School Attendance

It is very important for your child’s academic progress and success that

he/she attends school on a regular basis. If your child is absent, a written

note from the parent/guardian explaining the cause of the absence is re-

quired within three school days, or the absence will be recorded as unlaw-

ful. Students who are absent in excess of five days must bring in a doctor’s

note. Some of the lawful reasons for absence for which make up work will

be provided include the following: illness of student, death in the immedi-

ate family, observation of a religious holiday or court summons. Going on a

family vacation is not a legal absence. Prompt arrival at school each morning

is essential for a good start to the day. Students are to be in their seats

by 8:30 a.m.

Arrival and Dismissal Reminders

School bus lanes are for the use of the yellow school buses. We have 5 bus-

es that are used to transport students each day. They arrive at staggered

times so that they may all fit in the lane. Cars and daycare vans may not be

in the bus land until all buses have left the campus. If you are picking your

child up, you may park in the overflow field until the lane is opened for car

riders. If you are dropping off in the morning, please use the hug and hop

lane in the main parking lot. Once all buses have arrived, you may use the

bus lane. Look for the sign at the entrance of the bus lane that indicates if

it is open or closed. Thank you for your assistance and patience.

American Education Week

Cape St. Claire will celebrate American Education Week with parent visita-

tion on Friday, November 10. We look forward to sharing our outstanding

educational program with our parents and guardians. Unfortunately, we

cannot accommodate our non-school aged siblings. Classroom visitation will

be open from 8:30—12:30, please stop in at any time during our open house.

We look forward to seeing you!

Report Cards

Report Cards will be distributed to all students in grades K-5 on November

20th. We will recognize Honor Roll and Principal’s Honor Roll for students in

grades 2-5. In order to achieve Principal’s Honor Roll, students must earn all

As and have no areas with an ND, “needs improvement.” Honor Roll will be

awarded to students who earn all As and/or Bs on their report cards and

have no NDs in any area.

For more information regarding report cards and progress reports, AACPS

publishes Family Guides. These guides can be located on the AACPS website

under the Parents tab, in School/Family Connections, http://www.aacps.org/

html/Parents/default.asp. Paper copies are available at school.

Notice to Parents and Visitors

All parents/visitors must report to the office before proceeding into the

school. This helps ensure the safety of all of our children and staff. In or-

der to gain entrance into the school, you will be required to provide valid,

photo identification which will be scanned through our V-Soft program. This

software allows us to track who is visiting our school and where they are

going in the building. It also has the ability to provide alerts about people

who may jeopardize the safety of our students. After signing in at the of-

fice, you will be asked to wear a visitor sticker or volunteer badge. In order

to help us better track and limit the number of visitors in the building, we

ask that you say our morning goodbyes at the front door and allow your

child to proceed to his/her class independently.

We also ask that you help your child be responsible for bringing all materi-

als needed everyday, including lunches, instruments, and homework. Forgot-

ten items can be brought to the main office and will be delivered to your

child by a staff member.

We welcome classroom observations. In order to get the most from your

classroom visit, we require that you make advanced arrangements with the

teacher.

Homework

Students are provided time each day to record

homework assignments and prepare for dismissal.

Students should not need to return to school for

homework, instruments, jackets, or lunch boxes.

Please help us reinforce the importance of organi-

zational skills.

Classroom Counseling Lessons: November lessons will continue our personal safety units. All grade will be

talking about bullying and responses to bullies. We take bullying and person-

al safety very seriously. Please let myself or administration know if you feel

your child is being bullied. You can also fill out the Bullying, Harassment or

Intimidation Reporting Form at https://secure.aacps.org/bully/bullyForm.asp

This month we will also have lessons in grades 3-5 on substance abuse pre-

vention. If you would like to preview the materials, please let me know.

Human Relations Committee:

The Harvest for the Hungry Food Drive was a great success. We

gathered over 300 pounds of food to donate to

the Anne Arundel County Food Bank! Next

month we will begin our Toy Drive to benefit

needy families through the Sharing Foundation.

Please look for more information around the mid-

dle of November. Thank you for all of your generous dona-

tions!

Kindergarten is cooking up some fun in November. The theme we have

just completed is The Power of Me. The theme that we are starting this

month is The Power of Us. During this theme we will discuss what makes

our community special, including land features, manmade features as

well as goods and services. Also, students will continue to work on indi-

vidual letters, sounds and sight words. As it is getting colder it is a

great time to warm up with a good book. We encourage you to take a

trip to the library to pick out some books for you and your child to read

together.

As Thanksgiving approaches we will learn about the First Americans and

Thanksgiving in Social Studies.

In math we will be working on the numbers one through fifteen. We will

also sort objects by their attributes. Please have your child practice

writing the numbers and use them in everyday experiences. Children

can practice working with numbers through cooking, shopping or even

card games.

Thank you to all the parents who helped to make Halloween a success.

We hope you enjoyed all the wonderful parade, costumes and fun activi-

ties.

Have a wonderful, happy Thanksgiving!

November reminds us that we have much to be thankful for. We are thankful

for our school, students, and parents and appreciate how much you support us

in educating your children.

I Am Curious About How Things Are Connected is our next theme. Our Prima-

ry Talent Development lessons, entitled Design Dilemma, encourage students

to use resourceful and creative behaviors to think like a scientist. They will

demonstrate these behaviors in order to design and build a suitable structure

for a fourth little pig. Students will also discover how all living things are con-

nected by the traits we share and how plants, animals, and people share traits

that are similar and different.

In reading, we will continue to read a variety of literary and informational

texts to ask and answer questions using key details, identify the main idea and

key details of a text, and know and use text features to locate information.

We will use long vowel patterns to help us in our reading and writing as we

begin to write books that give information.

In math, students will be examining place value and devel-

oping a foundation of two digit numbers. Students will

use base ten blocks and transfer their understanding of

place value to representing numbers on a hundreds chart

and modeling two digit numbers in a place value chart.

This foundational understanding of place value will be im-

portant as students begin comparing numbers. Continue

to practice math facts at home using flash cards and

FASTT Math. You can even create games using a deck of playing cards!

As the weather is getting colder, remember to

dress for the weather and put your name inside

coats, hats, and gloves. We enjoy going outside

for recess to get some fresh air and exercise!

It’s hard to believe that we are already entering

the 2nd marking period. Look for report cards to

come home on Monday, November 20th. Please

sign and return the report card envelope. The re-

port card itself is for your records.

Our first field trip will be to the Chesapeake Bay

Environmental Center. Mrs. Vickers and Mrs. Crocker’s classes will be

going on Wednesday, November 1st and Mrs. Bathras, Mrs. Sharp’s clas-

ses will be going Thursday, November 2nd. Thank you to all parents who

volunteered to chaperone. Unfortunately, space is always limited. If

you weren’t chosen for this trip, please volunteer for our next trip. Our

calendar for November is the same this year as last year. School will

be in session on the Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving. No con-

ferences will be held that week. The next conference day will be De-

cember 8th. Look for notices towards the end of November.

In math, we are learning about place value up to 1000. The unit after

that will be about money. We suggest that you begin introducing coins

and their values at home. Our next unit in science and social studies

centers on being a digital native and how to use technology responsibly.

As we enter the cooler days of late fall, please remember to dress chil-

dren appropriately for outdoor recess. Please continue to have your

child read at home nightly for a minimum of 20 minutes and practice

math facts by utilizing the Fast Math website. Thanks for all of your

support at home.

Language Arts – We continue to work on determining the main idea and theme of text,

describing character motivations and feelings and how they contribute to the plot, and

asking and answering questions referring to the text as the basis for answers. Students

are using text features and context clues to maximize under-standing while analyzing

different text structures. We are working on perfecting our personal narratives but

adding dialogue, using “show” not tell, adding similes/ metaphors, peer editing, and more!

Please encourage your child to read for at least 10 minutes each night to increase stam-

ina.

Math – Your 3rd grader will be exploring and developing strategies for addition and sub-

traction during this unit. Students will use their understanding of place value and num-

ber sense to round numbers to the nearest 10 and 100 using concrete material (place

value blocks) and number lines (representational) in order to develop a conceptual un-

derstanding of rounding. They will use place value strategies, properties of operations,

and the inverse relationship of addition and subtraction to find sums and differences

within 1,000. It is not an expectation that Grade 3 students learn the standard algo-

rithm of addition and subtraction, and in fact not introduced to students until Grade 4.

To end the unit, students will use strategies of addition and subtraction to find the pe-

rimeter of a polygon when given the length of sides of a polygon or to find a missing

length of a figure. Then it is on to fractions at the end of month!

Social Studies – We wrap up our first unit by addressing 3 main questions: 1) How do

physical characteristics shape a community? 2) How have people changed the community

to meet their needs? 3) How can I communicate to others about my community? The

students will explore and research our local waterways and landforms. We will look at

human-made and man-made features. We will learn about how communities have had to

modify the environment for trash disposal and even have a worker from the Millersville

Landfill come to speak to our 3rd graders!

Science – Our scientists will be taking in part in some pretty fun lab experiments this

month! They students will explore how forces interact with each other without contact.

We will investigate static electricity, magnetism, and the cause/ effect relationships

between these. They will discuss how these invisible forces work. They will engineer an

invented product using their knowledge of magnetism. Students will also participate in a

NASA’s Best lesson this month!

Other- Thank you to all the volunteers who helped at our Halloween parties and with

the parade! A spooky good time was had by all!

Be on the lookout for a field trip permission slip! We will head to Toby’s Youth Theater

on 12/12 to watch literature come to life!

We enjoyed meeting with all of you at our conferences in October and are looking for-

ward to meeting with others in December. Our partnership is essential to student suc-

cess!

Many awesome things are happening in fourth grade! One of those awe-

some things is the move into division. We will be dividing multi-digit

numbers by a single digit. It’s really important that students know

their multiplication facts in order to be successful; on First in Math,

there’s a great section called “Just the Facts” where they can practice.

In mid-October, students brought home a book

project assignment guide. Books should have been

approved by the teacher at this point. They are

reading a single fiction novel, making one choice

off the choice board that was sent home, and

making sure the project has all of the “must

haves” from the back of the assignment guide. If

parents have any questions or concerns, they can contact their child’s

teacher (or Mrs. Heintz, in the case of Mr. Poorman’s class).

Make sure your child has their permission slip for Goshen Farms turned

in. Classes have already started to go for some awesome learning op-

portunities. We want all fourth graders to have this experience.

5th Grade Happenings (Important Dates): Many 5th grade events will

be scheduled this year by our PTO 5th grade committee. Please be

on the lookout for information regarding these events as well as how

to join the committee!

Middle school magnet information flyers have been sent home with

the specific dates for each program and online applications. Re-

member that magnet school applications are due by noon on No-

vember 30th. Please check www.aacps.org/magnets for more infor-

mation or contact the Magnet Office at 410-222-5391 ext. 1.

Reading/Language Arts: Our 5th graders will be working their way

through the Common Core standards during the month of Novem-

ber. We will be practicing non-fiction and fiction skills in explicit com-

prehension. We will also be working on essay writing during the mark-

ing period.

Math: In math, students have been working on adding and subtract-

ing fractions with unlike denominators. For our next few units, students

will be working with the place value system and how it relates to

decimals, multiplication of fractions, and division of fractions. As

we continue to work on Common Core curriculum skills, there will

be an emphasis on finding multiple ways to solve a problem, using

models and manipulatives to explain mathematical thinking, and

discovering patterns to aid in solving problems.

Science: In science, we will be continuing unit 1 and exploring dif-

ferent examples of physical and chemical changes. When students

begin unit 2, they will be analyzing the Earth’s systems and how they

interact with one another, as well as the movement and brightness of

object’s in the Earth’s sky.

Social Studies: In social studies, our fifth graders will be working on fin-

ishing unit 1, and examining early colonization in America. In unit 2 of

Social Studies, students will identify how the seeds of the American

Revolution were planted in the aftermath of the French and Indian

War. Students will explore the changing relationship between Eng-

land and its colonies in the post-war period and investigate multiple

perspectives associated with that relationship in decline.

Notes/Reminders: Just a reminder to check Power Teacher

October was another great month in Physical Education. For the ma-

jority of the month, all students learned various kicking (soccer)

skills. During this unit, the students participated in a variety of activi-

ties that focused on dribbling, kicking for distance, and kicking for

accuracy.

Toward the end of the month, all students were able to utilize the

climbing wall. The climbing wall is a great way for students to improve

their muscular strength, muscular endurance, and balance. During this

unit, the students also learned about other health related fitness

components.

The students did very well with these units in October. We are look-

ing forward to a great November. As the weather gets colder, please

note when your child has physical education and have them wear (or

bring) ten- nis shoes to

school on those days.

Thank you very much

for your support.

We have been very busy in the Media Center with all the changes

coming to us. You have probably heard that we are preparing for a

second smartboard in the media. We have moved quite a few shelves

around. We are very excited about starting Chessie this year. We de-

layed the start due to all the changes in the set-up of the Media Cen-

ter. We are gearing up to begin right after the Book Fair. The Book

Fair is coming up in two weeks.

We welcome our returning volunteers and look forward to new volun-

teers. The Media Center continues to be a very busy place. Please do

not hesitate to volunteer; your service makes our school an even bet-

Kindergarten: students are working to complete their jack o' lantern collages! Once

complete, we will be moving onto a winter themed penguin project! While exploring

what animals need to live, we will begin practicing proper painting techniques with

cake tempura (or as we say in the art room - hockey puck paints!) We will also investi-

gate the idea of painting with markers and combining simple shapes to make some-

thing new!

1st Grade: students have been exploring how the seasons create change as we begin

an autumn inspired project. Using coffee filters stained with warm colors, students

are working to create an autumn landscape collage!

2nd Grade: students are exploring the idea of how the world

would look from a different point of view. We are just begin-

ning to create autumn trees from a Worm’s Eye Point of View!

The students will be practicing many art techniques like tissue

paper staining, pounce painting, and strengthening drawing

skills!

3rd Grade: students are exploring the work of Roy Lichten-

stein as we create an onomatopoeia pop art inspired collage! Using various techniques

(such as bubble wrap printing, hand lettering, and collage), we will be creating a work

of art that looks like it's straight out of the pages of a comic book!

4th Grade: students are currently working to create an oil pastel pumpkin patch

drawing! We are exploring how light can affect an object as we carefully use value to

place highlights, midtones, shadows, and cast shadows onto our pumpkins. We are also

exploring the art element of space as we determine how we can make certain things

in our artwork appear closeup and other things far away. Once complete, we will con-

tinue our exploration of space as we determine how artists use the technique of one-

point perspective!

5th Grade: students have been exploring the Mexican holiday Día de Muertos and

creating a sugar skull inspired work of art! While learning about the customs of this

holiday, we have been practicing our drawing skills to draw symmetrical skulls. Soon

we will be transferring these drawings to a piece of aluminum foil where we will use

permanent markers to embellish our skulls with traditional and symbolic sugar skull

designs and imagery.

Artsonia will soon be up and running! Please keep an eye out for permission slips to

come home! If your artist was part of Artsonia last year, you will not have to com-

plete another permission form. If you have any questions or concerns please email me

at [email protected]. Please remember that Artsonia is a great way to build confi-

dence and pride in young artists!

Please remember that art class can get a little messy! Please encourage your child to bring an art shirt or art smock to school. It should be stored in their locker and can be pulled out every week before Art Class!

Strings Ms. McCusker

Congrats to the Cape St. Claire 5th

grade advanced strings for their par-

ticipation in the annual Spooky

Strings Festival at the middle school

on Friday October 27th. The following

students participated in the perfor-

mance: on violin, Sophie A., Emma C.,

Malayna O., Edan P., Jordan S., Alyssa

S. and Julianne T., on viola Abigail C. and James O. and

on cello Benjamin B., Matthew D., Collin K., Gracie M. and Evan P. In

addition to the fifth grade participants two 4th graders Sebastien

M. and Brice R. also performed alongside the 5th graders in the

spooky Strings festival.

Please remember that our beginning strings will have their “winter”

concert on Tuesday January 23rd at 6:30 pm

here at our school. On Wednesday Decem-

ber 13th, the 4th grade intermediate

(second year students) and the 5th grade

advanced (third year students) will perform

their winter concert. We will be on the

same concert at the band students and the

chorus students. In the spring, we will have

all of the strings students, beginners, intermediates and advanced on

the same night. That date has not yet been determined.

CHALLENGING STUDENTS TO BE THEIR BEST

The Winter Concert is coming fast, and there is always a lot to learn to be

ready. It's important to put our best foot forward for every performance, and

we want to set up the students for success. Students who are struggling may

have a hard time adding challenging concert music, so it is vital that students

work consistently to keep from falling behind.

To help ensure that students do not exceed their comfort level, they must meet a minimum requirement in their band method books before being given their

music to participate in the Winter Concert. Students must "check off" on

the following pages by November 20, 2017, to receive concert music:

First Year/Beginners: Book 1, page 9 (Book 1, page 12 to receive some Ad-

vanced music). 2nd Year/Advanced: Must complete 3 pages for "Bands by the Bay" students or

5 pages beyond where they started in Sept.

Did your child share with you their “Rank Advancement” two weeks ago? To

help reward students who practice and achieve their best, I’m implementing this

incentive again this year. When band members are asked to learn and play music

from a lesson book each week, specific lines from the book will serve as perfor-mance standards that will allow each student to be promoted in "Rank" through-

out the year. These ranks are not just badges of personal achievement; they are

also signs of leadership within the organization. As students move higher and

progress through their books, they will also be asked to take leadership roles

and help others achieve their goals as well. When a student achieves a new rank,

they will receive a new colored ribbon to tie around their instrument case han-

dle and their names will be marked accordingly in the band room. Please refer to

the green paper stapled to the back of your child's method book to monitor his

or her progress. We already have 9 beginners who have already earned their

yellow belts and made the winter concert!

Congratulations to the many students who earned two CD’s and or PR’s for the first 2 weeks of October on their practice charts. Remember parents must

fill in the times and sign the practice chart weekly for the students to receive

credit. Each week students can earn a special belt if a parent records and signs

off weekly on the chart. The practice chart again is stapled to the front flap of

the method book. To earn a CD and the belt, practice time must total at least

60 minutes for the week. 30-59 minutes earns a PR; 1-29 is an EM; and 0 minutes

or blank results in an ND for the practice chart grade. Unsigned charts cannot

be verified and count as no practice time. Please encourage your child to prac-

tice regularly and to bring you the chart to sign so he/she will receive credit for

their work. I did put a grade in the grade book for the practice chart.

PERSEVERANCE: There WILL be times when we encounter ‘bumps’ in the

lesson book or with new music handed out. Everyone encounters these speed

bumps in order to grow. I will work through the difficult times with your child. I

promise that these speed bumps will not hinder progress, they are a necessary

part of the learning process. Don’t let your child give up when it gets tough. At

the end of the year, your child will be able to look back at all the hard work they

put in and feel a great sense of accomplishment at what they have achieved.

On Saturday, October 7th over 300 musicians from the Broadneck

Peninsula participated in “Bands by the Bay”. Mr. Heist, Broadneck High

School Band Teacher, invited advanced 5th grade students to participate in per-

forming two pieces with the BHS Marching Band. I’m pleased that Cape St.

Claire Elementary had six fine musicians who participated in the mega event.

They were: Alisha D., Tristan E., Hiram H., Garrett M., Mateo M., and Tony M. It

was great to see many fans supporting our own Cape Seagulls!

Students who forget their instruments in the morning need to check the office

before coming to lessons. Secretaries are no longer able to disrupt the class-

rooms to tell students their instruments were dropped off in the office.

Students received new lesson schedule for October 2017 –May 2018. I am avail-

able for extra help if your child is falling behind. Due to having 4 schools this

year, my flexibility is very limited. If your child needs additional help, please

email me at [email protected] to set up a time.

***DO have your child bring instrument and music on delayed open-

ings and early release days. I will work with the classroom teachers to

make sure your child has a lesson if possible.***

The Cape St. Claire Winter Concert is scheduled for Wednesday, December

13th. Please consider joining the band for Feliz Navidad! The signup sheet is at-

tached in this newsletter. If you play an instrument or have played an instrument, please join us. The students enjoy having parents and relatives participate in the

piece. I also give refresher lessons and have some instruments available if you are

in need of one.

Remember: The Winter Concert is scheduled for Wednesday, December 13,

2017 at 6:30 p.m. The spring concert has also been set for Tuesday, May 15,

2018.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Reading Tip

READING CORNER

Reading Specialists Mrs. Burrows, Ms. Dimka

Parent Reading Tip: Teachers may have

shared with you your child’s reading level.

This is their instructional level, the level at

which they are receiving classroom instruc-

tion. A great guide when selecting books

from the library is to go to

http://www.aacpl.net/ and type in “guided

reading level __.” The database will pull up books on that reading level.

Please do not restrict your child to only these books. If they are in-

terested in a higher level book, let your child check it out. It can be a

book you read together. Books that are lower than your child’s reading

level are considered their independent level. These books are great

for rereading and practicing fluency.

“Sick Day Guidelines: Making the Right Call When Your Child Has a Cold”

Should I keep my child home or send him or her to school?

Consider keeping your child home if he or she:

• Has a fever of 100.0 degrees or higher

• Has been vomiting

• Has symptoms that prevent him or her from participating in school, such as:

Excessive tiredness or lack of appetite

Productive coughing, sneezing

Headache, body aches, earache

Sore throat

A minor sore throat is usually not a problem, but a severe sore throat could be strep throat even if there is no fever. Other symptoms of strep throat in children are headache and stomach upset. Contact your pediatrician as your child needs a special test to determine if it is strep throat.

Keep your child home until his or her fever has been gone for 24 hours without medication. Colds can be contagious for at least 48 hours. Returning to school too soon may slow the recovery process and expose others unnecessarily to illness.

Does my child have the flu?

• The flu is serious! Call your pediatrician at the first sign of flu symptoms, which typically come on suddenly,

including:

High fever

Chills

Headache, body aches or earache

Nausea, vomiting

Dry cough

If you’re unsure about the best way to treat your child’s cold or flu, ask your school nurse, doctor, pharmacist, or other healthcare provider.

How do I make my child feel better?

• Make sure your child gets plenty of rest and put limits on TV watching

• Encourage fluids; like water, soup, juice and ice

• Help your child relax by reading him a story and giving him plenty of TLC

• Consider using a cool humidifier

• When used as directed, children’s cough and cold medicines help relieve cough and cold symptoms while your child is getting better. Read and follow the directions carefully and give the exact recommended dose for the child’s age. Do not use over the counter cough and cold medications for children under the age of four in the U.S.

How can I prevent my child from getting a cold? • Teach your child to wash his or her hands frequently using plenty of soap and warm water. Proper

hand-washing should take about 20 seconds or the time it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice

• Teach your child to cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or their sleeve.

• Keep the child’s environment tobacco free

• Try to minimize the time your child spends with other children who have cough or cold symptoms

• Pack easy-to-use products like disinfecting wipes and hand sanitizers in your child’s backpack to use when he or she is at school

• Keep an annual well-child exam to follow changes in your child’s health

• Keep all of your child’s immunizations up-to-date (The Center’s for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines now recommend a flu vaccine for most children aged 6 months up to their 19th birthday)

• Serve a balanced diet with lots of fruits and vegetables. Giving a daily vitamin may be recommended by your pediatrician

• After your child is feeling better, clean all surfaces; wash the bedding and air out the room

• Keep surfaces like door knobs, phones, remote controls, toys, and keyboards clean

• Always make sure to consult your school nurse or doctor if you have any questions
