SINCE ITS FOUNDING IN 2005, RealTours

has specialized in agricultural tourism

and incentive trips in Ukraine, Russia

and Georgia. Through travel to these

previously underserved areas, RealTours

is developing a new travel trend: agri-

tourism in contrasts. Its agricultural

study tours combine familiar staples of

agritours—authentic, local experiences,

farm stays and visits to wineries and

creameries—and add meetings with

agricultural organizations.

Ukraine is well-known as part of

one of only a few global Chernozem

Belts—regions of rich, black earth. With

more than seven years of experience in

agritourism, RealTours has gained the

support of foreign embassies and built

cooperative relationships with large

agribusiness corporations. Most impor-

tantly, RealTours has built friendships

with farmers.

The value of these relationships was

apparent on Michigan Farm Bureau’s

recent trip to Ukraine. On a weeklong

odyssey from north to south, Kiev to

Odessa, the group visited the United

States Embassy and Ukrainian Agriculture

Ministry; grain, poultry, beef and dairy

farms; a major grain processor and a large

greenhouse complex. Guests examined

firsthand agricultural production in what

was once called “the breadbasket of the

Soviet Union.” The trip was rooted in

interaction with household farms—rem-

nants of the Soviet Union—and represen-

tatives of a new generation of large, corpo-

rate enterprises and government officials.

Participants of the tour saw the con-

trasts between their experiences of

farming at home and traditions and

processes in Ukraine. “The educational

value and perspective these trips offer

is invaluable,” said one participant. “We

learn more about where our exports

go, where our imports come from and

how farming in other parts of the world

compares to how we do it.”
