Why
C O U N T E R P O I N T ?
My questions is whether the contrapuntal techniques from musicalcompositions can be applied to visual arts.

Wall versus Hokusai
ARTIST: Jeff Wall
TITLE: A Sudden Gust of Wind (after Hokusai)YEAR: 1993MEDIUM: Transparency in lightbox (2290 x 3770 mm)"This work is one of Wall's earliest digital montages. It refers directlyto a woodblock print by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai. Walltransposes the nineteenth-century Japanese scene to a contemporarycranberry farm near Vancouver. Amateur actors play the odd
assortment of rural and city characters, surprised by the forces ofnature. It required over 100 photographs, taken over the course ofmore than a year, to achieve a seamless montage that gives theillusion of capturing a real moment in time." (source: tate.org.uk)

ARTIST: Katsushika Hokusai
TITLE: 'Ejiri in Suruga Province' (Sunsh Ejiri), From the series Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji' (Fugaku sanj-rokkei)YEAR:1830-1833MEDIUM: colour woodblock printEjiri was a post-station on the Tkaid Highway on the west side ofSuruga Bay, near modern Shimizu City. This was close to the famousbeauty spot of Miho-no-Matsubara. This view depicts a much more
prosaic location, a path that snakes through a marsh. The silhouette of Mt Fuji is drawn with a single line, providing abackdrop for the figures and trees battling the wind in the foreground.Bending their bodies and clutching at scarves and hats, all turn theirfaces away from us - as if we were the source of the blast that carriesoff the tissues that had been tucked into the woman's kimono. Thetissues flit skyward, accompanied by dancing leaves and an escapedhat. The porter who has lost his hat gesticulates in surprise, a circle ofpadding left forlorn on his head.Source: T. ARTIST:Joel Peter WitkinTITLE: Raft of the George W. BushMEDIUM: b&w printYEAR: 2006Witkin made this manifesto photograph against the politics of formerU.S. president , George W.Bush. Accordingly to the artist:"There are many parallels to the Raft of the Medusa and thePresidency of George W. Bush. The Captain of the Medusa was anincompetent, a nobleman who owed his appointment to the ministerialfavor and not seamanship. George W. Bush is also incompetent, a richman's son who gained the presidency through favor and deceit, ratherthan statesmanship. As politician and president, he is a demagogue,a leader who make use of popular prejudices, false claims and
promises in order to gain and hold power. Both these men, the captainof the Medusa, Hugnes de Chaumareges and George W. Bush aremurderers.
