2. How to use this Guide
This Course Enrolment Guide 2013 provides you with information on when and where the units available for study in this program(s) will be offered in 2013. Enrolling in units for 2013
1. Read Section 2. ‘Program Information’ for information on course structure and unit sequence. Take note of any prerequisite or co-requisite requirements before selecting particular units.
• A prerequisite is a requirement that must be met by a student before enrolment
in a stipulated unit. It is your responsibility to ensure that you meet the prerequisites for a unit prior to enrolling into that unit.
• A co-requisite is a requirement that must be met by having already passed or being concurrently enrolled in an associated unit in order to be able to enrol in the stipulated unit.
If you wish to enrol into a unit for which you have not met the prerequisite or co-requisite requirements, please obtain approval from your Course Coordinator.
2. Refer to the unit listings in Section 3. ‘Units Offered in 2013’ to select your
units. Take note of the study period in which units are offered.
3. You must refer to Administration & Enrolment on the ACU website (http://students.acu.edu.au/332297) for information on how to complete your enrolment via Student Connect. ‘Administration & Enrolment’ also provides detailed information on managing your studies.
4. Log on to Student Connect and enrol (http://students.acu.edu.au/136953). Student Connect is a web interface allowing students to complete their ACU enrolment online.
IMPORTANT NOTE Failure to enrol or re-enrol before the published due dates for re-enrolment on the ACU website (http://students.acu.edu.au/381148) may result in late fee penalties. Even if you are unsure of what units you need to enrol in, please ensure that you enrol or re-enrol in at least one unit before the due date. Enrolling in at least one unit by the due date will enable you to add further units, or amend your enrolment via Student Connect up until the final dates published in the Critical Dates for Variation of Enrolment on the ACU website (http://students.acu.edu.au/273880).

3. Program Information
This course aims to provide both a liberal education and skills development focused on managerial decision making, business and personal leadership, the ethics of values-based management and relevant work experience. It is designed for students who wish to combine the benefits of a liberal education with specific skills focusing on accounting, financial services, human resource management, business or marketing. Requirements for the Degree: To complete a Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Commerce degree you must complete a total of 33 units, comprising 32 academic units and 1 unit of Professional Experience. Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Commerce – Strathfield (Year 1 and Year 2) You are required to complete an Arts major, eight units. As well you will either study an Arts minor (one unit each semester) or you will study elective units in each semester. Your remaining four units for the year will be Core units from the Commerce degree. What is an Arts Major and a Minor? A Major is an approved sequence of units in one discipline or approved interdisciplinary area totalling at least eight (8) units, normally including at least one unit at Introductory level and at least six units at Advanced level. A Minor is an approved sequence of units in one discipline or approved interdisciplinary area totalling at least four units, normally including at least one unit at Introductory level and at least two units at Advanced level. Arts Majors For students commencing in 2012 and earlier, majors are offered in the following subjects
• Economics • History • Literature
• Mathematics • Theological Studies
Note: It is not forbidden to do majors in other subjects. However, students who want to major in other subjects are warned that no timetabling provisions can be made to facilitate majors in subjects other than those listed above. Students who are majoring in Theological Studies, please speak with your Course Coordinator regarding the program map. Arts Minors and electives Minors and electives are offered in all the major subjects plus the following subjects:
• Australian Studies • Communications • Computing
• Drama • Philosophy
Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Commerce – North Sydney (Year 3 and Year 4) Business Majors and elective units can be chosen from the following discipline areas: Accounting Accounting plays a vital role in the decision-making of all organisations. To become an effective, well educated accounting professional, graduates need to be fully equipped with technical competency, analytical, communication, and leadership skills, an understanding of business ethics, and an understanding of business organisations. The accounting program at ACU is fully accredited by the CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia. As a graduate, you will be ready to begin a professional career in public, corporate, not-for-profit, or governmental accounting. With the technical and analytical skills you've acquired in the program, you can begin studying for the PY or CPA examinations, which are viewed by the business community as the basic indicator of professional competence. Accounting graduates are in high demand and have excellent prospects for career advancement. Human Resources An organisation's most valuable resource is its people. Human Resource Management focuses on the core discipline of leadership in encouraging people to achieve their best levels of performance. It involves an understanding of human values-issues that are very much a part of the ACU ethos. Marketing When you mention marketing, most people think of consumer products. Actually, marketing is critical to any organisation because it is the art and science of defining opportunities and then convincing people to try whatever it is that an organisation chooses to offer: vegemite, iron ore, insurance, legal services, education, charitable, not for profit, and environmental programs. As markets become more complex, volatile, and global, people who understand consumer decision making and the management of marketing programs become essential to a successful organisation. Professional Experience Professional Experience is a series of up to three unique ‘experiential’ units on offer to our Business students. The first Professional Experience unit (BIPX100) is a mandatory core foundation unit which all business students undertake in their business degree. This unit focuses on the students’ personal development and is aimed at creating awareness of the importance of community engagement and the implications of individual and social responsibility as a business person. There are additional Professional Experience Units - worth 10 credit points each - these are elective units and may be taken by students after completing 120 credit points. These Units have a professional focus: students learn in the workplace, develop
