Bionanotechnology and Nanomedicin
Introduction of this course
Course Description This course will cover the physics and chemistry relevant to the
design, synthesis, and characterization of bionanotechnology. Topics include nanoparticle synthesis, functionalization, surface engineering, and applications in diagnostics and therapeutics. The properties of semiconductor quantum dots and magnetic nanoparticles will be reviewed along with techniques for nanoparticle manipulation, particle tracking and their applications in drug delivery.
Patterning tools including soft lithography, optical lithography, e-beam lithography, and template lithography will be discussed. Electron and scanning probe microscopy will be reviewed.
Strategies for functionalization of biosensors are covered with focus on methods for attaching biomolecules. Bio-nanosensors functionalized with biologically-active molecules, genes, antibodies or other proteins, will be used to probe cell function and to develop methods to enhance our ability to deliver bio-active molecules to cells and tissues. The discussions covered will be on areas of human cancers and nanotechnology and include the latest developments from studies of model organisms.
This course allows students the opportunity last week to review and present on special research topics related to nanobiotechnology.
Instructors
1. Prof. Dr. Guang Yang Her current research interest focuses on
Biochemical engineering, Bionic nano-composite, Polymer physics & chemistry, involving in study on nano-assembly of ordered eco-friendly materials and their structures & properties, proceeding control and optimization of bio-refining, design and fabrication of novel nano-drug transporter, tissue engineering scaffold materials for biomedical applications, etc.
Instructors
2. Prof Glyn.O.PhillipsProfessor Phillips' research interests have
centered upon carbohydrate and biomaterial systems, particularly on food hydrocolloids and medically-related biopolymers of connective tissue. He has been a collaborator with Dr Endre A. Balazs since 1963, lately with Biomatrix Inc, (now incorporated into Genzyme Inc) which produced HYLAN, an FDA approved product, which was used for the replacement for synovial fluid damaged by osteoarthritis ( “SYNVISC” ).
Instructors
