Counseling lesson / topic, if applicable (bullies, career etc...):

The counseling topic of this guidance lesson relates to bullying.

Synopsis of how guidance and academic lesson are related and integrated:

Since the 6th grade students are already reading the book “Skinnybones,” the counselor is only replacing one lesson of the educators which also relates to their content area. The school counselor will use the book to provide students with a learning experience about bullying.

Similar student experiences to connect to the content / topic (relevance):

Bullying has been a huge issue with this school system. Since 6th graders are new to the school, it is important that we address the issue of bullying before they reach 8th grade and on.

Procedure (include teacher and counselor role in the lesson):

1. Teacher will present topic of today’s lesson – To understand how Alex (the main character of “Skinnybones” ) used all of his power in order to deflect the hurtful words he was told by a bully.

2. Counselor will then introduce the directions via the PowerPoint.a. Explanation of bullying (brief)b. Today we are going to create shields – explanation on PowerPointc. This is why we are going to do this – relate back to Alexd. Pass out Shieldse. Instruct students that they can draw whatever they want on their

shieldsi. Explain it must be school appropriateii. Explain that it must be an effective way of dealing with a

bullyiii. Explain that they can draw the supportive people in their

lives – including a trusted adult they can go to if they are bullied.

3. After student’s are done completing their shield, have teacher again relate this activity back to the book
