Dear parents, students and friends I am delighted to be introducing the summer 2011 edition of the newsletter which reflects the diverse range of activities open to students at CVC and celebrates the many interests, skills and talents of both students and staff at the college. This newsletter is a special one for me because it marks the end of 22 very happy years at Cottenham Village College. As I start a new phase of life, retirement, I wanted to say thank you for helping to make my working life here so enjoyable. To students, both past and present, I’d like to say a very big thanks: you have kept me on my toes, amused me with your wit, enthused me with your energy, amazed me with your creativity and stunned me with your sheer brilliance. Even at your most exasperating, there was never a student that I couldn’t find something positive in - honest!! It is always a real pleasure to meet ex-students in Cambridge and catch up with their lives. To parents and carers: excellent parental support and co-operation have been a particular feature of my time as both Year Head and Deputy Head; I can count in single figures the number of times when there has not been unconditional support. We are very lucky at CVC to have such an interested and engaged group of parents; it is very much appreciated. To have had a small part in shaping the next generation has been a real privilege. March 2011 saw the annual CVC productionwhich, this year, was the musical Our House,

featuring the songs of Madness. The play is eightyears old and the original London production wonthe Olivier award for Best New Musical of its year. The story set in Camden, London, centres around thelife of Joe Casey as he celebrates his16th birthday.

Harry Pledger performed thechallenging part of Joe with energy andaplomb, contrasting Joe’s personalitieswith great skill. He was ably supportedby Megan Parker in the role of Sarah,Joe’s girlfriend, who played it with greatsensitivity. Ali McNamara and AngusBeauchamp played Joe’s friends Emmoand Lewis, highlighting the comedicnature of the parts, while KatiePeacock and Lucy Matthews made theroles of Sarah’s friends, Billie andAngie, their own.

The whole cast acted, sang and danced withtremendous energy and conviction in a productiondirected by Simon Bowen and well received bycapacity audiences. The production team is alreadyin the planning stages for the 2012 CVC production!

University ofCambridge sciencemaster classes

Students from years 9 and 10 attended thescience master classes held during theUniversity of Cambridge science festival.

They attended lectures and had a chance to lookaround several of the colleges.

Here is Hannah’s report:

When visiting the colleges it wasn’t so much of a learningexperience of things that I had never heard of before, it wasmore inspirational. I really enjoyed being able to participate inthe lectures and found them really interesting and they seemedto trigger a part of my brain that hadn’t fully got going. Nowit’s much later and I am still buzzing from the experience andit has made my love of science even greater than it was before.

My favourite two lectures were the ones on astro-physics, asthat is a subject that I find fascinating and would love tojump into, and the immune system as that is also a subject Iwould love to learn more about. My head is whizzing tryingto now find answers to:

Why does nuclear fusion create energy?Do photons have a mass? Where do neutrons come from?

I found the day really interesting and that the university is a greatplace to study; I would really like to study there in the future.

Year 3 striking andfielding festivalYear 10 sports leaders organised and planned a festival basedon cricket. Year 3 students rotated around a number ofstations practising batting, bowling and fielding skills. Theythen finished off with some games. The year 10 studentswere helped out by a group of year 9’s who took to the rolevery well, with the year 10 students acting as their mentors.

We have been very pleased this yearbecause we managed to get twonetball teams competing at the districttournament. During the tournamentboth teams played well with the Ateam reaching the semi-finals. Theywere, unfortunately, knocked out by agoal in the last few seconds of thegame.

The year 9 football team made it all theway to the semi-finals this year - a fantasticachievement after losing their first game 6-1! After scoring the most goals in thiscompetition and getting a hat-trick in thequarters, Jason Hunter picked up the`golden boot` award! Well done to all thelads including: Dom Brady,Adam Braybrooke, NathanTaylor, Lawrence Morrison,Randall Butler, DylanSimms, Raheeb Yousaf,Luke Males, Elliot Aldhouse,Ryan Macdonald, CallumLenk, Cameron Sharpe,Connor Shelley, JackTunbridge and Liam Purser.

Nationaltrampolinist Berlin tripWe are pleased to report that Naomi Waldockis now competing nationally in trampolininggalas! She has qualified for the national finalsin Birmingham and we wish her all the bestwith her training! She says “I would love to goto the 2016 Olympics in Rio, and not just towatch!”

At the beginning of the Easter holidays,

40 students from years 10 and 11

travelled to Berlin for the annual GCSE

history trip. The group stayed in central

Berlin and toured many historical and

cultural highlights of the city, including the

Reichstag, the Berlin Wall memorial centre,

Checkpoint Charlie, Sachsenhausen, the

Olympic Stadium

and the TV Tower.

They still found

time for some

shopping,

bratwursts and the

odd slice of cake!

It was another

fantastic trip and

an ideal

opportunity for

students to see a

vibrant city that has

experienced so

many of the 20th

century’s significant

events. The group

were a pleasure to

look after. Watch

out for details of

next year’s trip

soon…

Students from Cottenham, Willingham and Waterbeachprimary schools enjoyed the design and technologychallenge days. The students took part in two groupactivities which involved designing, making and evaluationskills. They made a hovercraft using simple electronicswhich they raced in teams in the hall and also a paperrocket which was launched over the millennium garden.

Duke of Edinburgh‘sbronze awardThis year there have been 47 year 9 studentsenrolled for the Duke of Edinburgh’s bronzeaward.

In glorious sunshine the group completed atraining walk around the beautiful setting ofWimpole Hall, followed by a trainingweekend of 35-40 km of walking aroundAudley End. For this the students had to beself-sufficient, carrying their own food, sleeping bags, stoves and tents. A real highlight was the group who prepared a wonderful stirfry complete with a range of fresh vegetables. More recently the group have planned andcompleted their final expeditions to the Peak District.

The scheme this year was run by Mr Fordham and Dr Millington. The commitment and respectshown by the year 9's have been exceptional and in many aspects far better than students whocomplete the award at an older age. Attendance at the numerous after-school training sessionshas been excellent and the majority of students have been able to find activities to support theother areas of the award.

Thank you to all the volunteers who had given up their weekends to assist with the scheme. Wewould be delighted to hear from parents who may be able to help with the award in the nextacademic year. In particular we would benefit from additional volunteers to assist with theexpedition weekends or financial support from local companies to purchase specific items of kit.

MOCK TRIALThe mock trial team from year 8 and 9 took part in the regional finalof the mock trial competition in May. Team members gave excellentperformances as lawyers, witnesses, court officials and magistratesand, although we were disappointed not to go through to thenational final, the event was thoroughly enjoyable.

WexabilityWexabilityIn May, year 10 students were

involved in a conference day

focusing on preparation for

work experience.

The students came to school in business dress

and followed a programme designed to help

prepare them for the world of work. This

included setting personal goals, health and

Students voted within their form groups to find
