Farm Bill Program Deadline Extended to April 7Farmers have until April 7 to decide between the Agricultural Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price LossCoverage (PLC) safety net programs, USDAannounced Friday.The decision comes just days after Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack suggested an extensionremained a possibility."This is an important decision for producers be-cause these programs help farmers and ranch-ers protect their operations from unexpectedchanges in the marketplace," Vilsack stated in anews release. "Nearly 98% of owners have al-ready updated their yield and base acres, and90% of producers have enrolled in ARC or PLC. These numbers are strong, and continue to rise.This additional week will give producers a little more time to have those final conversations, reviewtheir data, visit their local Farm Service Agency offices, and make their decisions."The deadline originally had been scheduled for March 31.Farmers may also finish updating yield history and reallocating base acres by April 7.

PRING BREAK PUPPET CLUB RETURNS TO THE CCCThe Salem Courthouse Community Center will be offering an Aprilpring break Puppet Club program for children in second throughixth grade. This wonderful opportunity will be available from 1:00o 2:30 each day, Monday, April 6 through Friday, April 10. The
week will end with a performance of the play the children haveeen rehearsing. Last year’s spring break Puppet Club staged aerformance of “The Gingerbread Man”. The children learned howo manipulate puppets, make a sound track, change scenery and
work as a team. This year, Puppet Club instructor, Debi Craig of Hebron, plans to have the children perform “The Pied Piper”. Debi

THE SCHUYLERVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY HAS INHER-ITED THE “1,000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN” pro-gram from the Schuylerville Elementary School! Combining the previ-ous efforts of Schuylerville Elementary School and adding our owntwist to the program, we will scoop up some books as we read 1,000books before kindergarten.The 1000 Books before Kindergarten is a pre-literacy effort aimed atencouraging families to read at least 1000 books to their preschooler,birth to age five, before they enter school. This program was devel-oped to increase awareness of the importance of early li teracy as wellas encouraging parents to embrace their role as their child’s first teacher.The goal of this program is to foster a love of reading that will last a lifetime and to help children enter school ready to learn. Reading is one of the most important things you can do to ensure your child’s successwhen they begin school. It also provides an opportunity to increasetheir exposure to a wide variety of books, and to promote use of thelibrary – a treasure trove of free material available to our communitymembers.At Schuylerville we are taking it a step further, while the program istargeted to children under the age of five, the joy of reading doesn’tstop there. 2 FREE SPRING ART PROGRAMS AT THE CCC. The Salem Courthouse Community Center isoffering two art programs to area students at no charge thanks to generous funding provided by LARAC.The first opportunity is a spring break art class for students in the 7th and 8th grade. The Salem CentralSchool art department will help target the students who would benefit from this program, however,private and home-schooled students are welcome as well. Experienced art teacher, Gabi Moore willconduct the classes at the CCC Monday through Fr iday during spring break (April 6 – 10) from 10:30am to noon. Students will have the opportunity to explore their creative side leading to an exhibit of theirwork at the CCC. The second program funded is an initiative that involves both Salem Central Schoolteens and Salem Art Works. Each Monday at 2:30 pm between April 13 and June 1, students will betransported from the school to SAW utilizing the SAVE van. At SAW, the students will be mentored bygraphic artist, Chase Winkler. The students will have the opportunity to work with established artist swhile taking advantage of the outstanding grounds at SAW. Again, due to the generosity of LARAC,
there will be no tuition fee. Students interested in either program should contact the CCC at 518-854-7053 to register.
