EXHIBIT- exhibition opened recently at the Washington County Historical Society: Stocking theGeneral Stores in Washington County, New York, 1900 to 1950. Changes in transportation aredocumented by period photographs and artifacts. Goods and services in the stores are discussed bylocal writers who also remembered or heard about railway and canal experiences. Shipments madetheir way up the Hudson, through the Champlain Canal and north to Lake Champlain or whenheading south to Albany, Troy or New York City. Containers had improved to accommodate largernumbers of goods and more efficient ways to dispense foods in the stores. Options in 1900 nowincluded wooden boxes, cloth bags, crates, barrels, kegs, tin bins, cans and, for home-use, scuttlesand baskets. There was no light-weight cardboard, no corrugated cardboard boxes, few brown paperbags, to say nothing of plastic! Conveyances varied according to size, weight, and distance whichcommodities had to travel. Locally, some general stores would take orders and deliver in a day ortwo. A wagon or cart with horse could be rented by an individual or small business from a livery forlocal travel. Within the county, stagecoaches could carry travelers and their baggage, smallerparcels, and some mail. By using both the canal and, later, the railroad, general stores providednecessary and desirable goods closer to home. Stocking the Gene ral Stores is open to the public at
