Headline/title of entry: Counselor comes forward in 40 year-old case

    Matt Durr

    College name: Washtenaw CC

I really wanted to score this story higher, since this is probably thebiggest story that will happen on campus this year. Excellent job recognizing itsimportance and playing it large on the front page. It placed third, though, because thereare holes that leave readers unfamiliar with the story without crucial information neededto understand what happened. The lede is excellent, but the story needed a paragraphor two later in the story that summarized the circumstances; it never appeared. Inaddition, the last two paragraphs about the murder charges should have been much, much higher in the story. Other things to consider: Did the writer ask Jordans attorney if

Jordan would be willing to speak? Did the reporter attend the hearing in California, orpull his comments in court from other media sources? If so, they need to be cited. Avoidanonymous sources, like the unnamed employee. His/her comments take away fromthe story because he/she isnt willing to back them up. Anonymous sources should beused extremely rarely, and only in situations where the information they provide ispertinent and unable to be obtained anywhere else. A reaction to an employee chargedwith a crime is not the appropriate situation.
