Dolly PartonShe is an America singer songwriter Her star image is massively huge everyone knows her, Dolly is quite a stereotypical cowgirlShe writes her own music, like Jolene Her career began as a child performer on the Cas Walker radio show, then recording a few singles from the age of 13In 1977 she sang “Here You Come Again” which was a pop and country song and for both genres it was a success going onto both of the chartsThen her duet with Kenny Rogers “Islands in the Stream” both topped the U.S pop and country single chartsDolly Parton is the only one out of the six female artists to win the Country Music Associations highest honor, entertainer of the year

“Jolene” camera angles/shotsThe very first shot we see is the introduction of

the song with Dolly Parton’s face in the middle, and then the song title “Jolene”, then underneath that it then says “That Good Ole Nashville 1974”, this is so we know the song title and that Dolly is singing the song, and what she looks like, and that she is most likely going to featuring in the music videoThe next shot we see of the music video is a bloke introducing the song and Dolly Parton, this is the way most country singers get introduced before they start singing. The after that we see is the guitar that is being played, this one of the main instruments that are played in this music video, and a typical country instrument We also see a close-up shot of Dolly Parton singing, this is so we see how she is feeling and what her facial expressions are like, and that we can only focus on her

Page 4: Country Music

Editing Dolly Parton is representing herself in this music video by that she features in all of it, and has the guitar playing in some of the shots near Dolly Parton, this is very typical country music videos by that country singers majority of the time feature singing in them and having all the shots focusing on themJolene doesn’t really follow the male gaze theory by that Laura Mulvey says that male are the dominant ones and the females do as they are told, but for this music video this isn’t true by that Dolly Parton features in all if it and there isn’t many men in the music video apart from the one playing the guitar, but he isn’t in may of the shots of the music video but when he is you cant completely see because Dolly Parton is in the middle and you focus on her a lot more

Lyrics and visuals“Please don’t take him just because you can” Dolly Parton is begging Jolene not to her man, even though Dolly knows that she could but she doesn’t want to as he is Dolly’s and not hers.“Please don’t take my man” this line shows that Dolly Parton is still begging Jolene not to take her man, because she believes she is trying to steal her man“I can not compete with you Jolene” Dolly is saying that Jolene is basically perfect and there isn’t any competition between them two as Jolene would win“But you don’t know at he means to me Jolene” this showing that Dolly Parton really loves her partner and she doesn’t want to lose him to anyone or anything“You could have the choice of men but I could never love again, he’s only one for me Jolene” this is showing that because Dolly Parton knows that Jolene is pretty which she does describe her near the beginning of the song, and that she could have anyone but just not her man, and she is saying at the end of line that if Jolene did take Dolly Parton’s other half, that she wouldn’t be able to move on and love someone else because she loves her partner.

Page 6: Country Music

Mise-En-SceneShe has a white picket fence, a country house, blue sky with a big sun, with some small trees, and a big red barn, which most country Americans haveHer outfit is an all in one suit and is a pink colour and pink represents compassion which she is in this song “Jolene” by that she is compassionate that Jolene doesn’t steal her man off her and that he belongs with Dolly, and she is expressing that through a songThen Dolly’s make-up there isn’t lots of make-up that is standing out however the make-up that you notice is around her eyes the most which she is wearing a bright pink eye shadow and once again it means compassion which Dolly expresses through this music video, it also means love which she does love someone which is her partner and she doesn’t want to lose him

“Rose Garden” camera angles/shots

The first shot we see is the introduction of the song with Lynn Andersons face in the middle, and then the song title “Rose Garden” then underneath that is “That Good Ole Nashville Music 1973”, this is so we know the song title and that Lynn Anderson is singing, what she looks like and that she would probably feature in the music videoIn the second shot we see is Lynn Anderson with a microphone in her hand and behind her are the band members with a bass guitar, electric guitar, keyboard, piano and a violin which are typical country instrumentsThere is also some close-up shots of just Lynn Anderson so we focus on her and nothing else on where she is and what she is doing.

Page 9: Country Music

Editing Lynn Anderson represents that she sings country music by that she represents this very well by that in her song “Rose Garden” she is singing and in the shots and she has band members that are playing the instruments that represent countryThis doesn’t really follow male gaze theory by that Laura Mulvey said that men are the dominated ones and the females do as they say, even though this isn’t completely true with this song by that Lynn Anderson is more dominated in this by that there is more shots of her from close-up shots of her to wide shots, with the wide shots you see the Lynn Anderson and the band members, however Lynn Anderson is always in front of them and she is also the one we focus on the most, rather than the men who are playing the instruments.

Page 10: Country Music

Lyrics and visualsLynn Anderson version of “Rose Garden” remains one of the most successful country crossover recordings of all-timeThis song is a performance based, with Lynn Anderson featuring in the whole music video"I could promise you things like big diamond rings“ is more what a man would sing, however it shows that Lynn Anderson is willing to promise big, and by saying big diamonds rings shows this because diamond rings a big, and Lynn Anderson is comparing it“Come along and share the good times while we can” she is saying exactly what is said in this line by that you should come along and enjoy the times that you do because it isn’t going to last forever and there will be a time when you can no longer do it anymore or be around to do it. Or you could even look back in life and wonder why you never did thatHer song is a nice relaxing song and a type of song that is replayable by listening and watching.

Page 11: Country Music

Mise-en-sceneLynn Anderson is wearing a long green dress and little cardie around her shoulders, this isn’t completely a typical outfit a country singer would wear, however it still have aspects of countryside in the outfit by that green represents nature and that is what the country (nature) and by looking at Lynn Anderson’s hair you can tell that she is a country singer by how her is big and outwards, like most country people hair styles are likeThe location in this music video, is outside a county house with her outside is the band players, and Lynn Anderson being able to walk around the placeshe also has a big red barn in front of the house, this represents that this is a country American barn.
