BOOK EARLY TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT MERRY CHRISTMAS Gift idea: Men are notoriously difficult to buy for — here's one unusual idea from English Heritage: a set of shining armour. Advertising feature Giving and receiving gifts is one of the oldest customs ONE of the oldest customs associated with Christmas is giving and receiving presents — it is actually older than the holiday itself. The Romans, for example, cel- ebrated the Saturnalia, a win- ter feast of merrymaking and gift exchanging, on December 17. Two weeks later, on the Roman New Year, houses were decorated with greenery and lights, and gifts were given to children and the poor. As the Germanic tribes of Europe accepted Christianity and began to celebrate Christmas, they also gave gifts. In some countries, such as Italy and Spain, children tradi- tionally do not receive gifts on December 25 but on January 5, the eve of Epiphany. In several northern European nations gifts are given on December 6, which is the feast of St Nicholas, the patron saint of children. This is the time to start shopping! THE Christmas count- down is well underway in Barnsley — the town is dripping in festive lights and late-night shopping has begun. Discerning shoppers will be dreaming of delighting their nearest and dearest as they unwrap a thoughtfully chosen Christmas gift. And if you haven’t started your Christmas buying spree yet, you’d better get your skates on to avoid the nightmarish last-minute rush. Since the start of the autumn, the shops have been stocked up with bright, shiny gifts to tempt us to part with our hard-earned brass, but many of us have been putting off the spending until closer to the time. Worse still, some of us haven’t even applied much thought to what we'll buy our nearest and dearest. Shopping for female friends and relatives is usually quite easy. How many women are there out there who wouldn’t appreciate per- fume or jewellery? But if you can find something a bit original they’ll be thrilled at the thought you’ve put into it. Give some thought to their hobbies and inter- ests. If they like cooking, for example, there’s wide-ranging options, from cookbooks to fancy decorative oil and herb gift sets. Buying for men, howev- er, is a whole different kettle of fish. No wonder they end up with draw- ers full of socks and quirky ties. Again, it’s a good idea to search for something which reflects their hob- bies or interests, such as a sport, their car, or DIY. And most men like gadgets and gizmos — and there’s no shortage of those in today’s tech- nological marketplace. Friends who have just set up home will appreci- ate a housewarming present — so long as you are confident you know their tastes. Trendy can- dle holders, artwork, kitchen gadgets, crock- ery, glassware and linen — the list of ideas goes on and on. £29.95 £7 .95 Christopher Jessop welcomes you to the newly refurbished Mustard Pot overlooking Underbank Reservoir £7 .95 served 12 noon- 9 pm. every Sunday Midhopestones (off Stocksbridge bypass) Sunday Lunch Carvery Beef, Pork, Lamb,Turkey, Honey Roast Gammon, Fresh Salmon, Specials Board,Vegetarian option. Christmas pudding’s historyIT IS a little known fact thatChristmas pudding started out asa porridge-like dish called ‘frumen-ty’ – a mixture of wheat meal andboiled meats with raisins, prunes, wine and spices.

Throughout the country, thisdish evolved in different ways, with some creating a more milkydish, but others adding driedfruits, eggs and bread to thickenup the mixture.

It was actually banned in 1664 bythe Puritans, who objected to itsrich ingredients. Richmond Castlecustodian, Lorraine Cooper, exp -lains: “Frumenty was often con-sumed on Christmas Eve, as peo-ple prepared to fast over theChristmas period, but the Puritansbelieved that this was too much ofan indulgence, so actually made itagainst the law to eat it at all.

“Thankfully, King George I came

to the rescue about 50 years later. He loved the dish made withplums, and reintroduced it to themenu.”

According to the Christian tradi-tion, the pudding should be madewith 13 ingredients, to representChrist and his disciples.

Flaming brandy representsChrist’s passion and a sprig ofholly represents his crown ofthorns.

Greener presents arebecomingpopularWITH just a month leftto Christmas, con-sumerism has reachedfever pitch —people arespending and shops arebulging with must-havegifts and children’s toys.

But, as with just aboutevery area of modernlife, there’s now a bur-geoning market in green-er Chris tmas gifts.

The Chronicle askedone of Santa’s elves, whoknows what’s hot whenit comes to Christmaswishes, to give us hispick of the eco-friendlypresent bun ch availablethis year.

For the festive female,he suggested the LaceWall paper Recycled CarParts Handbag, pictured— it’s made from authen-tic US licence plates anddressed up with hun-dreds of Swa r ovski crys-tals.

For frolicking young-sters, he told us about arange of toys made fromrecycled corrugated card-board from Paperpod.

The range includes atoy fort, pictured, a doll’shou se, a playhouse andan aeroplane, each pro-viding a blank canvas forchildren to play, createand decorate.

He also mentioned theRecycled Aircraft TyreHorse Swing (£85), fash-ioned from a recycledtyre in the shape of ahorse, complete withflowing horsey mane.

It has the added advan-tage of being suitable forindoor use in the eventof typical British weath-er.

For the green-fingeredfriend or relative, our elfrecommended The Glutt -onous Gardener, whichproduces witty combina-tions of growables andedibles packaged byhand in wooden crates.

The range includes TheMed iterraneanCourtyard (£60) — a littlefig tree, an olive tree anda pomegranate bush allin terracotta pots com-plete with culture, careand harvesting tips, andThe Gin Drin ker’sCompanion (£56), con-taining a pair of juniperbushes, a full size bottleof Plymouth OriginalGin, a supply of freshlemons, cultivatinginstructions and recipesfor gin and tonic and theperfect dry martini.
