the CURE

By Kurt N. Woeller, D.O.

Did you know there are nutritional and complementary medical treatments available to treat mental health

problems? Anxiety, bipolar, depression, eating disorders and even schizophrenia can be managed and treated successfully with natural medicines.

You see the ads on TV for medications to treat depression. We hear the stories of growing numbers of children with autism or attention deficit. It seems no matter where you turn someone is either taking a prescription drug or is looking to get off a psychiatric medication. Some current national statistics:

• There has been a 35 fold increase in children disabled with mental illness.

• Approximately 40 million Americans age 18 and older have an anxiety crisis in a given year.

• Approximately 15% of adults will experience severe depressed moods during their lifetime with about 15% of these adults committing suicide. Suicide is also the 3rd leading cause of death in youth aged 15 to 24 years old.

• Eating disorders, such as Anorexia Nervosa, have the highest mortality rate of any mental health illness at 10% at 10 years and 20% at 20 years. Anorexia also has the highest risk of suicide among ALL psychiatric illnesses.

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the alarming statistics regarding mental health issues in our country, and the problem is getting worse. According to James M. Greenblatt, M.D. Chief Medical Officer of Walden Behavioral Care and Assistant Professor at Tufts Medical School and author of Answers to Anorexia states that “there is not one drug approved for the treatment of anorexia” despite the fact that these individuals are commonly placed on medications that have little to no effect.

Nutritional medicine may hold the key to many individuals suffering with one of these debilitating disorders. There are a variety of examples to prove this point. Here are just a few that are important to consider:

• Amino acid deficiencies can predispose an individual to imbalanced brain chemistry. For example, tryptophan is a precursor for serotonin which if inadequate can leave

individuals feeling depressed, moody, and anxious. In 2009, in the Archives of General Psychiatry, it was reported that over 27 million people were prescribed antidepressants, or more than 10% of the US population. Many of these drugs are the common SSRI’s (Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors) like Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil and Lexapro.

• Folate and B12 imbalances are often prevalent in depression. Replacing these vitamins in therapeutic levels can have a beneficial effect on mood and mental function.

• Zinc deficiency has been recognized for years in the Eating Disorder community, particularly those with Anorexia Nervosa. Zinc supports brain chemistry. With chronically low zinc the function of digestion, taste, growth and immune function are all impaired. Zinc also has a role in how the brain learns, perceives, and interprets information such as fear and stress.

According to Dr. Greenblatt and others, this disorder is classically a disease of starvation and the subsequent problems such as anxiety, obsessive compulsive behavior, rigidity and perseveration of thought can lead to suicidal tendencies and are the result of a starved brain from a lack of nutrients. In reality, this can be said of most mental health problems, and in our experience is absolutely true.

This article is not meant to insinuate that traditional psychiatry and various medications have no role in mental health treatment. Obviously, these disorders are complex and multi-factorial with respects to causation. However, the complete lack of awareness within much of the traditional medical community regarding nutritional medicine is shocking and tragic. Too many people continue to suffer with mental health disorders who can be helped – and in many cases recovered – when the appropriate diagnostic tests and nutritional and complementary therapies are employed. It is time to shift the paradigm in assessment and treatment for the millions of individuals needlessly suffering from these debilitating disorders and once again look to a more comprehensive and balanced approach that nutritional medicine has to offer.

When one thinks of Oprah, her celebrity status, immense popularity, enormous wealth, empowerment and philanthropy, few would argue

that she is in a class by herself. However, when one thinks of Oprah, and her struggles with weight; her yo-yo dieting, short term successes, long term failures, feelings of frustration, self loathing and blame...she is in a class of 130 million other overweight/obese Americans who have tried and failed to maintain weight-loss over and over and over again. But let’s not forget that Oprah has a triumvirate of highly specialized, renowned, “health care” providers that surround her. There is Dr. Mehmet Oz, a brilliant physician and everyones’ Marcus Welby; Bob Green, fitness guru to the stars, and Michael Beckwith, her spiritual advisor (almost forgot, a personal chef). So, if Oprah, with the help, support, and guidance of these extraordinary people is unable to take weight off and keep it off...one might rationally ask, “what hope does anyone else have?” At first glance...not much, zero, nada! But wait a second. To this physician there seems to be a major disconnect. Thus allow me to weigh-in. (pun intended) Why is it that over the past 18 years there have been thousands of our patients at Weight No More Medical Associates who have been successful at long term weight-loss and maintenance? Is it possible that physicians like myself, who specialize in medical weight-loss, i.e.: bariatric physicians, who see patients day after day, month after month, year after year, know something that Oprah’s gurus do not? The answer, I believe, is yes! When Bob Green stated on Larry King (Jan 7, 2009), that losing weight is not “rocket science”; one simply has to eat in moderation and exercise more; he is doing a great disservice to the millions of overweight Americans who do exactly that and find it doesn’t work. Bob doesn’t understand that diet and exercise by themselves fail miserably for most, for sound physiological reasons. When you eat less, metabolism slows, fat oxidation and muscle expenditure decrease, with resultant eventual weight regain, frustration and failure. And when Bob

tells Larry that “weight is a symptom of something else that needs to change in your life”; suggesting that until one begins to make better choices, becomes more disciplined, maybe more religious; in other words “get their act together,” they have little hope for weight-loss success. Once again, a great disservice to the millions of overweight/obese who make correct choices, are disciplined, exhibit self esteem and “have their act together” in spite of their weight issues. Which reminds me, maybe someone should inform the Dalai Lama...because he’s about 25 pounds overweight; and maybe he’s on the wrong spiritual path!!! Yes, I believe Oprah and millions like her would do well to see a physician who treats obesity as a chronic, metabolic, progressive, and genetic disease on a long term basis for control, not cure.

Who understands and empathizes with the psychological, prejudicial, and discriminatory aspects that can have a profound effect on quality of life issues. Someone who has the expertise to effectively and safely use combination pharmacotherapy as an integral component in addition to diet and exercise protocols for long

term success. Someone who knows based on clinical studies that a lot of money is squandered on worthless B12 and HCG injections and dietary supplements touted for weight-loss that serve only to “slim your wallet, not your waist” If you are serious about losing weight, not just a quick fix, but for a lifetime of success, go see a weight-loss specialist; a Bariatric physician. And while you’re at it, e-mail Oprah to do the same! Thank you for listening.

Robert Skversky, M.D. has devoted the past 18 years of his professional career to the medical treatment of the overweight patient. He has been featured in the WSJ and interviewed on CBS, NBC, ABC, E! and Wellness Hour discussing his treatment protocols for long term weight-loss. Please visit www.weightnomore.com to learn more.

To the moon and back.

According to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, that’s the distance the average gray whale swims in its lifetime.

Yet how many of us who live within an hour’s drive of the coast take the opportunity to see these amazing, gentle giants as they make their yearly 10,000-mile migration between the warm Pacific waters of Baja Mexico and their frigid arctic feeding grounds?

Grab your jackets and deck shoes and head out to Oceanside Harbor because December through early April is whale-watching season.

“We’re seeing gray whales all the time now,” said Captain Jerry Kohler, a veteran pilot of the sport fishing vessels for Helgren’s Sportfishing which has been providing whale watching tours out of the harbor for many years.

“We started seeing them around December 26, and it’s been a pretty good season so far for whale watching.”

The excursions usually last for two hours and since it only takes five minutes to get out past the Oceanside Harbor, the whale watching can commence fairly quickly. During the week, there are usually two tours a day, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., with three tours on Saturday and Sunday at 8:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 2 p.m.

Along the way, all kinds of ocean-dwelling critters like dolphins, sea lions, birds, even other species of whales can be spotted, turning the excursions into “real sea life adventures,” said Kohler, adding that that Helgren’s whale watch captains also provide a narrative about cetaceans along the way.

The stars of the show, the Pacific gray whales make the longest migration known to mammals, often cruising slowly through nearshore waters at a speed of two to six miles per hour. Nearly hunted to extinction twice in the last 150 years, an international ban on the commercial harvest of gray whales was put in place in 1946. Further marine mammal protection and endangered species laws in the early 1970s continued to safeguard the population and it has since rebounded to around 20,000, perhaps nearly as many as existed before the heyday of whaling, say marine life experts.

Helgren’s offers a range of affordable excursion rates, depending upon the day of the week, excursion time, group sizes, and ages, so be sure to inquire about ticket costs before booking your tour.

For an even more up close and personal experience with Mother Nature’s most majestic creatures, check out Sunset Sails, also located in Oceanside Harbor, which offers whale watching tours by sailboat.

“Whale watching while on a sailboat can be a quieter and smoother ride than on the larger fishing boats,” said Captain Steve Ford, owner and pilot of the “Bueno” a 36-foot sailboat

Taste of Temecula - Temecula Valley’s “Online Social Magazine” has become home to many locals. Started in June 2009, it was created to help local residents and friends enjoy and get the most out of wine country. Answering questions like “Who has the best cup of coffee?” “Which winery makes a fantastic Chardonnay?” “Who has the best Happy Hour?” and “Where are the best hiking trails?” Needless to say, watching our town grow has been exciting, interesting, and rewarding. Taste of Temecula has been there to help you discover and enjoy what makes the Temecula Valley unique and a fantastic place to live.

In its infancy, ToT started as a blog, but has since grown into so much more. One of the amazing things is that the entire staff – from writers to editors to photographers – have all been volunteers driven by a true desire to make a difference in the community by bringing you articles on restaurants, coffee shops, wineries & wine, recipes, special events, things to do, and more. It’s all about helping to support our family of local businesses.

Besides our published articles, ToT also loves to organize events. Every second Wednesday we host a “ToT Lunch Meet and Greet” at a local restaurant where 25–60 friends take the time out of their busy lives to “Eat, Drink & Be Merry.” Thursdays we host “Mix It Up’s (ToT’s Happy Hours) where we chill at a favorite local hot spot and enjoy tasty drinks & appetizer specials at great places such as D’Canters, Rustico, La Cocina, and Wine on a Dime, just to name a few.

There are many new changes coming as we start taping a “Wine & Dine” video series featuring a local chef ’s favorite food & wine pairing. “Making a Difference” will highlight those who are dedicated to giving back to our community via fundraisers and charities. Our new wedding/bridal series displays the newest bridal fashions, who’s making the best cakes, how to do it all regardless of your budget, plus numerous exclusive engagements hosted by Taste of Temecula – we have tons of plans for the new year. Get ready!

The Pride of Italy in the Inland Empire

R estaurants abound in the Southwest Riverside County, giving us a plethora of dining choices. If you are in the

mood for a taste of Italy, I highly recommend That’s Amore Cucina Italiana in Hemet. Sicilian born, Chef Carlo Di Gristina offers a menu of authentic dishes that are on par with the finest Italian restaurants in the region.

His diligence for creating mouthwatering cuisine is evident with his insistence of using the highest quality ingredients available. Chef Carlo carefully selects the best meat and seafood to masterfully blend with an array of spices and pastas to really “WOW” the senses. Fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables are among the many staples in his exhibition kitchen. The superior quality of his ingredients bodes well to Chef Carlo’s stellar reputation for creating only the finest Italian fare.

The restaurant is comfortable and inviting. The interior is accented with solid stonework and pillars, complemented with

wood lattice and arches. The whimsical ambiance gives diners a feeling of being in a Sicilian courtyard. There is also a large outdoor seating area with umbrella covered tables.

Throughout the past year, I have been a frequent visitor at That’s Amore. I can attest to the consistency of delicious menu items

prepared to absolute excellence. In addition to his extensive lunch and dinner menus, Chef Carlo keeps guests coming back with a variety of unique daily specials.

During a recent visit, my husband and I enjoyed a flavorful four-course dinner. Our meal began with two hors d’ oeuvres – the garden fresh Bruschetta Napoletana and Caponata Siciliana.

The Caponata was the superstar of this course. The tapenade was a cool blend of eggplant, green olives, celery, onions, and capers in a sweet and tangy sauce. A spoonful atop a slice of toasted Italian bread was simply delectable.

Before the main course, we enjoyed a special spinach salad created by Chef Carlo during the past holiday season. He dressed up the healthy greens with candied walnuts, mandarin oranges, grapefruit, red onion and crumbled gorgonzola cheese. As a finishing touch, he drizzled the salad with a wild berry vinaigrette making it irresistibly delicious.

We both chose an entrée from the list of daily specials. My husband was quite pleased with his Vald’ Ostana, an enormous bone-in stuffed pork chop. Inside the succulent meat was a blend of prosciutto and Fontina cheese. The sizzling hot chop was topped by a sherry-infused hearty mushroom sauce. This dish was served with fresh vegetables and penne pasta in a creamy tomato sauce.

As a seafood lover, I opted for the Stuffed Shrimp entrée, a decision that I did not regret. Each prawn was filled with delicate lump crab meat and then baked in a rich piccata sauce. A generous portion of Alfredo penne pasta was a welcomed addition to the dish. Perfectly al dente garden vegetables made the whole meal come together with a delightful freshness.

The fourth and final course was a Cassata Siciliana, best described as a spumoni flavored ice-cream cake. It was presented with a raspberry chocolate sauce and garnished with mint. Capturing a traditional flavor, this light treat was the perfect ending to the gourmet meal.

Chef Carlo and his wife Debbie welcome you to enjoy fine Italian cuisine at affordable prices. Plan an unforgettable culinary experience now at That’s Amore Cucina Italiana!

• Gently push the outside pan, when the center of the cake is no longer wobbly the cake is done. About 45 minutes.

• Carefully remove both pans from the oven. • Then remove the cake from the water bath and carefully

remove the foil as well. • Allow the cake to cool completely in the pan.

FOR THE GANACHE• In a small saucepan over medium heat bring the soy or almond

milk to a simmer. • Remove the milk from the heat. • Add the chocolate chips and whisk until completely melted

and smooth. • Leaving the cake in the pan; pour just enough Grenache to

cover the top of the cake. Save the remaining Ganache for another use. (Truffles)

• Refrigerate the cake in the pan until Ganache is set, about two hours.

• The cake can be made up to three days ahead. Cover and keep refrigerated.

CUTTING THE CAKE• Run a warm knife around the edges of the pan to loosen the

cake before releasing the sides. • Score the cake in half and then into quarters.• Warm a thin knife under hot water and dry the blade. • Cut one quarter of the cake and then cut that quarter into four

equal pieces. • Serve with fresh berries.

FOR THE CRUST• Toast the almonds in a large pan over high heat. Keep moving

the almonds around (Jiffy Pop style) until you see color on the almonds.

• Lower the heat to medium and continue to agitate the almonds until they are a uniform light brown. Place the nuts on a plate to cool.

• When the almonds are cool place them in a food processor and chop them into a fine meal. (About 30 seconds)

• In a medium bowl mix the ground almonds, butter and sugar with a fork.

• Secure the sides of a 9"-10" spring form pan.• Using the back of a spoon, spread the crust mixture all over the

bottom of the pan.• This crust does not need to be pre-baked.

FOR THE CAKE• Preheat the oven to 350º.• Wrap three layers of foil around the bottom outside of the

spring form pan.• Be sure the foil covers the entire outside of the pan. (This is to

prevent water from penetrating)• Using a double boiler, whisk the coffee and sugar until the

sugar is dissolved.• Add the chocolate and butter and stir until the mixture is

combined and the chocolate is fully melted. • In a food processor, puree the tofu, corn starch, and chocolate

mixture until smooth.• Pour the batter into the prepared pan.• Place the spring form pan in large roasting pan or hotel pan. • Place the two pans inside the oven.• Using a pitcher, carefully add enough hot water to the outside

pan to come halfway up sides of the cake.

CHEF ROBERTO’S VEGAN LA BÊTE NOIRE “THE BLACK BEAST”

This rich, dense cake is a chocolate lover’s paradise. It is normally made with a ton of eggs and heavy cream and although my version is not exactly low-cal it is way better for you than the original and the flavor is identical (if not better). The best part is that because there is no egg in this recipe it is almost fool proof. A first-time baker can pull this off, I promise. If you have a nut allergy the crust can be omitted, just line the bottom of the pan with parchment paper. I can’t think of a better dessert to come home to on Valentine’s Day than fresh strawberries and a Vegan La Bête Noire.

The winter rains have filled up the local lakes again, the fish are fat and fine, and the conditions are perfect for angler

nirvana.

“Fishing conditions are absolutely the best that they’ve been in a long time,” said Art Berry, a highly respected fishing guide and professional bass tournament winner who knows Southern California’s lakes like the inside of his tackle box. “Water levels are up and because the rains have filled up the banks now, there are a lot of nutrients in the lakes for feeding the fish. It’s going to be a great year for catching fish!”

If it’s largemouth bass you’re after, Diamond Valley Lake is considered a premier site for catching one of those giants. The 4,500-acre lake, which is the largest freshwater reservoir in southern California, opened in 2003, but it has already produced largemouth bass over the 10-pound range, including a record breaker in 2007 weighing more than 16 pounds. In recently years, DVL has secured a reputation as a world-class largemouth bass fishery, with more than fifty bass tournaments taking place on the lake annually.

“One major key to growing those giant bass are the 160-foot to 260-foot deep channels running through the lake,” said Berry, so if you’re planning on fishing by boat at DVL, you’d better forget about a leisurely time on the lake, and instead plan on keeping your boat on the move because “the fish are always moving,” said Berry.

And those bass are darn smart too.

“The bass feed on rainbow trout,” Berry said, “and when the trucks come to unload the new stocks for rainbow trout in the lake, the bass hear the beeping sounds that the trucks make while backing up. And they race over to where the trout is being unloaded!”

But don’t despair if it’s not your day to catch one of the big bass whoppers because there’s plenty of good-sized smallmouth bass (catch and release only), red ear sunfish, bluegill, blue and channel catfish, crappie, tule perch and rainbow trout at DVL. The lake is open daily from 6:00 am - 6:30 pm., and all anglers must display a current California fishing license.

According to Berry, Southwest Riverside County fishing sites like Lake Skinner, Lake Perris, Vail Lake and Lake Elsinore should also be luring in anglers for good fishing.

“Vail and Skinner are great spots, and I have clients who love to fish in those lakes,” said Berry. “Vail is about 1,100 acres and it’s got bass, rainbow trout, catfish and panfish. The same with Skinner which is about 1,200 acres, but what a lot of people don’t know about Skinner is that it’s a great place to catch frogs if you love to eat frog legs.”

If fishing from the shore is your thing, there’s plenty of opportunity at other area lakes for that, too.

Who ever thought that watching race cars get down and dirty could be so much fun?

The odds are that’s what you’ll discover if you find yourself at any of the car racing events at the Perris Auto Speedway’s premier dirt track this year!

So forget about it if you didn’t fess up to your speedway-bound date that you’ve never understood why souped-up hot rods constantly looping an oval track is such a big deal. Or that you think your motor sport-loving friends’ passion about the wildly popular 800-plus horsepower, open-wheel machines known as the USAC/CRA 410 Sprint Car is, well, a little exhausting.

Just give it up because you won’t be able to help getting swept up by the noisy, high-powered crazy action going on at the speedway’s half-mile clay track. The wheel-spinning and head-turning thrills are contagious when you root for drivers in revved-up stock cars, and sprint cars navigate the dirt track at breakneck speeds and gaspingly tight corners all the while trying not to “tag the cushion” (hit the wall) or do a “big bicycle upside down” (roll, baby, roll).

But don’t forget the wildest of the wild cards, the X-factor that is the dirt track itself, says Perris Auto Speedway president Don Kazarian. Or, to glamorize it just a bit, the “clay-mixed-with-dirt” track.

“Most people don’t know this because it’s not publicized as much, but dirt racing is just as popular, if not more popular, in this country as motor sport events on asphalt-covered tracks,” said Kazarian.

“Racing on a dirt track like Perris Auto Speedway is so different than on asphalt because it’s never in the same condition day after day because the weather changes all the time,” he explained.

“The state of the dirt track is the big surprise element in the races. You never know whether to expect that the track will be nice and perfectly tacky or too heavy after rainfall or like hardpan soil when the weather is 105 degrees.”

Located at Perris Fairgrounds, the Perris Auto Speedway began holding races in 1996. “It is the only dirt track between San Diego and Orange County,” said Kazarian, adding that the events at the Perris oval can draw between two thousand and three thousand fans per show from those counties, Riverside and San Bernardino, but also from Los Angeles, Central California and Arizona.

During the March through November 2011 season, the speedway will be hosting racing events with stock cars—super, street, factory, and modified—and CDCRA Dwarf cars.

ince 1990, family owned and operated Olivera’s Cake Gallery has been serving Southwest Riverside County at

several locations with both decadent and unique cake creations as well as gourmet coffee and smoothies. While the Red Velvet cake persists as the best-selling confection, Olivera’s also does

cannoli, cream puffs, petit fours, cupcakes and more. Now operating out of a single location in Hemet, Olivera’s continues to be the premier bakery for amazing cakes for most any occasion.

Olivera Petrovski, along with her creative design team - husband John and son Rick - specialize in custom cake creations. If you can imagine it, they can make it - out of cake! Olivera’s is able to create cakes in any shape, size or color that you can fathom. The bakery concocts custom creations for weddings, anniversaries, Quinceañeras and more. You can even email them a photograph, and have that image put onto your cake. While cakes covered with fondant are all the rage, this team can create unbelievable results from more reasonably-priced icing and whipped cream. The possibilities are endless!

Olivera’s does over 100 wedding cakes per year. One of their creations was even highlighted on the WE tv show, “Bridezillas” in 2010. She also had a cake featured in the motion picture, “My Girl,” and built a cake for a visit by President Carter in Detroit years ago. Olivera has noticed a trend in cakes - the

easy ENTERTAINMENT

Ahhh sweet love. You can’t help but think of Valentine’s Day and all the people you love when you think of February,

but it does also make you think of the months to come and all the things to love that go along with them. Longer days, brisk mornings with just a hint of warmth, clean-smelling air and so much green. Love is shared with all kinds of people and things in our lives! Now is a great time to celebrate that……your friends, your family, your kids or the things you love to see. How about the food you love, the places you love to go to, or the things you’d love to do… hmmm so many reasons for a little gathering. So why not pick a few of the people you love, and enjoy doing some of the things you love together!

With so many beautiful views in Wine Country, the Santa Rosa Plateau and De Luz, there are a lot of choices. Most of my friends love wine and who doesn’t love cheese? Destination wine and cheese party it is. Select a location in our Valley that is a quick but scenic drive to get to, but not too far from your home. Send out an invite with directions to that spot, and ask your guests to bring a wedge of their favorite cheese and a bottle of one of

their favorite wines. Pack a picnic basket with bubbly and brie to start your party when everyone arrives. After a little clinking of glasses and enjoying of the view, head back to your home where you have prepared the rest of the evening.

Have several platters with labeled cheese ready to go with suggestions of what type of wine they go best with. Also have a stack of wine tasting cards where your guests can jot down notes on flavors and aromas as well as ratings of the wine they taste. You could ask each of your guests to bring a different wine so you have a nice variety. Throw in a little blind taste test for fun and a prize.

For decorations go simple: white crisp table cloths, wood cutting board, baskets, a few candle sticks, votives holders filled with corks or wrapped in old labels. Make sure to have plenty of French bread and water crackers on hand - something mild so as to not interfere with the cheese and wine flavors. Depending on your crowd you may want to have some additional platters of food ready to go after your tasting. Something simple you can pull out of the fridge…. carry on your picnic idea with cold grilled chicken, a salad and a platter of brownies.

So take this season of love to a new level by not just sharing it with the one you love, but all that you love in the months to come.

can be as creative as you would like with the container - there is no right or wrong; they don’t even need to be the same. Just choose something you love. The tags can also be as simple or creative as you would like them to be. You can write each person’s name on a piece of ribbon or buy decorative paper and create a custom tag for each guest. These little floral name cards also make a unique gift for each guest to take home.

Since our theme is “favorite things”, ask each guest to bring their favorite flower(s) and then combine them all to make one floral arrangement. You can have a large vase ready with water and a few greens, then place a small trash can and floral scissors near the vase. Have each guest cut and add their favorites to the vase - placement doesn’t have to be perfect, just have fun! This same idea can be done using a container filled with floral foam and water. Once everyone has arrived, you will have a beautiful arrangement that is as unique as your guests.

How wonderful to be able to spend time with those we love and share with them the things that are special to us. I hope you will be inspired to host a party and celebrate a few of your favorite things.

“These are a few of my favorite things… “a few of the things I love.

It’s the first part of the New Year and a time to celebrate all the things and people we love, so why not be a little romantic?

Why not host a night of romance and surround yourself with all your favorite things? What a great theme for a dinner party and a fun way to bring people together. If books are what you love, have a party where everyone comes as their favorite literary character. Maybe you enjoy good wine. Have an evening of wine tasting and cheese under the stars. If old romantic movies are a favorite, invite some friends over for dinner and a movie. When you’re choosing your decor for the evening, think about the flowers that always make you smile or feel a little sexy and then incorporate them into the evening.

A single flower makes a special place card holder for the table and an easy DIY project. For each guest place a single stem into a small jar or vase and attach a tag with their name. You

Feeling a bit housebound after the gray days of winter? Then it’s definitely time to start packing in plans for some quality

living time in the Great Outdoors this year.

Luckily for residents of the Temecula Valley and surrounding communities there are several campgrounds that are both close enough to be a convenient drive and far enough to get away from it all!

So, if you are dreaming about relaxing around a campfire or hitting the hiking trails, here are just of few of the many local camping areas located in Southwest Riverside County:

VAIL LAKE RESORTLocated about ten miles east of Old Town Temecula on Hwy. 79 South, Vail Lake Resort offers an outdoor experience for RV’ers and tent campers beside Vail Lake, an 1,100-acre fresh water reservoir. There are more than five hundred campsites on the grounds, and the surrounding 9,000 pristine acres are dotted by ancient oak trees and scrub chaparral.

Boating, fishing and water sports activities rights on the privately-owned lake are reserved for annual members only, but RV access is open to the public with a paid nightly reservation or a day use pass. Tent camping sites are also available for additional fees.

If you need to cool off, there is a water slide and three pools at the resort - a children’s swimming pool, a wading pool and an adult swimming pool.

The main hub of the RV resort is the Vail Lake Village, about two miles west of the lake. If you want to kick up your heels, there is a wine and beer bar on Friday and Saturday nights, nightly entertainment on holidays, and great tacos from a Mexican grill!

LAKE SKINNER RECREATION AREA, RIVERSIDE COUNTYIt may be extra crowded for the annual Balloon & Wine Festival, but for the rest of the year, Lake Skinner offers a lot of camping room.

About ten miles north of Temecula off Rancho California Road, it’s an enjoyable cruise through Temecula wine country to the Lake Skinner Recreational Area. The campground itself is another quarter-mile past the main gate.

There are 158 sites with full hook-ups, 16 with water & electric, 39 with water only, with a total 300 developed campsites for both tent and RV campers. There are three major campsite areas, and the majority of the RVs are in sites B and C, with tent campers in site A. Full hookups and showers are available, along with a convenient camp store.

Groups can choose from several settings, including two new mini-group areas in Campground C and a separate, reservations available at sites overlooking the lake. Although the lake is the main attraction, there is no body contact allowed in it because it is a domestic water supply. Private boats are allowed, but there are some restrictions. Fishing is very popular here and you can rent 4-person boats or 10-person pontoons for the day.

Several new amenities include a water splash play area, a multi-use trail, and a state of the art amphitheatre. Other features include a public swimming pool which is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. There are also hiking and nature trails all over the lake area. The recreational area also offers day-use areas for picnics and BBQs.

If you are the kind of camper who enjoys an open spaced atmosphere, making friends with his or her campsite neighbors, and who likes to be close to great wineries, then the Lake Skinner Recreational Area is right for you!

and Campground today, located amongst walnut, pine and deciduous trees, offers both RV and tent camping sites adjacent to the lake and the boat launch. There are currently 120 RV or tent sites which have electric and water hookups. There are 10 RV only sites with electric, water, and sewer hookups. There are 51 tent sites with water available.

Fire pits and picnic tables are not at every site, and fires are permitted only within a fire ring or other commercial portable fire pit. And don’t worry about noisy campsite neighbors—there is a strict 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. quiet time policy for loud music and generators.

Be sure to make reservations for the campground at least 3 days in advance. There is a 2-night minimum stay on most weekends with a 3-night stay on holiday weekends.

And if you get bored from all that communing with nature at the Lake Elsinore campgrounds, you might be able to catch a minor league ballgame at the Storm. Or you can try out skydiving offered by a nearby airport. Now that’s some real outdoor exposure!

Visit /www.lake-elsinore.org for information about the campground, marinas, fishing areas, fees, and rules.

LAKE PERRIS STATE PARK RECREATIONAL AREA CAMPGROUND, PERRISWith an average attendance of 1.1 million visitors, Lake Perris is Southern California’s most popular recreation destinations. Each site has a table, fire ring with a grill and access to water.

Camp sites are assigned on a first come, first serve basis. Campground hours are variable based on day and time of the year. According to the park’s rules, no more than eight people and three vehicles are allowed per site. From June 1 through November 30, the maximum length of stay at a campsite is 15 days.

Water and restrooms with free hot showers are available and are handicap accessible. The RV sites have hookups for water, electricity and sink water disposal.

risp air whispering through the pines, fresh snow piled on the sides of the roads; all this leading to my first glimpse of

the bright blue lake. Yes, I was ready for our weekend getaway from reality and Lake Arrowhead was about to deliver.

We made the drive from Murrieta up the hill in just under 90 minutes and I was surprised how easy it was even on a late Friday afternoon. As we pulled into Lake Arrowhead Village, I immediately felt the stress of the week fall away. The Alpine styled buildings welcomed us with a quiet charm and promised a weekend of relaxation in this romantic mountain setting.

Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa is situated right next to the Village and turned out to be the perfect place to stay. The Lobby is dramatic and has the mountain feel that you would expect with lots of wood, soaring ceilings and a welcoming fire burning in the large hearth. Our generous room was well appointed with a spectacular view of the lake. It was decorated in the craftsman style with rich warm hues and had a full sitting area along with a comfy bed.

After settling in, we decided to go down to the hotel restaurant Bin 189 to enjoy a drink at the bar. The impressive two-story, glass walled wine cellar makes for a dramatic entrance and the large stone fireplace gives the space a warm friendly glow. The bartender mixed a perfect martini and my weekend was officially off to a good start!

We walked over to one of the Village landmarks, Papagayo’s Mexican Restaurant, for dinner. It was very busy with a good mix of tourists and locals. Everyone seemed to run into someone they knew and wasted no time to catch up on all of the happenings. Our dinner portions were huge and even with the full house we received excellent service.

The next morning we strolled down by the water’s edge and stopped in at The Tea Exchange for a delicious Blueberry Vanilla Tea Latte. We had heard the night before that Belgian Waffle Works is the best place for breakfast and we weren’t disappointed. Staying true to their name I had to try one of the Belgian Waffle specialties. The Strawberry-Banana Royal had a delectable mix of juicy strawberries and fresh bananas over a crisp waffle. It was topped off with real whipped cream and a little maple syrup and I was in heaven!

Lake Arrowhead Village turned out to have plenty to keep us occupied for the rest of the day. We visited the mix of outlet stores and specialty shops. The Pendleton outlet had a nice selection of plaid throws, the Bass outlet was a good store for casual apparel and Coach had a big collection of handbags. We had a real treat visiting the local specialty stores and found a trendy mix of clothing at Triangle and a fun assortment of dog treats at Three Dog Bakery.

Vino100 turned out to be a good place for a break in the afternoon. They were pouring flights of artisan beers and boutique wines. We had a light snack and sipped the flights while over looking the lake. We made a quick stop at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory for one of their famous caramel apples before heading back to the hotel.

We ended the magical day with dinner at Bin 189. We dined on beautifully prepared braised Short Ribs and Seared Diver Scallops. The service was impeccable and, as we had come to expect with all of the hotel staff, very warm and friendly. As we enjoyed the ambiance of the mountain lodge, I totally embraced the romance of this world so close to home, but so far removed from life down the hill.

What could be more WILD than a store full of sick guitars? Tucked away in a nondescript industrial area in

downtown Riverside is a hidden gem - a boutique guitar store that is much more inside than it seems to be from the outside. Lining the hallways are dozens of beautiful guitars - even to this untrained eye, it is obvious that these are not your run-of-the-mill instruments. While Wild West Guitars offers some top-of-the-line selections, they also carry mid-level guitars as well as boutique amplifiers, pedals and accessories.

Owner Mark Herbert had dreams in his youth of becoming the next Rock Star. While that did not happen, he turned his passion for all things music into a business. Starting in 2001 carrying primarily Baker guitars, Wild West now is an authorized dealer for PRS Guitars and is their #1 Private Stock Dealer in the USA, and they are also a Fender Custom Shop top-10 dealer. They also carry Gibson, Suhr, Charvel, Jackson, G&L and Music Man, just to name a few. The store is a vast collection of amazing instruments (private collections and vintage), and Wild West has sold instruments to more than a few professional musicians… James Root, John Mayer, and Steve Miller. They will accept trade-ins, and encourage serious musicians to tour the facility and “test-drive” your new equipment before you purchase it - which you can do in one of their private display rooms or on their stage. Wild West Guitars also hosts free guitar clinics, about six a year. You can join the mailing list on their website, www.wildwestguitars.com to be notified about upcoming events.

And what events! In the back of the store is a private club called the Voodoo Lounge (VoodooLounge.org) - a non-profit organization that organizes

shows for private parties of up to 250. Members and their guests can enjoy a venue reminiscent of a rain forest jungle - vines and rocks, elaborately decorated yet inviting and intimate with an amazing sound and lighting system. Many big names have performed there: Foghat, Robin Trower, BOC, John Waite, Warrant, Starship, Great White, Eddie Money, RATT and others. Professional athletes and other celebrities are seen regularly at their shows.

While Wild West Guitars does business worldwide via internet sales, the store is a little-known musician’s mecca. The staff is comprised of musicians that are as zealous about their products as their customers, and will go above and beyond to find the best price and perfect match for each client. Also part of the team is Mark Dickerson, a renowned luthier that has worked on many rock star guitars - Slash and Van Halen, for example - and will set up each purchased guitar to the player’s specifications, as well as handle any repairs needed on your own equipment. Truly the “Mercedes of the guitar store world,” Wild West Guitars is a guitarist’s paradise. It’s not as

far as you’d think - make the trip, you won’t be sorry you did.

Wild West Guitars is located at 1546 7th Street in Riverside.

The Making of a Great Wine The largest American Wine competition in the world Awards Warrant Red the Silver Medal This

past week, a local wine, Warrant Red, created by Kristain Story and Erik Turner of the rock band Warrant, took the coveted Silver Medal in the most prestigious wine competition in the world, The San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.

When you take two forces of nature and bring them together good things are bound to happen. Bringing Napa Valley wine-maker Kristian Story together with Erik Turner of the rock band Warrant is one of those magical collaborations with amazing results: Warrant Red, a delicious new limited blend of wine from Artistwine.com

Kristian Story is a Napa Valley, California winemaker, who employs ancient winemaking techniques to create his hand-crafted, unfiltered and unrefined wines, fermented with French yeasts. Focused on the limited production of red Bordeaux varietals and small lots of Chardonnay, Merlot and Petite Sirah, Kristian believes the minimalist approach preserves and expresses the true varietal character of Kristian Story Wines. Warrant is an American Rock band from Hollywood that experienced success from 1989 to present with five albums reaching international sales of over 10 million. The band first came into the national spotlight with their debut album Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich, and one of its singles, “Heaven,” reached #1 in Rolling Stone and #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band continued its success in the 90’s with the 2x Platinum album Cherry Pie and the gold album Dog Eat Dog. The band continues to tour and record all around the U.S. today.

The goal of combining Wine and Rock is to reach people and music fans in a new and different way. The Warrant Red wine has been a project with both Kristian Story and Erik Turner together. The wine has brought on a different way to share their passion for music and wine with both a new and old audience.

When asked about the wine, Erik Turner said that the wine is delicious and by drinking it you will become smarter, richer and better looking! “Seriously though,” he adds, “I am new to the wine world and when I tested and mixed the wines with Kristian Story I was blown away with what has now become Warrant Red. We think it is great that the first wine we did has won such a prestigious award.”

As with the strum of the electric guitar and the bang of a big bass drum within a rock anthem melody, this sexy wine strokes balance and resonates with flavors of cherries, raspberries and mocha. The notes finish with innuendo of espresso and tobacco. Great acidity pairs it well with foods such as spaghetti, beef, and spicy dishes. Also pairs well with classic rock, good times, and good friends. For more information or to check out the label go to: Artistwine.com

helping HANDS

The Temecula Valley Foundation for Excellence in Education (TVFEE), in partnership with the Temecula Valley Unified

School District (TVUSD), the City of Temecula, and Riverside County, will sponsor a Taste of Temecula Valley (TOTV) from 11 AM – 10 PM on Saturday, April 30, at Town Square Park, in front of the new civic center, 41000 Main Street, Old Town Temecula. Admission is $10 per person; children 12 and under are free. Proceeds will benefit the more than 29,000 students in grades K-12 in TVUSD schools by providing funding for art, science, and technology programs.

The tasting event, which was originally scheduled for 2010, was postponed to April 2011 when the all-volunteer committee decided it just wasn’t ready to move forward. The TOTV Committee gained traction after it teamed up with local entrepreneur Charlene Keys. Keys, the publisher of Access Temecula, a popular hard-copy and web-based guide to area dining, entertainment, and activities, is leading the restaurant, winery, and microbrewery recruitment effort.

Taste of Temecula Valley will provide patrons with the opportunity to enjoy a full day of food, drink (including kid-friendly beverages), live entertainment, and wine-related products and art, along with specialty foods, including unique liquors, cakes and cupcakes, and spice products. Like the almost-30-year-old Balloon and Wine Festival, organizers hope the TOTV will become a signature event, one that will compel visitors to visit Old Town on an annual basis.

The Taste of Temecula Valley will be the TVFEE’s first major fundraiser. While new to many, the event actually has a history dating back more than 20 years. In the late 1980s, it was championed by the Community Recreation Center Building Foundation. That organization brought wineries and local restaurants together to raise money for a recreation center “for the kids.” More than $500,000 was collected and, in 1992, construction began on the Community Recreation Center (CRC), now part of the 128-acre Ronald Reagan Sports Park. The CRC Building Foundation disbanded in January 1998. The TVFEE hopes to follow in its footsteps, this time with a goal of funding art, science, and technology c u r r i c u l u m e n h a n c e m e n t s in all TVUSD schools.

mr. FIX-IT

EASE THOSE POST-HOLIDAY PLUMBING WOES

The holidays brought housefuls of people to our homes - and often plumbing problems produced by the volume of food,

waste and, in particular, items disposed not suitable for pipes or flushing. Now that the hullabaloo has died down, it’s time to fix those plumbing woes. By taking stock in a few key tools and tips and gaining some basic plumbing knowledge, you can avoid having to call a plumber and save a few of those already tight, post-holiday dollars.

• KNOW YOUR PIPES’ LIMITS Knowing how your plumbing works will help you to better

diagnose a problem and either solve it yourself or resort to calling a professional, if necessary. Invest in a do-it-yourself book on plumbing to help “un-complicate” your home’s plumbing system.

• SNAKES ARE SUITABLE If the plunger isn’t doing the trick, another option to try is a

snake. Made of bendable steel, a snake is maneuvered into a drain with a crank handle that can sometimes be attached to a power drill. It can reach clogs up to 25 feet away and break them apart with a gentle twist or tug. While this may sound like advanced plumbing, a snake is extremely easy to use and will cost you about $30.

• USE CAUTION WITH CHEMICALS If elbow grease and conventional methods aren’t solving the

problem, you may need to try a drain-clearing chemical. Most drain-clearing chemicals are made for hair and grease, but will do the trick on that slow-moving kitchen sink Just be careful not to get hurt when you use them and keep them away from children. Follow the instructions on the bottle exactly to avoid damaging the pipes.

• TURN TO A PLUMBING PRO Some plumbing problems are caused by a bigger, more

complex issue, so if your efforts aren’t making things any better, calling a pro is the next best route. A good plumber should be able to identify the problem and take the necessary course of action. Check your local phone listing for plumbers in your area and be sure to ask questions about licensing, insurance, fee structure and experience when you call.

Follow these simple tips and flush your plumbing problems for good.

he uses for chartered tours including whale watching, romantic sunset cruises along the coast, trips to Catalina Island, and sailing lessons.

“I usually take out very small groups of four to six people, there are no noisy engines, and, unlike the fishing boats which glide with the ocean’s rolling swells, the sailboat’s hull can actually cut through those swells so it makes for a very comfortable ride.”

“I even have a place in the cockpit to serve wine and cheese for anyone who wants to add a little romantic touch to their adventure!” he said.

According to Ford, whale watchers on a sailboat are much closer to the ocean’s surface where they can get a good look at sea lions and playful dolphins along with the enormous gray whales and other cetaceans which migrate along the same path.

One memorable tour brought the Bueno close to a blue whale, the largest of the all the whale species, not to mention the largest of all the animals known to have lived, and which can reach 100 feet in length. Blue whales remain on the endangered species list as they too were nearly hunted to extinction in the mid-twentieth century.

“It was magnificent,” Ford recalled. “I always feel very lucky when that happens. Of course, it’s always thrilling to see any whale nearby, but the sight of a blue whale just takes your breath away.”

retro REWIND

When the editor first asked me to write a piece on “romance” they also asked, “would that be OK with you?” I think their doubt was because they know me best as either a

radio personality or as an event DJ who gets everyone dancing. What they didn’t realize was that in addition to being a romantic myself – my wife and I just celebrated our ten-year anniversary by renewing our vows to each other in a vineyard in Temecula at sunset – that romantic songs play a BIG part of virtually every live set I DJ. Put me at a wedding and there the romance flows through the music.

Let’s face it, every good wedding should have a little romance, but a great wedding should be full of romance and touch the romantic in us all – even grumpy old Uncle Bernie who didn’t want to come to the reception in the first place! So how do you do that? It’s all about how you mix in the music. I always start long before the actual wedding day by talking in depth about the music with the bride and her family. Sometimes we even involve the groom in the conversation, but let’s be honest, at 99% of weddings it’s all about the bride, the groom is just there as an accompaniment.

The first thing I ask to ensure that the romance won’t be shattered at any point during the special day is a question most DJs don’t bother to bring up but I find so important, and that’s “What DON’T you want to hear?” After all, the last thing a bride wants played on her wedding day is a song that brings back a bad memory. So, quickly we get all the negatives out of the way and compile the forbidden list. And I make a deal with the couple that if anyone asks for those songs I’ll take the fall and pretend I forgot to bring them with me.

Adding the romantic songs is actually much easier. First I listen to the kind of music that they would like, then, if asked, I’ll make some suggestions. And I’ll bring up grumpy old Uncle Bernie. What does he like? Frank? Elvis? The Beatles? There’s always a special song or type of music that will win him – and all the guests over.

The same goes for the ‘special’ dances - the first dance, the mother/son and father/daughter dances. I seen many people shed a secretive tear when I ask the groom to lead his mother onto the floor as Van Morrison sings “The Way You Look Tonight.” The same thing happens when the bride dances with her father to “I Loved You First.”

The first dance should be easier, and usually is. After all, the song that is to be the first they dance to as husband and wife should represent a feeling or moment that is dear to them and one that they can happily remember for years to come. Novelty songs are possibly the worst choice EVER! At one wedding I was asked to play Oingo Boingo’s “Not My Slave” as the first dance. Don’t get me wrong, I love Oingo Boingo, but having to get on the microphone and say to two hundred people, “Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome to the floor to dance together for the first time as husband and wife, Mr and Mrs (name withheld to protect the innocent). Here’s ‘Not My Slave’.” BOOM BOOM BOOM as the 160 beats per minute drums kick in. I have never in my career as a DJ had so many people snap their heads around in unison to glare at me and wonder what doctor had deemed me safe for release from the asylum. But it’s what the bride wanted and at the end of the day they had the reception they always dreamed of and left for their honeymoon all smiles.

The bottom line is that it’s easy to become cynical in this age of the casual hook-up, but if you look around you can see that as the season changes, romance, like the flowers, is starting to bloom around us once again and as the wedding season gets into full swing you know I’ll be out there not only spinning those special songs for the bride (OK, I’ll say it) and the groom, but for all the guests. And to be quite honest, some of my best moments as a DJ have come at the end of the night when an older lady will come up to me and quietly say “Thank you. Tonight was the first time my husband has danced with me in fifteen years.” That always brings a huge smile to my face and I try and resist the urge to ask if her husband is the dreaded Uncle Bernie!

Lake Perris consists of 2,250 surface acres and it is also a boating lake, but it has ten miles of shoreline at capacity. Rainbow trout is stocked at Perris and there is a healthy supply of largemouth bass, some unusually large bluegill (up to three pounds) and catfish grow big there, with the Lake Perris record for a channel catfish tipping the scale at thirty pounds.

A natural freshwater lake, Lake Elsinore has fifteen miles of shoreline, including five miles of beach accessible by foot for fishing. The City of Elsinore has in recent years taken strong measures to improve the fishery, and bass were planted in early 2005 to control the enormous carp population there. Trout, bass, white bass, panfish, catfish and carp can be reeled from Lake Elsinore in good numbers.

But before you start worrying about what superbait or jigs or rods to use, you first have to get rid of any preconceived ideas about going with what’s worked in the past, according to Berry.

“You need to understand that fishing is new every time,” he said, adding that women and children on his guided tours nearly always catch more fish than the fishing-serious men in group because “the wives and girlfriends and kids are open to going with my advice, letting me help them get the right bait, and letting me help them cast the lines. They are going fishing with open minds and open attitudes—they’re just out there having fun! And if a guy takes his girlfriend out on a date on one of my trips, he’d better be prepared to know that she may out catch him,” Berry laughed.

And fishing for bass in particular really can put the Zen in fishing, said the lifelong fisherman.

“You never know what the fish are going to do. It’s a great challenge every time because there’s absolutely no guaranteed way to bring in them in,” Berry said.

“There’s a reason that there are million-dollar tournaments for bass fishing! The bass will humble you.”

legal EASE

The issue of what I have coined the Never Ending Lease has arisen in the Courts as a result of the recession and failing

businesses. Let’s assume that in 2004 tenant 1 rents a commercial space to sell furniture. The lease agreement is for a 5 year term and scheduled to expire in 2009. The lease agreement includes a clause allowing tenant 1 to extend the lease for subsequent 5 year terms. Now let’s assume tenant 1 is on hard times in 2008 and goes out of business. Luckily, tenant 1 finds a computer sales company (tenant 2) to take over the lease. Landlord agrees to the assignment but requires tenant 1 to remain primarily liable for all terms of the lease if tenant 2 defaults. Tenant 1 breathes a sigh of relief because it is off the hook for the rent for the last year of the lease – right? Wrong!

First, when a subtenant takes over a commercial lease, any landlord with half a brain will require tenant 1 to remain primarily liable for a default by tenant 2. That is the easy issue, but the overlooked issue is the Never Ending Lease. Now, let’s assume that tenant 2’s business is booming until 2009 and it loves the location and decides to elect to extend the lease for another 5 years at an increased rent. The new expiration is 2014. Fast forward to 2012 and the recession has gotten worse. Tenant 2 is struggling to stay in business and finally throws in the towel. The landlord tries to rent the space, but no one is interested. Can

the Landlord sue tenant 1 for the new five year term and the increased rent? Yes.

“[A]n assignment leaves the lessee liable as a surety for performance of the original lease ...” Carma Developers (Cal.), Inc. v. Marathon Development California. Inc. (1992) 2 Cal. 4th 342,364. However, the lessee/assignor is exonerated from its liability as surety if the original obligation is altered in any respect, without consent of the assignor. (Civ. Code § 2819.). Here tenant 1 will not be exonerated from its liability as surety of the original obligation because tenant 1 consented at the time of the assignment to remain primarily liable for all terms of the original lease. Such advanced consent to the alteration of a surety’s obligations has been repeatedly upheld by California’s courts. Bloom v. Bender (1957) 48 Cal. 2d 793, 800 and Central Building, LLC v. Cooper (2005) 127 Cal. App. 4th 1053, 1060 [holding that: lease guarantors are not exonerated when consent given in advance to the extension of a lease renewal].

Thus, it can be argued that tenant 1 will remain liable to landlord for the new extended term and the increased rent. The lesson for a “tenant 1” is to specifically state in your assignment that you will only remain liable for the original term of the lease and will not be liable for any future assignment, extension or amendment to the original lease. NOTE: This analysis does not apply to residential leases.

AS YOU LIKE IT (July) & HAMLET (August)

“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances,

and one man in his time plays many parts…”

AS YOU LIKE IT, one of Shakespeare’s most delightful and bawdy romantic comedies, serves as an accurate reflection of human nature and explores the triumph of love over adversity.

“A bloody deed! Almost as bad, good mother, as to kill a king, and marry with his brother.”

HAMLET is praised as the most powerful and influential tragedy ever written. The young Prince Hamlet returns home to find his father has died, his mother has married his uncle and all is not well in the state of Denmark.

Also, on the PAS calendar for this year are several events featuring the latest motor sport crowd pleasers, the Sprint Cars which could be described as looking like oversized dune buggies on steroids.

“The fans just love the Sprint Cars,” said Kazarian, adding that Perris Auto Speedway is the home track of the newly formed USAC/CRA 410 Sprint Car Series in California and Arizona.

“Not only does the USAC/CRA 410 have the ability to slide through corners and tight turns, but it can get up to 128 miles per hour. It gets pretty exciting, especially when the cars are two or three across with just inches between them. The crowds just start roaring, and with twenty-two starting positions for each event, anybody can win.”

Despite the fierce competition on the track, it’s a friendly atmosphere after the races. And in this era of athletic superstars who keep their distance from fans, motorsport aficionados can actually get the chance to meet their favorite drivers, according to Kazarian.

“Motorsport racing is probably the only major sport where the athletic stars are accessible to fans,” he said, adding that drivers (who mostly range in age between 20 and 24 years old) are always appreciative of their fans. “After the races are over, we open the pits and fans can go meet the drivers, shake their hands, and get their autographs.”

And who says car racing is not romantic?

“We’ve had four weddings here at Perris Auto Speedway!” said Kazarian. People meet here, and they love the sport so much that they get married right on the track.”

“And besides, taking a date to the car races is a pretty fast way to find out if he or she is right for you!” he added, with a laugh. “If it works out, it’s a great date and a chance to watch the races. What could be better than that?!”

ENCORE

During the weekend of January 14, Country Review Publishers Gregg Hassler and Don Harbour as well as magazine photographer Randy Green attended the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) convention in Anaheim. With over 90,000 attendees at this year’s show, NAMM is the largest and longest-running (109 years!) musical product and instrument expo in the U.S. Over 10,000 of those in attendance were international, representing over 80 countries. The NAMM convention showcases what’s hot and what’s up-and-coming in the music industry. Over 1400 exhibitors demonstrate everything from trumpets to guitars, sound systems, lighting... well, just assume anything you can think of that’s music-related. NAMM is “the not-for-profit association that unifies, leads and strengthens the $17 billion global musical instruments and products industry.” The organization’s goal is “to promote music making to people of all ages.” Fun for the attendees is that there are musician-celebrities filling the halls, as evidenced by the photos on this page.
