wildlife. This quote is from the BBC website:

‘According to the report, carried out by experts from organisations such as the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and the British Trust for Ornithology, there are an estimated 166 million birds nesting in the UK today compared with 210 million in 1966.

Experts believe this is largely down to changes in landscape providing less habitat in which birds can feed and nest.’

We are all aware of the vital part that bees play in our food chain and the allotment is providing a fantastic environment for bees and other insects.

The allotment is not just for allotment holders. Whenever I am

there I see people walking through with their dogs and parents walking with their children. I myself

often walk through the allotments as it is part of a very pleasant round walk through the town - up Evenlode Road, through the allotments and over the railway bridge.

I truly believe that if the Croft Site land is used for a car park or other purposes, other than for allotments, it will be a great loss not only to the allotment holders, but to many people in the town and our local wildlife.

I very much hope that if a new car park is needed that a brown field site is found, rather than this very special environment. The Croft Site is an intergral part of many people’s lives

and is an important area for the biodiversity of Moreton-in-Marsh. Allotments not only provide a habitat for wildlife, but growing ones own vegetables is important for the environment.

The food miles used to grow ones own produce is minimal compared to the fuel used to transport fruit and vegetables from farms in the UK or abroad to our kitchens. I truly hope that

the Moreton town council can start a campaign to encourage more people to grow their own vegetables and have the foresight to plan to increase the number of allotment sites in the town, rather than concrete over them.

Yours faithfullyKate Allen

Broadway Golf Club Captains – Charity Fundraising

BROADWAY Golf Club’s outgoing captains, Jim Hutchison and Brenda Corfield ended their year of office in style when they announced the total charity funds collected during 2017.

Jim Hutchinson appeal was for the charity Bloodwise, who research cures for all blood cancers and providing information and advice to anyone worried about blood cancer. £2830 was raised by Club Members.

An additional £525 was raised earlier in the year by Broadway member Bill Cook.

Alison Corfield raised £3168.88 for her chosen charity, St Richard’s Hospice. Her choice was dictated by the care the Hospice give to patients and families in Worcestershire who are living with life-limiting illnesses, providing the best quality of life possible.

Members’ fundraising efforts for 2018 will focus on supporting club captain, Bernard Donoghue and ladies captain, Maggie McDivitt and their respective charities of Sue Ryder and Cobalt.

Really useful advice from Take Five To Stop Fraud Week

Neighbourhood Watch is proud to be supporting Take Five To Stop Fraud Week.

Take Five To Stop Fraud Week is part of the national campaign from Financial Fraud Action UK and the Government, backed by the banking industry coming together to tackle fraud.

The advice being issued this week is really simple but it can stop you becoming a victim of fraud.

A genuine bank or organisation will never contact you out of the blue to ask for your PIN, full password or to move money to another account. Only give out your personal or financial details to use a service that you have given your consent to, that you trust and that you are expecting to be contacted by.

Don’t be tricked into giving a fraudster access to your personal or financial details. Never automatically click on a link in an unexpected email or text.

Always question uninvited approaches in case it’s a scam. Instead, contact the company directly using a known email or phone number.

We need your help The Parking Working Group (PWG), Morteton Town Council (MIMTC) and Gloucestershire County Council (GCC) are formulating a strategy to improve our town by removing the 200 plus cars that currently park all day in the centre of Moreton. This strategy will include the provision of a new

car park for the “all-day parkers” and parking controls that stop all day parking in the centre of town except qualifying businesses and residents. This will improve life for town centre residents and enhance visitor parking for businesses.

The PWG is made up of town centre, side street residents and businesses but we need volunteers from all parts of Moreton to represent the needs and views of individual streets as cars which move from central areas may be displaced into surrounding areas.

This is your chance to represent your street and to help shape the future of our town. If you want your opinions to be heard and your ideas to be included in the strategy please let us know now!

SHAKESPEARE comes to MORETON in MARSH!

The Shakespeare Hospice provides palliative and supportive care to over 1000 patients and their families across South Warwickshire and the North Cotswolds, including Moreton in Marsh. Last year, the hospice supported over 1000 people from the area. The Shakespeare Hospice, based in Stratford upon Avon, provides a Day Hospice and Hospice at Home service, Counselling and Family support and a unique Children and Young People’s Services which support bereaved children, young carers, and Transitional Care for 16-24 year olds with a life limiting illness. All the services at The Shakespeare Hospice are provided to patients free of charge. Tracy Holdback, Retail Manager at The Shakespeare Hospice, said: “We already have seven Shakespeare Hospice shops in the areas covered by our clinical staff, and as our Hospice at Home nurses support families in the Moreton area, it was a natural decision to open a store here. Our other furniture stores have proved extremely popular, and we are hoping that local folk will support us by donating unwanted furniture and visiting the new store to see what’s on offer.” The new store is now accepting donations of high-end, pre-loved furniture, in readiness for opening their doors in March. The Hospice will collect large items from within a radius of 10 miles, and anyone with something to donate, small or large, is asked to call the shop on 01608 654415 or email: [email protected]. However, if you would like to donate prior to the opening, please contact Tracy Holdback at The Hospice on 01789 266852.The Hospice is also looking for volunteers to help at the store, so if anyone would like to learn new skills or get some valuable work experience, they are asked to please call Carole Lomas on 01789 266852 or email recruitment@the shakespearehospice.org.uk

Martyn Slater, Chairman of SVTEC said “Last year nearly 20,000 visitors flocked through the gates of the Gloucestershire Vintage and Country Extravaganza making it one of the best attended shows in the events 43year history. This meant that not only are we in a great position to invest in the sustainability of our future shows, but also to support many worthwhile causes and charities”.The show which takes place at South Cerney Airfield is the biggest event of its kind run entirely by volunteers – without them, the show simply couldn’t run. Our teams raise as much money as they can – and as a way to reward them for all their hard work and commitment to the event, each section leader nominates a charity to be a beneficiary from the profits raised. The show organisers hosted a special evening at Stonehouse Court Hotel in January and invited representatives from 35 charities to attend a presentation. Most of the charities supported by SVTEC receive no government funding. Martyn Slater continued “Nothing could prepare me for the immense sense of pride and humility I felt at our charity presentation evening when 33 of the 35 chosen charities attended to accept their cheques. Each recipient was given the opportunity to say a few words about their respective causes. It is our hope that we are in a position to do something similar for many years to come.”The largest donations went to LINC (The Leukaemia and Intensive Chemotherapy Fund) in memory of event volunteer John White, Diabetes UK, Event Mobility, Cotswold Canals Trust, Vale of Berkeley Railway, 29th Regiment Welfare and Cobalt Health.

The event organisers are staunch supporters of Cobalt Health - the charity has been actively fundraising at the show for 16 years, and a team of Cobalt volunteers staffed the ticket gates and raised an additional £5,000. A spokesperson for the charity said “the event is a great platform to promote the work of Cobalt. The money donated tonight plus and what was raised on site over the weekend will help us enormously to provide the best possible access to diagnoses equipment for cancer and dementia patients in the county”. Jim White, Chair of the Trustees of Cotswold Canal Trust felt humbled to receive such a fabulous donation, especially after hearing about all the other worthwhile causes. He said “We are grateful again for this donation. The money received will go towards a specially adapted trip boat with disabled access, which we hope to launch on the Stroudwater Navigation next yeaMeanwhile Howard Parker from The Vale of Berkeley Railway will be putting the donation towards the cost to purchase, transport and install an historic original signal boxat Sharpness. The Graham Fulford Charitable Trust promotes awareness of Prostate Cancer and was nominated when a Rally volunteer had a PSA test which showed a high reading - ultimately the test might have saved his life. The Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue Service collected a cheque on behalf of The Fire Fighters Charity, which supports injured and sick firefighters, and provides psychological support to the UK fire community. The Grenfell Tower tragedy highlighted the life-and-death risks that firefighters take in their line of work, and the often-long-lasting psychological effects.

STEAMING GLOUCESTERSHIRE VINTAGE & COUNTRY EXTRAVAGANZA

In August one of the largest annual Steam Fairs in the country will be held on South Cerney airfield, outside Cirencester.

The event is organised by Stroud Vintage Transport and Engine Club (SVTEC).In 2017 SVTEC raised over £25,000 which was donated to 35 national and regional charities.

FOCUS ON LOCAL PRODUCE The Coop in Bourton-on-the-Water listed as a top

European supermarket doorsFrom a report by Miles Hadford.

Just months after it opened, Midcounties Co-op store has been named the best in England, and one of Europe’s finest supermarkets, by industry experts IGD (Institute Grocery Distribution. Bourton-on-the-Water’s Coop store, the result of a £4.9m investment by the society, and is the only supermarket in England to make it into the grocery researcher’s report ‘Top 14 Stores to See in Europe’.

“focus on local produce” The eco-friendly store on Station Road was selected for its focus on sourcing local produce which the report highlighted as one way to create “a compelling point of difference for smaller retailers needing to stand out from larger competitors”.The store’s Best of Our Counties range showcases more than 800 products from suppliers in Gloucestershire and neighbouring counties. It features rare-breed meat from Todenham Manor Farm in Moreton-in-Marsh, honey-based spirits from The British Honey Company and a variety of beers and ales from local breweries. The report praised in-store cooking demonstrations that celebrate seasonal dishes and local ingredients and described the unique products available on the delicatessen counter as a “major draw for customers”.Experts also highlighted the TV showing local supplier stories as a stand-out feature and said that the store’s premium feel, created by the high-quality fit out, made for an “inspiring environment for shoppers”.Phil Ponsonby, chief executive (trading) at Midcounties, said:.“The Best of Our Counties range is all about celebrating the food and drink available in our communities and supporting the talented local suppliers behind the products. It’s great to hear that organisations like IGD appreciate this initiative and value local produce as much as we do.”

Cheques were issued to the following charities:Health Charities: Cobalt Health, British Heart Foundation, Diabetes UK, EPIC – Supporting Children with Epilepsy, Event Mobility Charitable Trust, Sunflowers Suicide Support, Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Graham Fulford Fund/Prostate Cancer, James Hopkins Trust, Gloucestershire Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre, LINC Cheltenham - The Leukaemia and Intensive Chemotherapy Fund, Sharp Life Learning for disabled, Tree of Hope ‘Molly’s Fix Me Fund’, The Big Appeal, Dance for Life, Designability and Five Valley Sounds, Stroud’s Talking Newspaper for the Blind and visually impaired. Service Charities: 29th Regiment Welfare Unit, The Fire Fighters Charity, RAF Air Cadets, Army Benevolent Fund, Severn Area Rescue Association, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire 4x4 Response and Great Western Air Ambulance Charity.Preservation/Heritage Groups: Cotswold Canals Trust, Woodchester Mansion, Vale of Berkeley Railway, Friends of Purton, Wartime in the Cotswolds and Bristol Bus Group.Community Projects: Dursley Heritage Centre, Kingshill House Arts Centre, South Cerney Parish Council, The Tallinding Project, GambiaAside from the beneficiaries above, numerous other animal and welfare charities were also represented on site during the event weekend raising funds and awareness of their respective causes. Stand space has been provided to Gloucestershire-based charities to get involved. The event tries to be as ethically responsible as possible, and realises that this is not completely possible with the carbon footprint of the larger Steam and HGV engines. The Chairman is actively seeking a local ‘Green’ Cirencester-based charity or community project to team up with for a green initiative. He would welcome any suitable ones to step forward. The Gloucestershire Vintage & Country Extravaganza is an annual event which returns to South Cerney Airfield, near Cirencester on the weekend of Friday 3rd August - Sunday 5th August 2018 and is the largest show of its kind still run entirely by volunteers. Each year the show features the popular Steam Arena, with non-stop steam demonstrations and literally thousands of vintage vehicles from classic cars, tractors, commercial vehicles, vintage bus and coaches, motorcycles, scooters, traction engines, miniature steam, industrial trucks, military vehicles, caravans to emergency vehicles. Plus a Countryside Arena featuring dog shows, ferret racing, rare breeds, animal conservation, alpacas, shire horses, horse logging, falconry displays to children’s pony rides. The show’s goal has always been to give the best value for money family day out in Gloucestershire, with something for all of the family to enjoy. It has evolved a lot over the past 40 years, but the mission remains the same - to inform, educate, entertain and celebrate our unique transport history and the preservation of historical vehicles, and plans for the 2018 event are well underway.

It's time to start planning your royal wedding celebrations!

Holding a street party is a great way to get together with yourneighbours to celebrate this special day on 19 May.Our online guidance helps bust popular myths and provides auseful checklist and practical advice for what is needed toanyone planning their own street party.Did you know for example that you don’t need a music licenceif you want to play music at your street party? Or that you don’tneed to buy expensive road signs – you can lend or hire them. The number one tip from our guidance is to plan early bygetting in touch with your council at least 4-6 weeks in advance.Further informationMore helpful tips, advice and support for organising asuccessful event can be found on the Street Party website(www.streetparty.org.uk/) and The Big Lunch website. If you are not be able to arrange a road closure for street party, you can still have an informal ‘street meet’ on a driveway, parking area, front garden or end of a cul-de-sac that does notrequire permission from the council as it is on private land. Seefurther information on street meets.

As an artist, I seek an answer. Russell once said “a painter is likely to become happy if he wins recognition”. My question is: how does an amateur artist ever achieve recognition?

Cotswolds is retirement heaven – The area is full of people, often successful in their working lives, who share quite a few interests, for example, painting. Not all of us seek the extra happiness which goes with recognition. The perception of recognition is enhanced when someone actually wants to have one of your paintings.

Few amateur artists sell much of their work. Sadly there is more to reaching for a brush or pencil to getting known. Three of us set up a pop-up gallery in Stow. We reached £10,000 sales after year 1. We learned a great deal about our art; for example, what was popular and if we replaced the work with a copy then wasn’t that a sort of artistic treadmill? not quite why we paint in the first place. I discovered that if I painted in the shop, people would tell me that seeing the artist at work was a good experience. I learned what visitors like.

So before you reach for a brush and paint box, I suggest you ask yourself – can I draw/paint? If the answer is NO then buy Betty Edwards’ book “Drawing...” because it shows you how to see. Recently, top artists have said schools are teaching art by emphasising expression over learning to draw. In the past you were taught to draw before everything.

Having worked your way through Betty Edwards’ book, you will turn to paint; choosing subjects, materials etc will result in hours of pleasure. Before you launch yourself up to the art shop, let me suggest you do a little research; here is a list of things to consider before putting a brush in your hand;

• How do you chose and mix colour?• How do you choose dark, shadow, tone• How balanced is the composition• Where is the light source?• What sort of brushes and how do you

use them

If you just want to play, it does not matter what order you do things or what you chose to use. If on the other hand you want to go somewhere, then a map might be very helpful. We are lucky to have several successful artists who offer to pass on their skill in classes and workshops. If you want to draw, Lindy Allfrey teaches just that. If you want to address the list above, Jill Jarvis runs several classes.

If you want to learn water colour then Jean Haines or Ann Blockley do regular workshops. There are several life classes. If you want to join a ‘group’ such as NCAA, ask.

I have pottered for years but when I look at ‘degrees of satisfaction’ achieved, I could see two turning points; the online class EDX.com/natural history illustration and Charles |Bargue atelier courses both are free.

What these courses teach is that if you want to create an illusion, you must learn to draw. Local tutors do charge but modestly and advice is virtually 1:1 in many cases.

Assuming you have done all this and you have a pile of paintings to show for your efforts – where next (e.g. for recognition)?;

There are numerous competitions, TV shows even. Or you can start

your own website or create an entry on ebay or etsy.com or

you can join a local artists group and if you are able to produce acceptable work, then get it framed, be prepared to be a steward for the exhibition and sales should follow.

Whether this will lead to recognition, I do not know

but it is a start. Stow has changed and whilst

it is good to see change – the death of the high street (Mary Portas) is a worrying move away from primary retail to Amazon with delivery to your door. What has emerged to replace some shops is galleries – we had 15 though at one point. I do not know how many other amateurs have asked if they show local artists; the answer is only yes if they are well known. With other venues it depends on who you know. I had a dozen pictures in a local pub but sales were few. Anyhow, my pub decided to do a decor upgrade and I was out on my ear! Recently four of us have been offered space in the “Golden Rooster” cafe in Tara’s Emporium. Mary Portas thinks that the future lies in the “shopping experience” so I see nothing wrong with sitting down in Tara’s and sharing our painting experience with punters. You never know they might want an example. Toulouse Lautrec did it so why not?!

You can get a longer version from me at [email protected] d g dean

What drives us to do things?

Great ideas to share - Spend time with Rotary and good things happen

Chipping Campden and District Rotary Club

The Club was glad to welcome George Fenwick, one of our new members and an expert on antiques, as the speaker on Thursday, 22 February. George has been fascinated by antiques since childhood and this has provided him with his life’s work.

Race Night 2018: Future plans include a further simulated Race Evening at Chipping Campden School Hall on Saturday, 10 March 2018 in aid of Campden Area Home Nursing. We have new exciting horse races to follow on screen – so come along and take a chance and support a very worthwhile cause! Tickets are £10 or £90 for a table of ten. This follows the very successful event in 2016.

Junior School Youth Speaks Competition: For the last twenty-seven years, the club has held a Youth Speaks competition which is eagerly awaited by our local junior schools. Each year the children are given a subject on which to speak for about five minutes. This year the annual Competition with students from six local schools will take place on Tuesday, 20 March. The competition and the training leading up to it provides an important educational experience for these young people and fits in with one of the primary aims of Rotary – encouraging the education of young people.

Intermediate Youth Speaks: President Les Southam visited the recent District Final (of five teams) on 3

February, which was won by Redlands talking on “Could there be a solution to the housing problem”. All the teams were very good. It was thought that a likely outcome would be that winners might go on to mentor next year’s entrants.

Young Writer competition: The Club also intends to sponsor a Year nine student’s work in a Young Writer competition.

Milldene Gardens: On 23 June we are co-operating with our mother club, North Cotswold Club, in organising a Gardens Open Day on behalf of Campden Area Home Nursing and Kate’s Home Nursing.

The Club has welcomed seven new members to Rotary this past year and also one Rotarian from another club, who has moved into the district. This provides extra resources for service to the local community.

New members and enquirers are always welcome at the Club’s meetings at the Cotswold House Hotel normally on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at 6.45 for 7 pm. Please note revised meeting time. Membership is open to women and men.

Colette told members and guests how Jennie "gave me a life", by enabling her to enjoy a degree of independence and thereby grow in confidence and self-esteem. She has had Jennie for eight and a half years, and it was clear for all to see what a strong bond there was between the two.

With Jennie by her side Colette is able to go shopping in her motorised wheelchair, with Jennie fetching items from the shelves and putting them in a basket. Jennie also helps with opening and closing doors, and she even operates the washing machine! She can open the fridge, and opens drawers or fetches the telephone when asked to do so by Colette. And of course, she is a wonderful companion.

The life cost of an Assistant Dog from puppy to retirement is about £20,000.00. Currently there are around 300 Assistance Dogs in Britain, but the demand is much greater than this. After the talk, club president Peter Boxall handed Colette an initial cheque for Canine Partners for £200.00,and the charity will also benefit as one of the principal charities from our Annual Golf Day in June.

St. James Church, Chipping Campden

North Cotswold BranchReprodiced from the Monthly Newsletter

February 2018We meet on the first Wednesday of each month, at the Lygon Arms Hotel, Chipping Campden, at 6–00 pm, in the months of May to August, and at 11–00 am in the months of September to April, with no meeting in January.

Chairman’s ReportThe Lunch at the Three Ways Hotel in Mickleton was a huge success and we may have a similar event in mid Summer. The RAF100 working party has met, and we have really started to fine tune the events in April to commemorate the formation of the RAF. Ian Campbell, Branch Support Officer, is joining us at the February Meeting and this will be an opportunity to discuss the Area’s involvement in our activities, and what financial support we can expect?

I must thank all those who are giving their time and energy to see our events succeed, we will certainly need a good turnout to set up the Exhibition at Stow and also, assist in the arrangements at St James Church in Chipping Campden. Keith Moule has reminded me that a special £2 coin is being released to mark the Centenary of the formation of the RAF so keep your eyes pealed for it’s appearance, later in the year there will be a further £2 coin to mark the Armistice on 11 November 1918, we are living in a really important year.

I went over to Croome on Saturday to see what was being done as part of the Commemorative Celebrations. The Nation Trust have decided to honour women over thirty being given the right to vote, and the ex RAF buildongs will feature photographs showing the history of the WRAF in general, and those WAAFs at Croome in particular. I will keep the branch informed of developments. A service is also planned to be held in Worcester Cathedral. Keep up to date on all things to do with RAF100 on the website: raf.mod.uk/raf100/stay-in-touch John S Sermon

Wings Week Organiser’s ReportWings & Wheels at Wellesbourne Airfield, this years event on 18 June has been cancelled again. Wing Commder Mike Pellet has expressed concern about the future of the event, because of litigation that is continuing, relating to some tenants of the airfield and their future there.

As some of you may or may not be aware, the Littler family own the V Bomber, through default by the previous owners?

The event two years ago afforded a sucessful platform for objections to the sale of the site for housing, and a petition was launched.

The Littler family, obviously want to avoind a repitition of the publicty at a Wings & Wheels event again.

Mr Ted Stratford RIPTed Stratford has recently died at the age of ninety-five. Ted was part of the Royal British Legion Team at Stratford on Avon, led by former RAF & ROC stalwart Tom Candurton. A very active founder member of the RAFA Chipping Campden Branch.

Ted volunteered for the Royal Marines in WWII and took part in the D-day Invasion. Ted raised considerable sums of money for both the Poppy Appeal and also for Wings Appeal

RAFA 100

On Easter Sunday this year the Royal Air Force will be 100 years old. The 1 April 1918 saw the amalgamation of the Royal Naval Air Service and the Royal Flying Corp into the world’s first independent air force. During the 1920s and 30s the Royal Air Force proved its worth in the maintenance of law and order on the North West Frontier of ‘British India’ and in the Middle East. In the 1930s the RAF’s independence helped it to set up a modern radar–based system for the air defences of the UK, and this – controlling the squadrons of Spitfires and Hurricanes – enabled victory in the Battle of Britain.

To celebrate the RAF’s 100 birthday the North Cotswold Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association is organising two events to which all are warmly welcome. The first is an exhibition of RAF memorabilia in Stow on the Wold’s Town Hall on Saturday and Sunday 7 and 8 April. Secondly on Friday 27 April, in St. James Church, Chipping Campden there will be a Band and Choir Concert starting at 7–30pm.

The Royal Air Forces Association is a charity, which includes the old Commonwealth Air Forces (Canada, Australia, New Zealand and India etc.) It provides for Service and ex–Service families and people when they are in need. John S Sermon

ONE-TO-ONE LITERACY SUPPORTChildren’s charity announces new impact data demonstrating the effectiveness of

one-to-one literacy supportLocal children’s literacy charity Beanstalk has launched its latest Impact Report demonstrating the impact of providing one-to-one literacy support to children struggling with their reading. The charity supports children who have fallen behind with their reading by recruiting, training and placing volunteers to work one-to-one with pupils in primary schools across England. Last year it helped around 1,800 children in the North West of England through the support of approximately 530 volunteers.Schools provide Beanstalk with information on the children’s reading attainment before and after they have been supported by their reading helpers, while reading helpers also monitor the children’s progress through Beanstalk’s Reading Records.

Beanstalk’s Impact Report showed the following results:> 82% of Key Stage 1 children who were classed as reading ‘Below’ age-related expectations when they began working with a Beanstalk reading helper moved up to ‘Working Towards’ (47%) or ‘At’ or Above’ (35%)> 57% of KS1 children who were classed as ‘Working Towards’ age-related expectations when they began working with a Beanstalk reading helper moved up to ‘At’ or ‘Above.’ > The number of KS1 children able to predict what might happen next in a story without additional support more than doubled from 27% at the beginning of the Beanstalk intervention to 61% at the end.> The number of KS1 children able to use their sounds to work out new words on their own increased from 28% to 67% during their time with their reading helper.> The number of KS1 children who could talk on their own about a range of books they have listened to and read including stories, poems and factual books increased from 8% to 34% - a 425% increase!> The percentage of children who were confident when choosing books and games during the session more than doubled - from 26% to 56%.> Children’s confidence and enjoyment also improved; the number of children requiring support in order to maintain a positive attitude throughout the reading session almost halved.> The impact on KS2 children was less pronounced but significant progress was made - especially in their breadth of reading and engagement in a wider range of genres

About Beanstalk• Beanstalk is a national charity that provides one-to-one literacy support to children who struggle with their reading.• The charity recruits, trains and supports volunteers to provide one-to-one literacy support in primary schools.• Beanstalk’s trained reading helpers transform the lives of the children they support, turning them into confident, passionate and able readers.• In the last school year the charity helped 11,000 children across England with the help of approximately 3,000 reading helpers, ensuring children have the skills and confidence to reach their true potential.• By 2020-21 Beanstalk aims to help 30,000 children every year, with 8,000 volunteers

Become a Story StarterBy becoming a Story Starter volunteer you will give a child in a local early years setting/nursery the skills to start primary school ready to read. You’ll open up their lives to the magic of stories and provide crucial language development in a way which is fun for both you and the child!

How does it work? • As a Story Starter you will support three children aged 3-5 years’ old on a one-to-one basis, using play and stories to develop and enrich their use of language.• You’ll need to commit to volunteering at a local nursery for one hour, twice a week during nursery hours.• You’ll receive professional training and support to ensure that you are best able to support young children and feel comfortable in a modern nursery setting.

Burns night… well almost (it was actually a burns week)! The residents of Mill House Care Home in Chipping Campden love an excuse for a party, so while only 3 of the residents have Scottish connections, they jumped at the chance to celebrate Burns Night.Paul Dixon one of the Mill House activity coordinators commented, although we acknowledge and appreciate the importance of Burns Night, we actually used the day to stimulate memories, many of our residents have dementia, and using an important date such as Burns Day is a great time to stimulate conversation. We began earlier in the week by making Tartan and Scottish theamed decorations, we had a coffee morning with Scottish shortbread etc, and

even had a virtual tour of Edenborough castle with the help of Youtube, keeping a theme for several days helped bring back memories, be they of holidays in Scotland, music by Scottish artists or discussing family members who live in Scotland. We finished off a week of activities with a Burns Lunch, including a bagpiper, haggis, smoked salmon and of course a tot of Whisky! The Manager of Mill House, Kim commented, spreading the event over several days and building up to the bagpiper has been a tremendous success, encouraging and engaging our elderly and dementia residents is at the very heart of what we aim to do, Kim went on to say Paul and his college Mary have said that St Georges day, coming up in April will also

be a huge celebration that will involve a dragon! I am not sure what they are planning, but I hope it’s a friendly dragon. For more information contact Paul Dixon at [email protected]

Home and AwayCoach and vicar team up for rugby church

A coach who has had enough of missing church on Sundays has teamed up with his local vicar to start a new church congregation in the rugby club bar.

Richard Witham, whose day job is the National Sports Mission Leader for the Scripture Union, coaches the under 10s at Stow on the Wold Rugby Football Club. He said: “I must admit, it is slight selfishness that has led to us setting this up! I love rugby and I love Jesus and this way I can do both of the things that I love on a Sunday.

45 minutes in the Stow Rugby Club bar, Wrighty’s.“When you live in a rural location it can be hard to have access to the full range of services that churches offer these days. I hope this new venture is a way of including more people in something Christian on a Sunday.” Richard hopes that the girls and boys of Stow’s Minis and Juniors, with their parents, will try this informal forty-five minute service in the rugby club bar, Wrighty’s.

The service also welcomes anyone who lives in Stow or neighbouring parishes, and anyone who might feel more at home in a rugby club bar than in a church.

The Revd Martin Short, Rector of Stow-on-the-Wold said: “This is a great idea. People have busy lives and it is good for Stow Church to be able to play ‘at home’ and ‘away’.”

There will be monthly gatherings on 18 March and 29 April at 9 am. in the same location. All are welcome (rugby

kits welcome too). Coffee and pastries will be served.

Blockley Sports and Social Club

HockeyHockey Section Day OutTwo members of the junior coaching staff attended the National Indoor Hockey Finals at the Copperbox, Olympic Park to watch Blockley’s favourite GB and premier league player, Ed Horler go for the National title – Ed visited Blockley HC in September to open our junior hockey section. As top scorer during the qualifying rounds hopes were high, but indoor hockey is a very different game to outdoor and the plays did not go Ed’s way. However with plenty of International and Olympic hockey stars on show it was a fantastic day out and whetted the appetite for the forthcoming women’s Hockey World Cup taking place in London in July/August 2018, where GB’s Rio Olympic Gold Medallists will be hoping to take home the silverware. To top the day off perfectly, N. Ingles was lucky enough to win tickets to the World Cup

Women’s First XI.Blockley 3-0 Cirencester. Hosting top of the league at home was always going to be a tough game but Blockley with its strongest team out that season were organised and ruthless with J. Gordon scoring two from short corners and F. Haydon one from close range. A great result to put Blockley third in the league, the highest position achieved to date. Player of the Match was J. Gordon.

North Wilts 1 2-5 Blockley. After a late start in a wet Swindon, Blockley went to work and even with a team full of flu F. Haydon continued to add to her season tally and slotted four away with J. Gordon striking a further one to take home the three points.

Blockley 1-2 Newent 2. Having lost to Newent 5-0 earlier in the season Blockley were keen to turn the tables and fought hard with a depleted team and L. Arnold scored a skilful short corner but Newent capitalised on opportunities in the first half and resisted intense pressure in the second which left Blockley frustrated with a 2-1 loss. Player of the Match was H. Whitehouse. Blockley remain third in the table on goal difference.

Women’s Second XIBret Two 3-2 Blockley. Two goals from A. Ottoway and K. Jackson. Player of the match was I. Turner.

Blockey Two 3-1 Newent Three. Goal from J. Bandeira and Player of the Match was goalkeeper S. Harvey.

Lansdown Four 0-15 Blockley Two. Goals galore at Lansdown with goals from J. Peachey four, J. Bandeira three, K.J ackson two, D. Peach three, F. Musgrave one and A. Ottoway two Player of the match was J. Bandeira.

The Twos face Bourton & Sherborne Twos next as they continue their quest for promotion.

FootballBlockley 1-3 Bretforton. Due to a waterlogged pitch the game was played at Bret’s venue and Blockley started well against the second in the league with a couple of chances straight away but thirty minutes in Bret managed to score from a corner. Bret scored again but an in-form J. Keen replied with his fifth goal in five games. Blockley kept pushing for the equaliser but with ten minutes to go Bret scored a thirrd and put the game to bed.

Football Training.Men’s training takes place at Blockley Sports & Social Club every Tuesday 6.30-7.30 pm, ages 16+ welcome.

MUGA. Blockley has a Multi Use Games Area available to hire for £20 an hour. Perfect for parties and social kick-about. Please contact Jason Hardwick on 07980 851397.

U10s Ruck On The U10s finished the previous season playing some great rugby with everyone enjoying themselves on the pitch. So, the coaches were keen to make sure that the fun continued whilst the players got to grips with the new skills for their age group of rucking and mauling. Learning is easy when its fun and the squad have taken to bossing the breakdown like ducks to water. Even their opposition have praised them for their speed and strength at the ruck area. They have played some good teams and certainly been tested but have a win ratio of approximately 90%. The team are looking forward to the upcoming festivals at Chippenham and those organ-ised by the Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire County Unions as the season builds to its climax. They also have the visit of the touring Birkdale School and a match under floodlights to look forward to.

Girls Rugby On Sundays Rugby for girls has moved from Tuesday evenings to Sundays from 10am to 12pm. Its hoped that the move will encourage more girls between the ages of 11 and 16 to attend. Subscriptions for girls is free but players will need a pair of boots and a gumshield. All are welcome, without commitment, whether they have played rugby before or not. Contact Sean Clarke through the website for info.

Gloucester and Samoa star Terry Fanolua hosted a well supported rugby camp at Stow in the February half term. 51 players aged between 8 and 13 signed up for the 2 day camp and benefited from Terry’s vast experience. Fanolua played at centre for Gloucester for 10 years and for Samoa in 2 World Cups and one Sevens World Cup. The first day of the camp concentrated on developing ball handling skills and good body position whilst the second day looked at managing the contact area. The players all worked hard over the two days, sometimes with the rain on their backs and were rewarded at the end of it. Former Stow player and current Gloucester wing Ollie Thorley (below in the middle at the back) attended on day two to answer questions and sign autographs. Ollie is a club hero and a great example of what you can achieve through natural talent, hard work and dedication.

Its fair to say the First XV have had a tough season so far, suffering from both injuries and availability. They are sitting 3rd from bottom in the Southern Counties North league but have the advantage of 11 points over Gosford All Blacks, the team below them and 22 points over Drifters who are last. The team have been bolstered on occasion by players from the Seconds and they stepped up seam-lessly showing that there is not so much between our two senior teams. 5 matches have been won out of 15 but crucially, points have been taken from those teams just above and below Stow. The team have put in some good performances over the season includ-ing a recent loss to table toppers Beaconsfield and were unlucky not to take a losing bonus point. With 7 matches remaining the team need to gain some consistency in their performance to see the season out with some wins and secure their place in the league.

South West Schools Cross Country Championships Stover School – Saturday, 3 February 2018Bourton Roadrunner Juniors had three members chosen to represent Gloucestershire Schools in the South West Schools Cross Country Championships in Devon on Saturday, 3 February. The event took place at Stover School, near Newton Abbot on the edge of Dartmoor. The course comprised of a flatter section that was quite difficult, as it was very muddy and quite narrow in parts, an undulating wooded section and the older runners also had to contend with an additional field, with a relatively tough hill.

In the Junior Girls race Kiya Dee (right) and a Dorset runner opened a gap on the rest of the field and although Kiya ran

extremely well, the Dorset runner just came out on top at the very end. Sister Taya had a strong run for forty-first helping Gloucestershire to a well deserved second place overall.

Emily Field ran in the Inter Girls race and had one of her best races to date with a very good twenty-fourth place helping the Gloucestershire team to another excellent second place.

All three girls have a great chance in being chosen to represent Gloucestershire Schools in the Schools Nationals in March.

Help Put the Lights OnMoreton Rangers Football Club has had its up and downs in its twenty-year history, the downs coming through events off the field whilst the football on the field has gone from strength to strength.

With the club expanding from one Junior Team in 1997 to its current line-up of seven Junior and two adult teams making it the largest membership club in the town with over 130 players. The off-field challenges have tested the resolve of those involved, when the changing rooms were burned down an unbelievable effort was made to raise £86,000 to build new changing rooms, with local support from charities and business being key to supporting the fundraising and work by club members.

Having inherited a dilapidated clubroom from the defunct Moreton Town this was then vandalised rendering it dangerous and was demolished to make way for the skate park. The club has now raised another £30,000 to build a new clubroom which is now open. Again this was achieved through local partnership with businesses and charities along with hard work fundraising and working for free to build the room.

Our next big project is to refurbish the

Floodlights at the ground to help expand the ambitions of the club. When the fire destroyed the changing rooms it wrecked the electric supply to the lights. Although a new supply was installed to the changing rooms the age of the original lights made them unusable.

We now aim to install up to date floodlights which meet the FA standards for grounds and give us the flexibility to train and play games in the evenings, and in particular enter teams in the Midlands Under eighteen floodlit league to provide a pathway for our junior players once they reach sixteen when most only have adult leagues to play in locally.

This project we anticipate will cost £30,000 so we are starting a fundraising appeal to raise this amount. If you feel you can help please contact Martin Jones on 01608 650955 or [email protected].

Moreton Teams are League Title ChallengersMoreton first team (pictured above)are in a tight run in with Newent and Carterton at the top of the Hellenic League Divison Two West. A 2-1 away win at league leaders Newent put them within a point off the top spot but local rivals Bourton Rovers kept Moreton from taking control of the league as they played twice in two weeks, with both hard fought games ending in 1-1 draws.

Upcoming games at London Road are:Saturday, 10 March v Highworth – KO

3 pm Saturday, 17 March v Newent – KO

3 pm

Saturday, 2 April v Carterton – KO 2.15 pm

Moreton Rangers Reserves are second in the Witney and District League Two but are five points behind the leaders Middle Barton with a game in hand. Recent victories over Hanborough 2-1 and Aston Reserves 1-0 kept them in contention. With eight games to go it is all to play for.

Moreton Rangers under 13 also sit second in their Ambassador Evesham League. Only one point behind the leaders Nunnery Wood with a game in hand. Their coach Lynsey Burdock hopes the fine form of the squad can take them to the end of the season in contention to win the league.
