Course aims: This course builds on Module BR08. Focus will be put on profit and loss statements and financial statement analysis in accordance with the German Commercial Code (HGB, German GAAP). Fi-nancial accounting in accordance with the German Commercial Code will be discussed on the basis of its objectives and principles, and in relation to those items of the annual financial state-ment that are relevant to the real estate industry. On the basis of the authoritative principle (Maßgeblichkeitsprinzip) the course will discuss the similarities and differences of the practices of tax law and the regulations of commercial law. Case studies will serve as practical examples. After this course, students will be able to understand and interpret the financial statement anal-ysis (from the perspective of both commercial and tax law), and address questions of account-ing. Course aims: This course focuses on the basics of accounting and enables the students to understand and use financial accounting and business calculation. Students will learn to see book-keeping as one central element of accounting and understand that companies use it to illustrate annual profits and losses to internal and external stakeholders. Additionally, students will acquire methods to record all business transactions which can be expressed in numbers, to account for them and to document them. Finally, students will learn to use the balance sheet and income statement. In the field of cost accounting, coverage will include information on costs and cost analysis with regard to corporate management and communication. This also includes cost type accounting, cost centre accounting with regard to full costing and variable costing, and cost unit accounting. Course aims: Human Resources & Organisation: Students learn about practical structural forms of organisations as well as their advantages and disadvantages (organisational management). Modern instruments of personnel planning, mar-keting, selection/recruitment, development, management, remuneration, and layoff will be de-scribed and evaluated. Labour Law: Corporate management is impossible without knowledge of the basic principles of labour law. Knowing and following the rights and obligations of employers and employees is indispensable for leading and motivating employees. The following topics will be addressed: job advertise-ments and application process; employment contract; employment relationship and termination of the employment. Students will learn basic knowledge in these areas. Moreover, their awareness for complex legal problems will be raised. They will learn that sometimes not only applying laws correctly but also practical solutions can be in the best interests of both employers and employees.
