Like so many small towns, Richfield has struggled to support it’s business community, but in the last few weeks, two new shops have opened up with the hope of changing that - Cathy’s Closet and Off The Grid. Cathy’s Closet is named after the mother of the owner, Marsha Hiatt. Marsha is currently the District Two county commissioner for Lincoln County, but decided earlier this year not to run for re-election. Not one to “sit idly by” she has remodeled her mother’s home at 185 Nez Perce Street (corner of Highway 93/26 and 2nd Street) into place to find great items from the past (she has a large collection of vinyl... re- cords, and more). She will also take items (antiques, etc.) on consignment. For now, she plans to be open 7 days-a-week from 10 to 7. Just down the road, on South Main Street in the old Paulson Motor Service building, Rebecca Wood has opened Off The Grid. death & service noticesViolet Almberg Mink, 94, a resident of Gooding, passed away Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at her home in Gooding. A memorial graveside service will be held at 3:00 pm, on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at the Elmwood Cemetery in Gooding. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Ser-vice – Gooding Chapel.

Darrall Douglas Strickland, 34, a resident of Wendell passed away Monday, September 8, 2014 at his home in Wendell. Arrangements are pending under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service – Wendell Chapel.

Losi Mae Strunk Webb June 17, 1936, a blessed event happened at Grandma (Kate) Alexander’s house in Shoshone, Idaho. A daughter was born to Tipp and Agnes Strunk. They named her Lois Mae. She was the 3rd of four childreninthefamily, andthelittle sister of Jeannette and Stanley. A few years later, they were joined by another brother, Robert. Lois grew up and attended school in Sho-shone. She graduated from Shoshone High School and ac-tively participated in her class reunions through the years. On August 11, 1953, she and Bennie R. Webb were mar-ried. Into this union, four children were born: Larry, Linda, Richard and Brenda. The family was all raised and edu-cated in Shoshone. Lois was a shy girl, however she overcame her shyness by attending Mothers Circle, Ladies Aid and Lodge activi-ties with her mother Agnes Strunk. Through these activities Lois developed a lot of multi-generational friendships that she cherished throughout her life. If you were a friend of Lois’, you were a friend for life. Lois was an active member of the First Baptist Church and the Rebecca Lodge. She enjoyed playing pinochle with many of the ladies in the community. She was employed as a bookkeeper for 20 years at Strunks Hardware store, the business that her parents Tipp and Agnes owned. Lois had an award winning smile. She was a very talented home-maker; sewing for her family, making pants and shirts

for the young kids, dresses, formals and wedding dresses for her daughters, and also square dance clothes for herself and Ben. She also made afghans and Care Bears for her grand-children. One of her little known talents was her ability at putting together beautiful floral arrangements. Lois loved gatherings. Family reunions, class reunions and picnics for family members coming or going were among Lois’ favorites. Lois was particularly partial to holiday events and specifically her Christmas Eve gift exchange. No one should have to battle cancer once, let alone twice as Lois did. Her first fight was 21 years ago when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and her second fight began in April 2013 when she was diagnosed with cancer of the liver and lungs, eventually the cancer spread into her bones as well. Thankfully her courage, positive attitude and good sense of humor lasted throughout her battles, but unfortu-nately there are still some cancers that cannot be cured. Lois passed from this earth on September 3, 2014, at her home in Boise, Idaho. She will be joyfully greeted by many family and friends who have left this earth before her. Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Tipp and Agnes Strunk. Her mother also passed on September 3rd, but 22 years earlier. Lois is survived by her husband Bennie, and their four children: Larry (Becky) Webb of Pocatello, Idaho; Linda Webb of Eagle, Idaho; Richard (Deann) Webb of Boise, Idaho and Brenda Webb (fiancé Steve Bates) of Emmett, Idaho. She is also survived by her siblings: Stanley (Kath-ryn) Strunk, Robert Strunk, and Jeannette Robbins. Lois’ greatest joy was her nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A viewing and visitation will be held on Wednesday, Sep-tember 10, 2014 from 10:00 am until 12:00 noon at Demaray Funeral Chapel, 404 West B Street, Shoshone, Idaho 83352. The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, September 10, 2014, at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church, 205 East 5th Street, Shoshone, Idaho 83352. Pastor Larry Sparks will officiate. Interment will follow at the Shoshone Cemetery. The family would like to thank with great appreciation, Dr. Paul Montgomery and his medical staff, Mountain States Tumor Institute (MSTI) and St. Luke’s Hospice. We also send our thanks and deep appreciation to our neigh-bors, family and friends who have supported us so faithfully throughout this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Lois’ name to MSTI or St. Luke’s Hospice programs, 190 East Bannock Street, Boise, Idaho 83712, or to a charity of your choice. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared with the family at www.demarayfuneralservice.com.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~Speaker Night at the MuseumWednesday, September 17th at 7 pm During World War II the United States Government re-moved the entire Japanese American population off the west coast and relocated them to ten camps in the interior. One of these camps was Camp Minidoka, located in South Cen-tral Idaho. This camp was also called Hunt, and held almost 10,000 persons of Japanese ancestry during the war. This camp had a great impact on Idaho during the war years and was an important part of both Idaho and United States His-tory. In 2001, it was designated as a National Monument, and plans are being developed for the site. Robert Sims, Professor of History Emeritus and former Dean of the College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs at Boise State University, will speak on the history of World War II and Idaho’s Incarceration Center for Japanese Americans. This final speaker night for the year is free, but donations are appreciated. Refreshments will follow. The Gooding County Museum is located at 273 Euskadi Lane (Hwy 26/46), Gooding, Idaho between North Canyon Medical Center and the Gooding Basque Center. The Gooding County Museum is open every Friday and Sat-urday from April through October from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year our theme is Military and the Homefront. 25 Maximum Riders for the weekend

September 1st starts the series of seasons in which hunting is allowed. Prior to

that date we have archery hunts, but the real gun hunts start on the first. People hit the road by the carloads; whether

they have waited for a year for a new season, want meat, or just want to feel the power of their guns. At any rate, they are out in the numbers. Each year it seems there are fewer place to hunt due to urban spread, wildlife management practices, and people who are clos-ing their lands to people who hunt. With less hunting places, peo-ple feel their rights are violated. To start with a right is something that someone is entitled to or is due to them, or in their words, owed to them. In our state, hunting is a privilege which is basi-cally a benefit, advantage, or favor - NOT A GIVEN RIGHT. This privilege starts with the issue of a hunting license and ap-propriate tags. I can see why more and more land owners are refusing people access to their lands and the wildlife that live on those lands. People have created their own distrust in the system. Gates are left open. Fences are cut. Irrigation water is detoured or upset. Wrong wildlife is taken by uneducated hunters. Signs of direction are destroyed. Window of vehicles, buildings, and equipment are shot out. Personal property is stolen. Fields are rutted with off-road vehicles. Unauthorized people are given ac-cess by second party OK’s. Livestock is shot because it moves or don’t. Landowners are personally attacked because someone doesn’t want to abide by the rules. And we wonder why more and more “No Trespassing” signs are being posted. The irresponsibility of some ruins things for others who are law abiding, respectful people. There is a loss of respect throughout the ranks, not only with others, but with oneself. Values and morals don’t seem to be of any importance. Years ago one could hunt about anywhere they wanted because they asked permission, follow rules and requests, and were very conscience of other’s property. Today, doesn’t hold the same concept because people think they are owed something. To change this narrowing opportunity to hunt private lands, a major change is going to have to happen with the general public. More education, stricter trespass enforcement, and a coopera-tion between hunters and landowners will have to be addressed. Obeying orange painted posts, no trespassing signs, and asking (not assuming) permission is a start to bringing things to the hunting table. I personally know people who have had their pet dogs shot. That is like losing a family member. Others I know have lost cattle and horses. I’m a hunter myself, but I disagree with the ones who think the world revolves around their sole purpose. If they expect others to share, they first must present themselves worthy. The price of NO hunting is a heavy price to pay. Fences & gates barred, this is my “Cup of Tee.” Tee Hurd
