I want to thank everyone who came out to our first-ever Movie in the Park. It was a great success and we certainly heard that people would like it to become an annual tradition, so we will work on that.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone well on their return to school. I also want to remind everyone that children will be back on the streets walking to school and waiting for school buses. Please be careful out there.

I want to remind people that the Merivale Gardens Corn Roast is happening on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. I look forward to seeing you there. Also don’t forget the Manordale Corn Roast on September 10th and the Glens Family Picnic is also on the 10th.

Wednesday I attended Council and the details of the meeting can be found at the following link.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Cynthia Louden who has worked in my office for the last 4 years as a summer student and part-time throughout the school year. Back-to-School Safety Reminders for Children and Adults

This week and next, children will be returning to school and many will be busing, walking and riding their bikes to their destinations. The Ottawa Police Service reminds motorists and pedestrians to be aware of the increase of children and youth on city streets. As school begins, please consider the following safety tips:

Reduce speeds in school zones and be ready to stop at any time. Children do not always notice oncoming traffic;

Obey school bus signals;

Watch for newly installed pedestrian crossovers, know how they work and obey them when in use;

Walk on available sidewalks;

Always cross at intersections, looking and listening for traffic and walk across only when road is clear and safe to do so;

Follow adult crossing guards, student crossing patrols and school bus operator’s signals; and,

Always wear a helmet when riding a bike and walk your bike across a roadway.

September is School Bus/School Zone safety and Vehicle Occupant Restraint awareness month with the Safer Roads Ottawa Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP).

For more safety tips, go to Back to School Safety.

Public Engagement Tools for Budget 2017

The Corporate Services Department has developed new and innovative tools now available on Ottawa.ca in order to enhance the public’s understanding of the budget

process and how decisions impact their individual property taxes. These enhancements also include a cleaner navigation through the Budget pages on Ottawa.ca, brief

explanatory notes on each tool available, and simplified more descriptive language used to characterize each resource.

The new resources are available in the Understanding Your City Budget section of Ottawa.ca and include:

How your City Budget Works. A four-minute doodle video that uses plain language and easy-to-understand cartoon-style graphics to describe the development of

the City budget.

Get Involved in the Budget Process: The City of Ottawa’s Budget Process Made Simple. A printable info-graphic that describes the budget and consultation pro-

cess and highlights when and how citizens can have their say; and

Budget Planning Tool: Citizen Budget Consultation. This interactive software tool provides residents with the opportunity to play the role of a politician or adminis-

trator by determining how they would prioritize budget funding for each category. To show the impact of their decision, it will also show how it would affect the

budget rate and their individual property taxes.

The online tool allows the user to determine what areas of City services and programs require increases, decreases or status quo funding. The Citizen Budget

Consultation tool then calculates the selections and determines the budget rate that would be required to support those choices. On a personal impact level, the

user inserts his or her recent property assessment to get how that budget rate impacts their annual property tax payments. If the user does not insert his or her

recent property assessment, an average of the City’s property assessment is used as the default.

The budget simulator tool will remain live until the budget is tabled on November 9. After which time, the data will be collected and a report will be made available

to Council with the consolidated results.

The webpage and tools will provide residents with a better understanding about the budget process and the difficulty in balancing available revenues with service and

program delivery budgets.

We encourage Council members to advertise these tools and resources throughout their Wards and during their consultation sessions. We believe they will stimulate a

platform for informative questions, discussions and feedback.
