AIM HIGHER SOUTH:

TRIP TO GOLDSMITH UNIVERSITY WITH YEAR 9

By Ms Robinson

I would like to say a massive thank you to the following pupils who came

with me on a trip to Goldsmiths last week. They were all excellent ambassa-

dors for the academy and I was extremely proud to be with them through-

out the day.

Azmi Adem, Amal Ali, Ilyas Ali, Sara Berehe, Emily Foster, Asante Flavius,

Kevan Green – Mclaren, Jasmine Haqq, George Hegarty, Amira Ibrahim,

Mona Issa, Faris Kabbouh, Zaynab Karim, Jordain Konan, Anais Love,Tyler

Mensah, Fatima Mohammed, Macy Murray, Vadim Opanassenko, Megan

Rowland, David Williams and Anna Zekthi,

We took part in a number of workshops with staff and students from Gold-

smiths University, Roehampton, University, Kingston University, St George’s,

St Marys, University of Sussex and the University of Surrey.

We created progression ladders with Kingston University and played the money game with St Mary’s University.

It was interesting to see the different parts of the uni-

versity on the Campus tour and the pupils asked the

students ambassadors numerous questions about uni-

versity life, including the pros and cons of living at

home when at

University.

It was a really useful day and I enjoyed discussing fu-

ture plans with the pupils and listening to their ideas

for the future and GCSE preferences.

Thank you to Ms Crabtree for making packed lunches

for us and thank you to Mr Sillah for coming along to

help on the day.

ROYAL ACADEMY VISIT BOLINGBROKE

By Ms Wheeler

On the 7th Jan, Year 10 GCSE Art pupils had the fantastic opportunity to participate in a specialist

portrait and figure drawing workshop run by the Royal Academy. The pupils worked hard all day

and immersed themselves in the activities with enthusiasm. The Royal Academy and Miss

Wheeler were so impressed with the pupils work, there was certainly a lot of talent in the room!

LIVING FOR SPORT

By Mr Kerby

Thursday 7th January saw the Elite Football squad attend a Sky Sports Living For Sport Workshop with Team GB’s

Jonathan Boyton. As an international athlete, Jonathan was ideally placed to offer steps to success and support with

developing as a sporting performer. Moreover, the session focused upon building habits that impact both the move

towards elite sport, but also the wider skills that impact our everyday lives. Having such a decorated athlete, who is

on course to represent GB in Rio next year at the Olympics, was an invaluable opportunity that very few schools

are afforded.

Jonathan is a sprint kayaker who has represented Great Britain over 20 times at various international events and is

a multiple National Champion. He is from Hampton Hill and has been paddling since 1998. He competes in the

Kayak Sprint 1000m discipline:

World Cups

2012: K2 500m – 8th

2011: K2 1000m – 6th

2010: K2 1000m – 8th

National/Other

2006-Present: 26 National Medals

2013: K1 1000m – National Champion

2012: K2 1000m – National Champion

2011: K1 500m & 1000m – National Champion

2011: International K2 Liffey descent, Dublin – Silver

2011: International K4 5k, Valladolid – Gold

2010: K2 1000m – National Champion

Our aim as a department, and an Academy on the whole, is to equip pupils with the skills to reach the highest

possible level, but to also understand the planning for alternative options that are key requirement for any top level

athlete- As Jonathan alluded to in his workshop- a professional sporting career can be a fleeting existence, so a

backup is always worthwhile!

BOLINGBROKE BAKE SALE

By Rae & Ivy Madoc ones

On Tuesday 12th January we held a cake sale to help raise awareness and money for Action On Postpartum

Psychosis. Postpartum Psychosis is a severe, but treatable, form of mental illness that occurs after having a baby.

The worst instances can lead to suicide. Little is known about it, so whilst it is treatable, without people knowing

the signs and recognizing the illness, women remain at risk. This illness can also recur later in life. For more infor-

mation visit www.app-network.org.

Thank you to everyone who brought in cakes for the sale, and everyone who then bought them – we had around

350 cakes to sell, which is amazing. We made £212.30, selling red velvet cake, Belgium chocolate cake, victoria

sponge, fairy cakes, brownies, rice krispie cakes, lemon cake, and more. This charity is relatively small, so compared

to other bigger charities, everything given is very noticed and makes a difference. If you would like to donate any

more to the cause, please visit this JustGiving page: www.justgiving.com/remember/241981

Thank you so much for everyone who helped out and everyone who brought cakes (to mention a few, Hettie, Ivy,

Arthur, Dill, Rae, Mr Brooks, Ms Robinson, Ms Jones, Grace, Scarlett, Leila, Milly, Siham, Lauren and many more..!)

MATHS CORNER 8

News from Maths this fortnight

Happy New Year! It gives me very great pleasure to announce that we have welcomed two new members of

staff this term.

Ms Muorah joins us as an experienced Tutor of Mathematics, and will be delivery both lessons and catch-up

sessions in small groups. Mrs Miller is joining us from the USA, where she has been teaching and leading exam

preparation programmes. She will be teaching 7Hypatia, 8Fibonacci, 9Al-Kwarizmi and 9Pythagoras. We’d like

to thank Mr Tandingan for all his hard work over the past few weeks. He will be staying for Monday and Tues-

day of next week to ensure a smooth transition for all of Mrs Miler’s classes.

Manga High – star performers

Manga High has been very quiet over the past few

weeks. Pupils will have WEEKLY homework challenges

set by their teacher and are encouraged to do as many

other tasks and games as they can. It’s great practice

and will also help boost our rankings in the UK competi-

tion!

We are currently 88th in the UK so need LOTS of points

over the next few days to gain the 1000 points we need

to break into the top 10…

Well done to our top performers over the last 30 days.

Pupils can log in at www.mangahigh.com.

The school ID is 263860.

All individual log in details should be written in planners!

Parent Puzzle 8

A new challenge for the new year – a quick one

after the bumper Christmas edition!

What is the only prime number between

90 and 100?

E-mail your solutions to this week’s parent puzzle to

r.donaldson@arkbolingbrokeacademy. Each correct

answer goes into the half termly draw to win maths

equipment for your child (and a treat for you!) Times Table of the Week…

Year 7 and 8 will get their new TT Rockstars book-

lets next week. We are currently renewing our

subscription to www.ttrockstars.com – pupils should

be able to use their Manga High logins on this

website from next week too!

Top Tip from Team Maths

This term is all about CONSTRUCTION for Key

Stage 3. Pupils need to bring a compass, ruler and

protractor to EVERY lesson.

Top Compass Tips…

Don’t press too

hard!

The best way to

practice is to hold

your compass at

the top, and prac-

tise swinging the

pencil back and

forth without touching the paper. You’ve heard

of “air guitar” – this is “air compass”! It will really

help pupils to develop the dexterity needed to use

a compass with confidence.
