Additional Learning Activities

Tutorials In true British teaching style, our programs include tutorials as part of the learning process. Classmates, working in small teams and guided by the subject matter expert, (professor) work together to solve problems and typical situations thereby using and developing their theoretical leadership and functional skills. The tutorial system is fundamental at Oxford and Cambridge as a teaching method and, following in their example of student success, it is a system now used in better schools as it uses huge resources when devoting expensive addi-tional teaching time to existing classroom student contact hours.

Company Tours & Field Trips In addition to inviting a series of local business experts to visit the classes, ESBL seeks to en-hance the student’s local knowledge and general knowledge by including tours and field trips to observe the theory in action. While for international students this practice my differ somewhat, there is real benefit by returning to their home countries armed with more inter-national experience.

Internship Agreements An internship is a non-contractual work position that offers the student some experience in the workplace. This may last the entire academic year here in Barcelona as International non-EU students are permitted to hold paid internships.

Seminars A seminar has the function of bringing together small groups for recurring meetings to focus on a particular subject. At ESBL we employ seminars as a fundamental learning activity by assigning the student teams project work with ongoing objectives which parallel the learning goals. This helps to familiarize the student more extensively with the methodology of their chosen subject and allows them to experience practical problems that always occur during research work. Assigned readings are discussed, questions are asked and answered and de-bates can be conducted.

Cambridge University International Bussiness Diploma Program (IDB)

International Recognition

The importance of proven, transferrable skills cannot be underestimated – candidates of all abilities need

them to pursue a career in today’s dynamic and diverse global employment market. Cambridge IDB pro-

vides candidates with the knowledge and skills they need to progress in the workplace. The Diplomas are

recognized worldwide by professional organizations as proof of an individual’s ability to excel in their cho-

sen field. International professional bodies and industry standard-setters like the Chartered Institute of

Marketing, the Association of Project Management, and the Open University are supporting and recog-

nizing the Cambridge International Diplomas. The support ranges from credit rating and formal endorse-

ment of specific modules to exemption criteria on their study programs. In many cases, the Diplomas also

grant membership eligibility to these prestigious organizations. The external endorsement of Cambridge

International Diplomas ensures that the global standards in each module match those set within the com-

mercial world today. Cambridge’s International Diploma in Business (advanced) suits university students,

people seeking employment wanting to develop new skills and enhance their CV’s, and people already in

the workplace that are looking for formal certification of their ability. To achieve the Diplomas, students

must study two core modules: Business Organization and Effective Communication, and choose two addi-

tional courses from: HR, Marketing and Finance.

11

International Recognition

IDB (Standard) Prep Program 320 Hours 7200 € =5779£ Each Module 80 Hours 1800 €=1445£

To all you present and future high school graduates, we offer you an alternative to immediately beginning

to work or going off to University. The (IDB) International Diploma in Business (standard) from

Cambridge University is a program that can help you with either objective, and the course is delivered

entirely in English. For this Diploma the student will study on a full-time, day schedule for a period of 9

months (320 hours). The courses studied are Human Resources, Finance, Marketing, Effective Business

Communication and Organizational Theory. At the end of the term there will be examinations on each

topic studied. The examinations are written at our school as we are a certified Cambridge Examination

Centre. The syllabus is written by Cambridge as are the examinations. The examinations are administered

by them through agents from the British Council. The completed examinations are then sealed and sent to

Cambridge University, UK for grading. Once the student has satisfied a minimum of a Pass in two

mandatory and two elective courses, they will be awarded the Diploma. It is worth mentioning that

Cambridge University has scored the World’s Number One position for the 500 best universities in the

World, and in 2012 they beat Harvard University to secure the top spot. Cambridge’s degree, diplomas and

certificates are known and respected around the World as the “Gold Standard” of a quality education.

If after completing the diploma, the student should then choose to go to university, they will be well-

positioned to select the areas of business studies that most effectively utilize their strengths and interests,

having been identified through their exposure to the Cambridge business curriculum. This would make the

very best use of a ‘Gap Year’, which students from many countries take after high school and before begin-

ning university studies. Rightly, this program is referred to as a ‘prep school’ course and significantly aids

in reducing the doubt and stress involved in choosing a higher education pathway.

Alternatively, the program would also be an excellent one for any new graduate who chooses not to go on

to university but intends to go into a family business, or look for an entry-level managerial position. The

holder of the Cambridge IDB is already a step above the other job applicants, and has much more to offer

the company from the start of their career with them.

The third benefit is applicable in either choice, in that the student will have had an entire school year with

intensive exposure to an all-English environment where they will be able to sharpen not only their general

English speaking skills but also develop a current vocabulary of business terminology. Studies have shown

that Business English speakers are more competitive in the employment market, and most recruiters would

choose an English-speaking applicant over a similarly skilled candidate who does not speak English.

The final benefit is that, with this program there is a one-week travel/study period which will take the stu-

dents to an English-speaking country where they will work in teams on a relevant business project, while

living in family environments with English-speaking host families. We look forward to launching this new

term in October. The students will write their exams the following May, and will have their official Cam-

bridge Diploma in International Business by September. We limit the class size to 20. The Travel/Study is

not mandatory but is highly encouraged, and will add additional costs to the Diploma tuition. Examination

fees are also additional. The exam fees and the exam schedule are posted a few weeks in advance by Cam-

bridge University. With maximum class hours at 15 per week, it is possible for the morning and afternoon

students to work part-time, if they choose or need to and in Spain, it is legal for students to have internship

positions. For more information we invite you make an appointment with our Director of Programming

and discuss the program fully. While there is no minimum IELTS level required, a pre-intermediate level

of English is advised, also there are no strict educational entry requirements therefore students are selected

based on their applications and telephone interviews.

NCC Education Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management

Overview: The program is designed for graduates or experienced managers who wish to further develop their career in management. The program covers a wide range of contemporary issues and develops the critical, analytical and technical skills needed by senior management staff. The program will also de-velop the academic skills required for further study at a postgraduate level. The program is designed to be delivered over a single academic year to full-time students, but may also be offered to part-time students over a longer period, with considerable flexibility in its delivery. The program is taught face-to-face by NCC Education’s Partner Centers. For students who are working full-time, ESBL will be offering the NCC Education PGDBM on a part-time, Continuing Education study basis. For entry into this schedule, the student will pay the one-time NCC Education program enrolment fee of 1200 £, the ESBL one-time enrolment administration fee of 120 £, and the course fee of 1100 £ per module. For each successfully completed PGDBM mod-ule, the student will receive a Certificate of Completion and their updated transcript. The student has 3 years in which to complete all 120 credits of the PGDBM plus the university’s top-up of 60 credits to qualify for graduating with an MBA or MSC

Entry Requirements: Upon entry, a student will have: 1. An honours degree from a UK university (minimum 2.2) in any subject, or the equivalent award

from a non-UK university, OR; 2. Three year’s work experience at a managerial level with significant responsibility for resources

(staff, financial, physical, etc., or a combination of these). Prospective students must be able to demonstrate that these responsibilities were significant and that they had a high level of auton-omy. A decision on entry to the program via a work experience route will be made by NCC Edu-cation.

3. If the student does not have an undergraduate degree that was taught wholly and examined in English, he or she will need to have English proficiency to IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.

13

Programme Structure: The program is made-up of eight 15 credit modules, each of which require an average of 150 hours of study, around 50 of which are based in the classroom. In normal, full-time delivery, the program is delivered in two 15-week semesters (12 teaching weeks) in which four modules are studied. The model can be adapted in a number of ways for delivery to part-time students. The modules are as follows: 1. Information and Knowledge Management - considers the effective use of information and

knowledge by managers in organizations and the technology which is used to manage, capture, and derive information and knowledge.

2. International Marketing Strategy - coverage of a wide range of contemporary issues in strategic marketing with a particular focus on the international cultural dimension.

3. Management, Control, and Accountability for Financial Resources - considers the responsibility of managers for the financial resources under their control and introduces control and manage-ment techniques.

4. Managing People in Organizations - examines some of the contemporary themes associated with managing people. A thematic approach to the subject develops an awareness of the con-cepts and theory that underpin organizational behavior and human resource management.

5. Research Methods - develops the knowledge and skills needed by both senior management and for further academic research including critical and creative thinking; complex problem solv-ing; decision making research skills.

6. Study Skills for Postgraduate Learning - provides the essential skills and knowledge required for studying at the postgraduate level. The module is designed to support study in the pro-gram’s other modules and to develop transferrable skills useful for a manager.

7. Strategic Management - focuses upon strategic analysis by utilizing a set of analytical tech-niques for understanding better, and so influencing a company’s position in its actual and po-tential marketplace.

8. Strategic Operations Management - develops an understanding and the ability to critically ap-praise decision making relating to operations management in both the manufacturing and ser-vice sector.

The modules may be studied in any order except that Study Skills for Postgraduate Learning must be studied in the first set of modules taken by a student, and this module will not normally be studied concurrently with Research Methods.

Assessment:

Assessment for all modules will be offered in two assessment cycles each year (November/December and June).

Study Skills for |Postgraduate Learning is assessed by a written assignment which consists of a number of research tasks - the module also contains a number of formative assessments to al-low students to assess their development as they progress.

Research Methods is assessed by a single written assignment which takes the form of a re-search proposal.

The other modules are assessed chiefly by coursework (70% of the module’s mark) which gen-erally requires a report to be written based on a significant case study. A 1-hour long written examination (30% of the module’s mark), also needs to be completed for each module

Award Conditions: The NCC Education Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management will be awarded when a student has successfully passed all modules. A module is passed when an overall module mark of 40% or more is attained, and, for modules that are assessed by assignment and examination, a mark of 30% or more is achieved in both assessment components.

Press Release

April 12, 2012

NCC Education Welcomes ESBL - the First Post Graduate Accredited Partner Centre in Barcelona Spain

European School of Business & Language (ESBL) a private business and language school was set up by two experienced university professors and business managers in 2010. Their objective was to be able to offer business programmes, all taught in English, to international students. Indeed, ESBL is a 'little part of Britain' in the heart of Barcelona...

ESBL immediately sought Cambridge University accreditation to teach the standard and advanced levels of their business programmes. Once this programme was established, they decided that they wanted to be able to offer postgraduate programmes, with the NCC Education PgD BM being a natural choice. With the strong progression routes onto UK Master's, ESBL knew this would be a popular choice for both Spanish and International students. Upon completion of the PgD BM, either full or part time, students are able to complete a number of Master's top ups: MSc Management via the University of Hertfordshire, MBA or MSc Management via the University of Gloucestershire or an MBA awarded by the University or Worcester. ESBL were accredited for the PgD BM in March, being the FIRST and ONLY Postgraduate APC in Barcelona.

ESBL have grand plans for the future; they wish to double the size of their school and hope-fully have an intake of 60 student per term into the PgD BM. ESBL are very interested in attracting students from India, China, Russia, South America and the UK. After only having been accredited for under a month they have already put in the groundwork and have had expressions of interest from other countries as well including Australia, Ireland and Ghana.

J Turkington, MD of ESBL in Barcelona says, "We, at ESBL Barcelona are delighted to be an accredited partner school with NCC Education. We were looking for official UK degree journeys to round-out our course offerings and provide a total English Business Studies experience. Given the economic climate around the world, we believe that to be successful in this shrinking and highly-competitive job world, a student needs two things: one is a solid ability to conduct complex business in English, and the other is to possess the best business competencies that are current and highly-respected globally. NCC Education has led us smoothly through this accreditation process and now that we are accredited, has demonstrated a continued focus on excellent customer service and support. The programme administration and management resources are abundant, clear and concise, and our support team is only a telephone call away".
